Have you read the Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern? Because I have and I can barely remember a time I have felt this enchanted by a story.
“The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.”
It is somewhat difficult to sum up the story without spoiling it for it to still sound logical, but I will try my best: The story plays in a Victorian timesetting and revolves around a magical wandering circus. It is only open at night and pops up without any warning. After a time the circus gets quite a large fanbase called the rêveurs, but nearly noone knows that there is a far darker meaning behind the circus than pure entertainment.
Two magicians groom their young proteges, Celia and Marco, to proxy their rivalry with the exhibits of the Circus as a stage. This is not just any competition – no, this is a deadly contest. But despite all odds Celia and Marco fall in love. How does the story end and can they defeat their destiny? Well, you’ll have to read the book to find out!
I am most certainly a rêveurs by now and would love to see the Circus come to life in reality, but I didn’t expect for them to make a movie out of it. This could either be the most magical and brilliant thing ever or go totally wrong. The rights have been optioned to Summit Entertainment but as the project is still in developement there are no further news to be found online. I am so looking forward to what they are going to do with the story!
Have you read it? Did you love it as much as I did?
