After finishing 21 & Over I felt like I just watched yet another stupid (but fun) teen movie. It was mostly described as a mix between Hangover, American Pie and Project X – which is really accurate, if you ask me. It’s a typical, dirty slapstick humour-comedy about three friends from High School who meet up in College to celebrate the 21st birthday of one of their clique. Together they make quite a tour through the campus bars and end up pretty drunk. From the on things just go spiraling.
While I don’t mean to say that the movie is bad (because it is quite entertaining), it’s not exactly an artistic masterpiece. But since you don’t go into a movie like that thinking you’ll see an intellectual work of art, it is just fine the way it is. While the movie is mostly full of dirty jokes, it also tries to incorporate serious topics such as suicide, anxiety, fear of the future and struggles with friendships. It only achieves that on a very superficial level, but again, the movie is not set out to treat topics like that, but to be fun instead.
It is a great way to kill some time and have a few laughs every now and then. The movie featured: Miles Teller, Skylar Astin, Justin Chon, Sarah Wright, Jonathan Keltz, Josie Loren, …
What did you think of the movie? Did you think it was funny or plain dumb?
