Surprisingly good MTV shows

While I am mostly of the opinion that the TV shows MTV produces are pretty bad, I was pleasantly surprised by two shows. Usually, they try to be funny, but end up just doing stupid, vulgar and heartless stuff, but Teen Wolf and Awkard. are definitely exceptions of that.

Teen Wolf

Teen Wolf started in 2011 and is very remotely based on the film from 1986. Now, I have to say, I never thought a show like this could be produced by MTV. It is dark, it has an interesting storyline, it has an amazing soundtrack, it is fun to watch and it’s even quite intelligent at times. People actually loved it that much, so that the third season of the show (which is currently running and having it’s mid-season finale next week) got the amount of episodes doubled to the previous seasons. I mean that should tell you, it’s quite a good show.

The title Teen Wolf should already indicate what it’s about, nonetheless here is a short summary. The show mainly revolves around Scott McCall, who gets bitten by a werewolf and turns into one himself. Being a former outcast at school, he now has the abilities to be good at sports and apparently also to attract girls more. From then on the viewer gets sucked into a world of supernatural beings, mysterious murder cases and teenage life with all the drama, love triangles and growing up you can imagine. There are some great new talents, but also some actors and actresses you’ll have seen before in the show, like: Tyler Posey, Dylan O’Brien, Tyler Hoechlin, Crystal Reed, Holland Roden, Colton Haynes, Linden Ashby, JR Bourne, Daniel Sharman, Ian Bohen, Gage Golightly, Jill Wagner, Charlie Carver, Max Carver, …

Awkward.

Awkard. is about to start the second part of it’s third season this fall. I have been following the show since it’s beginning in 2011 and have to admit that it’s pretty addictive. It certainly has the usual dirty humour of similar shows, but isn’t as dull and without a storyline. Of course, it is not majorly original concerning the topics of the show, but it has a refreshing mixture of funny entertaining scenes, and actual sweet plot-segments. It is especially great if you are one of those people, who love to ship a certain couple.

Now, if you wonder what it’s about; I can tell you the story is pretty simple. Former nobody Jenna Hamilton gets more attention in school after everybody thinks she’s attempted suicide (which clearly – she hasn’t). From then on, it’s about her friendships, her crush, popularity and adulthood in general. So, as I said, nothing new and exciting but definitely worth checking out. In the show following actors and actresses are featured: Ashley Rickards, Beau Mirchoff, Nikki DeLoach, Jillian Rose Reed, Brett Davern, Molly Tarlov, Desi Lydic, Jessica Lu, Greer Grammer, Nolan Gerard Funk, …

I hope I could convince you to take a look at the shows yourself. If you already know them: What is your opinion on them?

  1. I like Teen Wolf as well. It’s like Buffy the Vampire Slayer for a new generation, almost. Not to mention that I can see Tyler Posey and Dylan O’Brien playing roles in moves passed off my books (God willing, that’ll happen someday).
And I also know a guy who looks so much like Tyler Hoechlin that every time I see him, I ask if he’s seen any werewolves lately.
