Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

percy_jackson_sea_of_monstersThe Percy Jackson team took quite some time to finally release the sequel to Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. After three years we can finally see the result of their work in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. I have to admit I didn’t read all the books, but I quite liked the ones I did read. Therefore, like a lot of the fans of the book series, I was a bit disappointed at the first movie, but felt like the movie just on it’s own was pretty entertaining.

In my opinion, Sea of Monsters was even better and funnier than the first movie. I liked the new characters (e.g. Tyson played by Douglas Smith) and thought it was a great addition to the film series. Generally, the Percy Jackson movies deal with Greek mythology in a modern setting – which I think is a great concept, since I love these sort of stories. This part of the series revolves around Percy having to face his destiny as son of Poseidon, fighting ancient evil and saving Camp Halfblood (and therefore also the Olymp) by finding the Golden Fleece. Once again, he is accompanied by his friends and together they embark on a journey to the Sea of Monsters.

Percy Jackson follows the typical structure for hero movies, with Percy having self-doubts but rising up to the challenge and saving the day. There are not a lot of surprising elements in the movie, and I thought that some parts didn’t make sense (but going into detail on those parts would spoil the experience), nonetheless it is a greatly entertaining movie series that I can only recommand. It is funny and even though they do change the Greek myths a little you might even be able to call it a somewhat educational.

The movie was directed by Thor Freudenthal and is starring: Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Douglas Smith, Leven Rambin, Brandon T. Jackson, Jake Abel, Anthony Head, Stanley Tucci, Nathan Fillion, …

What did you think of the movie? What were some of your favourite parts?

  1. I read parts of the first book on the way back from Israel a few years ago. I wasn’t particularly amazed or impressed with the story, but I can see why other people would like it and want to read it. I’m glad you had a good time with the movie.

  2. I thought the movie was very good. I liked it more than the first one too. It released here with Mortal Instruments: City of Bones which everybody loathed, and I guess that helped too!

    • City of Bones was released a few weeks later here, but it didn’t get a lot of good feedback either. I actually didn’t think it was that bad and that they really stuck to the book. But it’s been years since I read it, so maybe I am wrong about that part. Otherwise I still thought it was a little cheesy but also pretty funny.

      • I guess Percy Jackson released late here, and thats why the collision. The “strictly for adults” rating and the absence of the book’s fans lead to a situation of almost nobody to watch, and Mortal Instruments shows being cancelled here – there were just two shows in all the multiplexes together though!
