The Percy Jackson team took quite some time to finally release the sequel to Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. After three years we can finally see the result of their work in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. I have to admit I didn’t read all the books, but I quite liked the ones I did read. Therefore, like a lot of the fans of the book series, I was a bit disappointed at the first movie, but felt like the movie just on it’s own was pretty entertaining.
In my opinion, Sea of Monsters was even better and funnier than the first movie. I liked the new characters (e.g. Tyson played by Douglas Smith) and thought it was a great addition to the film series. Generally, the Percy Jackson movies deal with Greek mythology in a modern setting – which I think is a great concept, since I love these sort of stories. This part of the series revolves around Percy having to face his destiny as son of Poseidon, fighting ancient evil and saving Camp Halfblood (and therefore also the Olymp) by finding the Golden Fleece. Once again, he is accompanied by his friends and together they embark on a journey to the Sea of Monsters.
Percy Jackson follows the typical structure for hero movies, with Percy having self-doubts but rising up to the challenge and saving the day. There are not a lot of surprising elements in the movie, and I thought that some parts didn’t make sense (but going into detail on those parts would spoil the experience), nonetheless it is a greatly entertaining movie series that I can only recommand. It is funny and even though they do change the Greek myths a little you might even be able to call it a somewhat educational.
The movie was directed by Thor Freudenthal and is starring: Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Douglas Smith, Leven Rambin, Brandon T. Jackson, Jake Abel, Anthony Head, Stanley Tucci, Nathan Fillion, …
What did you think of the movie? What were some of your favourite parts?
