So, I just posted about how my experience with NaNoWriMo was thus far (you can read about it in my recap of Week 1, Week 2 and the participation announcement), but I completely neglected to mention how important music is for me during the writing process. Sometimes the songs are directly connected to scenes in Break Up Buddy and others just get me pumped in general, or best case scenario inspired. Below you’ll find a list of the songs I most listened to so far, which I’ll simply title my NaNoWriMo Playlist (no need to be creative all the time). Just click on them and you’ll be redirected to a YouTube video. Happy writing to all of you!
Run Boy Run – Woodkid
Like Real People Do – Hozier
War Rages On – Alex Clare
Wasting My Young Years – London Grammar
Moving On – Paramore
Shot at the Night – The Killers
It’s Okay – Tom Rosenthal
Hunger of the Pine – alt-J
Hold Me – Tom Odell
Maps – Maroon 5
Tell Her – Rizzle Kicks
You & I – Crystal Fighters
Forever Ever – Bastille feat. Kate Tempest and Jay Brown
Of the Night – Bastille
I Found – Amber Run
Rules – Nat & Alex Wolff
What are some songs that inspire you or that you listen to during writing?
I like classical and operatic music.

I could very well see that working as well. After I was done writing the post, I noticed that there were no Soundtracks or movie themes in it. Usually, I really like to listen to the instrumental soundtracks of some movies and imagine my own scenes to it, but that only works if I don’t have too strong a picture of the film in my head. Never tried operatic music though. What are your favourite musical pieces that work for you during writing?

Good question. I really enjoy Beethoven. And you can’t go wrong with Russell Watson or Katherine Jenkins (the latter was in a certain 11th Doctor Christmas special). Oh, and Stravinsky is always compelling. And the Audiemus singers are amazing.

Very good choices!
I love Katherine Jenkins!! I listened to “Abigail’s Song (Silence Is All You Know)” for day on a loop!

I have it on my iPod! It’s an amazing track. I’ll have to watch that special again before Capaldi’s first special.

It was one of my favourite Christmas Specials, mostly because of the music hahaha I have it on my iPod as well and I got the DVD a couple of years ago for Christmas in this amazing gift box with a book about Daleks. So only good memories of that one.

As it should be with all Doctor Who Christmas specials.

Unfortunately that’s not always the case though.

Are you thinking the one where David Tennant regenerated?

Not exactly. I just really disliked a Town Called Christmas

Ah, Time of the Doctor. It did have some plot problems. And we had to say goodbye to Matt Smith…who is now in the new Terminator film. I wonder if that means at some point he’ll don a bowtie, travel through time, and save the day?

Oh right, that was the real title hahaha I totally forgot about that and just kept calling it the other thing. I think I got confused with A Town Called Mercy.
It wasn’t so much the saying goodbye to Matt, which was difficult for me, but more the random 300-year time jumps. And the aging …
I’m excited for Terminator, but even before that they should finally release How to Catch a Monster or as it’s now titled Lost River! It’s a movie written and directed by Ryan Gosling and Matt plays a bully in it. I read the script earlier on this year and it will be a very strange movie. The trailer didn’t exactly convince me yet, but I want to see it nonetheless.

How’d you get the script?

Found it online.
There are tons of scripts on the internet. I usually just type in the name of the movie or TV show and then script pdf. But I think they took it down by now.

That explains a lot.

I’m always looking for writing music! Depending on what I’m working on- I like to change up my music genres. Thank you for the thoughtful post. Cheers!

Glad I could help! Writing music always very much depends on what you actually write about I guess. If I’d write dystopian fiction for example, the music would probably differ a lot.
Thank you so much for commenting! 🙂
