Read This? Watch This! Tag

So, the Read This? Watch This! tag was first created by Sydney over at Books & Stuff and since I’ve talked a lot about books but have neglected TV shows for a bit, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to combine the two. I wasn’t personally tagged by anyone, but she said everyone who wanted to do it could, so here I am!

The rules are very simple:

  1. Create 5 Book-TV-pairs.
  2. Tag your book blogger/booktuber faves.

If you read THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS (or more specifically City of Fallen Angels and City of Lost Souls), watch BEING HUMAN.
They may not seem like the most obvious pairing, but think about it (and I am sorry but this does contain Spoilers for the TMI series if you haven’t read it yet): Although it is not the main plot, in TMI Simon, a vampire, lives with Jordan, a werewolf. You have the same set up with Being Human, you just need to add a ghost to the mix.

being human

I think that’s just such an interesting dynamic in both the book and the movie, because the “creatures” usually wouldn’t get along, but somehow it works.

I watched both, the UK and the US version of Being Human and I ultimately can’t say which one I like better. They start out very similar but then diverge in terms of storyline as they go on. The UK version doesn’t have as much of a closed end though as the US one.

While not all the children in Red Band Society have cancer, it is about a band of teenagers with serious illnesses, just like The Fault in Our Stars. I think both deal with the topic in an emotional way, but also with a certain sense of humour. Red Band Society got cancelled after one Season, but despite the fans fears, they actually gave it a proper ending. The show managed to make me want to laugh and cry in equal measure, so I think it could really be interesting for fans of TFIOS. I kind of miss the show now …

I read Dream Factory close to when the show came out and when I watched the trailer for the first time I was just baffled. All I could think about was, “Didn’t I just read that?”. Both, the book and the show, are about teenagers working in an amusement park. After really watching the show though, I started to realise that they are quite different, but I still like the concept of it being in a theme park a lot and think it’s a fun show. Unfortunately, the show ends with a cliffhanger since it didn’t get renewed. Still, if you are ever bored and just want something light and fun to watch, this is a pretty decent show!

If you read IF I STAY, watch SAVING HOPE.
If I Stay has this magical love that conquers all and a character that has an out-of-body experience while being in a coma – guess what? Saving Hope has the same ingredients. While Saving Hope certainly can’t be classified as YA, since it’s more of a medical drama with a twist, I still think the pairing works. After a car accident (ring a bell?), surgeon Charlie finds himself in a coma. His fiancée, whose also a surgeon at the same hospital, has to somehow live on while Charlie has to find a way to wake up again.
I don’t even know how many seasons into the show they are right now, but it’s starting to get a little ridiculous. Nonetheless, I need to know how it all ends. It’s addicting!

If you read THE LYING GAME, watch RINGER.
I was almost going to suggest, if you read the Lying Game, watch the Lying Game … or Pretty Little Liars, but that’s like cheating since they are from the same author and producer. Good shows though! However, my suggestion is to watch Ringer! It’s also about twins “swapping” places and Ringer is even more similar to the Lying Game book than it is to the show. I always feel so sorry for the one sister that just gets dumped into the situation and doesn’t have a clue about anything. Also, I feel like I should apologize, because it’s another show that got cancelled and didn’t end so well … I guess I never gave up hope that they’d somehow continue it (just like I wish the same for the The Lying Game show …)

So yeah, those were my recommendations, I hope you liked them! Now, I cannot wait to hear what my nominees for the tag will suggest:

  • My Tiny Obsessions
  • Geekritique
  • Vinnieh
  • FlickThrough
  • I am also going to suggest it to some BookTubers, such as Christine from polandbananasBOOKS, Raeleen from padfootandprongs07, Natasha from Tashapolis and Liz from Elizziebooks but I don’t know if they’ll even see it.

  1. I’m still a bit behind on Saving Hope, but I really like it (I started to watch it originally because of Erica Durance – she was Lois Lane after all).

The only books I read from the list, are the Mortal Instruments =/

    • I LOVE Saving Hope and Erica Durance and Michael Shanks and OMG do I love Daniel Gillies.
None of those books are must-reads. I actually didn’t even like Dream Factory at all and I preferred the Lying Game TV show over the book. If I Stay was really hyped so I read that one, but I actually read the sequel before that one, which was confusing.

      • I wanted to watch the If I Stayed movie, but then the critics weren’t that good, so I dropped the thought, and the book somehow seemed depressing, so I never had the urge to pick it up.

YES! Erica Durance (a.k.a. MY LOIS LANE) is amazing. I started to watch this just after I finished up Smallville, and it was interesting because Michael Shanks is in it as well and makes a pass at her – I thought it was pretty funny. This was the first thing I watched with Daniel Gillies (and I love him)

      • I watched the movie, it didn’t blow me away … it is sort of sad, but it doesn’t all end bad.
Oh Erica is MY Lois Lane as well. The one and only hahaha
I know Daniel Gillies from The Vampire Diaries and the Originals. I hate that I can’t tell you about my feels from the last season finale …….

      • I really loved how Smallville tried to incorporate stuff from previous superman adaptations, like how Teri Hatcher (my other Lois Lane) played Erica’s mom…

Now i know Daniel from those shows as well, but I started watching TVD after I was already watching Saving Hope.

I need to catch up, I know… =/ Does something bad happens? is she hurt?

      • yeah, it’s okay, I totally get it! Stuff like that works in phases and currently you’re just not into it. You’ve also really been reading a ton, so it makes sense that you can’t spend equal time on both!

      • it also had to do with losing my TV – I didn’t lost it, it just went home to portugal and I stayed with my laptop. So, before, I would watch a show before going to bed, and sometimes while doing other stuff, now I don’t, because I realize that my laptop screen just doesn’t compare to my 32′ TV

      • before I had my TV, I didn’t know better, I could sit with my laptop for hours… but now, marathoning in my laptop doesn’t feel as good… =( (I turned into a TV snob! of sorts). That’s why I haven’t watched Sense8 yet, because I wanted to watch it on my big screen, but I’ll just have to cut it and get used to it

      • 😦 those are some real first world problems. When I was in Wales, I didn’t have a TV in my room because it had to be fixed. The owner always forgot about it and so I didn’t get one until the last 2 days. That screen was massive! It was so big, it covered the mirror next to the table as well. I was kind of glad I didn’t get the TV earlier, because otherwise I definitely would have spent more time in my room hahaha

      • they are first world problems (:()

I just got used to that tv, it was so easy, just plug in my external hard drive, or usb drive and I could binge watch any show… I could pause it whenever I wanted to, I could move around… I could work on my computer while watching tv shows… which I’m not able now with my 12′ screen… 😦 the things we get used to…

      • me too 😦 I’ll get use to this again, I had done it before for longer even, so I’ll adjust… but for now I don’t have as much urge to watch stuff… 😦 it will get back soon enough

  2. Yay! So glad that you decided to do this tag! I definitely want to watch Ringer now because Sarah Michelle Gellar is in it and I’m a huge Buffy fan!!
