You know the drill for the Top Ten Tuesday post, originally created by The Broke and the Bookish. This week we got a Halloween-themed freebie and I have to admit that I am mostly at a loss when it comes to freebies. I always want to do something really creative and cool, but my mind is mostly blank. I don’t read any scary books, because I don’t like the feeling of being scared … So, all I could think of were books that included some sort of supernatural creature or magical being (be it vampire, ghost, werewolf, witch, fairy, etc.). Hope you enjoy!
1. The Mortal Instruments/The Infernal Devices Series by Cassandra Clare
Okay, so what do you want? Werewolves, faeries, vampires, demons, warlocks? You name it, because that book very likely has it!
2. The Magicians Series by Lev Grossman
There are a ton of fantastical creatures in the books that I did not know before, but they also have quite regular ones like demons.
3. Bitten by Kelley Armstrong
I don’t know about you but the title already suggests werewolf and werewolf it is. If you continue with the series though, witches and the likes will appear.
4. The Sookie Stackhouse Series by Charlaine Harris
Those are the books the TV show True Blood is based on. Vampires! ‘Nough said!
5. Witches of East End by Melissa De La Cruz
Okay, the title is obvious enough, right?
6. The Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer
You see me grasping at straws now …
7. The Ruby Red Trilogy by Kerstin Gier
The book has ghosts in it, but they are not the real focus of the story.
8. Tithe by Holly Black
Faeries!!! Because well, the series called Modern Faerie Tales, but I haven’t read any of the other books.
9. Cirque du Freak Series by Darren Shan
Again vampires. There are a lot of books with vampires.
10. Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks
I just threw this in for the fun of it. There’s a sort of ghost in the story, but for the sake of not spoiling anyone, I am not going to say who it is!
I know, I know … I’ve done better and there were a ton of books I didn’t mention. What about Harry Potter or Vampire Academy you may ask? Well, I didn’t want to put in any books that I haven’t read. Now, please don’t shame me for not having read HP and tell me all about your TTT lists instead!
I read the first couple of books of Cirque Du Freak but never finished the series. May be time for me to check the rest of the books out.
Great list.

I haven’t finished them all either. I think I stopped after book 7.

YES for TMI and TDI! Love those books (and Cassandra Clare) so much. ❤ Happy Tuesday, great list! 😀

Me too! I am intending to go as a Shadowhunter for Halloween. I am currently working on making my own Stele (similar to Alec’s). Wearing black and putting some runes on should do the rest.

I think I need to read most of these series, especially The Magicians. I’ve wanted to read it for a few years now. There no shame about not read Harry Potter and Vampire Academy. I never read VA and only started HP this year 😛

I like the Magicians as a series, but they are definitely adult fiction. I liked the first book the least, it took me forever to get through. Also, the characters aren’t the most likable ones at first, but in the end, it was a good series with a lot happening.
It’s just every time I mention that i haven’t read HP, people are all shocked and urge me to read it, but I just don’t feel like it hahaha maybe one day, when I’ve forgotten most things from the movies.
As for the other series, Bitten is great (but I’ve only read the first book), the Sookie Stackhouse series gets very repetitive after a while, I much preferred the TV show to the books when it comes to Witches of East End, but the Ruby Red Trilogy is really fun!

I found Ruby Red and Saphire Blue last year really cheap and I bought them but haven’t read it yet. And like always they haven’t finished the series in portuguese so if I end up reading it I will have to buy Emerald Green in english.
I read the first book from Sookie Stackhouse series years ago when the show started but it’s so many books that I’ve give up.
You don’t even need to say anything about Harry Potter. I had a few friends that would get shocked when I said that I haven’t read Harry Potter.

I haven’t read Emerald Green either even though the books original language is German ahahaha I don’t know if you knew that, but they’ve made the books into movies and I bought Ruby Red with the movie cover. Then I waited until Sapphire Blue came out with the movie cover as well and now I am patiently waiting for book number 3 … whenever that may be.
The Sookie books are just really not worth it. I bought the book box with 9 books + companion and then I felt obliged to finish it. It’s a bit of a silly ending, but I actually liked it better than the TV ending hahaha
Glad I am not alone, getting pestered about HP

I knew that Ruby Red had a movie (I watch too many Youtube videos and Sasha talked about the movies months ago 😛 ). I only watched the first seoson of True Blood but I heard that the finale was terrible
LikeLiked by 1 person
The Ruby Red movie is in German, so I wasn’t sure how many people actually know about it. Sometimes I have the feeling it’s made for 12-year-olds, but I always watch them in the cinema nonetheless, because my cousin and I just love making fun of it a little.
I liked True Blood for about 4 Seasons, then it got meh … kind of like the books.

I understand you. I did the same thing with the Twilight movies (especially the last 3 movies) 😛 . I would go to the cinema because I wanted to make fun of it 😛 .

I did that for Twilight as well! (always with my cousin) Although I have to admit that I was still very excited and happy about the first movie. But afterwards it just all fell apart.

The first time I heard about Twilight I wasn’t excited at all for the movie mostly because by that time I haven’t read any of the books yet and because I didn’t like Robert Pattinson. I only got excited when I read the book and by that time the movie was out for a few months. But I was really excited for New Moon and went to the cinema to watch every movie after that 😀

The Trailer for the Twilight movie actually got me into reading all the books. I was soon addicted and even managed to infect some people in my class hahaha

I made my friends watch all the movies but they refused to read the books. I have amazing friends but they’re terrible every time I want them to read some book that I loved
LikeLiked by 1 person
I know the feeling! I only have very few friends that I can convince to read books. Every time they do, they end up loving it, so I don’t get why they don’t just accept my opinion and read them hahaha
LikeLiked by 1 person
You have some luck with that. I never get my friends to read them and then I look like crazy when I try to explain something that got me excited in the book
LikeLike
That sucks! My cousin loves books as much as me, so it’s pretty easy to convince her. And with the others I just talk about books for so long until they give up and read it themselves hahaha my enthusiasm can be infecting.

I have a friend that sometimes reads a few books (she also tries to write some books 😛 ) and I’ve been telling her to read The Night Circus for over 2/3 years and she hasn’t read it yet. It’s frustating

That IS frustrating! The Night Circus is perfect! (if only there were more parts …)

Right? She finally bought the book because it was on sale but it’s been months ans she didn’t read it yet

Whaaaat? 😦 How can you not read it if it’s right there on your shelf?

I don’t know. I read it as soon as I got it and I had no idea what the book was about. She knows that the book is amazing because I told her and she has the book but she hasn’t read it. She hasn’t been reading a lot and says that she needs to finish the Fallen series before.

Pfff, what a shame! I only read the first book in the Fallen series hahaha

I haven’t read any book in the Fallen series. She conviced me to read Hush, Hush but she wasn’t able to convice me to read Fallen 😛

Didn’t you like Hush, Hush? Because I was thinking about getting those.

I liked it. I just didn’t like the last book as much as the other three. But for some reason most of the people don’t like Hush, Hush

That makes me sad though. Now I’m not sure if I want to read it …

OK, I’ll be nice to you for not reading Harry Potter yet. 😉 But you should at some point!
I’m not a huge fan of paranormal (although I’m writing a YA epic fantasy with life-size fairy characters, so maybe that does or doesn’t count…?), but I’ve heard good things about Kelley Armstrong’s work. Has she written other books besides the Bitten series?
LikeLike
Thank you! I appreciate it and I am planning on reading them at some point in my life … I just don’t know when.
Kelley Armstrong is great. She’s actually written a ton of books. The Bitten series is called the (Women from the) Otherworld series and consists of 13 books not including tons of Anthologies and companions, but she has also written the Darkest Powers & Darkness Rising series (6 books), Nadia Stafford Series (3 books), Age of Legends Series, Cainsville Series and a couple of standalones. She’s a very busy woman!

I didn’t either, but I just googled her and found the info on her website. 😉

You’re not grasping at straws with Twilight… technically there are a lot of supernatural creatures there 😛

Hahaha thanks!
Yeah, but Twilight is such an obvious choice. I was completely out of ideas for other books. I kept staring intensely at my bookshelf, but nothing seemed to help.

I agree! Kelley Armstrong is great!
I’ve read A Court of Thorns and Roses but not the Throne of Glass series yet. After posting, I realised I could have put that book in as well hahaha
Can you name a title from Scarlett Dawn to trigger my memory? I don’t think I’ve read anything by her though.

tbh a court of thorns and roses was weak compared to the throne of glass series her world building was pretty bad and her characters (namely tamlin) werent as well developed… but i love her and her writing so i still enjoyed it.
scarlett dawn wrote the forever evermore series (which is sooo much better than it sounds)

Tamlin wasn’t really my favourite character anyway. I really liked Lucien and Rhys though.
I will get to ToG at some point 🙂
Ooooh, I have heard of those books. Good to know 🙂 I’ll make sure to check them out.

Thanks 😀 glad you like it! I really liked the Sookie series too, but I got a little tired of it after 5 or 6 books. I liked the ending though! Better than the TV show.

Much better than the TV show! The show drifted away from the book in so many ways. I agree – towards the end I had a little break between each book while I waited for her to release them, which I think helped. But really liked the characters!

So true and I really liked the characters as well! I think I liked the last two books better because I had a break as well, whereas I read all the others pretty much just one after the other.

Great choices! 😀 I actually didn’t read past the first book in the Mortal Instruments series…*goes hide* Did you read them all? What did you think about those? 🙂

Thank you :)!
I’ve read all 6 books from the Mortal Instruments and 3 books from the Infernal Devices. The only books I’m missing of this moment are the companions like the Bane Chronicles, the Shadowhunter Codex and Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy. 🙂 I love the whole universe. I like the second half of TMI better than the first though. And the best ones are still the TID books!

Wow, you read a lot then, haha! I liked the universe in the first TMI book, but then I started reading other books and kind of put this series aside. Maybe I should get back to it at some point! 🙂

Oh my god I love the Mortal Instruments! You should check out The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning. Her books are so good! They have strong, loveable characters and a really really good plot. Have you read anything by Colleen Hoover? Her books are amazing!! Can’t wait to read more of your suggestions and reviews!

I certainly know of Colleen Hoover, but weirdly enough I haven’t read anything by her yet. I was thinking about buying Never Never though.
Thank you for your comment and stopping by :D!

The only one I have read on this list is Mortal Instruments. I’m super curious to see how they do the demons in the TV show, because I don’t think that the movie did them right AT ALL. But from what I can tell, the TV show will be a little bit more on point with the plot. At least Clary is a redhead.
Thanks for stopping by Writing on Vintage Typewriter!

I am obsessed with the TV show. I watch all the clips and trailers and can’t wait for it to finally come out. They changed a couple of things, but I am okay with that. Clary is actually the only person I am still undecided about with the TV show.
