It’s Top Ten Tuesday, which is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Today is all about villains and you could really go with that whichever way you wanted. I was a bit torn, because sometimes giving away a villain, spoils the story, but I found a way that works for me. Also, indecisive as I am, I split the topic into villains I actually really like and the ones I cannot stand. Enjoy!
Villains I Love
Sebastian Morgenstern from the Mortal Instruments
I know that he’s psycho, but I cannot bring myself to dislike the guy and I have absolutely no explanation as to why. He’s also one of the characters I am most looking forward to appear on the Shadowhunters show. The casting for him won’t be easy and I want to see if they do such a magnificent job as they did with Alec or if they muck it up.
Holland from Shades of Magic
Again, I can’t really explain this, but I do know that it happened more in the second book than it did in the first one. All of a sudden I started really sympathizing for him and feeling for him. If that happens, you know that you have found a good one.
Hollows from Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children
I just still want them as pets. It’s easy as that.
Jaime Lannister from A Song of Ice and Fire
This one is debatable I guess. Is Jaime really a villain? Probably not, but he’s also not the true hero. It always depends on who is telling the story, I suppose. I like him and I ship him with Brienne like crazy.
“Certain Someone” from the Red Queen Series
Here’s where I can’t name names, because of spoilery reasons. However, I was surprised by the betrayal of that person and still did not dislike them. In contrary, their scenes were the ones I was looking forward to. I am crazy like that.
Villains I Hate
Amarantha from ACOTAR
Reading her backstory, I guess I can see why she chose the path she ultimately went on, but that lady was just plain cruel! I could practically feel the despair surrounding her.
The Jackal from Red Rising
He’s so messed up, I wouldn’t even know where to begin. I don’t think he has one empathetic bone in his body. He’s calculating and ruthless and he’s the perfect guy you love to hate.
Mr. Moriarty from Lock & Mori
I am not talking about James Moriarty, because if you’ve read the book, you know that Mori is a girl who just really hasn’t always had it easy. I blame her father for all of that! ALL of it!
Dillard Wayne Early Sr. from The Serpent King
That guy is just another example for bad parenting. He seriously gave me the creeps and he just wouldn’t accept that he did something wrong, which makes me so, so mad every time!
“Certain Someone” from This Savage Song
Another person I cannot name by name, but they infuriated me from the very beginning. Their behaviour was way too self-rightious and they treated my baby August in a way that I simply could not stand. So, there’s that! No one is allowed to hurt my August!!
Who are some of your (least) favourite villains? Tell me all about it!
I do this list every June! The Society even made it on this past year. Isn’t it fun?

Not really hahaha it was an ordeal! Especially because it was difficult to identify “real” villains and then not to spoil people.

I completely forgot about Sebastian! You aren’t the only one, I loved him too. Can’t explain why, except that I have a soft spot for bad boys haha And Jamie! I can’t wait to see where his character goes in the show (and books if Martin ever gets around to releasing the next one …) The way his reputation as Kingslayer precedes him everywhere he goes, without anyone questions why he killed Aerys is fascinating and so tragic.

I am glad I am not alone in this! And YES to finding out more about Jaime in the future! (although we will probably have more luck with the show than the books in the near future …)

I would have to agree with your choice of Sebastian. I found myself rooting for the guy on multiple occasions. If they mess him up in the show, I will be so angry, but if they cast him as perfectly as they did with Alec, I will be so happy. I don’t like Jaime at all, but I’m just within the first 200 pages of the third book so that could change.

I am really keeping my fingers crossed for them to cast Sebastian right!!
And Jaime, I don’t like him when he’s with Cersei, that woman is not good for him. But he is not a bad person. Has he met Brienne yet, I can’t remember what happens in which book …

Yeah, he’s with Brienne right now. She’s taking him to Catelyn. I like their relationship so far and can already tell I’ll be shipping them in the future.

I think it was when he was with her that I saw the good in him the most. 🙂

Yeah. I guess since they haven’t known each other for very long, I’m still warming up to how he really is as a person. When he’s with Cersei he’s a completely different person; a person I hate.

Cersei is the worst! I can’t stand her at all.

Joffery (lol don’t remember how to spell his name) got all of Cersei’s worst qualities.

DEFINITELY! Although I feel like they made him even more horrid on the show.

AHH I LOVE SEBASTIAN TOO!! I mean, he’s kind of been totally ruined by his father, so he has reasons to be a complete psycho?!? (Valentine is also totally awful.) And I do like Holland…I feel bad for him. Like who wouldn’t be deranged if you had to be around the Danes for long?!? *shudders* AND I LIKE JAIME LANNISTER A LOT. Like I hated him….and then I liked him. And I ship him and Brienne so so much too but asking for them to get together nicely is probably asking too much of George RR Martin, isn’t it? 😭😭 Here’s my TTT!

Seems like we have a very similar taste of villains 😀 and I think I went through that process with Jaime as well. I could NOT stand the guy in the beginning, but now he is one of the few people I want to have safe and sound in the end. Asking George RR Martin of ANYTHING is only making it more likely that he’ll say no or kill someone I am afraid.

I don’t know how Jaime was in the books, but in the TV he definitely had his moments of evil and his moments of kindness. I guess it depends on how much you can stand his wrongdoings 😛
You can check my favorite villains here if you want.

Holland was so sad and so sympathetic! I feel like he’s a bit of a supporting character? Like, he does evil things to Kell and Lila, but I just can’t see him as evil because he does have his reasons.
I also have the same feelings as you regarding Red Queen. 😛

Yes, I don’t think Holland really would have been on the “villain” path if his life hadn’t played out a certain way. I mean … the Danes were not easy to handle.

HOLLAND! what a fantastic choice. After reading the second book, I kind of felt so sad for him and his whole life. I couldn’t stand it in the first book though, but it’s so great to see that Schwab made her villain SO three dimensional. I love it. Great choices 🙂

I didn’t like him in the first book either, but then in the second one it just clicked for me and I really didn’t want him to get hurt.

ARAMANTHA. OH MY GOSH was she evil! I definitely love to hate her!
She was unlike any villian i’ve come across before, normally the bad guys in the books kill straight away she surely can do some torturing!

She was cruel like barely any other bookish villain I’ve ever read about!

haha Sebastian Morgenstern is too much of a psycho for me- but I hear you! But I get what you mean about Jamie- although like you I’m not sure I’d classify him as a villain! And I do love to hate the Jackal!

Yeah, Jamie has done some awful things … just think of poor Bran. But I don’t think he is a bad guy altogether, so calling him a villain feels harsh.

ahh yes that’s very true- I forget about that so often! Yeah exactly- he’s very complicated- it’s hard to see him as a straight up villain!
