Top 16 TV Shows of 2016

There are a ton of bookish favourites list, but I am not quite ready to do that. However, then I saw Cátia over at The Girl Who Read Too Much doing a post on TV shows and I thought that I’d definitely be up for that! Here are my Top 16 Shows of 2016, but mind you, they aren’t really in no particular order.

As a warning, Doctor Who did not make it onto this list, not only because of the fact that they only had the Christmas Special this year (still not sure if I will ever review that one) but also because I am generally way more excited about Class than I am currently about anything else Who-related. The cast is amazing, Patrick Ness created a great, fast-moving and emotional show. I simply cannot wait for more seasons in the future (which I am sure they will get!) and for the relationships to deepen and to get even more of these cutesy moments.

The Shannara Chronicles

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, I don’t get all the doubts when it comes to MTV’s original programming. They are doing an amazing job, putting real high quality stuff out there and if you didn’t believe it before, The Shannara Chronicles should have been the final confirmation. It’s funny and action-packed and I am STILL not over what happened in the end.

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency

Not gonna lie, half the time I didn’t even know what the purpose of that show was. It’s based on books by Douglas Adams, but it has very little to do with the source material from what I am told. I guess hardcore fans won’t think so, but sometimes that’s for the better? I enjoyed the show so much, I binged it in one day. It was hilariously non-sensical most of the time. My favourite part were the Rowdy 3 taking Amanda into their fold, I need more of that weird dynamic.

Wynonna Earp

A demon hunting girl? Yeah, I did not peg that show to be a front-runner for me, but I loved Wynonna Earp so much. Wynonna is such a sassy and reluctant heroine, you cannot help but adore her. The production value might not be up to par with some of the other shows, but it was still such a fun time watching it. For a while I even considered dressing up as Wynonna for Comic Con, but then I wasn’t sure anyone would recognise it …

There’s nothing I don’t love about this show. It is diverse and empowering for women and I need everyone to shut up about how women cannot throw/pitch with as much strength and speed as men. I also don’t want to hear how the show isn’t realistic and it doesn’t look like “real” baseball. Guess what? All the actors and actresses had to learn the game and duh, they aren’t pro-ballers, so it will never look exactly like the major league, who cares? IT IS TV!!! (And they still achieved a lot) I NEED a second season of this glorious show. It is family friendly with a great message. Not everything goes perfectly, and that is what makes it so realistic in my opinion. I mean, I cried – about a sports show!!! – that is so not me.

The OA

Still not sure what I watched there, but it was beautiful in a very strange and extremely disturbing way. I don’t think this show is for everyone, it’s about one of the slowest stories I’ve encountered as of late (next to another show that will show up later on) and it has gotten a lot of mixed review. Personally I can recommend it and also to go in knowing as little as possible. It was one of those rare surprises for me and I hope that somehow that story isn’t over yet.

The Royals

The wait for Season 3 was real! I danced through my room when it was finally back. I don’t care that it’s overly dramatic and cheesy, because that’s just how the show is. I can still predict some of the plot twists, but I don’t care, this is one of the shows I enjoy watching the most. With the return of a certain someone, I cannot wait for the new episodes next week!

You want to watch a fun show about a woman in publishing? Go watch Younger! Bonus, she has to pretend to be in her twenties even though she’s about 40. IT IS SO MUCH FUN!

Stranger Things

Sometimes I just give in to hype and I am so very glad I did not regret doing so with Stranger Things. It was an 80s nostalgia bomb and I weirdly didn’t find it all that scary. They did the whole monster-thing the smart way, by not revealing it for several episodes. And I read a lot of interviews and it’s so interesting to see how they changed a lot of the story and characters while shooting, simply because the actors/actresses provided more than they hoped for. Also, #JusticeForBarb! (I want her pop funko figurine for sure)

I have a dramatic love/hate-relationship with Sense8. I ADORE the show itself, I HATE the wait for the new season. I was craving something new, so naturally I couldn’t restrain myself and watched the Christmas Special … and I cried and I laughed and I was reminded why I love these characters so much … AND NOW I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL MAY!?!?!? How is that fair???

I found this gem just in time to watch its final episodes unfold. Hidden somewhere on Sundance TV, I didn’t even know it existed a couple weeks ago, but now I am strongly convinced that this was one of the most powerful and gorgeous stories of the year. It’s about a man getting out of prison after having been in solitary confinement for somewhat 20 years. The journey into his mind, the painful and beautiful moments alike, where something memorable for sure. Also, this show manifested my love for Abigail Spencer for sure!

Animal Kingdom

Very twisted, very violent, very surprised I liked this … but the guys below may have had something to do with it. (also, I’ve never seen the Australian movie this is based on)

Jenna Coleman, who is one of my actress-queens, playing an actual queen – count me in! Even though it’s based no Queen Victoria’s life, I was still as invested as ever when it came to her love life, her relationship to Lord M and Albert. So many feels!

I am so massively disappointed in Ross as a person, however, I wouldn’t miss a single episode of the show … ever? If I could have had my way, I would have had Demelza run off with Dwight, but whateves, he’s happy … for now … Demelza also better not have any reason to doubt her husband again.

This one was another surprise. It seems over the top and to the point of silly sometimes, but I like the underlying message and support it offers. I would have never guessed that MTV would present us a show taking on rape culture and really condemning it too.

I liked the first season of Daredevil but the second one was so much better. They perfectly introduced the Punisher and deservingly gave him a show of his own right after. Also, Karen stepped up her game in my opinion. Generally I just really enjoyed that season, even though it once more got more brutal.

Honorable Mentions

This is the part where you realise that, yes, I am simply watching too many shows. I am just going to rattle off some more shows I enjoyed, because why not?

  • Gilmore Girls Revival
  • Timeless
  • Conviction
  • Notorious
  • The 100
  • Hit the Floor
  • Humans
  • Westworld
  • Shadowhunters (ONLY because of Malec)
  • iZombie
  • Jane the Virgin
  • The Librarians
  • Travelers
  • Game of Thrones
  • Vikings
  • Dark Matter
  • Lost Girl
  • Lucifer
  • The Magicians
  • Our Girl
  • All the CW superhero shows (Arrow, Supergirl, Flash, Legends of Tomorrow)

Now that I’ve mentioned as many more shows here as I have on the actual list … I think I should quit, even though I am pretty sure I could still come up with quite a couple of shows. Remind me, how do I have time for anything in life? Which shows have you watched? Which ones are your favourites?

  1. Class… Or the show that made me throw away a wonderful and yummy cheeseburger. I still haven’t found the courage to resume watching, haha! But I do want to so I’ll have hubby watch with me later this week. I love the characters so I should be able to overcome the blood :p
YOUNGER!!!! I’ve started season 3 😀 I was so happy at the end of season two because of a particular thing that I wanted to happen *tries to be vague for everyone that hasn’t seen the show*
I loved Victoria, it felt so good to see Jenna again.
Gilmore Girls of course. Well, you’ve booked my TV nights with awesomeness, girl! Please please, keep up the good work for 2017!

  2. I have The Shannara Chronicles on my Netflix queue but haven’t watched it yet because I own the book and wanted to read the book before watching the show. I didn’t want to give in to the Stranger Things hype either, but it sounded intriguing and I love 80’s sci-fi such as back to the future and the x-files (if that’s 80’s…. can’t remember). I’ve only watched the first two episodes so I’m still a bit behind but that’s just because I’m writing in-depth reviews on every episode lol. At least I won’t have as long of a wait for season 2 as other people that watched the series right when it came out. I still haven’t watched season 2 of Daredevil! I have only watched the first episode ergh. I really need to get onto that. I loved the Gilmore Girls Revival! It was perfect. Or at least close to perfect. I still haven’t finished it though! My mom had me stop it 20 minutes before the last episode was over because she was crying so much and didn’t want to cry anymore. Haha I like how you mention that Shadowhunters is only on this list because of Malec.

    • I have the Elfstones of Shannara at home, but I heard the book was nothing like the TV show by fans of the book series. Well, I haven’t read it yet, so I cannot judge. I fell in love with the show for sure though.
Weeeeeell … I wouldn’t call the Gilmore Girls revival perfect … I hated how it ended, but I guess you still have that ahead of you.
Shadowhunters was just so utterly underwhelming … I wouldn’t have mentioned without them at all.

      • Yeah GG isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty darn good considering other revivals. Shadowhunters was so underwhelming, but by what I’ve seen in trailers, it looks like season 2 will be better.

  3. Awesome list!!! I think it was thanks to your recommendation that I checked out Shannara chronicles- and I’m so glad I did cos I loved it! I’ve heard so many good things about stranger things- gonna have to get round to watching it at some point! And yes, I was disappointed with Ross too :/ But on the bright side, I love redemption story arcs, so who knows, *fingers crossed* I might end up changing my mind next season and go back to loving him. And I think it’s fairly obvious that my favourite tv show is always gonna be game of thrones 😉

  4. I SHOULDN’T HAVE READ THIS. Now I have like ten new shows to watch, you’re a bad influence 😂
I will go one by one so sorry for this comment
Do I need to watch anything before starting Class? Because I’m surious and you mentioned Doctor Who (which I haven’t watched) so I’m not sure…
The Shannara Chronicles was such a good show! I really loved it and I can’t wait for it to come back!
Wynonna Earp sounds like the kind of female characters I like and I didn’t know about it! I’m deifnitely adding this!
I have watched two episoded from The OA and it’s weird…I really liked the Russia thing but it’s weird. I don’t understand a thing but I’m going to continue and see what happens.
Can you tell me a bit about Sense8, I have heard about it but I don’t know what it’s about or if I should start it.
Rectify sounds great and I love Abigail in Timeless (which you mentioned in other tv shows and I loove it!! ♥♥♥) so I’m excited to see her somewhere else.
Victoria was great to watch! I love that kind of shows and Albert was just 👌 But Victoria and Albert’s relationship was so sweet and I loved watching it. I shipped her with Lord M too but Albert was Albert ♥
I have to agree with you about Poldark, on everything.
I have watched just two episodes of the second season of Daredevil but sometimes just was too much violence, I would like to continue it though.
I started The Librarians this month and I only have seaason 3 to catch up with, I’m enjoying it soo much! It’s like something I would have watched when I was younger and I would still enjoy.
The 100 is always good but I feel a bit weird about it, like it has changed so much from the beginning, the plot, the characters, I feel it different (I will continue watching it of course 😂)
Woow, sorry for this long comment 😂
I definitely enjoyed the post 😀

    • #SorryNotSorry – recommending TV shows feels like my unofficial job hahaha
I am just going to try and go through them all like you did, don’t apologise for the long comment. I love it already!
So, Class. It’s a Doctor Who spin-off show and if you know absolutely nothing about Doctor Who, I am not sure how much the show will make sense. I don’t think you necessarily need to have seen DW though, the Doctor just shows up in the first episode. All the big references are in that first episode and something at the very end, but it’s nothing a quick google search couldn’t fix if you are very curious before the beginning of Season 2. That should boil down to – not necessarily, but you’ll miss small references. It’s very much it’s own show though.
I am still so sad because of a certain someone turning into a tree …
I adore Wynonna Earp, she is so badass. The show could do with a bigger budget, but I feel like, if people can accept Shadowhunters, they should accept this as well. Although it’s darker, way darker.
The OA … I watched the whole thing and it’s a freaking maze inside an enigma inside a mystery. I am still not sure I know what that was.
Sense8 – sure! It’s about 8 people who live all over the planet and are connected via their mind. It’s a unique connection and they are called a cluster. They share emotions, skills and they can help each other out in tricky situations or talk with each other as if they were right next to each other. It’s also quite mysterious, but not as much as The OA! There’s an organisation that wants to catch them and therefore they are in danger. It’s really something!
Except really slow storytelling and the cruel kind of human experience from Rectify. It’s quite brutal, emotional and physical sometimes. But I think Abigail performs splendidly. (yes!!! Love Timeless too, but I felt that I couldn’t put it on the top list because I haven’t even seen a whole season.)
In the end I was Team Albert all the way too, but I loved that they were able to set up Lord M as a real prospect. It broke my heart to see him having to give her to Albert.
      Glad you agree on Poldark.
I hear you on Daredevil and I am going to fill you in on a secret – I fast forward during fights sometimes. Don’t like the gory stuff.
I think the Librarians is hilarious but I want to have some kind of romance for Cassie. It drives me nuts. Maybe her and Stone?
The 100 sure has changed a lot, but I think it was really ballsy of the CW to go that way. I am excited where they go from here, but i am also scared. They have already endured so much.

      • Maybe I will give Class an opportunity and see how it goes!
I already added Wynonna and I’m really excited about it. I started another series hoping to really like the main character but sadly I didn’t. And this also sounds good!
Sense8 sounds great, I’ll give it an opportunity soon!
I know, it was so sad but at the same time I think he understood, anyway his heart wanted something else.
Ohhh, that’s a good idea, I might do that because there was a fight, I swear he fought for 10 mins at least and men kept coming for him from nowhere. He knocked them down but there still were more and I was almost like ‘Is it over now? Is it over now?’
Yaaas!!! I have shipped them sometimes, like small moments they support each other or stuff like that, I would love to see it!
        Yes, that’s true.
Now that I’m on holidays after the end of the year I want to start and catch up with lots of tv shows!

  5. I read in my Entertainment Weekly today that they are producing more episodes and we might see a spring premiere, but that’s a maybe, and EW didn’t exactly say where they got their info from. I also loved Stranger Things, though it took me a while to get to. And I wish you’d listed Lucifer, because that show makes my day every time I watch it.

  6. Demelza is undoubtedly the best thing about the show, although Dwight does melt my heart a bit. If I can watch another series of Demelza being all empowering and standing up for herself I’d be a happy girl…I also hope Ross gets some sense knocked back into him.

  7. Ahhh so many amazing TV shows! Totally looking forward to trying out OA, it really does look disturbingly beautiful. Stranger Things was one of the best TV shows of 2016 FOR SUREEEE! I mean… what a surprise this show was. It grew in popularity so quick, and it had everything to become a success! #friendsdontlie

  8. SENSE 8 IS MY HEART. I LOVE IT. There were so many shows that I hadnt heard of on here – will definitely check them out. Big time agree with Shadowhunters too; I love Magnus and Alec – the rest fell a bit flat, though x

  9. A lot of these are my favourites too – especially Stranger Things. I also completely agree about Poldark: love the series, but I am soooo not happy with Ross right now; Demelza is the real hero. And I have to watch Wynonna Earp, it sounds so good!
