So, I decided it was finally time to do this! The year may have had its ups and downs in general, but in terms of reading it was really good, so the decision making process was not easy. I included quite a couple of series and in case I read all of them in 2016, I simply put the first one on the list. Some of them may be debatable, but that’s what the comment section is for – here are my favourites!
- This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab
- A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab
- Red Rising Trilogy by Pierce Brown
- Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin
- The Wrath & the Dawn Duology by Renée Ahdieh
- The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater
- A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
- Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare
- Six of Crows Duology by Leigh Bardugo
- The Worldwalker Trilogy by Josephine Angelini
From my selection you can see that it was a very good year for Fantasy, but because I like to do honorable mentions, here are some more great stories from the bookish world:
- The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner
- A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
- Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
- Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman/Jay Kristoff
- Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
- You Know Me Well by Nina LaCour/David Levithan
Now that’s exactly 16 books and I am going to stop to make sure it doesn’t get out of hand like the TV show-list. What were some of your faves from 2016?
I love your choices (and how the first few are all red)/

Thanks! That may or may not have been on purpose … hahaha

The Woman in Cabin 10 was a good mystery. Hex was a pretty compelling novel. And of course I fell in love with the Red Rising trilogy.
Are you going to do Top 10 movies as well?

Nope, no movies from me. I didn’t feel like I watched all that much and most of it I forgot already. And I didn’t even get to see my most anticipated movie yet

Doctor Strange?

That movie would not have made it on my list to be honest. I liked it, but I didn’t love it.

Then what?

I don’t know, so I am not making a list.

I DID see Doctor Strange. I saw all the superhero movies.

Or do you mean what my most anticipated movie was that I haven’t watched yet? Because that was The Edge of Seventeen.

Sounds like it would be, given your tastes.

A Gathering of Shadows, Wolf by Wolf, The Wrath and the Dawn and Six of Crows are my current best of the fantasy lot. I’m still reeling from most of them and I’m so sad to see that most of them have come to an end. However, the multitude of Schwab books we’ll be getting this year is always a treat!

Yay for shared favourites 😀 I cannot wait for Our Dark Duet and the conclusion to the Shades of Magic world either. I love those stories!

Great list! Oh my goodness! any time I see a fellow blogger has read Red Rising, I must stop whatever i’m doing to give them a virtual *high five* LOL! I’m ready for whatever Mr. Brown has in store for us with Iron Gold! Happy Reading in 2017! 🙂

I wanna hug you, fellow Brown enthusiast! I’ve been advocating for his books all year long and I mentioned them an annoying amount of time which FINALLY got a lot of people to add it to their TBR and some to even read them. So far no one disliked them, so I am very happy about that. I AM SO READY FOR IRON GOLD!

Haha!!! 🤗🤗🤗 yes! I do the same, I’m basically free promotion for anything Pierce Brown at this point lol. Iron Gold is going to be EPIC! Feel it in my bones 😂😂😂

Awe, and I love The Book Thief, but I didn’t read it this year.

Great choices, Kat! I’ve read and pretty much loved most of the fantasy books you mentioned – the first five especially were among some of my better reads of 2016, so I’m glad to hear that you liked them too.
And The Serpent King and A Monster Calls? So heartbreaking and just beautifully written. ❤

Thanks, Reg! I actually finished the post and then I was like “DARN IT!” because I forgot all about The Serpent King and A Monster Calls, so I just did the laziest thing possible and added them that way hahaha

Ah there’s so much overlap with your favourites and mine! Schwab pretty much dominated my top ten last year- her books are always excellent! And you know my feelings about Red Rising!!! I am excited to see Court of Mist and Fury, Wolf by Wolf and Six of Crows on here cos I want to read them!! Great post!

Great choices, Kat! I love how everything’s red in the first line of books haha. Also, The wrath and the dawn, such a beautiful, beautiful book, and The Raven Boys, and AGOS… ❤ ❤ I'm glad The Serpent King earned a place in here, it's such a heartbreaking story, but I loved it. 🙂

Yeah, I realised how much red there was and then I thought I’d just throw them all in the same row. I wanted the other line to be blue, but that didn’t work out so well hahaha

The Raven Boys deserves its place on your top ❤ There are so many books on your list I haven't read yet, it can only mean I have plenty of fantastic reading hours ahead of me 😍

Yes, there sure are some amazing books on there! I am not sure that all of them are equally suitable for everyone, but I bet there are some you’d really enjoy as well 😀 ❤

Yay for Wolf By Wolf! I’m posting my list tomorrow, and that book is on there, too. Also glad to see This Savage Song (didn’t quite make my list, but it was close) and Six of Crows (one of my favorite reads of 2015). Are you planning to read Crooked Kingdom soon?
I need to read Red Rising soon. I have a copy, but I just haven’t made it a priority yet. And oh oh OH, I finally read A Darker Shade of Magic over New Year’s weekend, and it was AWESOME. 😀 😀

I already read Crooked Kingdom, I am just suuuuuper behind on my reviews. They will be written in the following order: Gemina, Crooked Kingdom, Witch’s Pyre and Sleeping Giants. Then I shall have peace of mind again hahaha
Red Rising is one of my many true bookish loves! I cannot wait for Iron Gold to come out!

Love the colour theme you’ve got going on there! Unfortunately I am useless and have read none of them, but I have just added a load of them to Goodreads. Love the post 😀

I seriously never realised how similar in colour most of my reads were. It was a nice surprise hahaha
Which ones did you add? Did anything particularly stand out to you?

Wolf by Wolf particularly stood out to me and I actually put it on my ‘must by soon’ list I use when book shopping.

Yay! That’s a good one for sure 🙂 I do not recommend looking into the German language aspect too much, but if you aren’t familiar with the language, you should have a blast reading it.

I barely know any German so I’m safe on that front. Thanks for introducing the book to me! 😀

I am just really happy it sparked your interest 😀 let’s hope you’ll also enjoy the full story (although I am not too worried).

If nothing else, 2016 was a damn good book year. Six of Crows and Wolf by Wolf were just the best duologies. They were both completely immersive series… and total heart breakers.
I’m only two books into The Raven Cycle, but I’m really really liking it so far. I am so attached to all of the characters, and the world is one I want to spend more time hanging out in.
Here’s to another good reading year in 2017 🙂

Ohh, so many reds you read this year (:
I’m totally in agreement on The Wrath & The Dawn (although I read it last year) and of course LADY MIDNIGHT! *insert love-struck emoji here*
I loved the way you arranged the covers ^^

Wow, 2016 has had you discover so many of those buzz books huh? 😀 Glad you were able to enjoy so many of those crazy popular titles. I do plan on checking out V.E. Schwab’s A Darker Shade of Magic and all her other wonderful books besides Savage Song this year! That’s bound to be epic! 😀 Hope 2017 has even more awesomeness in store for you.
