Trailers You Might Have Missed … (March 20-26)

How have you been, folks? I know I haven’t been super active, but I am getting back to it. Sort of. There’s just been a lot on my mind lately and somehow blogging and writing and reading just got pushed to the very back of my priority list. I feel like I am getting back on track now though, so, keep your fingers crossed. Here are some trailers for the meantime!

Justice League

I don’t even really care what this shows, because I have extremely low expectations for everything that’s cinematic DC. I am sorry, but they keep on putting out not terrible trailers at all and then the movies are just a mess.

Death Note

I don’t care how often people tell me that things are different because this version of Death Note is set in America, they cannot tell me that there are no Japanese-American actors available for really any of the roles! Especially not since they even refused to let some people audition. I expected better from Netflix.

Captain Underpants

Their voices don’t sound like child-voices at all, but it still looks funny.

The Last Face

Charlize has some interesting movies coming out.

Little Boxes

I actually like the look of this.

The Sweet Life

I am pretty sure I would at least attempt to watch anything Abigail Spencer is in.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Interesting use of billboards.

Queen of the Desert

While I do find the desert very beautiful and I am sure it will look gorgeous on the screen, this story already bores me.

They just won’t stop making biodramas.

Casting JonBenet

Yeah, Netflix once more not afraid to get weird.

Handsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie

Yeah, not for me.

TV Shows

The Night Shift (Season 4)

I kind of haven’t even noticed there was a season 2 and 3.

What are you watching? I am still completely obsessed with the new Power Rangers movie! I am in loooove.

  1. I remember reading the Captain Underbooks books in junior school. Dav Pilkey has a really unique style, where he’ll switch between prose and deliberately-amateur sequential art strips. To provide exposition he’ll interrupt chapters with news reports, and then jump back into the chapter already in progress when that information is becoming relevant. I want to revisit them sometime, but I’m worried that they might not live up to how I remember them.

  2. Thoughts:
    1. Yeah, if Wonder Woman fails to impress, I won’t even bother with this one. I’m tired of superhero movies from this franchise where the trailer is the best part.
    2. I actually am willing to give this Death Note a chance. It looks like it was done in the spirit of the original. The accusations of whitewashing are often hurled rather inconsistently with these sorts of movies (there was a Cowboy Bebop film in development for a while that would’ve starred Keanu Reeves, and people seemed to dig that). Besides, the Japanese don’t really care about this sort of thing. A lot of them were pretty cool with Scarlett Johannsen for Ghost in the Shell, because she looked like the character. And if the Japanese made a movie based off an American superhero character, we probably wouldn’t get all bent out of shape if they cast an Asian actor in a white role.
Of course, this is just my personal opinion. Everyone’s free to disagree.
Though I do admit, they could’ve tried a bit harder to cast actors who actually look like the characters. Light’s not a blonde, and if that girl was Misa, she is supposed to be a blonde!
    3. OMG, I remember being a huge Captain Underpants fan as a kid! I will definitely try to see this when it comes out with my sister. We will probably laugh our butts off.
    4. I’ve been wanting to learn more about the JonBenet case for a while, but it’s hard to find good documentaries on the subject (or to find them on the streaming sites I use). This might just do it for me.

Also, they’re releasing the first trailer for the new adaptation of Stephen King’s It on Wednesday. I CANNOT WAIT!

    • 1. I might still see Justice League because of Jason Momoa, but only because of him.
      2. I heard from a lot of people that they would have been more comfortable with the casting of exclusively non-Asian actors and actresses if they had at least bothered to change the names of the characters, which they didn’t. They could have kept the spirit of the story, the notebook and stuff, but with some new characters. No one is saying there aren’t any white people allowed in the movie, but this is still weird, especially considering that they didn’t let people audition. They refused to see some Japanese-descent actors, I mean, come on?
Also, I don’t know where you heard that about Scarlett Johannsen, because all I heard was the same uproar as there was with that Matt Damon movie about the wall.
Lastly, when the Japanese decide to make a movie remake of an American film, they are most likely making it for Japan only. I am not saying their products don’t get exported, but less so than whatever the US is doing when it comes to film and TV. And now consider that this is Netflix, so they are making this for a worldwide audience. Kind of accurate representation surely wouldn’t have hurt.
      3. Must be an English and American thing, because I don’t think we had Captain Underpants here.
      4. I hadn’t heard about that before either.
(I hope you’ll know that I’ll most likely not include the It trailer once it’s out hahaha)

      • 2. I agree, it might have been better if they had Asian actors. Still, it is what it is, and I still want to see this movie. As for where I got the thing about the Japanese and Scarlet Johannsen, I got it from here:
        3. It is available in Austria (the German version is published in Vienna), but I can’t find when it was first printed in Germany, so it may have first come to Austria and Germany well after the age you or I would read the series.
        4. I expected as much. i promise I won’t post it on your timeline if you don’t want me to.

      • 1. Hmmm, I watched the video. I find that man very condescending for the most part. And I never said you shouldn’t watch the movie, but this is a real issue for a reason and even the youtube video said we shouldn’t stop voicing our concerns on these topics.
        2. Never said it didn’t exist in Austria, just that it wasn’t a thing, meaning it wasn’t and isn’t popular from what I can tell from my own childhood and me working at a bookstore.
        3. I would prefer it if you didn’t post it on my timeline. I generally don’t like that or to be tagged in comments on Facebook to be honest.

      • 1. You should see his reviews. They’re meant to make you laugh. And yeah, I definitely see the issue, and I definitely believe you should speak out if you see a problem. On that, we can agree.
        2. Hmm.
        3. I keep forgetting that you don’t like that. Sorry.

  3. Oh gosh I feel the exact same way about DC movies- I watch the trailers think “yeah it looks good, but I’m not watching it until everyone else has told me it’s actually good this time”. But I’m glad the new power rangers movie was good!

    • The Power Rangers movie was everything I wanted it to be! It had diverse characters (people of colour in the main roles, a guy who’s on the spectrum and a girl who might be part of the LGBT community to just name a couple things), it made me laugh and cry. It was super dorky and had hilarious references but it was also cooler in a way. The camera work was really nicely done too. I just fell head over heels.

  4. I’m excited for Death Note. But I’m not getting my expectations up too high for it. It’s either going to be really good or really bad. I have high hopes for it being Netflix.

    • Usually I am more supportive about stuff that’s done by Netflix, because they take great care of the stories they want to portray. I am however disappointed about their actions during the casting process.

      • Yeah. I have a feeling I’m going to be very disappointed with this movie. I love the show (haven’t read the manga) and I don’t think anything will be able to compare for me.
