September 2017 Wrap-Up

So … uhm … I haven’t read a single book during this month. I tried, believe me I did, but as of right now, my brain just won’t compute. My attention to focus on a page is virtually non-existent and I’d rather not force myself to read. However, I did get approved for another eARC and my cousin left me a book as well, so I have even MORE reading material with me.

  • Masked by J.D. Wright
I do read superhero comics, but not really novels. I was just really curious if I would like it in that format.
  • The Epic Crush of Genie Lo by F.C. Yee
So, this book isn’t technically mine, but my cousin didn’t want to take it with her and left it with me instead. I guess I will give it back to her when we are both in Vienna (but I might conveniently forget that until next year? Just kidding, Julia!).

I know I keep saying this every single month, but where the heck is the time going? It feels like just yesterday that I arrived in Canada and now I only have one more month in Vancouver. I do not want to leave whatsoever … However, I am kind of looking forward to do another blogger meet up in Toronto in November, shortly before I’ll return back home. It was tons of fun the last time and I just love that I can meet up with some fellow bloggers in real life, because it doesn’t really feel like an option back in Austria.

Since I talk about visiting sets each month, I am doing that again. I’ve watched some stunt scene filming for Deadpool and the Flash. Those are always fascinating to watch, but terrible to take pictures because security is tight. But cars getting flipped, explosions, stuff burning and telephone polls falling down and spewing electric sparks is something you don’t get to see every day (or at least I hope not).
I’ve also been to the set of Arrow and the winner of the month with the most set visits is Once Upon a Time! I am at a point where some of the crew recognises me (Sarah, who is called the Leaf Lady by fans, even gave me a free rubber bracelet!) and the running gag with the other fans is that the cast has to try to get my attention and not the other way around. I don’t mean to ignore them, but sometimes I am not paying attention or I am having fun with my friends and they’ll wave at me or even say something and I won’t notice. It has lead to quite a lot of hilarious/embarrassing moments.

I also got to go to a concert by Andrew Belle and it was so much fun. The location wasn’t that big, so it felt very intimate and exclusive too in a way. Andrew stayed after the concert to talk to everyone and so did his bandmates, who were his opening act. They were super nice to talk to and Andrew signed a bunch of post cards I bought and even took a picture with me. It was a dark club and I looked terrible, but I will still cherish that memory.

I already mentioned my cousin earlier and that’s because she was visiting me here in Vancouver these past two weeks. It was very interesting to have her here, a bit of a worlds-colliding-situation, but I am glad she came and got to see a bit of my life here. Although, I am still a bit bitter that none of the sets we went to while she was here worked out. I wanted to find a fun one and it did not work whatsoever.
Anyway, my favorite part of her visit was probably our little weekend escape to Victoria. We went whale watching and I absolutely adored it (aside from our biologist looking like French YouTuber/comedian Cyprien), it made me want to live on a boat. My phone wasn’t really the best to take pictures of the whales, but it was one  of those experiences where I rather wanted to be in the moment than see it all on a screen.

Lastly, I just want to mention some new shows I absolutely adore! I really didn’t expect to love The Orville or The Good Doctor as much as I do. I am still a bit on the fence about Inhumans and I have yet to watch Star Trek Discovery. I will do a round-up post on all opinions for new shows a little later this season. There’s still so much to come!

ALL SORTS OF TAGS

TV SHOW/MOVIE POSTS

TRAILER POSTS

I hope you all had a great month as well! Let’s chat!

Tag: This-Is-My-Truth-Now

You know me, I am ALWAYS behind on tags, but this one came with a condition … so, I had no choice but to go with it! Let me warn you, it’s a super mean one but in a strange way also very fun. Thanks a lot to the Orang-utan Librarian for tagging me – you can check out their post by clicking on their name! We’ve been following each other for a while now and I always love stopping by their blog (also, feeling low-key special that I know their real name – although I will NEVER tell!) Okay, enough chit-chat, let’s dive into it!

RULES

  1. Create your own new post and call it “Tag: This-Is-My-Truth-Now” and be sure to include in your tags the words — without quotes — “ThisIsMyTruthNow Tag”
  2. Include these rules when you copy/paste to your own post.
  3. Be sure to thank the person that tagged you and include their responses at the bottom of your post, so someone can get to know them too. Tell everyone something interesting about the person who tagged you.
  4. Include a link to my original post mentioning this blog so we can see how many people choose to play along. Link to cut/paste is:  ThisIsMyTruthNow
  5. Choose 12 bloggers to tag and include a link to their latest post, so others can check them out and meet new people.
  6. Answer all 12 questions in The Challenge Questions section, but replace the 12th question with your own new one around telling the truth or revealing something interesting about yourself — you can leave the existing if you can’t think of something.
  7. Be sure to copy/paste the “Truth or Dare” section at the end of this post. It’s important to the challenge — so you better carefully read it!
  8. If you’ve haven’t been tagged, but you want to play along, you can totally jump on in and post responses to the tag on your blog.

THE CHALLENGE QUESTIONS:

1. You’re on your way to a birthday dinner that your friends have thrown for you. When you arrive, your favorite author is having dinner by himself or herself and asks you to sit with them, before you even see your friends or they see you. You have two choices: (1) You can sit with the author but can’t tell your friends that you’ve abandoned them for three hours, or (2) Meet your friends and lose the only chance you’ll ever have to talk with the author. Pick one or the other — no exceptions or communication to your friends to tell them about the author — and explain why.

I know this makes me sound like the worst friend, but I would definitely stick with the author. Think about it, it would be my only chance to ever meet them, they would have initiated contact (which, let’s face it, is pretty amazing) and I would like to think that my friends would understand as soon as I got a chance to explain it to them. I feel like it would be a whole different story if I were just meeting up with a single friend, but they aren’t waiting alone … and it’s my birthday, I should have an allowance for maximum selfishness!

Also, I want to see you say “no” to this face!

2. You’ve got an opportunity to spend a few hours alone “in your bedroom” with a character from any book you’ve previously read. The character tells you that (s)he would like to lock the door and spend some alone time with you. What book and character is it, and do you decide to enter the room and lock the door, or tell them you aren’t interested?

Wow, this got naughty real quick! Or my mind just goes there and that means I am the naughty one … ANYWAY! This might be a super random answer but I am going with Nick Sorrentino from the Bitten books. I have zero explanation but that’s who my mind went to first and I would … lock the door?

3. If you could turn any male character from one of your favorite books into a female character (or change a female into a male) in the book or book series, which one and why?

I’ve honestly never wanted to change anyone’s gender while reading … at least not that I could remember. My mind is going completely blank. Sorry for the boring answer.

4. What blogger currently on your follower’s list (meaning they follow you too) do you admire the most and why?

Did I mention how mean this tag is? I just want you to know that I love, admire and appreciate you all. I’ve met so many great people on here and I wouldn’t want to miss anyone from my life. To answer this question though, I would say Marie @Drizzle and Hurricane Books. She’s one of the sweetest people out there, always has an open ear and is so very engaged on everyone’s blog. I just don’t know how she does it! She has great original content and still checks out what everyone else does. She is simply amazing!

5. If you could change any one decision your favorite book character made, what would it be and why?

This feels like it is bound to lead to spoilers if I say something specific. However, a lot of the time I just wish there was more communication, because so many annoying incidences could have been avoided if people just TALKED with each other.

6. If you could pick 1 character from a book and 1 character from a TV show you watch (that is NOT based on a book) to be in a relationship together, who would you choose, and why?

Okay, maybe random again but I would pair Dorothy from Emerald City with Benvolio from Star-Crossed. In my head that would work really well, because Benvolio is such a faithful and good soul and she needs someone by her side unconditionally … unlike someone else who majorly disappointed/confused me.

7. It’s your last day on Earth. As you are about to cross that final finish line, a mysterious shadow appears, giving you a choice: (1) You can go move forward to whatever comes next for you [based on your own spiritual or religious beliefs], or (2) you can become a character in a book series and exist permanently doing whatever that author chooses to do with you in the book. Which do you choose, and if it’s option 2, reveal the book and author.

I am not a super religious person, but I have the hopes that I would get to be reunited with all the people I love in whatever afterlife provides for us. Turning down that chance to be in a book doesn’t really seem worth it. And I should add that I sometimes feel we are all book characters (or Sims) in some higher developed species book(/game) anyway. At least that’s what life feels like to me at times …

8. If you could steal a pet from someone in any book you’ve read, but had to replace it with a friend’s pet (meaning they wouldn’t ever see their pet again), would you do it? If so, explain the who and why.

I would never rob my friends of their pet!!! I am not that cruel.

9. If you could turn someone from your real life into a character from a book, who from your life, who in the book and why?

The thought process here confuses me a little. Would that mean that I would get rid of that person that I am switching out for the book character? What if I just don’t want to get rid of anyone in my real life?

If I had a nemesis, (which I don’t, because who do you think I am?) I would put them in a terrible dystopian world or something.

10. Post a picture of the cover of a book you read in 2000 and the book you are currently reading now. (Note: if you weren’t alive in 2000, pick the first book you ever read and tell everyone what year it was from).

I don’t understand how you expect me to remember what I read 17 years ago … I was like 7? I am just going to take a wild guess I suppose.

11. Your favorite character (under 18) needs a place to stay for 3 months and asks you if (s)he could stay in your spare room (yes, you have one for the sake of this question). Who is it and what is the reason (s)he needs to stay with you?

AUGUST FLYNN IS WELCOME IN MY HOME ANY DAY OF THE YEAR! I am pretty sure he needs a place to crash because he wants to get away from monsters, dreadful responsibilities and danger in general. My poor baby! He’s going to be showered with hugs and comforting tea.

12. If you could jump in and out of ONE book for the rest of your life but would get stuck in it forever if you changed a major event or revealed your true identity, would you risk it? If so, which book would go into and why? (Note: This is the question each person can change when they tag their own nominees)

So, I made up this question myself, because I was confused about the instructions and the link in the post didn’t work for the 365 challenge. So, this is also the question for my nominees, but they will have to make up a separate one for their tagged people (if I understand the process correctly).

Despite having made up this question, I am too much of a scaredy cat to go through with it. I would alter something and then get stuck … which might not be the worst thing, but all the books that come to mind as contenders require some sort of survival skill that I do not posses. So, I would admire my beloved characters from afar. Also, sometimes it’s just better not to meet your heroes.

I TAG THEE

(I know I only tagged 6 people, but at least I tried?)

Cátia | Cristina | Marie | Melissa | Rami | Savannah

TRUTH OR DARE:

Oh, did I forget to tell you the last part of the ThisIsMyTruthNow tag? If you choose not to accept the tag, you have to follow through on whatever dare the person who tags you chooses — for my nominees, if you choose not to do this tag, your dare is to do book aesthetics for the last 5 books you gave the lowest ratings to. (That’s not too bad, right?)

Kind of relieved to be done with this – now, have fun!

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Sept 18-24)

I am spending the weekend away from Vancouver (in Victoria) and I am having a great time. Still, I did not forget the trailers for you all, so I do expect the minimum amount of praise … just kidding! Here’s what I found this week!

Movies

Peter Rabbit

Domhnall would be the only reason I’d watch this …

Tomb Raider

Okay, so, I LOVE Alicia Vikander. But I also love Lara Croft … I had like action figurines as a kid and I basically wanted to be her and … I am not super psyched about this? I just … when I look at her, I don’t think Lara.

Just Getting Started

Morgan Freeman is awesome … but he keeps doing same-ish movies now.

Cook Off!

Interesting format.

November Criminals

I am curious about it, but at the same time something doesn’t feel right.

The Guardian Brothers

I mean … the voice actors are all mostly award winning and amazing people but … I was hoping for at least one Chinese person? Is that really that weird to ask considering the story?

Isle of Dogs

Oh, the weirdness of Anderson movies. I like it.

Murder on the Orient Express

Still surprised how excited I am about this.

The Meyerowitz Story

Meh, I don’t really have any thoughts on this.

The Secret Scripture

This looks intense.

Wonderstruck

Not sure what to think of it.

Revolt

Ugh … always those machines. Technology making life difficult … such a new concept.

All I See Is You

It started and I felt creeped out.

1922

I feel like someone was like “Let’s make ALL the King books into films this year”.

TV Shows

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Season 5)

I wasn’t aware how much I had missed this until I heard the theme. NINE NINE!

The Flash (Season 4)

Me watching this is just like “spot the all locations you visited”

The Punisher

This is the reason I binged all superhero shows. I need this soon!

Grey’s Anatomy (Season 14)

Let’s face it. I just can’t believe this is still a thing.

Once Upon a Time (Season 7)

Andrew single-handedly managed to get me excited for this season.

Hope you all had a great week! What are you going to watch?

Random Movie Recommendations #3

I am usually more of a TV person rather than a movie-buff, but I am really into this feature right now, so here are some more movie recs (not real reviews!). I feel like having a theme is kind of nice as well, so this week I am bringing to you movies that deal with fame and how it’s not always fun!

Be Somebody

I have a soft spot for teen star movies, but as I got older, I got more and more annoyed with the disney-fied or nickelodeon-ish kind of movies. They were always so over the top and in your face, and whereas the trailer might not suggest it, Be Somebody is an extremely calm movie. The music is also way better than what they showed here (even though you never once hear Jordan sing).

It’s a very simple movie. It’s cute, slow build and definitely teen appropriate. Like, this movie is so tame in comparison to some of the stuff that gets put out there. I really loved the visuals and even if not everything made 100% sense, it was still more logical than some of the previous “star gets tired of his life” films I have seen.

Beyond the Lights

This one is far more serious than the movie above. It’s similar in a way that the visuals are amazing, the pace is slow and allows for a nice build up, but that’s about it. The trailer already hints that there are much deeper rooted issues the main characters have to face and additionally you have a stunning soundtrack to go with it.

Be prepared for a lot of emotions with this one. Where the movie could have easily fallen into tropes and clichés, it felt incredibly real and gave each character their time to develop. Also, the cast is simply brilliant down to the cameo of MGK. No one feels one dimensional and those are always the best characters out there!

Do you have some good recommendations for movies that cover this topic? Did you see either one of the films I mentioned?

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Sept 11-17)

I feel like I’ve barely been home during this past week, which is not a bad thing in itself, it just means that I am constantly tired. Anyway, we are here to talk about trailers, so trailers you shall get!

Movies

Coco

I can’t believe that they’re playing Bittersweet Symphony in the background, that brings back so many memories.

Downsizing

I still think this looks awesome, I just want to know what the problem with downsizing is … because there has to be one?

The Disaster Artist

It’s ridiculous how much I actually want to watch this.

The Child in Time

This is going to be devastating.

All the Money in the World

What’s up with the abducting of children?

The Shape of Water

I want to watch this so bad!

Red Sparrow

I am usually kinda of into spy stuff, but this hasn’t peaked my interest.

The Commuter

Looks very on brand for Liam Neeson.

Our Souls at Night

Could be nice.

Kingdom of Us

Documentary of the week.

Fifty Shades Freed

I can’t believe this is still a thing.

TV Shows

Fuller House (Season 3)

I am actually really looking forward to this!

This is Us (Season 2)

It’s gonna be so many emotions again.

Jane the Virgin (Season 4)

Uhm … I stopped watching after a certain event last season. Sorry?

Lethal Weapon (Season 2)

Didn’t think this would last.

Supernatural (Season 13)

To everyone’s surprise … I am going to watch this season … for reasons?

Riverdale (Season 2)

It’s gonna get dark … and I still don’t know what’s up with that wedding?

How was your week? What are you watching?

Random Movie Recommendations #2

The mood has struck me again to do one of these random recommendation posts. (You know the drill, those aren’t really reviews, but just very brief thoughts on the films!) If you’ve kept up with my trailer rambles, you’ve probably noticed that I am a bit frustrated by the lack of romantic comedies or romance movies in general. When I was younger, I feel like they were coming out each week and now there is a trailer for a movie like that maybe once a week. So, that’s why I chose it as the theme for this post!

Home Again

I’ve had this movie in my trailer round up a couple of times and now that I finally watched it, I can only say that I am in love! I know that some people were concerned about the romantic aspect or the amount of love interests for Reese’s character, but let me tell you, worry not! I sat in that movie with the biggest grin on my face, awe-ing every other minute and completely falling in love with everyone.

What you can’t see from the trailer is that the three twenty-something guys are actually in the film business and that just made the whole story even more appealing to me. Also, it’s not so much about the romantic aspect in general, but family and a sense of belonging and knowing who you are and what’s important to you. I thought it was done in an incredibly sweet and funny way, I could have watched those people for hours and hours more.

It’s not the perfect movie, but it is the perfect escape. It’s easy to watch, makes you feel good and is great for a girl’s night out!

Carrie Pilby

I may not be a genius, but I could relate to Carrie on SO many levels! She loves reading, she sometimes has a difficult time going out and meeting new people, her dating life is a catastrophe … and so on! I haven’t read the book it is based on, but I am curious about that too now.

This may not be a RomCom so much as a comedy on the verge of drama, but in general, I just adored the casting and the vibe of the entire movie. It had such a charm to it, had some sharp dialogue, was hilarious but it also got you thinking a lot. It’s about finding your place in the world and the right people that will accompany you on the way. And, it’s about making the decisions that are right for you and that you can live with.

I highly recommend this for a binge on a rainy fall/winter day!

What are some comedies you’ve watched and liked lately? Have you watched either one of my films?

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Sept 4-10)

I can’t remember the last time I’ve been apart from my laptop as much as I was this week. A lot of fun stuff has happened, but I’ll go into more detail on that when the monthly wrap up comes around. Now it’s time for some trailers!

Movies

Lady Bird

I really want to watch this one!

The Man Who Invented Christmas

Aside from the fact that I like Dan Stevens, I think this might really be funny.

A Bad Moms Christmas

It’s way too early for all that Christmas stuff.

#realtyhigh

I watched this … it was very cliche and predictable.

Big Bear

Very weird, but I think I might actually watch this just because of the cast.

The Current War

I cannot say that I care much for the topic, but it looks well done.

Mudbound

I think this could be good.

Gaga: Five Foot Two

Documentary of the week.

TV Shows

The Magical Bus Rides Again

I am not a fan of the new animation … but nostalgia?

This Is Us (Season 2)

I know a lot of people who’ll be happy about that show returning!

Alias Grace

A lot of historical stuff happening.

Damnation

From the blurry thumbnail I thought Tom Hardy was in this for a second … but no.

Hope your week has been great! Let’s chat!

The Emperor’s New Clothes Tag

The Orang-utan Librarian sure is keeping me busy with tags, this time with an original creation called The Emperor’s New Clothes Tag. Let’s get right to it!

“YOUR MAJESTY, THIS IS A MAGIC SUIT” – An overhyped book that promised to be *something more*

A Shadow Bright and Burning (Kingdom on Fire, #1)It’s not so much that I don’t like the book, but I just expected MORE from A Shadow Bright and Burning. Maybe I was blinded by the cover, maybe I just had completely wrong expectations to begin with, but in the end it all comes down to the book lacking in some way. It’s not terrible at all, it could have been better is all I am trying to say.

“SOMEBODY SEND FOR THE QUEEN” – A love interest that wasn’t called for

Seriously, any book that has three guys or girls fawning over the the main character is just way too much. I’ve seen that happen once in real life and the person didn’t actively have to worry and chose one of them, because they were oblivious to the crushes. Anyway, back to the question, I will forever refuse to acknowledge Gale as a valid love interest in the Hunger Games series. Team Gale is a myth when it comes to the books!

“THE DOUBLET IS A LOVELY SHADE OF GREEN” – A book that seduced you with its cover (that you ended up disliking)

Love Letters to the DeadI hate it so much when this happens and the unfortunate thing is that it DOES keep happening. One of the most memorable to me was Love Letters to the Dead. I was really in love with it, but it did not hold up one bit. It felt like a genderswapped version of The Perks of being a Wallflower and since I didn’t love that book either, it just wasn’t for me.

“SUMMON THE COURT TO CONVENE” – A book where you were swayed by public opinion

I am going to have to go with the same answer as the Orang-utan Librarian here, because I used to love Twilight when I was young. I won’t ever deny that (#nobookshame!) but over time and with the franchise growing so immensely, I just kind of started to resent it more and more. I totally get it when people ridicule the books now, but at the same time I am sad that it has taken the joy out of it completely.

“LOOK AT THE THE KING! LOOK AT THE KING, THE KING, THE KING!” – A stark raving mad book that just boggles the mind

Sleeping Giants (Themis Files, #1)Mind boggling and crazy can be a good thing, right? So, I am going to go with Sleeping Giants, because it was insane in that quiet, dark and twisted way.

“IT’S ALTOGETHER THE VERY LEAST THE KING HAS EVER WORN” – A tropey get up you’ve seen before that probably needs redressing (aka a trope you’re bored with seeing)

That one will forever go to the absentee parents/guardians, because while I do understand that not all parents pay attention to their kids even when they should, it’s ridiculous how lacking they are in literature sometimes. Again, not saying they have to be good parents or anything like that, but when I was little I legit thought that the only way to go on an adventure is when you are an orphan.

“SUMMON THE COURT PHYSICIAN! CALL AN INTERMISSION!” – A book that needs medical attention aka a rewrite

Anne & HenryAnne & Henry is a modern day teenaged retelling of Anne Boleyn and King Henry VIII. When I first heard that, I was all over it, but I had hoped for so much more. The stakes just weren’t high enough, which made everything seem pointless and ridiculous.

“IT’S ALTOGETHER THE VERY LEAST THE KING HAS EVER WORN” –  There’s no hiding for this one: a book that is just nakedly bad

The HomecomingWhen you read a book, finish it and are still not sure what happened during the key event of the story, you just know it’s bad. That happened with the Homecoming for me.

BONUS: “HIS MAJESTY IS WIDE OPEN TO RIDICULE AND SCORN”- Something (anything) that astounds you with its popularity

I can’t really think of anything, but I want to keep the question in for the people that I tag … Okay, I know something. Avocados! I do not understand where their sudden popularity came from and I don’t like their taste.

I TAG THEE

Michelle | Flo | Vicky | Rachel | Samantha | EVERYONE

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Aug 28 – Sept 3)

It’s been a busy week here in Vancouver. I have moved to the other side of town and struggled with the heat wave, but that just gives me the perfect excuse to stay inside and binge watch some Netflix shows. Here are some new trailers for you!

Movies

Downsizing

Ooooh, I used to like movies were people were shrunk.

Killing Gunther

Not sure that’s my kind of weird.

Una

The cast of this is phenomenal! Also, I’d watch pretty much anything Riz Ahmed was in anyway.

Realive

Tom Hughes is doing such a great job on Victoria and this is like the complete opposite of that role, I really want to see what he does here.

Brawl in Cell Block 99

Everything is so dark this week.

Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House

This movie has way too long of a title.

Wormwood

Looks messed up.

Long Shot

Documentary of the week

TV Shows

The Punisher

I just binged all of Luke Cage, am halfway through Iron Fist and will watch the Defenders afterwards, just so I can watch this without a delay when it comes out.

Jack Whitehall: Travels with my Father

I seriously can’t wait. This will be so fun!

Young Sheldon

I usually don’t like shows where I know exactly what it will lead to, but this might just be super cute.

Chicago Fire (Season 6)

I strongly believe that they didn’t kill Casey.

This is it for today! Hope you had a great week, let’s chat!
