I Hate Everyone But You by Gaby Dunn & Allison Raskin (Book Review)

**I was provided with an eARC by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review!**

I am a fan of Allison Raskin’s and Gaby Dunn’s YouTube channel Just Between Us (and their earlier work on Buzzfeed) and when they announced that they wrote a book together, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. I Hate Everyone But You is told in emails and text messages, a format I very much enjoy because it flows easily and mostly turns out to be a super fast read. From the beginning, I thought it represented both Allison’s and Gaby’s voice really well, in fact so much so that their characters seem like teen copies of themselves. Having that base knowledge of them, I felt like I understood when they joked or when they were serious about something. I definitely understand the people that were offended by some of the remarks, but I pretty much read the entire book in their respective voices and for the most part that worked quite well for me. Both, Ava and Gen, are deeply flawed in some of their ways of thinking, but at the same time try to grow (when they are not being completely stubborn and self-centered). I think they become better people because of each other, while also learning how to depend less on each other while exploring the world around them … if that makes any sense.

Having said that, I am not entirely happy with the book. They really tried to pack everything there is in this one book (approaching topics such as finding your place in the LGBTQ+ community, anxiety, depression, mental health, addiction and many more), but at the same time didn’t really have an engaging or comprehensive plotline. I am serious, if you would ask me to summarise what it was about in one or two sentences, I would really struggle to say anything more than a timid “friendship?”. I’ve read quite a couple of novels that were character driven instead of plot driven and it worked fine for them, but because of the message format, I feel like there wasn’t enough room for development and us getting to know the characters in depth to warrant such an approach. The two girls always knew more about each other than we would ever find out about them as the reader.

Ultimately it was a fun and fast read, but it could have been better in some aspects.

Fazit: 3/5 stars! I guess I expected more?

Have you read I Hate Everyone But You? What are your thoughts?

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Oct 23-29)

Happy Hallo-weekend everyone! Or happy NaNo prep, whichever one you are currently more involved in. I hope you all had a great week, here’s some trailers for you!

Please be good, please be good, please be good …

Almost Friends

Freddie really enjoys playing the awkward smart guy, eh?

Journey’s End

Asa does not look old enough for this movie haha

The Breadwinner

Looks powerful.

Den of Thieves

I might watch this for Pablo Schreiber. I miss him as Mad Sweeney.

24 Hours to Live

Is this some kind of weird new sequel of In Time?

I guess the Western genre is getting a comeback these days as well.

I think I posted a different trailer for this already. Good trailer music.

Phantom Thread

I honestly just clicked because of Eliza and all of a sudden Pablo Schreiber appears again. The man’s been busy.

TV Shows

Marvel’s Runaways

I liked the teaser better, but still so looking forward to this.

The Resident

I doubt it can top the glory that is The Good Doctor at the moment, but I do like the cast.

A lot of medical/first-responder dramas out there already, but okay.

How are you doing? Where are you on Stranger Things? (I binged it too fast and miss it already!)

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Oct 16-22)

This week has shown Vancouver’s true colors with a looot of rain that there was even #Raincouver trending on Twitter. You know it’s bad when even the locals are complaining. Anyway, my friend says it’s because Vancouver is sad to see me leave and I’ll take that explanation for now. Back to the topic on hand, here are your trailers!

Black Panther

I have no words for how glorious this movie will be.

I, Tonya

I think this will be fab even though I am not sure about Margot’s accent.

I love that the young version of her is the same actress who plays young Cookie on Empire.

12 Strong

Personally not a fan of movies like that.

The Heyday of Insensitive Bastards

The cast is quite good, but I just don’t know how I feel about the episodic nature of it. It can work, but it can also go really wrong and I don’t think the trailer is that stellar.

Amanda and Jack go Glamping

It’s the indie version of Wanderlust.

It Happened in LA

I have no idea what this is about.

Mobile Homes

It looks like they showed a lot of the movie, but I think it looks still very good … in an intense way.

I Love You, Daddy

This has really heavy Woody Allen undertones.

One Percent More Humid

For Pacino, I hope this will be at least decent.

Jim & Andy The Great Beyond

Documentary of the week.

TV Shows

The Punisher

I am so excited for this, I can’t even. Also, I see Frank with Karen and I am 100% there for it.

UnREAL (Season 3)

The End of the F***ing World

I seriously don’t know what to think about this.

What are you watching? What are you excited for? Let’s talk!

All Hallows Write Tag

I saw this post recently on Melissa @The Bookish Wanderer‘s blog and I absolutely loved the idea. So, although she didn’t tag me personally, she did insinuate that everyone who writes could do this. It’s been a while since I mentioned Arcadia, but (my cousin can attest to that) I am working on it. There’s some problem solving happening and I hope to share more soon. Anyway, I always love a little insight into the characters and this is the perfect chance. So, here’s the All Hallows Write Tag!

  • Provide a short description of your story!
There’s been so many posts about Arcadia already and I still haven’t gotten any better at describing it. Where to start? It’s about a couple having to find their way back to each other after some magical beings messed with their lives (aka kidnapped the boyfriend into another world). Getting tangled up in an ancient struggle for power, they have to be careful to not get sucked in too deep before it is too late.
I am working on that pitch. It’s not at all where I want it to be yet. You can check out the first 10+ chapters here if you are interested. They are a much better representation of the story.
  • Don’t use the same character for more than 3 answers!

It’s Halloween night! What is your protagonist dressed up as?

I feel like neither Kasia nor Dyson would wear something scary, but rather something geeky instead. Couples costumes are out of the question though, just because Kasia very much values her independence and is too chaotic to coordinate. So, in the end, I think Kasia would go as Lara Croft and Dyson as Milo from Atlantis, that way they’d both be adventurers at least, even if they were from different stories.

Who in your cast refuses to dress up and shows up at the Halloween party without a costume?

Alaya, for sure! I very much believe she’d think it’s just a stupid human tradition and she’d see absolutely no reason whatsoever to partake in that.

Which character wears the most outrageous costume, and what would it be?

When it comes to style, Georgie likes to change it up the most from the entire cast. Something tells me that she would not hesitate to go all out and have some elaborate period costume for Halloween. She would then proceed to make up an incredibly enchanting and outrageous backstory for her character, without that person ever having existed.

On Halloween, werewolves, vampires, and zombies are on the prowl. Which of your characters gets caught in their clutches, and which creature do they subsequently turn into?

Is it cheating if I say Kasia? Because, you know … the wolf thing … but in all seriousness, that girl is the most likely to get herself into some sort of trouble by accident.

Who wins the contest for best costume?

Again, Georgie! She is a mastermind when it comes to clothes/costumes/disguises/whatever you want to call it.

Who hands out toothbrushes to the trick and treaters?

Hmmm … I want to say that I can’t imagine anyone doing that, but then I thought maybe Findlay would. Not so much as a healthy precaution for the trick and treaters, but rather to get their house a bad reputation and keep unwanted guests from ringing the doorbell. That seems like something he would try to achieve, just because he hates unannounced guests.

Which two of your characters decide to pair up and do an angel/devil costume together?

Georgie might force Findlay to do that with her, but then she would make him the devil even though he is definitely the angel when it comes to the both of them. And again, Georgie would go totally over the top, whereas Findlay’s costume would be super slick and sharp lines, kind of like the Lucifer from the TV show.

Someone is too scared to even attend the Halloween party. Who is it?

Well, if it’s an actually scary party where they watch horror movies or go to a haunted house and prank each other with jump scares – count Kasia out! She does not like to be scared.

Who overdoses on Halloween candy and ends up sick?

As smart of a man as Dyson is, he has an incredible sweet tooth and will definitely go overboard if given the chance.

Which character is most likely to place a curse/hex on someone and who would they curse?

Oh man, when there are actual curses in your story and several cast members are affected … how do I answer this? *cough* Alaya *cough*

Whoever of my lovely writer friends wants to do this, you are hereby officially tagged! Have fun!

What did you think of this tag? For those who have read Arcadia so far, do you agree with my choices?

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Oct 9-15)

Can someone explain to me where all the time is going? I feel like I blinked and another week has passed. Anyway, that’s not what you are here for, you want to see the latest trailers and so you shall.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

My poor, poor heart nearly exploded by the end of the trailer. At least we have porgs and these ice fox thingies now?

Justice League

As of right now, my excitement levels for this aren’t very high, but I’ll likely watch it.

The Tribes of Palos Verdes

It looks like a good but sad drama.

Why are all the Anton Yelchin movies coming out now? They’re making me sad.

The New Mutants

You know that I stay away from horror as best as I can, cause I hate it. However, this has to do with mutants and therefore I had to check it out. This just looks too scary for me, though.

This just looks so dumb.

What is this? The non musical, less fun version of Baby Driver?

Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold

Documentary of the week

TV Shows

Stranger Things (Season 2)

Cannot wait for this to finally be released.

Castle Rock

I guess it truly is the renaissance of Stephen King adaptations and apparently they also like Bill Skarsgard in them.

Remember, remember the 5th of November …

She’s Gotta Have It

Pretty sure that will be a mood thing.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Meh, if it lasts longer than a season … maybe?

What are you going to watch? Let’s talk!

Kat’s (Definitely Not Definitive) Rules for Set Life

Life in Vancouver has been bliss. While I used to work in TV and film back home in Austria, set experiences here are a completely different matter. You can get so close to all the action and basically spend an entire day on set if you want to, I would have never expected that. People in Vancouver are so used to their city (and surrounding area) being occupied by film crews, most of them don’t even care to stop anymore unless it’s a scene for “Deadpool” (Seriously, the first question asked on any set is “Is this Deadpool?”). That means sets usually attract real fans or TV enthusiasts instead of random passersby and the crew does their best to accommodate these people while still trying to do their job. I think it’s only fair to not make their life any more difficult in the process, so here are some of my tiny tips and rules while visiting sets. *

*I am Jon Snow-ing this. I know nothing, I just pretend I do, so no guarantee on this working all the time.

RULE 1: Be Quiet

I was so used to just shutting my mouth mid-sentence whenever I heard someone scream “rolling” (pretty much what you’ll hear as soon as the cameras go on), that I didn’t even consider that some people might not know what that means. Technology is amazing these days and the microphones will pick up your voice for sure if you keep talking while they’re filming, even if you stand on the other side of the lot. I get that it’s exciting to be on set and to see your faves in action, you want to share that giddiness with the world, but there is nothing more uncomfortable than a crew member coming over to tell you that you just ruined a shot.

So, you don’t have to be mute the entire time. That would kind of defeat the purpose of the set visit, but just make sure you pay attention to when they are filming and when it would be more appropriate to be quiet.

RULE 2: Don’t Mess Up the Shot

This one goes kind of hand in hand with the previous one. Don’t just be aware of your sound volume, but also keep in mind the position of the camera. Most of the time PAs (Production Assistants, who you will recognise through their bright neon vests and solid attachment to their walkie talkies) will inform you if you are in the way, but you can make their life a lot easier if you just move on your own if you see they are changing the camera angle in your direction.

Also, even if you don’t feel like you are in the shot, move if the crew tells you to. This could have multiple reasons. For one, maybe you are wearing bright colors or fandom clothes and even if those were just in the periphery of the shot, they could be a real distraction. Second, and this isn’t the case very often but does happen from time to time, some actors/actresses prefer if the fans aren’t in their direct eye line while they are filming. As  pretentious as that sounds, imagine being deep into character and there are random people staring at you, sometimes even waving or maybe taking pictures from the other side of the street, it really ruins the mood. Speaking of cameras, this leads me directly to my next point.

RULE 3: Check What You’re Allowed to Photograph/Film

Most times it is perfectly okay to take pictures or film while you are on set, however, there can be certain restrictions to it. It may be due to the production not wanting certain details to leak (if certain characters survive/new costumes/special events or crossovers/etc.) before the release of the show/film or any other reason, but most of the time they prefer it if you don’t take pictures while they are rolling.

But don’t worry, essentially you’ll get plenty of chances to catch your faves during some fun behind the scenes moments and isn’t that better than the actual scene anyway? Now you just have to consider whether you really want to share those pictures on all your social media or not, because … spoilers?

RULE 4: Treat the Crew/Cast with Respect

Sometimes crew members will lie to you simply to get you out of the way. Sometimes actors/actresses had a rough day and don’t have the time to meet you. Don’t hold it against them. These people are only doing their job and believe it isn’t always an easy one. The hours are crazy, the concentration necessary is insane but they never actively try to work against the fans. They know that without them, they wouldn’t be able to work on their shows, but everyone has a bad day every now and then.

In my opinion this should be a no-brainer, but always treat the cast and crew with respect. There have been an increasing amount of incidences where fans were pulling and screaming at actors in an attempt to get a photo with them and it’s quite disturbing to be honest. Just because they lead a very public life, does in NO way whatsoever mean they are public property. I know that these people are a mere minority among the fans, but they are the loudest of them all and they overshadow all the others.

It is true that sometimes you have to be bold and go up to the person to chat with them and take a picture. No one will ever hold that against you and most people are really used to it (just don’t do it while they are eating. Seriously, don’t ever get between people and their food), but in most cases, the actors/actresses came up to the fans when they had the time. It means they don’t feel ambushed and may even be up for a little chat. To me, that’s the best case scenario.

In conclusion, I feel like most of these were pretty obvious ones, but apparently not to all people. Being on set can be exciting, but also super boring. Sometimes you just stand around for hours, not even really seeing what’s going on. It’s up to you to determine whether it’s worth it or not. I hope this post was a little helpful in case you want to try your luck one day. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask them in the comments below!

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Oct 2-8)

I know it’s been a bit quiet this week, but motivation is a bit low at the moment. It will come back eventually, don’t worry, but for now – here are your trailers!

Pacific Rim: Uprising

I am going to love this.

Paddington 2

I still haven’t seen the first one and I had friends who ran around in a bear costume to promote the film.

I saw Yelchin and now I am sad.

Wonder Wheel

I am not sure how Timberlake and Woody Allen fit together …

Where’s the Money?

This looks hilarious.

Roman J. Israel, Esq.

I am not sure what I think about it.

I am not sure this has a happy ending ….

The Bachelors

This is one of those rainy Sunday afternoon movies.

Crooked House

Interesting cast.

The Babysitter

This looks dumb.

Look, I am all for Keanu but this is creepy.

TV Shows

Marvel’s the Runaways

I really didn’t want to like this because I am overwhelmed with Marvel shows (didn’t like Inhumans btw, enjoyed The Gifted), but I really want to watch this.

Future Man

So weird, but I am not against it. It totally reminds me of Armada.

Shadowhunters (Season 3)

This has like zero to do with the books by now.

Beyond (Season 2)

I kind of still haven’t finished the first season.

Are you going to watch any of these? Let’s chat!

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Sept 25-Oct 1)

I just saw off my cousin to the airport and it’s strange to think that she’s been here for two weeks. It feels like two days max, but what can you do? Time waits for no one. So, as a distraction, here are some more trailers!

Maze Runner: The Death Cure

I honestly forgot that there was another movie.

The Truth About Lies

Topher from Dollhouse always has my attention.

Crash Pad

I am so going to like this.

Father Figures

Okay, I guess.

Pitch Perfect 3

Is this the final one now?

NEED. TO. SEE. THIS! I mean … from the director of Ex Machina? It’s going to be a ride!!

If I am in the right mood, I think I could enjoy this.

Acts of Vengeance

It’s just not my kind of movie

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

This is going to be majorly messed up, just like The Lobster. It’s decidedly too messed up for me. (I know, I have weird boundaries)

Bill Nye: Science Guy

Documentary of the week.

TV Shows

Our Girl (Season 3)

Once Upon a Time (Season 7)

Okay, the sit visits have worn me down. I am super excited by now, just because I need all the explanations.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (Season 3)

I can’t believe they are telling me that Jericho Beach is supposed to be Aruba …….. like no.

The Librarians (Season 4)

Arrow (Season 6)

It irks me so much that I never meet anyone on the Arrow sets.

I am guessing the show gets the Riverdale treatment, where episodes screen live on the CW and then get uploaded on Netflix. Smart.

That’s it for this week! What are you currently watching?
