November 2017 Wrap-Up

I am tired of writing “where is the time going? How is it almost the end of the year?” but that’s basically what’s happening in my brain. Anyway, you won’t believe it, but I’ve actually read stuff this month and with stuff I mean books and comics! YAY ME!

  • Saints and Misfits by S.K. Ali (4.5 stars)
  • Wynonna Earp, Vol. 2: Legends (4 stars)
The characters look like the ones from the show, but the story is mostly different. Very different.
  • Superman: American Alien (4.5 stars)
Did not love the art in every single issue, but the story was more than solid. It was a feast to see Clark coming into himself and Superman thereafter.
  • Spider-Man/Spider-Gwen: Sitting in a Tree (3 stars)
To me, this was a silly idea to begin with. (Miles and Kamala are my ship!)

Saints and Misfits  Wynonna Earp, Vol. 2: Legends  Superman: American Alien  Spider-Man/Spider-Gwen: Sitting in a Tree

I spent the first week(-ish) of the month in Toronto, having a couple really awesome blogger meet ups, but mostly being over my Canada stay. I still wanted to be in Vancouver, but I hated that inbetween of being in Toronto and still having so far to go to be in Vienna. Then I finally got back to Austria and it feels like I barely had time to breathe since. There were appointments with the unemployment office, my short yearly stunt as a crew member at our local comic con and telling the same stuff over and over to different family members/friends.

I do understand that everyone wants to know how I’ve been, but the worst question to get after a 6-month-long absence is “So, how was it? What’s coming next?”, because I literally have no idea how to answer either. I mean, what part of the trip are we talking about? I was in more than 4 different cities for a decent amount of time. I basically had a second life in Vancouver and even there I lived in various different neighborhoods. Also, there is no way that I am arriving in Vienna with a game plan for my future endeavors. That’s just not how my brain works. I need time to arrive first, get back into the time zone and then I will take one step at a time towards what’s to come. Seriously, cut me some slack.

So, this turned into a bit of a rant. But, basically, I am back? Hopefully also into the reading game.

Saints and Misfits by S.K. Ali (Book Review)

Publisher: Salaam Reads/Simon and Schuster
Page Count
: 336

First of all, I want give a huge shout out to Analee @Book Snacks because she hosted a giveaway which let me pick this fabulous book as my prize. Thank you so, so much! I rarely ever get lucky with giveaways, so this had me jumping up and down with glee when I found out. On to the actual book now! (TW: sexual assault!)

It’s no secret that I have been in a bit of a reading slump these past months, with things other than books occupying my mind. But even before that, I can’t remember the last time I stayed up until the early hours to keep reading like I did with Saints and Misfits. It’s not that this was such an action-packed story, quite the opposite, but it had me stressed out about 80% of the time. Janna’s story is one of a regular Muslim teen and super relatable at that even if you aren’t 100% familiar with her culture and religion. I truly loved that about the book. Aside from a dark twist early on, it’s very much grounded in her High School experience, struggle with finding her place in her community and family as well as figuring out how her belief fits into her daily and romantic life. Simultaneously, there’s this dark cloud following her every step in the shape of “the monster”. I don’t want to give away what exactly happens, but whereas the book gave me so many characters to love (Pick a favorite!?!? Janna, Nuah, Sarah, Tats – I CANNOT EVEN CHOSE!), it also gave me that one person to channel all my anger towards. I didn’t always agree with other people’s take on the events that happened, especially the ones calling Janna “weak”. I believe that most of us think that we would fight back immediately when something bad happens to us, but that is far from reality when the situation actually occurs. Her initial helplessness was contagious and I think that’s why I felt so connected to Janna all through the story. Add the side tale with Mr. Ram, with her emotions and thoughts very much mirroring my own after something that happened in my life and this book was sure to have me hooked forevermore.

I was sobbing during the last chapters. I was sad and touched and glad and angry. Any book that evokes so many emotions in me is one that I can only recommend to others as well. As much as I enjoyed the book, I couldn’t give it a full 5 stars, because of the pacing and the flow. Especially in the beginning, I thought that some of the story felt a little hacked up and not cohesive enough in terms of how it flowed. And then the end came very abruptly. I am a person who enjoys finding out about consequences as well and that wasn’t really given in the final pages. Still, I feel like this book will stay with me for a while and I am sure I will revisit these characters again and again in the future.

Fazit: 4.5/5 stars! I will cherish this one in my heart for a long time!

Have you read Saints and Misfits? Do you want to?

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Nov 20-26)

Wow, it feels like I am blinking and the week is just over. I haven’t done anything super exciting to be honest, kinda just reintroducing myself to Vienna still. It’s a process, but it is happening. Let’s move on to trailers!

Movies

Smallfoot

Nice twist on the story.

Peter Rabbit

I am getting more into this with every trailer.

A Wrinkle in Time

I preferred the other trailers, but I do want to watch this bad.

Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool

I adore Jamie Bell so freaking much!

The Mercy

I know Colin is aging, but whenever I see him, I feel like he is always the same age.

El Camino Christmas

Weirdly, I think I would enjoy this. Definitely not the typical Christmas movie.

TV Shows

The Magicians (Season 3)

I guess it’s time for me to catch up on Season 2.

Black Mirror (Season 4)

OMG, time to get super freaked out again.

A Discovery of Witches

Have not read this, will definitely watch it. (It’s hard to resist Matthew Goode)

Rise

They had me at “Hamilton”.

Deception

A crime solving magician? Sure … why not …

Hope you had a good week! What are you watching?

The Book Blogger Test

I am struggling a bit with my identity as a blogger, especially being called a book blogger. It was never ALL I did on here, but for a long time it was what I did most often – talk about books. That has become rare during my time abroad and I am now trying to figure out where I want to go from here seen as I am back in Vienna (and technically have more time to read again). So, I found the Book Blogger Test among my drafts, because Melissa @The Bookish Wanderer kindly tagged me for it. I very much doubt it will actually give you answers about whether you are a book blogger or not, but I thought it might get me back into the right spirit. So, here we go!

Rules:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you and add a link to their blog
  2. Answer the questions asked on this post
  3. Nominate at least five people to do it also
  4. Let your nominees know you nominated them

Describe Your Perfect Reading Spot!

My perfect reading nook would be right beside a window with a gorgeous view. There would be a gazillion pillows and blankets , preferably so comfortable that I could sleep there if I wanted to. I also need a little space to put tea cups or snacks besides the stacks of books without actually endangering their safety with spilled beverages and the likes. Basically, I would want to be able to live in that little nook. Kind of like the picture below, just way more cozy and with a lamp for when it gets late.

Tell Us 3 Book Confessions!

  1. I often prefer movie tie-ins to the original covers. (Not always, but like 90% of the time)
  2. I once made a friend buy me a new copy of a book I lent her, because she was reading it at a pool and her cousin poured a bucket of water over her … and the book. Her mum did not understand why I made a fuss about it.
  3. Most of the books I read for my Goodreads challenge this year were comics and graphic novels.

When Was the Last Time You Cried During a Book?

Pretty sure that was during Words in Deep Blue! I adore that book (so much so that I made an aesthetic for the Book Aesthetic Tag), but it is sadness.

How Many Books Are on Your Bedside Table?

If we are talking literally on my bedside table … then none! I stack my books elsewhere.

What’s Your Favorite Snack to Eat While You Are Reading?

Snacks can be SO messy, but I am addicted to peanut flips. They are my weakness. Other than that I usually just enjoy a cup of tea while reading, but not so much food.

Name 3 Books You Would Recommend to Everyone!

  1. Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin
  2. Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde
  3. All American Boys by Jason Reynolds/Brendan Kiely

Show Us a Picture of Your Favorite Bookcase on a Bookshelf!

Hmmm … I don’t know. I am quite happy with how my growing comic book section is shaping up to look like. I hope that counts. (Also, sorry for the meh quality of the picture. Lighting is terrible in my room.)

Describe How Much Books Mean to You in Just 3 Words!

Escape. Solace. Joy.

I Tag Thee

*Don’t feel obliged to do the tag if you don’t want to or already have done it! Also, everyone who is interested in doing the tag but wasn’t mentioned by me, feel free to do it anyway! Just link back here so I can see your answers!*

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Nov 13-19)

Sorry for my continued absence on the blog. I’ve been home for a week now and I’ve worked at the Vienna Comic Con once again in addition to that. My system is slowly getting back to this time zone and I’ve battled a case of the common cold. Let’s just say, with the unemployment office being on my case, the blog took a little bit of a backseat in all of this. But you are here for your weekly dose of trailers, so you shall get them.

Movies

Incredibles 2

Someone remind me how long we’ve been waiting for this? Forever? That’s right!

Hotel Transylvania 3

I am not sure I saw the others.

People You May Know

This is EXACTLY my kind of movie.

A Wrinkle in Time

It looks so darn good!

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Can I have Colin back instead of Depp? I would really, really appreciate that.

Deadpool 2

I can’t wait to watch this and be like “I WAS THERE FOR THAT SCENE!”

Rampage

I did not expect this movie to be about huge animals.

F the Prom

OMG, this is SUCH a teen movie.

The Girl Who Invented Kissing

That “It’s Okay” song always gets me.

A Bad Idea Gone Wrong

It really is the saddest heist in the history of heists.

The Greatest Showman

Circus? YAY! Music? Has yet to be decided.

A Christmas Prince

This is so not on brand for Liv Moore, but cheesy Christmas movies are so much fun.

The Party

Not sure the black and white was really necessary.

Bullet Head

Yeah, I doubt this is for me.

A Quiet Place

I HATE scary stuff SO much. I don’t like it, I don’t think I ever will. So, of course, the one time John and Emily do a movie together, it’s something I most likely can’t watch.

TV Shows

DCTV Crisis on Earth-X

This is basically the big crossover of the season. I’ve seen some of the filming and there’s a lot of fighting but also some exciting stuff with some ships happening. Just sayin’ …

Agents of SHIELD (Season 5)

I am hopelessly behind on this.

Frontier (Season 2)

Cannot really comment on this, since I haven’t seen the first season.

How are you doing? What are you watching? I just finished The Punisher and I need more Karen and Frank (this is me, focusing on all the wrong parts of a show).

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Nov 6-12)

It’s been pretty quiet around here and that’s because I was travelling back to Vienna and have been home for a couple days now. The jetlag isn’t too bad, but I still get incredibly tired during the day and super awake at night, which is unfortunate.

Movies

Game Night

This seems dumb, in a fun way?

Early Man

I always wonder how long it takes to make movies like that if they don’t animate but use real materials.

Peter Rabbit

Domhnall, don’t hurt them!

Sherlock Gnomes

Can’t believe there is a gnomes sequel…

The Post

Stellar cast, eh?

Forever My Girl

These country star movies are kinda sweet.

Hollow in the Land

Not sure this is my cup of tea.

Fifty Shades Freed

How did so many people watch this? How did they seriously get to make all the sequels? I just don’t understand.

Blame

Seems intense and scandalous enough for me.

Stratton

Seems pretty standard spy stuff.

The Shape of Water

I have shown trailers for this before, but I am still so excited to watch it.

Hostiles

In the spirit of last week, the western genre is having a revival.

TV Shows

The Crown (Season 2)

I think this is the last season with that actress as the queen before they get someone older to account for the time jumps.

Dark

Kinda like seeing German material on Netflix go online worldwide.

How are you doing? What are you watching? Who else is psyched for The Punisher coming this week?

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Oct 30-Nov 5)

I’ve been in Toronto this past week and I honestly cannot really tell you what I did so far? My routine has solidly been going to Starbucks or hanging out in the lobby of my hostel. I just kind of decided that this would be a relaxing time and that I didn’t HAVE to do anything touristy while I was here. Anyway, you are here for trailers, you here you go!

Movies

The Disaster Artist

I still remember when I first watched “The Room” and I was like “Who on earth thought this was a good idea?” but now I am so excited for this!!

Downsizing

This reveals WAY more than the first trailer! I guess they heard me complain that I didn’t see the conflict of the story the first time around.

I, Tonya

So crazy!

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (International Trailer)

No words.

Pottersville

The music is so chirpy.

The Strange Ones

Alex Pettyfer trying to revive his career.

Permanent

This is not the 80s style stuff I am into, but it might still be cute.

Dismissed

So, Cole Sprouse is doing Riverdale and Dylan … is doing this?

TV Shows

Grown-ish

It’s a spin-off for Black-ish

Ill Behaviour

Why is everything SO weird these days?

McMafia

I love whoever commented that they thought this was about burger crimes on YouTube.

Not that much new stuff this week. How are you doing? What are you watching?

October 2017 Wrap-Up

The last day of October has come and gone. My last day in Vancouver has come and gone. I feel like I just arrived here a week ago and now all I have left is one week in Toronto. Life is strange sometimes. For the first time in a long time, I actually managed to read something last month AND wrote a review. I know, it was a shock to me as well.

I Hate Everyone But You

Click on the title for the review and on the cover to get re-directed to Goodreads!

I don’t think my brain has fully realised that it’s not in Vancouver anymore or the fact that it won’t be there again for a considerable amount of time. Anyway, coming back to Toronto was nice. (I literally ran into a set upon arriving downtown … It didn’t even take me 5 minutes) It felt familiar and a little like home in a way too. I know my way around and I know how things work, that is just always so much less stress than in an entirely new place. I doubt I will do very much, this is more of a time to rest and get my wits together before returning back to Vienna.

Before leaving Vancouver, I tried to cram in as many sets as possible and I managed to do that quite alright. I think I’ve seen everyone from the Arrowverse at least a couple times now. I also feel like I ran into more people on the streets, which is super strange. What do you say? What do you do? If you are me, probably nothing because you are too shy/embarrassed/frozen in place. However, I did manage to meet Rahul Kohli and Rob Raco and take pictures with them. Yay!

My friend and I also got to attend a Riverdale event in Vancouver, where they gave out free Betty and Veronica (vanilla and chocolate) milkshakes to fans. Marisol was there, she plays Veronica’s mum, and we got the chance to dress up in Riverdale attire. It was a lot of waiting around, but since we were pretty much among the first 50 people to get in, it also a lot of fun.

Lastly, I just want to express my deep, deep love for Stranger Things! My entire camera roll is currently pictures of Steve, Hopper or the kids. I can’t even tell who I like best, because I like them all so much. Who would have thought that I would be the one to fall for a scary show?
