January 2018 Wrap-Up

I am glad to announce that I have successfully adapted to writing 2018 instead of 2017. I didn’t even need a second attempt when I wrote this post! Anyway, just as I suspected, my hunger for books has slowly returned now that I have been back in Vienna for a while. I find myself reading at a very different pace now though. Whenever I pick up a book, I now tend to read it in 1-2 days and then take a break for a couple days/an entire week. It’s strange but it seems to work. So, here’s what I got around to read this month:

  • Devils & Thieves by Jennifer Rush (3 stars)
  • America, Vol. 1 (4 stars)
I really enjoyed America as a character. The cameos were awesome and I think it was only the last issue that I didn’t like as much. It had a bit of a different art style than the previous ones.
  • The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (5 stars)
THIS BOOK DESERVES ALL THE HYPE! It’s so good and important and I cannot even wait for it to come out as a movie and then attract even MORE people. I just know that the casting is beyond perfect already.
  • Lock & Mori: Final Fall by Heather W. Petty (4 stars)
This is the final part in the Lock & Mori series and I love those books so much. They may not be perfect, but they are such a nice distraction and have such an amazing villain origin story. While it perfectly explains how Mori became the person she is, it doesn’t try to justify her actions or give her a redemption arc. It just lets Mori be Mori.
  • The Epic Crush of Genie Lo by F.C. Yee (4 stars)
  • Iron Gold by Pierce Brown (5 stars)
  • Die Wunderübung by Daniel Glattauer (3 stars)
What a surprise! I read very few books in my mother tongue, because I just like most things better in English. However, this is a book from one of my favourite Austrian authors and I actually got to meet him and some of the actors of the movie adaptation of this story at a book signing on Tuesday. It was a lot of fun and I was like the second person in line.

Devils & Thieves (Devils & Thieves, #1)  America, Vol. 1: The Life and Times of America Chavez  The Hate U Give  Final Fall (Lock & Mori, #3)  The Epic Crush of Genie Lo (The Epic Crush of Genie Lo #1)  Iron Gold (Red Rising Saga #4)  Die Wunderübung

Just like in old times, click on the title to get to the review on the blog (if there is one) and on the cover to get re-directed to Goodreads!

Ugh … January was such a long month! Where 2017 went by in one big woosh, I feel like 2018 is taking its sweet time. I had some really annoying stuff to deal with in January and my body is making me feel it hard by aching in all kinds of places. I unfortunately also can’t say that I am going to start working soon, because so far it’s mostly been rejection emails or silence. That all sounds like doom and gloom, but mostly I am just tired.

The stored up energy I am currently unable to put into my career, I have now focused back onto the blog with an increased number of posts as well as new chapters for Arcadia. I have missed writing a lot and I left my characters in such a precarious place, I am glad I got continue their story a bit. In a lot of ways I have to thank Marie for that because 1. she is one of my biggest fans and wants to know how it continues and 2. she is currently rereading and working on her own WIP and we have sessions where we work at the same time on our respective projects and it’s such a motivation. If you want to check out Arcadia, you can do so here. I am definitely going to post more in the upcoming weeks, because I am finally really motivated again!

One thing I am really happy about is the fact that #CurrentlyWatching is BACK! When I look at my stats, the bookish posts still work best on the blog, but talking about TV shows is such a passion of mine. If anyone ever needs a professional TV show recommender (is that a thing? I am making it a thing!), then I am your gal!

How was your January? Did you read a lot? Did you watch some good TV shows?

  1. January definitely took it’s time – on one hand as usual I can’t believe it’s February already, but on the other??? It doesn’t feel like it’s only been 31 days haha. Maybe there’s a conspiracy going on and it was actually longer than that 😛 Glad to hear you’re reading more again and yay for writing more! I hope you’ll be able to get a job soon ❤️

  2. Great recap, it seems like you had a great January Kat. You got through some great books that’s for sure and I’m so glad you enjoyed The Hate U Give and Iron Gold. The Hate U Give is definitely a book that deserves all the hype it’s received and more, it’s an incredible story and one that’s so important as well. 🙂
I’ll keep my fingers crossed you have some luck in your job search, and I think it’s great you’ve put more energy into your blog and writing (I definitely need to do the same for my writing because I’m a little behind in where I need to be drafting and planning wise.)
Great post, and I hope you have a brilliant February as well! 😀 ❤

  5. I didn’t read as much as I wanted to this month! I totally understand your current reading pace, I’m similar in the sense that when I pick up a book I devour it in 2-3 days, but afterwards I take like a week or two before getting into another.

I’ve been watching “Stranger Things” recently because of all the hype and it really is just that good. I’m in season 2 right now.

I’d love to buddy up and write with you too, I could use a little extra motivation to write DW#2!

    • I feel weirdly comfortable with my current reading habits. That way, my parents can’t claim I am reading ALL the time, because it’s just accumulated in a short period of days haha
Stranger Things is awesome! I love that show to bits.
Marie and I mostly write on Saturday evenings (our time), but if you just want to do a couple writing sessions with me, I am sure we can organise something via messenger. It’s nothing too fancy, just writing sprints basically haha, but it works!

      • Lol, I would like to mirror your reading habits. I feel like we have similar motivations for doing the bulk of our reading in a short period of days. For you it’s your parents. For me it’s my kids. As it is they say all I do is read or write. 🙄 Lol. Which is funny bc how else do they get the school, have their lunches packed, and all the other manner of things they need me for 😂😂😂 that’s Parenting for you, a thankless job indeed 😜

I’d love to either join you and Marie or figure out a time to sprint together!

  6. I am so happy to hear you found your reading mojo again, so what if you need a bit of a break in between two reads, as long as that works out well for you, that’s GREAT. I’m so happy you read THUG, it was such a fantastic and important book ❤
I'm hoping that February will go by a bit faster that last month, haha and hopefully with less tiredness for you and more positive answers coming to you. I'll keep my fingers crossed! AND YOU ARE SO SWEET, of course I'll always be your number 1 fan when it comes to Arcadia or anything else you ever want to write. These writing / reading sessions are really helping me, too! 😀

  7. My January was at times very stressful, but on the whole it’s gone very well for me. I got a lot done this month at work, and on the writing front, with another edit for Rose and a new short story. My blog’s also grown, and my views are up lately, which I hope is a sign of things to come. And I got to see my first real Broadway show in Phantom of the Opera, which was just simply amazing.
I honestly hope 2018 takes its time. While 2017 was a good year for me, it went by really fast, and I want to enjoy this year to the utmost. Especially since I have a good feeling about 2018 as a whole. Fingers crossed, whatever happens.

    • I don’t want 2018 to go by with the blink of an eye either, but it better not drag on forever. My mum’s friend is into auras, numerology and energetics. She always said to us that 2017 would be shit (and I know on a personal level that may not be true, but on a gobal level it was very much shit) and she said that 2018 would be better, but only after like March. That’s how I am feeling about that year so far too.

  8. I feel you on writing the date right haha:)) Also!! I have The Hate U Give in my shelf and it’s sitting there just!!! staring at me i SO need to get to reading it as soon as possible waaah!! Thanks for writing this post, it’s really lovely! 💛

  9. I still haven’t read The Hate U Give and I’m so ashamed! I have to change it soon, probably this month, because everybody loves this book and it sounds absolutely perfect. Also, you read Call Me By Your Name, another book I’ve been very curious about. Have you also watched the movie??

    • Oh yes, I saw on Twitter that you were looking for a buddy reader, right? Did you find someone? I really enjoyed reading The Hate U Give, I don’t think there’s anyone who didn’t thus far haha
Call Me By Your Name was my favourite book of 2017 without any hesitation or doubt. I wanted to read the book before watching the movie, but then never got around to actually watch it haha from the scenes that I saw, it looks perfect. They changed a few things and it’s definitely better to have read the book beforehand from what I’ve read in reviews though.

  10. YES THE HATE U GIVE IS SO AMAZINGGGGG!! I’m so pumped for the movie ahah. January definitely took longer to get through, though February seems to be going by so fast for me so far?? It’s only felt like it’s been a couple of days when it’s almost halfway through. :O
I’m sorry to hear about your work status! I hope you find something soon! ❤ I'm glad you have increased motivation though ahh, and got more into reading, even if it's at an inconsistent pace. Whatever works! I hope your February has been going well so far!
