So, last week I talked about some of my favourite ships (you can check out that post here), but peoples, sometimes ships also gloriously fail. That’s why I am here today to do the Romance Fails in Fiction Tag, which the Orang-utan Librarian tagged me for. It’s going to be fun! (Hopefully …)
THE RULES
- Please PINGBACK to Kate @ Melting Pots and Other Calamities.
- You can choose ten romance fails from ANY media you like: books, movies, anime, manga, T.V shows, or Webtoons. You can even mix them up if you want.
- You can choose funny fails or serious ones; for the serious ones, phrase it humorously. Remember, this is a fun tag! It’s not meant to be serious.
- Mention who’s who in the fails. (I.E, who fails and who is the recipient of the failure). If there isn’t recipient, per se, just state the couple (or non-couple).
- Optional: Rank the failures from least extreme to most extreme.
- 5 failures at LEAST.
- Tag as many people as you want, but at least one person.
THE SHIPWRECKS
Mindy/Ben (The Mindy Project)
I don’t know who finished the Mindy Project, but the whole Mindy-Ben-marriage was a vast disappointment for me. What was the point of the whole thing? Thinking about it, they managed to butcher every good option for Mindy out there, when in reality Mindy needs no man. Anyway, they turned Casey into a douche, they really messed up Danny and then they just handed Ben to her. Ben is the uber-nice guy – Mr. Perfect … just not for Mindy? There was no chemistry there and I know Mindy needed to get over the notion of marriage being her end goal, but still … ugh …
Katniss/Gale (The Hunger Games)
We’ve gone through this like a 13823948 times. They were flirty friends, but they were never supposed to be a thing. Heck, at this point I am not even sure Katniss is supposed to be with Peeta. Can someone let that girl just have platonic love?
Lizzie/Thomas Shelby (Peaky Blinders)
Okay … sooo … I love Lizzie. In her own way, she is family but sometimes the show really missed crucial parts of her history? I still don’t know when she went from sleeping with Tommy, to loving John and then back to really loving Tommy and basically being the unofficial Ms. Thomas Shelby without probably ever being it for real. I am afraid this will only make sense to people who watched the show.
Liam/Kathryn (The Royals)
It was like a car crash happening right in front of my eyes. I know The Royals thrives on drama, but that whole storyline (plus the fight for the throne) really ruined Liam for me?
Klaus/Camille (The Originals)
The moment Cami appeared on screen, I thought she looked and felt like a carbon copy of Caroline and I stand by that opinion to this day (they don’t just look alike, they also have similar names). That made it impossible for me to ever truly see her as a real option for Klaus. Also, everyone treated her like a saint when she really wasn’t one. I am not heartless, her exiting the show was sad, but not because I cared for her character, but because of what that meant to Klaus.
Clara/Danny Pink (Doctor Who)
Look, I thought they were cute in the beginning, but that was when I still believed he could be the new Rory. However, Danny Pink was never going to be a longterm installment of Clara’s life. He didn’t accept her for who she was and all he left her with was a lot of plot holes (*cough* Orson Pink *cough*).
I TAG THEE
- Andrea @Andrea’s Nirvana
- Camillea @Camillea Reads
- Kate @Reading Through Infinity
- Lois @My Midnight Musings
- WHOEVER WANTS TO DO THIS TAG!!
So, I couldn’t come up with 10 picks, but what do you think? What are some romances that have failed hard?
Thanks for the tag! I’ll see if I can compile more than 5, oh my! I totally agree on the Clara/Danny one, might even add it in my own post!

You’re welcome! It was a lot harder to come up with pairings for this than I thought, so definitely feel free to take whoever you want from my list haha

Hmm… Nothing specifically comes to my mind for this one, actually! I don’t normally go ‘Oh I HATE this relationship’ when I’m reading, it just won’t really stick with me, or I’ll put the book down. So oops I can’t think of any haha.

It was actually REALLY hard to think of relationships for this tag. I was just sitting there “I only remember the ones I liiiiike”

You won’t believe on how hard it was to actually think of them! I am pretty sure I suppressed the memory of some of those haha

I so agree with Klaus and Camille! I did not ship them whatsoever!

THANK YOU! I hated that pairing so much .. just whyyy? I still have my fingers crossed for a Klaroline reunion in the final season. At least I heard rumours …

I’ve only seen a few of these shows, but I completely agree with you about Gale and Katniss. I was never really a fan of the whole love triangle in that series and honestly I don’t think that book needed a romance. I agree with you let the girl have some platonic love instead of romantic! 🙂
Also I used to watch Doctor Who but haven’t seen it in ages. I didn’t see the whole Danny/Clara relationship play out but for me no one can beat Amy and Rory (no one can even come close in my opinion!)
Great post, and great picks as well. 😀 ❤

Right!?!? Gale and Katniss was just dreadful and they made it an even bigger thing for the movies and I was just like “nope”. Team Gale was never a thing and will never be a thing, whether you cast Liam Hemsworth or not, I don’t care.
I have to say that Clara is my absolute favourite companion. I started watching with Amy (have seen all of the reboot though) so her and Rory will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart, just like Eleven. However, Clara is the closest to me in terms of personality I think, so I just adored her … and I wanted to raid her closet.

Yeah that was one thing I really didn’t enjoy about the movies (they stuck close-ish to the books for most aspects, why did they choose to make that a difference between the two?!)
I haven’t seen all of Clara’s episodes so I can’t say for sure, but at the moment it’s got to be Amy and Rory for the win for me. Both in terms of favourite companions and favourite Doctor Who OTPs. 🙂

Totally fair enough! Amy and Rory are pretty amazing, so I will always relate 🙂

Haha I have no idea who these couples are (minus Gale and Katniss, which I completely agree with you on) but I’m feeling your passion. XD Fun post!

Ooh really cool answers! Yeah personally I find a lot of the romance in the Hunger Games all over the place. Oh I really agree about Klaus/Camille (though I never got that far into the show)- honestly if they wanted to make Klaus move on from Caroline they should have done it in a more organic way, not just shoehorn in a carbon copy of Caroline. Why couldn’t they have just made Klaroline happen!?

I will never get over the injustice of Klaroline not being a full fledged thing during either one of the series actual run. They hooked up, he keeps sending her cutesy notes, his daughter goes to her freaking school .. I am so glad there are rumours that Caroline will be in the final season of the Originals this year, but I still think they didn’t treat that pairing the way they should have. Her and Stefan was just as weird as her and Alaric. I would have liked to see Care and Enzo, but he got paired off with Bonnie … nevermind, I am rambling. They might still make Klaroline happen, but it would be more of an afterthought than an actual thing.

Ah I totally agree!! Oh gosh yeah the whole Caroline/Stephan thing? Just didn’t feel right either (I think I must have missed the Alaric thing- eww) Honestly, I stopped watching a long time ago, so am all over the place- but Bonnie and Enzo?!? Really?!??

Alaric was actually in love with her but she had the feels for Stefan. But … I mean, she did carry out the pregnancy of his dead wife and ultimately became the mother to his children. That messes with your head, I suppose? It’s still weird. He was her teacher and that’s just the smallest of my concerns haha
Bonnie and Enzo were HUGE in the final season, but you know the show. Bonnie gets screwed over every. single. time. He really did love her though.

Oh there are just so many things that you are saying that are just blowing my mind- I can’t even- she carried out the pregnancy of his dead wife and became a mother to his children?! And yeah- he was like a father figure in the show as well (aside from being her former teacher)- it just feels weird. hehe well I actually found Enzo an intriguing character- I just got bored of Bonnie’s whole “I’m dead- I’m not dead- I brought someone back from the dead!” routine- that kind of drove me nuts and (not that this makes a ton of sense) made me lose interest in her character (and it was a huge reason I stopped watching)

Honestly, everyone worships Bonnie, but I was never a fan of her. She always felt so righteous over everyone and if they couldn’t find any other way to do it, Bonnie would just risk it all and do something magic related to save the day. In the end (only working with TVD characters here), I would have wanted Caroline with Enzo, because yes, he was totally intriguing and he was crushing on her in the beginning and always flirting and then it just stopped. And I wanted Bonnie with Damon as a sort of enemies to lovers kind of journey. They did become BEST friends in the end. I mean, who would have thought that possible in the earlier seasons. I did not care for Elena and Stefan … maybe he should have just been with Elena? Or totally wild theory … alone?
But about the Alaric thing. Yeah, Caroline is now proud mama of magic twins. She would die for those girls and that’s why her and Alaric opened a school together for magic kiddos. It’s kinda like Professor X’s school for gifted children.

AHH THANK YOU!!! I never Bonnie either (but honestly, everyone is always such a fan, I’m always a little bit scared to admit it- except to my sister, who was also not a fan). Like you said, she was just always so self-righteous- and yet she often did things with magic she probably shouldn’t have. And yes she was used as a plot device for *magic saves the day* whenever it became expedient- which is why when she “permanently” died, I wasn’t sorry- I was just hoping that death on the show would mean something again. And yeah, that would’ve made *a lot* more sense to me. Bonnie/Damon though- I could’ve shipped that! Yeah I was not into Elena and Stefan as characters either- they weren’t the most interesting. Whhat?! Oh it’s nice, but also a little bonkers lol! I did not see any of that coming! What a twist!

I am always so scared to admit the Bonnie thing too, but I figured the way our conversation was going, it would be an alright thing to say haha
Yeah, she didn’t permanently die. I don’t know how far you watched, but since Nina didn’t want to be on the show anymore, the put her in a coma and made the condition to wake her up the death of Bonnie. Since Bonnie was now Damon’s best friend, he was in eternal agony. His love or his bestie?? In the end Nina came back for the final episode. There was one permanent death and that was Stefan. Nina and Damon were human and lived a long and happy life. Care and Alaric did the school with a generous donation from Klaus. Enzo died too and Bonnie travelled the world? Something like that. I full on spoiled it all for you, but at this point, I hope you don’t care hahaha

hahaha yes!
Oh yeah I didn’t get to that bit, but I looked up spoilers and just… it seemed so ridiculous. To be fair, even though I didn’t like Bonnie- I think he should have picked Damon 😉 That is just so… crazy- I’m not even gonna ask how they ended up human. I have to say, not sorry Stefan didn’t make it. Wait… what? Enzo died? Ugh. And not Bonnie?? Double ugh. hahahaha I really don’t- that show drove me mad for years and I used to complain to friends about it non-stop. I eventually decided to stop driving them (and myself) mad and quit 😉 I’ve thought I might go back to Originals, but probably not.

Originals is just sooo inconsistent. They always have amazing season finales but the middle is just dreadful. I don’t know why I keep watching, but the next season is the last one anyway. I am mad, becasue despite is supposedly being about family, they are always apart. Currently there is a curse on them, where the family is not allowed to be together or an evil spirit will take over Klaus’ daughter or something. So they all just went into different directions and Elijah got his brain wiped, because he would put family first always and that way he isn’t tempted or something?

Oh yeah I so agree with you. I did always like the final episodes- but everything in between always ended up being such a mess. I also did personally prefer a lot of the characters in that one as well though. But yeah- they did mess about with the family theme a bit too much. hehehe that’s also a weird plotline- especially since Elijah knowing about the curse would make him less likely to unintentionally run into them, because he wouldn’t want that to happen. So weird!

But someone could use that against them and put someone in danger and he’d feel obliged to rescue them or whatever. I honestly forgot the reasoning a bit hahaha

hahaha sounds like typical TVD/originals reasoning to be honest 😉 😂😂 Half logical… half really, really not!

I treated my mam to the Peaky Blinders box set so I’ll keep my eye on the Lizzie/Thomas development. I am still so annoyed with the Katniss/Gale thing. They had ZERO reasons to make it more than a friendship and was just pointless tension.

Katniss and Gale will forever annoy me.

Agreed on most of these (the others I don’t know 😂)! I don’t understand Gale and Katniss as a couple, they could have never fit, in my opinion. And thinking back on the series, I really enjoyed her ending up with Peeta because they both suffered a great deal and they deserved a happy ending, but Katniss ending up on her own would have been just as logical or even more!
Great post, seems kind of difficult to think about all those couples. 🙈

Hahaha that’s okay! Apparently I have a very particular and not mainstream-whatsoever taste in ships and shipwrecks.
I remember loving Peeta with all my heart in the books and I wanted them both to be happy, together most likely, but as I am getting older, I am just not sure why a relationship HAD to be the outcome, you know?
It was SO hard to think of couples!!!! You have no idea!

What do you think about Finn/Rose romance in the new Star Wars? This is one that I’ve been upset about since I watched the movie a few months ago. It felt so forced, so stale. Also I definitly agree with your Katniss/Gale relationship, it was almost painful to watch, although in the book I felt like there was romance. I didn’t see any on screen.

Ah, good question! I honestly wasn’t feeling the romantic vibes for Finn and Rose either. I thought they had a really great friendship though.
