Mini Reviews: Comic Book Edition

Since the mini reviews were quite well received last month and I didn’t have the best of reading months in July, I just wanted to do a short round up of all the comic books I read. I hope you like reading those too!

Deadly Class, Vol. 1+2

Deadly Class, Vol. 1: Reagan YouthDeadly Class, Vol. 2: Kids of the Black HoleI wanted to check out Deadly Class so bad before the show starts airing (check out the trailer here) and I got very lucky when a friend of mine decided to unhaul some of his comic books and I got them really cheap. I’ve heard so many people raving about this one, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I can definitely see the appeal in terms of the storytelling and dialogue, because it’s more than kids just beating each other up. It’s about depression, anxiety, moral ambiguity, tough circumstances and even tougher choices and all of it in a high stakes setting.

“This isn’t a dress rehearsal Marcus, you only get the one turn. Life is a series of unique opportunities. It’s our job to find the happiness in each one.”

Still, as I read on, I just found that the art style and the violence weren’t for me in this type of format. I think I can still see myself enjoying the show a lot, but as soon as I realised I was skipping panels because I really didn’t want to read or see what was happening, I gathered I probably won’t be continuing with the comics, even though I would like to know what will happen in the overall story.

Fazit Vol. 1: 4/5 stars! It was a wild trip!

Fazit Vol. 2: 3/5 stars! This kind of proved to me that I probably won’t be reading this on the long run.

Faith, Vol. 1

Faith, Volume 1: Hollywood & VineI gravitated towards this story because they want to adapt Faith for the big screen and I really wanted to check out what her character was all about. I can’t say that Valiant comics are what I usually strive for, so I kind of missed Faith’s origin story (which was in a previous series and not in this one) but I didn’t feel too disoriented.

As a character, I really loved Faith! It’s not often that you get to see a plus-size female superhero and such a funny, geeky and badass one at that. (The pop culture references were on point!) She charms you even when the story is only meh and you want to know more about her regular life, romantic entanglements and alliances.

On a side note, I am also very curious about the casting should they go forward with the movie! I can’t think of anyone from the top of my mind, which is sad if you think about it.

Fazit: 4.5/5 stars! I can see myself really following this character for a while.

Magritte: Ceci n’est pas une biographie

Magritte: This is Not a BiographyI don’t know if any of you know this about me, but René Magritte is one of my all time favourite artists. It’s not even all his paintings or themes, but he was one of the first artists I really discovered for myself and quickly learned to distinguish in exhibitions (Seriously, I can spot a Magritte a mile away). I don’t remember why, but we learned a lot about him when I was around the age of 10 and his life story just sort of stuck with me. I won this book and to get a whole graphic novel that’s basically a homage to his life, art and shortcomings as well as accomplishments was really great.

It’s a weird story for sure, but so was Magritte’s art. I liked that they kept the surrealist approach while making it their own and also educating people on parts of his life some might not have known about. It was really fun and with a certain unexpected ending.

Fazit: 4/5 stars! Such a nice short homage to Magritte!

That’s it for today! Have you read any of these or do you have thoughts on them? Let’s chat in the comments below!

Save the Date by Morgan Matson (Book Review)

Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children Books
Page Count
: 417

I can’t believe this is the first book review this month, but at least it is a good one! I read Save the Date as part of a buddy read with Marie @Drizzle and Hurricane Books. We always have a great time reading books together and it was no different time time around. Keep an eye out for a review on her blog as well!

There is something about Morgan Matson books that just always works for me. She somehow manages to give her books a similar, summery vibe with adorable and relatable characters, while also giving each story its own spin and different focus. This time she added little comic strips between the main parts of the book and they didn’t just add a really fun element, but also are way more crucial to the plot than you might think. Despite the setting of a wedding, I was very happy to see that Save the Date was barely about romance but far more about family. I will never get tired of reading about messy sibling-dynamics, inside jokes and complicated family relationships. Add a dog to that (and Morgan Matson did) and you’ve captured my heart as a reader.

Charlie is the youngest of the bunch and I feel it shows in some of her reactions, while she was simultaneously mature and great at helping out whenever things went south during the wedding. I am not sure I would have stayed as cool as her or found a solution as quickly. Hands down, that family would have been screwed without her and Bill intervening at every bad turn. While I didn’t always agree with her behaviour, I could relate to her a lot. She adores her family and thinks that they have something special, which I think is great. Nobody is perfect and maybe she had a bit of a hard time seeing that when it came to her family, but she still loves them and cherishes their bond. I know that families can be complicated and tricky, but I really loved reading about a family that makes it work despite the struggles.

The only reason I am not giving this a full 5 stars is that I felt like a couple conflicts were resolved too easily. The fighting parties made good points, at least some of them, and it was barely addressed afterwards. I know that sibling fights can be blown out of proportion when they happen and then everyone just acts like nothing happened afterwards, but this was something that had gone on for longer and I felt like it deserved more time.

Overall Save the Date was a really fun read! It never had a dull moment, even if I could predict a lot of the developments. I liked this family and wouldn’t mind hearing more about them in future books, just like there were a couple references to The Unexpected Everything here. There are few things I love more than seemingly unconnected books being connected.

Fazit: 4/5 stars! Morgan Matson just proved once more that she doesn’t disappoint.

What did you think of my review? Have you read the book? Do you want to? Also, I haven’t read much this month, but I did read a couple comics, how would you feel about a mini-review post for them? Any interest in that?

The Anonymous Bookaholics

A while back (and I really meant that, we are talking more than a year here), Fadwa @Word Wonders tagged me for the Anonymous Bookaholics. I know I need to post reviews or something else again, but life has been busy, so I am just trying to deliver some content here and this one looked like relatable fun!

What do you like about buying new books?

I just generally like adding to my library. I like the smell of books and I like being in a certain mood and finding that one book that compliments the mood perfectly! It’s just nice to then have them all on my shelves and look at them with fond memories.

How often do you buy new books?

I try to buy a couple books at once and not too many times. I can’t say any sort of number though. Am I supposed to know?? I thought we were all pretending to be oblivious to our extreme book buying habits …

Bookstore or online book shopping – Which do you prefer?

I love browsing bookstores, but a sad reality is that the stores here don’t have very big English-language sections and if they do, there’s not always the edition I want available should the book be there at all. So, simply out of practicality, I prefer online book shopping.

Do you have a favorite bookshop?

There’s this one chain bookshop with a decent English section in Vienna that’s also open on Sundays (shops are traditionally closed on Sundays in my country) and I like that one a lot. It also has like a coffee drinking area and is one of the few shops that does author events.

Do you pre-order books?

Sometimes. I know it helps authors and I like to support them, but even if I pre-order a book, it won’t actually be here on release day. That just means I rarely feel the need to pre-order because it doesn’t speed up the process of me getting the book. With some books I’ve found them in bookstores earlier than I got them via mail, which then just made me sad.

Do you have a monthly book buying limit?

I try to set a certain budget, but it varies all the time because I don’t order books every month and then I feel like I am allowed to splurge a little and so on. I mean, I do love books and I like having a selection to choose from at home.

Book buying bans – Are they something for you?

They actually work quite well for me. I set a book buying ban for myself until I have diminished my physical TBR a little and even though I caved eventually, I did make it through a couple months before that happened, which I would consider a success.

How big is your wishlist?

I don’t know?? Take a look yourself here.

Which three books from your wishlist do you wish to own NOW?

Marriage Vacation – This book was featured as a major plot point in one of my all time favourite TV shows “Younger”, so I need to read it! Page 58 everyone!!!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo – EVERYONE talks about it and loves it! I want to experience that too!!

Tyler Johnson Was Here – I’ve wanted this books since I first set eyes on it and I feel bad for not having read it yet.

I TAG THEE

I am keeping with my recent tradition of tagging WHOEVER WANTS TO DO THE TAG! I am so bad at keeping up with tags myself and I don’t want anyone to feel obliged, so if this looks like fun and you want to do it, consider yourself hereby tagged!

Can you relate to my book buying habits and feelings? Does my wishlist correlate with yours in any way? Let’s talk!

The Literary Dinner Party Tag

I saw the Literary Dinner Party Tag over at Kristin @Kristin Kraves Books blog and she sort of invited everyone who was curious to do this tag. So, that’s how we got here! I am excited to see who I am going to invite!

1. One character who can cook/likes to cook

The first person that came to mind for this one is Hassan from The Hundred-Foot Journey. He can do all sorts of things, from traditional Indian food to haute cuisine. I mean, the guy literally was responsible for several Michelin stars, so I’d be honored to have him cook for this little dinner party.

2. One character who has money to fund the party

I actually had a hard time coming up with a book character who had a lot of money. Either they weren’t very memorable or there really aren’t a lot? No matter what the real reason is, in the end I went with Gansey from the Raven Cycle. I can see him financing a friend’s indulgences and maybe it would be fun for him too? I’d hope so!

3. One character who might cause a scene

Margo Roth Spiegelman from Paper Towns! Can you see it? Because I sure can! I am not even sure if she wants to cause a scene or if she just thinks it’s expected of her and therefore she should do it.

4. One character who is funny/amusing

This might not be the most obvious choice, but I want to invite Lara Jean from To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before as the guest for this particular category. I don’t think she’s intentionally funny, like she’s not going to do her own stand up special on Netflix, but she is circumstantially funny? Hope that makes sense.

5. One character who is super social/popular

Uuuuh, I want Charlie from Queens of Geek to come! She’s a famous YouTuber so she could vlog about this epic event and then it would be on the interwebs forevermore afterwards.

6. One villain

I am going to invite Maven from Red Queen, because I love that damaged boy. Also, I decided he NEEDS to be portrayed by Freddy Carter if there is to be a movie or show and that means I get a Freddy Carter lookalike as my dinner guest and yeah … I am here for that.

7. One couple – doesn’t have to be romantic

I know it doesn’t have to be a romantic couple, but I’d really like to invite Juliet and Dawsey from The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I feel like they’d be delightful company. She’s a writer, he’s a pig farmer – those are different worlds entirely. There’s loads to talk about and the way they met makes for an especially great story.

8. One hero/heroine

One of my favourite comic book heroines is Kamala Khan from Ms Marvel. I truly hope she will join the MCU soon, because her stories are great and her character is even more amazing.

9. One underappreciated character

I feel like you all keep sleeping on my cupcake August Flynn from This Savage Song. His story just kind of resonated with me and he will forever have a special place in my heart. I’ve had dreams where he was my adopted son, I love him that much!

10. One character of your own choosing

This dinner party would in no way be complete without my bookish husband Max Vandenburg from the Book Thief. He is kind and generous and a great conversationalist.

I TAG THEE

I hereby tag WHOEVER WANTS TO DO THE TAG!!!

I have such a weird mix of teen and adult characters here. I am not sure what kind of dinner party that would really shape up to be, but I would like to imagine it would be a fun one? What did you think of my choices? Who would you pick?

The Summer Reader Tag

I was tagged to do the Summer Reader Tag by the lovely Heather @The Frozen Book Blog. I am glad I am getting to this while it is still summer, because some of my tags stay in the drafts forever (sorry about that by the way). Let’s see some questions and answers!

Lemonade: pick a book that started off bitter but got better.

The Song of AchillesPlease don’t hate me for this answer, but it took me like a millennia to get into The Song of Achilles. It was super slow and everything in it just sounded so mean (especially everything concerning women) and I know this is so close to actual Greek mythology, but I was just not in the mood for it. That is not to say that the story isn’t absolutely heart-wrenching and beautiful in the end, but it was a rocky start for me.

Golden Sun: pick a book that made you smile beyond compare.

I smiled A LOT while reading To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. I am pretty sure I laughed out loud in the middle of the night even though the rest of my household was sleeping, but I just couldn’t stop reading once I really started it. (Also, cannot wait to see the story unfold on screen this August!!)

Tropical Flowers: pick a book set in a foreign country.

Okay, let me set one things straight: I am pretty sure 99.9% of the books I read are not set in Austria, so this is like the easiest pick ever? A book I have read this year and that really made me want to visit the place though is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. It is part of the Channel Islands and sounds absolutely lovely (even though I have heard they didn’t film the movie on the island itself?)

Tree Shade: pick a book in which a mysterious or shady character was first introduced.

My absolute favourite shady character was Dustfinger from the Inkworld trilogy when I was little. He was also my first real fictional crush, but I suppose that’s a different story. Anyway, it wasn’t always obvious if you could trust him or not and what his motives are, so he seemed the perfect pick for this category.

Beach Sand: pick a book that was grainy, and the plot barely developed.

The One Memory of Flora BanksLike Heather, I have a bit of difficulty understanding what grainy means in regards to books, but my first thought went to The One Memory of Flora Banks. That book was chunky, repetitive and oddly structured and I had such high hopes for it, which were all crushed when I finally got to read it.

Green Grass: pick a character(s) that were full of life, making you smile.

I don’t know why he comes to mind, but Finnick Odair from the Hunger Games is a strong contender. I always loved him. It’s a classic case of “he deserved better” but while I got to read about him, he made me laugh and care for him and his struggles. He was such a positive character even through hardship.

Watermelon: pick a book that had some juicy secrets.

Trial by Fire (Worldwalker, #1)I don’t know if you know Trial by Fire from the Worldwalker trilogy, but there were secrets kept pretty much for the entirety of the series. Not in a bad way, just in a way that created tension and kept you intrigued.

Sun Hat: pick a book that had a vast, big universe/setting.

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1)The Illuminae Files has a really vast setting. They try to make up for it with schematics and plans, but I still confused the different galaxies and ships all the time. That in no way means I didn’t have a ton of fun exploring the universe with the characters. I love those books!

BBQ: pick a book in which a character was portrayed as a hunk.

Uhm … I don’t know? Charlie from the Jackaby books?? At least I imagine him to be quite a hunk, while being the perfect gentleman at the same time?

Summer Fun: pass the tag on.

I tag whoever wants to do this! I realise that it’s not summer everywhere on earth at the same time, but if you are reading this and feel like you’d have fun doing the tag – YOU ARE HEREBY TAGGED!!!

What did you think of my answers? What would yours have been like? Do you agree or disagree on anything? Let me know in the comments below!

#CurrentlyWatching: Humans

I realise that I haven’t done a #CurrentlyWatching post in quite some time, but I rediscovered the show I want to talk about today for myself after having taken a bit of a break from it. When I turned to Twitter to rave about it, I realised that very few of my friends even knew about the show, so I now want to introduce Humans to you.

This SciFi gem is currently in its third season and the stakes just keep getting higher and higher. It airs on Channel 4 in the UK and AMC in the US. Originally it is based on the Swedish fiction drama Real Humans, but since I haven’t ever seen that, I cannot attest to how close or far they are from their storyline.

Humans shows an alternate reality where humans have advanced so far in technology that they introduce robotic servants called Synths to households. The show portrays the struggles of that shift in society as well as the repercussions once the Synths become self aware.

I cannot tell you what first drew me to this show back when it premiered in 2015. I think they had some very intriguing advertising that made it look like they really wanted to sell Synths to people. If I remember correctly, they even had a Facebook messenger chatbot for a while that sent you on a little adventure with a synth. No matter how I found out about the show though, it was one of the few I watched live every single week and that in a time where I stream pretty much anything after its original air time. However, I can definitely try and tell you why I stuck with it.

Humans is a show that doesn’t try to persuade you with many gimmicks. It has a higher production budget than the Swedish parent show, but it is rather quiet and eerie still. As the title promises and despite the focus on Synths and artificial intelligence as a big theme, this show really is about the human condition. How do we act when there is something in front of us that looks like us and is able to act like us, yet we are told they are merely a machine? Do we show compassion? Does our darker side win? There is something very unsettling and creepy about the whole thing, but at the same time you will be able to find yourself in multiple characters and their struggles. Over the seasons, Humans builds up and adds more complex moral questions to the story. What starts in a small household with only a specific group of Synths being conscious, soon begins to spread and becomes a global issue. I found it extremely fascinating to see the characters confronted with difficult decisions and the way they decided to deal with them. It made me question how I would act, especially since technology these days is targeted in the direction of human-looking AIs becoming a real thing.

In addition to the moral dilemmas, I was really happy with the casting! I know that the actors and actresses who were cast as the AI robots had to visit a specific Synth school to study the behaviour and mannerisms of their characters. The acting is really phenomenal on their part. But also the rest of the cast seem like good choices and realistic for their age groups as well. Over the seasons there are a couple of guest appearances and limited character arcs that I also had a lot of fun with.

CW: rape, abuse, suicide, violence

It is very difficult to spotlight just one character. The main synth group the show is based around is extremely faceted and each and every one of them would deserve the spotlight for sure. My personal favourite is Matty, a badass hacker girl. I also have a soft spot for Leo, a person who is stuck between humans and synths, not sure where his alliance should lie and he fits in. However, the person who has probably gone through some of the most significant development is Laura Hawkins.

She is a working mother, an initial skeptic in regards of synths who later turns into a synth-rights-advocate. While I may not always agree with her approach to things or decisions for that matter, that woman is really there when it counts and ultimately does the right thing. She is fiercely protective of her family, but also extends that protection to others in need. She’s tough and resilient and if I ever were in a pickle, I’d want her in my corner.

I hope you got a closer look at Humans and maybe would consider watching it now? Have you already seen a couple episodes? Let’s talk about it!
