Mini Reviews: Parsnips, Buttered and The Darkest Minds

It’s no secret that I have read very little during my time in Berlin so far. Being busy, tired and just generally occupied with other things will do that. I also have a very short way to and from work (which I love), so there’s not even really an opportunity to read on the train or so. But I am nonetheless quite happy I read something and here’s what that something was:

Parsnips, Buttered: How to win at modern life, one email at a time by Joe Lycett

Parsnips, Buttered: How to win at modern life, one email at a timeEvery now and then, when the mood strikes, I like to dabble in some non-fiction books. And when I do, I am mostly drawn to works written by either actors or comedians I already know – Parsnips, Buttered was no exception to that.

People who have seen some of Joe Lycett’s work, know exactly what kind of ridiculous email-exchanges he gets himself tangled up in. This book is a hilarious compilation of some of his mischief, but it is by no means a guide or how-to-book. It’s just a little bit of short-lived fun that definitely got better with me hearing Joe’s voice narrate the whole thing in my head.

Fazit: 3/5 stars! I can see this working for some people and not at all striking the right chord with others.

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds, #1)Some of you already know this, but I won tickets to see a preview of The Darkest Minds in August. Even though I usually try to avoid dubbed versions of movies, I didn’t even mind it as much for this one and really enjoyed the film. In my opinion, that movie would have worked a whole lot better a couple years back, because dystopian YA book adaptations just aren’t really that sought after these days and all the adult reviewers kept comparing it to the likes of Hunger Games and Maze Runner, even though it could have been its own thing.

I am rambling too much tough. What I meant to say was that I enjoyed the movie, but that made reading the book in hindsight a little more tricky. It’s not that I think one or the other is better per se, just that there are almost as many similarities as there are differences and therefore reading can get a little tiresome.

For me, the book filled in some questions that were left open after watching the movie, while I generally enjoyed some of the visuals better than reading about those events. I am curious where this story will go, but it is not exactly a priority of mine. Chubs is definitely one of my favourite characters now and the guy who played Liam in the movie is on my radar for young talent!

Fazit: 3.5/5 stars! Is it wrong of me to say that the prime of those kind of stories is past?

Have you read either one of those? Did you read more installments in the Darkest Minds series? Did you see the movie and would you like a more thorough comparison from me? Let’s talk about it!

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Sept 24-30)

Can anyone else not believe that I’ve been in Berlin a month already!? But more on that in my monthly wrap-up! Now, let’s just check out some trailers I’ve found this week.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix

I am so pumped for this movie! It looks beautiful and dark and I cannot wait!!

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

NAGINI WHAT NOW? That horrid illustration I saw floating around Tumblr makes more sense now … Anyway, I want to watch it so bad, but I am still so turned off by Depp being in it.

Holmes & Watson

This is not my Holmes and Watson but I still chuckled at some of the jokes?

It actually looks good and I hope that the trailer isn’t just misleading in that regard.

Creed II

The trailer looks great!

Better Start Running

You can’t just tell everyone that you are on the run … that’s not how this works

The Long Dumb Road

It looks weirdly nice? I mean, it’s basically Pimento from B99.

Keira just fits into period dramas.

Jonah Hill is rocking it this year.

TV Shows

I am pretty sure this already aired on the BBC and that I wanted to watch it, so I am happy it’s coming to Netflix now.

What’s with Netflix throwing out Teasers for shows that tell you absolutely nothing?

Dynasty (Season 2)

What happened to Crystal? Where is Steven? Aside from that, I am just glad Liam is back, even if it looks like the CW is trying to get rid of the show.

Wynonna Earp (Season 4)

I am hopelessly behind (unfortunately) but I am beyond happy that the show got renewed already. Earpers rock!

Marvel’s Daredevil (Season 3)

House of Cards (Season 6)

The amount of people in the comments for this video saying that the show is dead without Spacey is ridiculous. How can they not support there being consequences to actions?

What are you watching? I just binged Sisters on Netflix and fell a little bit in love with it. If I were to revive the #CurrentlyWatching feature, I think I’d like to focus on a couple of Australian shows. How would you feel about that?

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Sept 17-23)

My ingenious plan to post more during the past week obviously didn’t pan out. To be fair, most days after work, I was out and about trying to find an outfit to wear for this upcoming Monday. I am going to an award show and I did not pack for that kind of occasion. Anyhow, after a long and mostly frustrating search for the right outfit, I am now quite happy, but also needed my evenings to me to relax. This weekend was all about doing nothing! Still, I have found the time to look up some trailers for you. Here you go:

Captain Marvel

CHILLS! PURE CHILLS! Honestly, I am just so excited. It looks gorgeous and Brie seems like the perfect person for the role.

Mary Poppins Returns

To me, it feels like they took so much care with creating this movie. The vibe and the aesthetic is very much on brand, but somehow I doubt it can ever be as iconic as the original? But I am still going to watch and probably love it!

The New Romantic

If this isn’t my kind of movie, then I don’t even know? I am so glad RomComs are getting a revival.

If Beale Street Could Talk

This movie is going to be so beautifully sad.

I love how they just randomly threw in one single shot of Lili Reinhart without any sort of context.

Beautiful Boy

I just keep thinking of how this is a real story and the son in the story actually published a couple not completely unknown YA books.

Stan & Ollie

I can definitely see this movie finding its audience.

This is too dark and disturbing for me.

This is so confusing, but since it’s a documentary, it seems fascinating.

Ralph Breaks the Internet

It’s going to be so freaking adorable!

TV Shows

Doctor Who (Series 11)

I am happy for everyone who is excited for the new female Doctor, but that was the worst and most un-Doctor-like music choice ever.

Daredevil (Season 3)

I am SO looking forward to this, but at the same time I am super behind on the Netflix Marvel shows and I don’t really want to catch up on Luke and Iron Fist …

Station 19 (Season 2)

I haven’t watched S1, but it looks like the same amount of drama as on Greys.

Supernatural (Season 14)

Why does this look like Supernatural did a Peaky Blinders crossover?

What are you watching? Are you excited about any of these? Let’s chat!

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Sept 10-16)

It has been a wild week for me! As some of you know from Twitter, we (meaning work) hosted a movie premiere in Berlin and I got to go and it was super fun, but also stressful to make sure everything was organised right. I am really enjoying my time here though, which explains why I am not on the blog a lot. I am going to try and get more of a routine into it all again, but for now, you can always count on my trailer posts!

Stella’s Last Weekend

Alex and Nat in one movie, it does not happen often!

Private Life

Looks like a tough issue but a good approach on it.

The Death and Life of John F. Donovan

It may not look like anything yet, but the premise sounds kind of interesting.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Oooh, Coen brothers on Netflix?

Viper Club

I feel like Susan Sarandon stopped aging 20 years ago or so.

Brampton’s Own

It doesn’t exactly look like a good movie, but suddenly a wild Liv from iZombie appeared and I was at least a little more intrigued.

This is not for me. At all.

TV Shows

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

This is definitely not the Sabrina, teenage witch, you remember from your childhood. I am pumped but also slightly worried about its connection to Riverfail.

Titans (Sneak Peek)

This is hilarious!

Midnight, Texas (Season 2)

Star (Season 3)

I can’t wait to see what’s coming and to hear some new music.

Daredevil (Season 3)

It’s not a real trailer, but I’ll take what I can get!

How to Get Away With Murder (Season 5)

This show just never runs out of twists and turns.

Grey’s Anatomy (Season 15)

Seriously!?!?! DeLuca and Meredith?

This looks so creepy.

I think I’d watch this.

It looks so cuuuute.

Travels with my Father (Season 2)

I watched it, but still … I cannot believe it got another season?

What are you watching? Would anyone ever be interested in a post about German movies I’d recommend watching? Would that be weird because I don’t know if people would even find ways to watch it online with subtitles? Let me know in the comments below?

What’s On My Bookshelf Tag

I don’t remember the last time I spent this much time on my own laptop, but it’s been really tough to find my work-life-balance so far (probably because I love work but whatever). Still, I don’t want there to only be trailer posts on the blog, so I was really happy that Kelly @Just Another Book in the Wall tagged me for the What’s On My Bookshelf Tag (originally created by Emily @Wicked Good Reads)! It’s a little hard to do without my physical bookshelf, but I will try my best!

A Library Book

S.: S. Hardcover in slipcase : [S.]: By Doug Dorst: S. : J. J. Abrams (Ship of Theseus)I don’t have any library books, however, I DO have a book in library optic and that’s S. by J.J. Abrams and Doug Dorst. That book is something else, which always makes it hard to explain why I still haven’t finished reading it.

A Book You Got As a Gift

Probably a couple throughout my days, but somehow the first one I thought of was Landline by Rainbow Rowell, which my very good friend Cristina sent me all the way from Portugal. I love her so much and not just because she up and decided to send me one of her books to keep.

A Childhood Book

Today, I am really just going with the first book that pops into my mind, which in this case is Momo by Michael Ende. I am pretty sure I did a book report on it and confused my entire class about what it’s about.

A Magical Book

Devils & Thieves (Devils & Thieves, #1)All books are magical in itself, because words are magic, but for the purpose of this tag I will go with Devils & Thieves. Despite the book having quite a few shortcomings, the magical system is really interesting!

A Romantic Book

Nicholas Sparks books are pretty much synonymous with romance, right? One of the ones I really, really liked was The Longest Ride. I guess I appreciate a good dual time line if done well.

A Steamy Book

I don’t really read all that many steamy books? But the first chapter of Save the Date by Morgan Matson was surprisingly steamy in comparison to the lack of romance (which I very much appreciated) during the rest of the book.

An Old Book

Persuasion? Persuasion! (Cause it’s my favourite Austen book.)

A Book That Makes You Happy and/or Laugh

I recently read Parsnips, Buttered by Joe Lycett, which is basically just a compilation of mails Joe wrote or received. Some of those stories are truly hilarious. He is one of my favourite British comedians, so I definitely laughed, while I simultaneously very much doubt it’s for everyone.

A Book That Makes You Emotional

We all know I cannot stop mentioning this book, but The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was really great and made me feel so many different things.

A Book Whose Ending You Disliked

Allegiant (Divergent, #3)? I just always pretend that book doesn’t even exist in the series.

A Book You Wish Had Illustrations

I am not sure if maybe there were a couple tiny illustrations in The Night Circus, but I would want a proper graphic novel for the magic that is this book!

A Book or Genre You Like to Read on a Rainy Day

I think I am a pretty simple girl and can read whatever comes my way on a rainy day. Lately it has been more contemporary and adult fiction admittedly though.

Anyone and everyone who wants to do this tag! I am unfortunately really not able to be super active in the community right now, so I have no idea who has done the tag or who would enjoy it. Link me up if you decide to give it a try though, so I can see your answers!

Did you like this tag? Could you relate to my answers? Let’s talk a little bit in the comments and I’ll try not to need a week to respond to them!

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Sept 3-9)

I didn’t really get around to posting anything this week, because it was my first week at work. Everything was all new and came with a lot of information and faces and names to remember, but at the same time it was a lot of fun. I love to work and especially in this line of business. So much so that I went to a work related event on Saturday. All of that makes me think I really made the right call with coming to Berlin. Anyway, it’s Sunday and that means trailers and not wrap ups!

Instant Family

I so want to foster or adopt kids one day!! I am excited for this movie.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

It looks different in each trailer, but I really want to watch it.

Descendants 3: Under the Sea

How did I never realise that Kitty (TOATBILB) was in the previous Descendants movies!?!?

At Eternity’s Gate

My favourite depiction of Van Gogh will forever be the one episode of Doctor Who.

At First Light

I don’t know why exactly this is giving me Chronicle vibes, but I am intrigued.

This is going to be brutal.

Again, critics are raving about it. This should get some attention during the award cycle.

The Favourite

It looks … crazy?

I saw Colin and I clicked, but submarine movies aren’t really my thing.

The Beach Bum

But … what is it about?

22 July

I don’t think that this is a movie that I’d usually go for because of the topic, but I like that Netflix is telling stories from all kinds of countries.

Chef Flynn

I like cooking shows, so this is my documentary of the week.

TV Shows

BoJack Horseman (Season 5)

It never ceases to amaze me how great of a show this is, because I never expected it.

I have no idea what’s happening, but this looks really cool?

Van Helsing (Season 3)

I tweeted about this show and did not exactly praise it, but the creators still liked my tweets and that will forever confuse me.

I don’t exactly see this being a commercial success, but I can see people really enjoying it.

Narcos: Mexico

What are you watching? How are you doing? Let’s chat!

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Aug 27 – Sept 2)

Can you believe it’s already September? I am starting my internship tomorrow and it doesn’t even feel real yet. But let’s talk about some trailers, because that’s why you are really here:

A Private War

Rosamund Pike is going to be amazing in this.

Where Hands Touch

This is not going to be an easy watch, but I am happy to see that Amandla is so busy in her career. Also, George MacKay is forever underrated.

Bad Times at the El Royale

Weird and a little creepy but I like it.

The Front Runner

I always feel weird when Hugh Jackman is in a dodgy role.

First Man

Wow, I can’t believe that the controversy around this movie is that they won’t show the planting of the American flag on the moon. How is that a reason to boycott a movie?

Postcards from London

I don’t know if that’s just me, but I feel like this is a very on brand movie for Harris.

I Think We’re Alone Now

There’s so much still unknown about what’s happening here.

Tea with the Dames

Documentary of the week.

TV Shows

Sorry for Your Loss

I NEED THIS SHOW IN MY LIFE! I honestly think this is the one thing I am most excited about in this post.

The Romanoffs

You’re a Romanoff, you’re a Romanoff – EVERYONE is a Romanoff!

Dogs of Berlin

Look, I am all for more German Netflix productions. But … why does it always have to be crime related?

The First

I doubt it’s going to play on Mars much, but it could be very interesting.

Star (Season 3)

This Is Us (Season 3)

This show never ceases to be emotional.

Riverdale (Season 3)

How is everyone just a member of the Serpents now? I am just living for Falice in bed together haha

The Good Place (Season 3)

IT’S COMING BACK SOON! I love and hate how we have no idea what is in store for us.

Single Parents

Would only watch because of Leighton Meester.

The Good Doctor (Season 2)

This at least shows more than the teaser from last week.

True Detective (Season 3)

I am hoping for everyone who watches that the third season is better than the second.

The Dragon Prince

Still like the look of it.

What are you watching? Have you seen anything you like? Let’s talk about that!
