Top 18 TV Shows of 2018

As some of you so lovingly dubbed me, I am the Queen of TV. I watch way more shows than a human should be able to, which was probably the reason this post was like a hundred times harder to write than the ranking of the books and movies of 2018. To clarify, this ranking is pretty random. You could probably switch a couple of them around without me getting too fussed about it. However, it was super hard for me to decide which series to include or exclude. Ultimately I came to the decision to not take certain seasons into account (although the latest season of something might have affected my judgement) but rather rate the show as a whole. Also, I did not only include shows that came out in 2018, but rather just whatever I watched (although no panel shows or competitions). Now that that’s sorted, let’s get started!

18. Midnight, Texas

I used to be really into True Blood, but it fizzled out eventually. Still, I was excited to watch Midnight, Texas and see where it was going. It’s a weird one … because the set definitely always looks like a set rather than a place people live in. But nonetheless, I fell for the characters and the supernatural drama. They turned it UP for Season 2, but unfortunately they got cancelled. Here’s to hoping they’ll find another home!

17. Altered Carbon

I am pretty sure I watched Altered Carbon while is some kind of feverish craze. I was super sick with a temperature and it all felt like a dream at times, but I enjoyed the heck out of it! If you want to read more about the show from my previous #CurrentlyWatching post, click here!

16. The Royals

Those of you who know me, know that I have been obsessed with The Royals from the get go! It was and will probably be forever one of my favourite shows. I even rooted for the bad guy, relentlessly so. Their 4th season was their best one yet. It had an almost cinematic quality to it and I will FOREVER hold a grudge against the E! because they cancelled the show at its height and no one else picked it up. FOREVER!!! (Click here for more info on the show)

15. Schitt’s Creek

I still can’t believe most of you are sleeping on this show! I don’t even watch all that many sitcoms, but I would never ever miss an episode of Schitt’s Creek. Also, they have an openly pan character with the most romantic on screen relationship. I CRIED they were so freaking adorable! (You can find out more about the show here)

14. Tidelands

I know that a lot of people think this show is trash, and … I get it. But I loved it regardless. Maybe it was the sirens, because lets be real, sirens are just super cool. But I also have a thing for Australian shows for some reason (still patiently waiting for another season of The Wrong Girl and hoping people will discover Please Like Me eventually). It’s glossy and dramatic and predictable, but I liked it. I like shows like that.

13. Peaky Blinders

Peaky Blinders has some of the freaking best writing and most intense walking scenes ever. All jokes aside, it is a formidable show with amazing characters that will steal your heart and corrupt it! (Read more about it here)

12. Plan Coeur/The Hook Up Plan

Plan Coeur was one of those super nice distractions. It was fun and quick and sweet. It leaves you wanting more without that incessant need to have the next season right that moment. Sometimes those kind of shows are just exactly what you need. It’s also really great if you want to brush up on your French to be honest.

11. The Good Place

Who is not absolutely in love with The Good Place. It’s like they reinvent the story completely anew with every season. To come up with some of the ridiculous things the writers thought about, is just … completely beyond me sometimes. It’s a show where I can never wait to find out what happens next! (Read more about it here)

10. Maniac

I did not expect to like this show and I get everyone who has their quarrels with it. However, I’ve never seen mental health issues portrayed in such a complex, layered and insightful way. Yes, sometimes the show felt all over the place and heavy and sad, but by the end of it, my heart was light and I was happy?

9. Sisters

I know that the whole “fertility doctor messes up life of many by using his own sperm”-story has been done quite a lot in some way or another, but I loved this interpretation of it. They did well in not focusing on the father, but rather on a specific set of the siblings or in this case sisters. But it’s like so freaking hidden on Netflix that I can’t even find a regular trailer for it anymore and that makes me so smad (sad and mad).

8. The End of the F***ing World

This show was so freaking weird and I was living for it. I wasn’t actually sure it would get another season but it will and I have NO idea what’s going to happen or where they are going to continue with it. I just think it’s cool it got an audience not despite but because of its weirdness. (You can click here for more on the show)

7. Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger

This show was really, really, really good! It introduced some fresh new talent, was set in the not-so-typical New Orleans you usually see on the screen and called out privilege and social issues while they were at it. Morally grey like a lot of the Marvel content, it immediately drew me in! Freeform better not mess this up.

6. Travelers

I feel like Travelers is a show you either like or you don’t want to watch at all. It’s a show I would not judge by its first ten minutes (like I do so very often), because they are not representative of the amazing character work and development over several seasons. (Read more about Travelers here)

5. Marvel’s Runaways

You all already know that I liked this show a lot and season 2 did not disappoint at all. In fact, I believe it made me fall in love with certain characters even more than before and I wasn’t sure that was even possible! (I did a full post on this show as well, which you can read here)

4. You

It was creepy. It was wonderful. What can I say? Stalker stories scare me as I have made some rather unpleasant experiences in the past. However, I am still intrigued by it when the casting is right? And Penn Badgley does the psycho creep like no one else.

3. Anne with an E

This is one of the most beautiful and wholesome and amazing shows to exist on Netflix! Anne is legit such a smart show, with amazing characters and a world that spans beyond what was written in the books (which I still haven’t read). I understand that the differences to the literary and even earlier adaptations on screen made some people hesitant. It’s not as bubbly and colorful, but it is a work of art nonetheless and a worthy one to watch. (Also, read more about here)

2. The Handmaid’s Tale

Sooo … I crumbled and watched it (Max Minghella is to blame). Everyone warned me and said how heavy it was. I have colleagues at work who couldn’t stomach more than one episode per day. What did I do? I binged both available season over the course of a weekend. It messed me up in all the best ways! The acting of all those people … I just cannot even!

1. A Discovery of Witches

I wanna remind everyone that this is a 100% subjective list. A Discovery of Witches had plotholes and left a lot of viewers in confusion because they didn’t manage to explain something vital to the magic system, but that didn’t stop me from falling head over heels for this show. Everything was just so freaking beautiful and I couldn’t get enough of it. I am beyond happy that there’s a season 2 and 3, which should cover all the books, already confirmed!

Honorable Mentions

UnREAL, Humans, Lost in Space, Our Girl, The Gifted, Free Rein, Younger, Wynonna Earp, 3%, Timeless, Daredevil, BoJack Horseman

I just couldn’t do it! I can’t narrow it down to 18 … so there were some more shows I really liked this year. I am pretty sure I’ve forgotten something. If you can try and think of anything else, feel free to tell me in the comments and I’ll let you know if I watched it!

    • That last episode!!! I need to know what changed Willow’s mind, because she did not look like someone who was forced to get married at gunpoint or anything like that. I am mostly mad at E! because they just sacked ALL their fictional shows because they wanted to get back to focusing on reality TV … aka the biggest BS in the world.

  1. This is a fantastic list and thank you for always keeping my to-watch list long, haha πŸ™‚
I am so, so mad about The Royals and I think I will forever be just as well. It was such a good show with an incredible cast and I loved them all so much and ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I’m mad just writing about it right now. Why.
I really need to watch Plan Coeur sometime soon, it sounds like the kind of show I’d enjoy, I can’t wait! πŸ™‚ And so so excited that A Discovery of Witches has a second season, I can’t wait to watch more of it, I am always so intrigued whenever I watch it πŸ™‚ Oh and Bojack! I’ve been watching Bojack Horseman, I don’t know if I ever mentioned it to you? I’m on season 3 at the moment and I’m really enjoying it and… well despite its silly appearances, I’d say, I just LOVE the messages through it all.

    • YOU ARE WATCHING BOJACK AND YOU DIDN’T TELL ME!!???! :O I am in shock! Also low-key didn’t expect you to like Bojack ahaha I am warning you now, Season 4 was the toughest for me. I cried a lot while watching it and that was when I knew the show had me in its grasps. Season 5 wasn’t as emotional afterwards.

      • I started watching it when I was stuck at home in the last couple of months and have no idea why I didn’t update you about it – I forgot you were watching it too somehow! Episodes are getting a bit tough at times and I feel like everything’s always on the edge of being so messed up. It’s like watching a train wreck or something. Yet somehow I like it? Princess Carolyn is one of my favorites for sure. I’m…. well I’m scared to get to the next season now hahaha.

      • My favourite is Todd. I love the dude. And I think the greatest Princess Carolyn episode in the show was also in Season 4. That season was just overall my fave. But yes, I do watch BoJack. I binged it while I was in Vancouver.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Todd is a close second, I love him just as well! I’ll keep you updated for sure on my thoughts when I watch new episodes if you don’t mind then haha, I just love rambling about shows with you ❀️

  2. Oh my god there are so many TV shows I need to watch still! I’ve had The Good Place on my to-watch list for so long now I really really want to try and get around to it soon. Basically everyone has amazing things to say about it and seeing it on your list of favourite TV shows for 2018 has just made me more determined to actually get around to it. I also really need to catch up on Cloak and Dagger (I saw the Pilot episode and then none of the others). :/
I was so excited for A Discovery of Witches when I saw the trailer, I want to read the book first but then I’m going to get right onto the show. It looks amazing, and oh it’s great news it has a second and third season confirmed. πŸ™‚

    • You really need to get on the Good Place train, because that show is so deservedly hyped!! The twists are something that no one saw coming sometimes!

As for Discovery of Witches. I think we talked about it before. I am not a fan of the books at all! There wasn’t a single person in my trusted circle of bookish friends who didn’t enjoy the series more than the written stuff, but it’s obviously up to you πŸ˜€

      Liked by 1 person

      • Ahh, that settles it then, The Good Place is going to be the next TV show I start. I have to jump on that hype train. πŸ™‚
Oh yes I think I remember talking to you about the book vs the TV series. I dunno, normally I do read the book before seeing the show (it’s what I’ve always done) but I guess if I can’t get into the book I’ll watch the TV show and read the book afterwards. I kind of want to see what the differences are either way. πŸ™‚

        Liked by 1 person

      • Well, if you want to spot differences, you’ll have a field day with A Discovery of Witches haha there’s loads. I can’t get over the fact that she show didn’t do supernatural yoga. But other than that I am pro show all the way haha

  3. Ohhh, The Royals! I have to say that I only continued on with the show because it was canceled, lol. I have a bittersweet relationship with TV because I feel like, more often than not, shows continue for endless seasons and I end up getting tired of it or not connecting with the characters anymore. That’s probably why I’ve given up on many series that I used to love back in the day, like Arrow and Teen Wolf, because they went much longer than I thought was needed. When I heard that The Royals was not going to have more seasons after the fourth one, I decided to go back to it, since I could pretty much binge -watch all my way from season 2. I’ll definitely miss these characters, though! They were great!
I also watched The End of the F***ing world this year, and I thought it was such an odd show. My main complaint was the ending. I was watching it on my TV and I for real thought there was something wrong with it, because the next episodes just weren’t showing up. And then I realized that there were no more episodes and that was how the show actually ended, hahah. I really hope there’s a season 2, because I need to know what happens! I really liked the lesbian cops duo and I was looking forward to see more of them.
I didn’t watch many shows this year, except for Riverdale – that is so bad it makes me want to keep watching? Like a snack that tastes bad but it’s incredibly addictive? – and Elite, that I enjoyed thoroughly and am also looking forward to season 2.

    • I get that sometimes it’s daunting to have like a gazillion seasons ahead of you, especially when they might decline in quality, but with the Royals I just cannot agree that it was for the better for them to stop at their height. They left with a massive cliffhanger that involved my favourite characters on the show and I won’t ever forgive them for that. I am bitter like that haha
And wow, Riverdale has become known as Riverfail on my blog. I was so on board before the first season finale, but dang that show is a mess. As you can hopefully tell already, I am still watching it though … so yeah, it’s like a car crash. Terrible but you can’t look away.
Also, the second season of the End of the F***ing World is already in production.

  4. There are soo many tv shows on your list that I want to watch! πŸ˜€ I’m really happy to see them on your list, as it makes me even more exited to get around to them.
The ones I want to watch the most are Peaky Blinders and Marvel’s Runaways. Hopefully I’ll be able to get to them soon. And you already know how much I enjoyed A Discovery of Witches, so I’m very happy that it made it to the top of your list. πŸ˜€

    • Peaky Blinders was my religion for a while. That show goes dark but in just the right ways. And who doesn’t love to root for the villains? You have to keep me updated should you start watching it. Same with Runaways of course!

  5. Ahhhh yes Anne with an E ❀️ I love that show so much, season 2 even more than season 1 and I can’t wait for season 3. It makes me so happy that they decided to make the show more diverse than the books πŸ™‚

  6. I still really want to watch royals, just thanks to that clip you sent me πŸ˜‰ Sad it got cancelled 😦 I definitely want to watch tidelands- what can I say? Trash is my jam πŸ˜‰ I started watching peaky blinders last year- and wow! I definitely want to check out cloak and dagger and runaways as well. I want to check out You too- though I still want to read the book first. The good place was insanely good- I’m so grateful to you for introducing me to it!! Yay that discovery of witches is getting a season 2 and 3 (also phew, cos I can’t bring myself to read the rest of the books and I need to know what happens next!!!) I also really like timeless (though I need to catch up) and the gifted πŸ˜€ Love this list!

  7. Yet another great list, Kat ❀️

There are SO many shows on this list that I still need to watch – so many shows, so little time! The Royals and The Handmaid’s Tale have been on my list for far too long so they are definitely top priority. I’m also really interested in watching Peaky Blinders, I’ve heard it’s really really good!

Like you I loved YOU – it was just SO good! I also really, really liked The Good Place, I’m now waiting on season three but I just know that it will just become better and better with every episode. I’m in the middle of Maniac, I started it when it first came out and then I got distracted but I absolutely want to finish it.

Here’s to many more amazing shows in 2019 xx

    • I wish I could watch shows all day long, but alas that is not life haha still, I am not the norm when it comes to the amount of stuff I watch. I am sure you will get into some great shows this year as well πŸ˜€
