I do watch a lot and it has become even more evident with these posts. I mean, this is already post #6 and I’ve written my first binge-watching round-up on the 17th of December. Let me know if you can think of a better way than numbering the posts maybe?
The Umbrella Academy
So, here’s the thing … I took Friday (the release day) off work, woke up in the morning (because Netflix shows release at 9AM in my country) and did a 10-hour-binge (without a break) of The Umbrella Academy. NO REGRETS!
The Umbrella Academy is a comic book that was, in part, created by My Chemical Romance member Gerard Way. That guy is incredibly talented and even if the show didn’t stick to the comics 100%, they did a formidable job in adapting the story and characters. This isn’t your usual “superheroes need to save the world” kind of deal. This is more of a “we are all completely messed up but better together and therefore need to somehow make this family with all its massive issues work so that we don’t end this world”. Exciting, right?
I already knew that I would love the show based on the casting alone. I miss Tom Hopper’s days on Black Sails dearly, Ellen Page is just too cool for this world and my darling and absolute favourite, Robert Sheehan, gets to play the most awesome character on the show. I think I’ve said this before, but characters that are called Klaus have like an instant plus with me and, lo and behold, Sheehan’s character Number Four was also called Klaus! It was just coincidence that I also absolute loved his persona on the show after the fact though. I liked the acting all around, but I feel like Sheehan got to show his full range with craziness as well as deep emotions, showing a performance that’s a little bit reminiscent of his role Nathan on Misfits. I just love the dude, alright?
Also, on a last note: the music selection and the random put fitting dancing scenes are perfection!
The Dragon Prince (Season 2)
The thing with the Dragon Prince is that I really enjoy the show but the seasons are SO short. It takes me a little bit to get into it and by the time I actually want to just sit there and binge it all, it kind of … ends? In my opinion, season 1 was a little bit better, but not by much. It’s just that I hoped for a bit more development in terms of the relationship between the characters, but I don’t think that a lot has changed throughout the season. They all had their own stuff to deal with and had more singular focus than group efforts. So, I am not saying that wasn’t interesting, I just hoped for something a bit different.
Also, I love Bait and he was massively neglected this season. I legit looked up if you can buy a plush of him (you can, but unfortunately only in shops that don’t ship to me), that’s how much I love him and he deserved better.
Sorry for Your Loss
I started watching this show a while back, but I only now realised that Facebook Watch is, in fact, available in Germany and that I could binge the rest now. They did such a quiet release of the platform, I think a lot of people are missing out on it.
Sorry for Your Loss is an amazing show about grief. We all deal differently with loss and that’s cool, but most media are scared to dig into the really not so pretty sides of it all. When you are grieving you can be selfish, mean, angry and all of that for however long you need it to be. I have to say that I preferred the scenes when we were with Leigh (Elizabeth Olsen) instead of her mum or sister, but obviously the whole thing affected them too.
This show isn’t about plot, a lot of that is predictable, but it is instead about characters. It’s about their feelings and relationships, how hard it is to find out things about someone who is gone and having no way to talk to them about it and that’s the kind of show I just dig! Episodes aren’t too long, so if things are getting too heavy for you, you don’t have to sit through an entire hour.
And as a little final treat – the show was renewed for a second season, so it will continue in fall 2019.
Do you watch any of the shows I mentioned here? Do you want to talk about them? Let’s chat!
So I guess you did move on after Umbrella Academy. Based on your Twitter, it seemed like finishing it left you in a sort of agony, LOL.

I didn’t move on emotionally. I still think about that show every freaking day.

That was my reaction for weeks after She-Ra. And I’m just getting over that reaction with Hamilton.

Oh, I never got over Hamilton. I still know almost the entire first act by heart.

I’m getting to that point! 😂

Just imagine how I would have freaked out if I had actually seen it life. All I have is the CDs and a book that I refused to leave at home for weeks and carried everywhere with me (It is a huge book – not the biography, but a book about the musical with the texts, cast pics and interviews).

Please don’t hate me. I saw the show last week. It was amazing.

You talked about it a lot on facebook, I already know. And I haven’t met a single person who didn’t like the show so far, so no surprise there either.

Phew! That’s a relief.

Well I haven’t seen any of these myself, but I have The Umbrella Academy on my Netflix watch list and I can’t wait to get around to it! 🙂 I haven’t taken this Friday off work or anything, but I am working from home so I may put it on in the background. it’ll be a challenge to see if I can focus on my job or if I’ll be swayed by the show (probably the latter). 😀 ❤

So, did you end up watching The Umbrella Academy? I feel like it isn’t a show you can just have running in the background, you kind of have to pay attention?

Yep, I actually started it on the weekend and binge watched all ten episodes, but now I need more! (I’m already on my first re-watch of season one).

It was so good, right? Who’s your favourite on the show? Mine’s definitely Klaus 😀

Definitely, and mine is Klaus too, but I do like Alison just because you can see how hard she tries to not abuse her power and with Vanya and all that. 🙂

I get that about Alison. I honestly wonder with them traveling back in time, whether they are going to change things from the get go.

Same here, it will be interesting to see where the second season goes, because with them going back in time I feel like literally everything could be re-written!

Right? Would One become half-ape? Would Vanya be integrated in the group right away? Would Alison try to recreate her path from the first time around to get her daughter back? Very curious about what happens next!

Yep, would Ben still die and would Five still end up in the apocalypse future? Would Klaus still end up in Vietnam? There are so many questions and I just want season two so we can get the answers!

I need to finish all 3 volumes of The Umbrella Academy before checking out the show, but the show looks really good! Glad to see you’re still on fire with the shows you binge nowadays! 😛

Hahaha I will never stop binge-watching. I don’t know how I have the time, but it’s part of my lifestyle now.
Are you planning on doing a sort of comparison of the comics and the show? I don’t think they are extremely alike, even if Gerard and Gabriel worked with the showrunner.

I will most likely share my thoughts on each of them individually and let everyone realize how similar/different they are and if it’s worth their time to pick up the comics if they ever enjoyed the show. 😛 Although I got a bunch of other stories queued up for the time being hahah I don’t mind if they’re different as long as it’s loyal to the source material and not something that just spits at the original product to be its own thing. 😮

I love reading comics and I actually wanted to check out the Umbrella Academy before watching the show too, but we don’t have them at libraries here and buying the English version costs as much as a hardcover book … so, in terms of how much time I spend on reading comics, I can’t always justify spending that kind of cash. 😦 It makes me sad, but they are freaking expensive.
I just know that Gerard was very happy with the show, so I don’t think it spits on the original product at all. I think it goes in depth a bit more.

Oh I HAVE to watch The Umbrella Academy, as I’m currently on a superpower high after finishing Archenemies! I’m so excited to dive into it, as the trailer was really good and got me super interested in the show 😍 I also want to watch the second Season of the Dragon Prince (I’ve only watched the first episode), but I do have to agree that the seasons are always too short 😦 I’m just not as invested in the plot as I could be, even though I like the characters!

You really do! The Umbrella Academy has quickly become an absolute favourite of mine and if that is what Netflix is doing now that they have lost all their Marvel shows to Disney, I am content.
I so have to agree on the Dragon Prince. I like the characters too, but I am not as into it and invested as I potentially could be.

Umbrella Academy just turned out so great, I love it to bits. And Sorry for Your Loss is that kind of calm show that has quite a lot of emotion but isn’t completely exhausting to watch.

I have watched The Umbrella Academy as well and I LOVED it! ❤ It was such a good show, even though I had some problems with it. (But now show is perfect!) My favourite characters were Klaus, Five and Ben. I seriously adored those three! 😀 Also YES, Klaus reminded me of Nathan sooo much! I was obsessed with that show when I was younger, though I did stop watching it after Robert Sheehan left. Amazing post! 🙂

I actually watched Misfits all the way through and quite liked the later seasons again, although they were terribly dull in s4. Was he still in S3? Because I believe that was my favourite one to be honest.

I don’t think so? But to be honest I have no idea! It’s been literary ages since I have watched that show…
