Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Sept 23-29)

It is Sunday and we all know what that means – Trailers! I don’t have anything to really preface this post with, so let’s jump right into it.

Movies

Frozen 2

This trailer is finally making some sense.

American Son

I just know that this movie is going to hurt to watch.

Mr Jones

Don’t think this is my cup of tea.

TV Shows

The War of the Worlds

Who would have thought that the BBC finally released the trailer for something they’ve been advertising for over a year? Now, if only they also released the trailer for Noughts and Crosses.

Dollface

There’s a literal cat-lady. I need to see what this is all about.

Mrs Fletcher

Did not know what to expect from a show with that title, but I think I could be into it.

For All Mankind

I kinda dig alternate history shows.

Vagrant Queen

It worries me that Doc is in this, but I guess he needs money too while Wynonna was on hold.

Charmed (Season 2)

I actually, finally, gave this show a chance and am halfway through the first season, but I still don’t think it will age as well as the OG series. Does that mean I won’t continue watching it? Nope, I am HOOKED.

Dynasty (Season 3)

I CANNOT wait and Liam better be alive and well.

BoJack Horseman (Season 6)

I am going to be so sad when it ends, but it will be beautiful and I just know it.

What are you watching? Did you see anything you liked on this list? Let’s chat!

What I’ve Been (Binge-)Watching #20

The week I had was crazy – great, but still crazy. So, once again, I just did not have the time to post anything, however, I was smart enough to download some Netflix shows and movies for the 15 odd hours I spent on the train going through most of Germany (for work).

The Politician

This show might just be my new favourite thing of the moment! I was kind of hesitant, because despite me loving the cast, I am not big on political plotlines, but I LOVED IT! The characters are completely morally ambiguous, they do horrendous things but you still sort of root for some of them. The question of whether you have to be a good person on the inside, or if it’s enough to do good deeds on the outside still haunts me. Not going to lie, it all takes a bit of getting used to and often takes it just that tiny bit too far, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Still, I feel like it’s going to be a polarising show and probably for a good reason (just thinking about the end of the first episode has me worried), but in my head I was chanting “SEASON 2, SEASON 2, SEASON 2” when the final episode finished.

A point I feel like is worth mentioning is that I adore the theme song and the opening of the show. I haven’t been so obsessed with an opening for a while, but it is beautifully done and features a Sufjan Stevens song, so I am bliss.

For fans of: politics but starting on a high school level, random musical interlopers that at least make sense as part of the story because it is not a musical, Ben Platt and Zoey Deutch

Disenchantment (Part 2)

I don’t watch a lot of animated shows and it has nothing to do with me being a snob, but sometimes I am just not feeling the characters or the art style and the only thing that really touched me was BoJack Horseman, but I was curious after the end of the last part of Disenchantment. This follow up gave us some interesting developments, but in the end, left the viewer pretty much at the same spot as the last season finale. I also wasn’t feeling our trio as much as in the first part, because they weren’t together all that much, or at least it felt that way to me.

Anyway, it’s still funny, but I might just recommend binging this show when all the parts are released, because the wait is pretty annoying with the cliffhangers and all.

For fans of: Disenchantment Part 1, animated shows for adults, dark and dirty humour, not necessarily being politically correct and that being the joke, demons with a heart

Falling Inn Love

Sometimes I don’t want to have to think too much when I watch a movie and that’s when stuff like Falling Inn Love comes in really handy. I don’t care about plotholes or inaccuracies, all I want is some sizzling chemistry between the leads and a romance to root for. Falling Inn Love gave me that and also a place where community still means something and people help each other out. If that film doesn’t make you want to move to the New Zealand countryside, then I don’t even know

For fans of: generic romance movies, people with a New Zealand accent, not too much accuracy about how visa and travel restrictions work, that guy who was once a contestant on the show in UnReal

Home Again

I have actually talked about this movie before, but I have absolutely zero regrets watching it all over again. Just like last time, I basically sat there with a huge grin the entirety of the movie and just enjoyed Reese getting to let loose with a chaotic trio of emotional support boys. I swear, if three strangers wanted to move in with me, become my best friends and help me with all the struggles of daily life, they’d be welcome here!

Also, an aspect that I still love about this flick is that it has a lot to do with old Hollywood and the film industry. That’s not really part of the trailer, but it is something that really makes the movie click with me.

For fans of: love, family, friendship, all the warm feelings, a touch of glam Hollywood hidden in the tale

Room

Yes, I had not, in fact, seen this movie before yesterday. I always wanted to, because it looked very intriguing, but it also had major sad vibes and I had to be in the right mood for it. I obviously also knew that the performances were great, or there wouldn’t have been such a buzz around Brie and Jacob at the time, but I was still blown away by their portrayal of the characters.

I am not sure I could handle this in book-format, but the movie already made me cry and I don’t think I need to experience that in an even more in depth way. Room just felt so raw, authentic and real and with some of the actual cases of abducted women that have surfaced in the past, I never really thought about the story being told from a kid’s point of view.

There was one scene where a TV host interviewed Joy (Brie Larson) and she asked some really nasty questions and that’s when I just lost it and the tears didn’t stop rolling until the very end of the film. This sure is some emotional stuff!

For fans of: sadness, brilliant performances, deep character studies, POV of children

Have you watched any of the shows/movies mentioned above? Do you want to? Let’s talk!

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Sept 16-22)

I wish I had more time to post things inbetween the trailer posts, but honestly, I am just euphoric about every minute of free time that I have at the moment, so that I don’t really plan much for those rare moments other than rest. But I still manage these weekly trailer round-ups, which I am super glad about to be honest. But I think, by the end of the year, I will have to see where this blog is going and if it sustainable next to my work load.

Movies

The Secret Garden

I loved the movie from the 90s and know that the garden isn’t supposed to be actual magic, but I will wait and see until I can watch the whole movie to judge it.

The Warrior Queen of Jhansi

She looks really badass!

Ordinary Love

This is a different Liam Neeson for once.

Dark Waters

I bet it’s a great movie that a lot of people are gonna ignore again.

The Wave

I don’t understand what’s happening, but I thought it was going to be a remake of the book/movie about peer pressure, which it’s not.

The Rhythm Section

Blake just looks so different now.

In the Shadow of the Moon

Watch it be something supernatural in the end?

Clemency

I don’t think this is my kind of movie.

In the Tall Grass

Do you want to be scared of grass? This is the story for you!

TV Shows

Raising Dion

I AM 100% IN!!!

Living with Yourself

Awe, Paul Rudd vs. himself. Could be interesting?

Dickinson

I am going to go so broke with all these new streaming services.

Daybreak

Well, this is at least a different take on the apocalypse.

Sorry for Your Loss (Season 2)

I HAVE WAITED SO LONG FOR THIS! Give me all the grief and sadness-mess again.

Baby (Season 2)

Still one of the more underrated international shows on Netflix.

Peaky Blinders (Season 5)

I know, I know … it’s already on BBC, but early October it will also be available for binging on Netflix!

Grey’s Anatomy (Season 16)

Do you ever just wonder why this show is still on air?

Will you be tuning in to any of the shows? Will you be watching some of the movies? Let’s chat!

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Sep 9-15)

I know I keep repeating myself, but it’s been yet another busy week. I was really glad to have this Sunday just all to myself with a chance to sleep in and then just go watch a movie in the theater that’s nearby where I live. But something went wrong at the projection, because they didn’t show any trailers beforehand, so I am all the happier to share some new ones here today.

Movies

Radioactive

I have seen this movie and really, really loved it. I also know a couple people who were immensely bored. I suppose it is not for everyone and maybe more on the romantic side than you’d expect. They also showed the repercussions of her discovery in really fascinating ways.

Like a Boss

Do I think this is gonna be extremely dumb? Heck yeah. Will I watch it anyway? For sure.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Yes, yes, I am into this kind of movie.

Scarborough

If this is what I think it is, then I pity the woman for kinda getting into that situation twice.

Last Christmas

I preferred the first trailer and I feel like they just did this to “prove” he interacts with other humans, but he doesn’t. Just because someone says they like someone for another person, doesn’t mean they met them.

Midway

Somehow I just don’t like the way this looks and I don’t know why.

TV Shows

Looking for Alaska

Not gonna lie, this looks really good so far.

See

So, Jason Momoa raises kiddos for 20 years and doesn’t age a day? I buy it.

Modern Love

I think this could be really good, but I don’t know yet.

Limetown

It looks so creepy, but Facebook Watch is stepping up their game.

Legacies (Season 2)

EXCUSE ME!? Josie and Landon is just … not what I expected at all. I guess they’d be the two teens who’d miss her the most if they could remember her, but Hope was pretty close with Raph too … I don’t know what to think at all. I prefer Hosie as a ship …

Baby (Season 2)

Yay! I’ve been waiting for this hidden Italian gem to continue.

The Good Doctor (Season 3)

To be real, I did not expect this show to last this long.

Riverdale (Season 4)

I have stopped somewhere in S3 because I just couldn’t take it anymore …

Will you be tuning in to any of the shows or check out some of the movies? Let me know in the comments!

What I’ve Been (Binge-)Watching #19

I have caught up on so many of my shows, that I feel like I really need to share this update on what I’ve been watching with you. I only did two of them last month and usually I can get in up to four posts. I need to start early in September to get my watching-game back on (seen as reading is still on a low).

Elite (Season 2)

It took me forever to watch the first season, but not Season 2! It was released and I watched it all that day, but it really wasn’t enough. I can’t say that I remembered everything from the previous storyline, but I could easily find my way back into it all.

Everything I really want to talk about is a spoiler, so I am trying to think really hard about what I can tell you all. My thing with this show was always that I didn’t really care about the investigations and crimes at all. It was more the gossipy/relationship stuff that I was into, so I was thriving on my Guzman-Nadia-ship this season. I also liked the addition of Valerio, which I guess could be controversial, but I hope to see him next season and mend his friendship with Nadia.

There were other ships that I was a bit disappointed in this time around, because I either didn’t feel them at all, or they had drastically changed in their dynamic and I didn’t know what to root for anymore. Overall, I had the best of times though and wish I didn’t already know that I’ll have to wait another eternity for the story to continue.

For fans of: Spanish Gossip Girl with a murder mystery/other criminal investigation thrown in

Carnival Row

I surprisingly really enjoyed this show! It’s not that I was shocked in general, because the topic and aesthetic is very much something that I would go for, especially with such a high production value. It’s just that from the get go, I didn’t really buy into the Cara Delevigne-Orlando Bloom-romance and they were banking heavily on that. Even in the end, I am not 100% on board with that ship. I buy it more from Orlando than Cara, but maybe it’s just because I don’t love her as an actress.

Anyway, the show has some really familiar themes, but presents them nicely. I personally wasn’t surprised by any of the larger revelations and only didn’t pick up on minor details. It was woven together nicely and could probably have ended as a limited series, hadn’t they upped the political issues towards the end and already announced a second season prior to the release of this one.

I would watch more of the story! My only complaint was that the scenes were sometimes really dark and I don’t mean in terms of story (although people were ripped to shreds by a weird creature), but more about the light situation. It was literally a very dark screen for me where I couldn’t make out much at times.

For fans of: fairies, pucks and other creatures, old-timey vibes, fantasy take on classicism and racism as societal issues

Stranger Things (Season 3)

I was so late to the party this time around and I don’t really know why. Last season, I stayed up till midnight (because I was in Canada and could watch the midnight release) and then just binged the whole season. But somehow I just wasn’t feeling it for this one and I had to really sit down and wait for the right mood to strike me – which eventually came!

It’s not my favourite season, but I did like that they managed to branch out some relationships, while also keeping the group close-knit. I am especially glad of the addition of Robin to the crew, because I adore her and think it’s great that Steve now also has a female platonic friend who isn’t his ex. I am also happy to announce that I will be dressing up as Robin for Halloween, the costume has already arrived and I just need to get shoes now (never been ready this early before!).

As per usual, the show keeps you guessing if some character deaths were really permanent. I am hoping not, but then they are also very adamant on some people staying dead … sooo, you never really know? I just hope they make more, because I enjoy watching those kiddos grow up and grow into themselves.

For fans of: American summers in the 80s, conspiracy theories, general Stranger Things madness, The Neverending Story song

13 Reasons Why (Season 3)

Not going to lie, I didn’t dislike the show when it first started. I did a really long post (which you can read here) on why you should or should not watch this show, because let’s face it – it is not meant for everyone! I cannot stress this point enough. This show depicts things I never wanted to see, yet now those images are branded into my mind and I don’t want to imagine what it would do to people who have experienced trauma similar to it themselves. It’s not easy and it’s not worth risking your mental health! It’s just TV. And the thing is, I do believe that it opens the eyes for some people who have been ignorant to the topics, but I am totally going off course.

Over the seasons, 13 Reasons Why has lost its reasons to still exist. Basically, Season 3 was entirely dedicated to humanising Bryce Walker, something none of us asked for and none of us needed. There were some really amazing emotional scenes and Tyler was a breakout character, especially seen as I hadn’t been much of a fan previously, but other than that I mostly just kept shaking my head. (Zach Dempsey is still ma boy though …) The content is all over the place. I was massively annoyed with the new narrator and 90% of the decisions the characters made.

Sometimes characters don’t need redemption. Sometimes we need to let the bad guy be the bad guy in the given scenario. Do I know that it isn’t all black and white and that change is possible? Of course, but that doesn’t mean that I want to watch a whole season of a show that makes me try to like someone I really, really don’t want to like.

Anyway, they got renewed for a season 4 and that should be the final one and I will probably still watch it. There were less graphic scenes this time and I heard that they removed sensible scenes from previous seasons, so at least they are learning in that regard.

For fans of: self-torture because why am I doing this to myself every season?

Paradise Hills

I am still surprised this movie isn’t based on a book, because it feels like a YA dystopian novel more than anything. Depending on how many movies you watch and books you read, you will either think that Paradise Hills is really original or predictable. I quite enjoyed it overall and especially liked the aesthetics. If I am not mistaken, the director previously did perfume commercials, so she knows how to make something look pleasing to the eye.

There were a couple turns towards the end of the story, where they kind of lost me a little bit. I felt like they were trying to cram too many genres into it at once and lost the message on the way. I am not saying that I disliked it, but it wasn’t sure if it wanted to be sci-fi, dystopian or add magic after all. I think I just would have preferred it if the magical element had been left out. Still a nice watch though!

For fans of: aesthetically pleasing movies, large female casts, dystopian movies, weird twists that don’t necessarily make sense

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Sept 2-8)

Don’t worry, I know it’s Sunday, so I won’t deprive you of the weekly trailer update. I just really had to get that monthly wrap-up done and I didn’t want to post-pone it until after yet another trailer post. Anyway, here is what I found!

Movies

Waves

How dare a trailer be this beautiful!? It’s like Eurphoria meets This Is Us and I am not just saying that because of various actors in it.

Bad Boys for Life

Sometimes I am not even that mad about them reviving franchises …

Jojo Rabbit

Why do I love the look of this so much!? The topic is ludicrous, but I trust Taika.

Between Two Ferns: the Movie

I did not expect to find this as funny as I did and yes, I am unfamiliar with the web series this is based on.

Just Mercy

This is sure going to be intense.

TV Shows

World on Fire

Not enough Brian in this trailer, but I will watch this for sure!

Criminal

Let’s be real, it has David Tennant in it, so it will be a success.

Catherine the Great

I may have accidentally put this in the movie category last time?

Bluff City Law

When will NBC learn!? If their Chicago law series didn’t work, then how is this one supposed to?

Disenchantment (Season 2)

I could just scream “Elfoooo” again, like last week.

The Good Place (Season 4)

I am so going to cry when this show ends.

What did you think? Did you see anything you liked? Let’s chat!

August 2019 Wrap-Up

This post is so long overdue, but I’ve just been super busy and haven’t really been able to do much blogging in the past weeks (which you probably noticed due to the lack of activity on my part). However, I do think that August went a lot better overall. I started strong, but then it just sort of fizzled out again. I am now on one of those very long train rides again and hopefully, if the wifi doesn’t crap out on me, I will be able to do this post … hence, if you’re reading this, all went well.

In August, I read a lot more than in previous months. At least, that’s what it felt like, even if page counts would probably tell you otherwise. First of all, I tried audiobooks for the first time in my blogging career. It could have gone considerably better, but now I know what I am talking about when I say that they aren’t for me.

I also read a lovely novella by Taylor Jenkins Reid, who only just about everyone in the community seems to adore. That felt like a really good palette cleanser and I thought I had gotten back my reading spirits, but alas, life through me another curve ball. Time really wasn’t an easy commodity to come by, so I went for an easy route – comics! Seen as Disney introduced a whole lot of their upcoming content, among them the Eternals, I felt it was my duty to read up on them. There’s some really cool content there, but I also am intrigued by the fact that some characters seem to be gender swapped and that the ages have also been changed quite a bit. The casting is high quality for sure, so I cannot wait to see which story they are going to with.

These are the volumes I have read (so not the Neil Gaiman ones) and you can check them out on Goodreads by clicking on the covers:

Eternals: To Slay A God: v. 1 (Eternals (2008-2009))   Eternals: Manifest Destiny

What else is new? I’ve been working a lot, so I didn’t really put in the necessary time to go looking for a new job. I still want to say thank you to all of you who keep inquiring and sending me job advertisements that reminded them of me. It’s much appreciated and I so very much love the gesture, even if I don’t end up applying for all of them. I wish there was more to tell, but I am not sure where to start?

When I am not at work, I’ve been trying really hard to get out of the house and just DO stuff more often. Sometimes I am successful at that and I have had a great time at several movie premieres and open air concerts and such in the last couple of weeks, but in the end they are never so much about meeting anyone new. That’s still something I don’t really know how to do exactly.

THINGS I LIKED THIS MONTH

I suppose at some point I had to stop talking about The Rook, so I reluctantly did. Instead, I switched to bombarding everyone with tweets about Four Weddings and a Funeral (the TV show), because it is really, really lovely. Mindy Kaling hits home with me about 80% of the time and I enjoy the content she creates for us and she was heavily involved in the making of this show. It’s super sweet, heart-warming but also heart-breaking. It’s square in the old-school RomCom genre but with far more diversity. I just loved it so, so very much, even if it was heavily predictable at times, because it was so reminiscent of all the things I used to love but that don’t get produced the same way these days anymore. It’s proof that you can still make these silly romances but keep them up to date. And for real, the most unrealistic part about the show isn’t that everyone meets their ideal love interest, but rather that these people seem to work and live in different countries on a whim without having to go through mountains of paperwork, visa and work regulations …

Also, if you are a Duffy – hit me up! I’d like 100% date someone like him and I am not really a Maya at all, so no heart breaking from me. Words I have spoken: “That stupid dork is like my ideal guy”

MY POSTS

TV SHOW/MOVIE RELATED

TRAILER POSTS

How was your month? Was summer as busy for you as it was for me? Let’s chat a little bit!

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Aug 26-Sept 1)

Unintentionally, this was another week without any posts inbetween the trailer posts. However, after doing the wrap-up, I have some ideas for posts … should I finally finish the books I am reading. It’s a slow process … anyway, here are this week’s trailers!

Movies

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

I am not one for theories, but I am hyped for sure.

Joker

If this movie isn’t brilliant, then I am going to be so disappointed.

The Aeronauts

I believe this will look beautifully on the big screen.

The King

I am the kind of trash who would watch this for Chalamet alone, but it looks cool too. So, that’s a plus.

The Wedding Year

I am honestly surprised there aren’t more wedding season movies out there.

Lucy in the Sky

I still like the look of this so much.

Sometimes Always Never

The Doctor Who themed toothbrushes … I can’t.

The Laundromat

I love that Netflix just spends money on high class actors these days.

The Spy

Sacha in serious is always unusual for me.

Miss Virginia

I like these kinds of movies. I find them inspiring.

The Two Popes

Okay, I did not know they made a movie about the most recent popes.

Semper Fi

Is Nat Wolff just in a bunch of military movies now?

TV Shows

Dickinson

Well, okay! This has been updated.

The New Pope

I am so confused, but I also never watched The Young Pope …

Tall Girl

I actually had a really, really tall girl in High School in the US too, but maybe not that tall?

Skylines

It will never get tiring that I know some of the people in these German shows.

Briarpatch

This looks like it would be cool, but kinda niche.

Top Boy

So yeah, Netflix revived this I guess.

The I-Land

I liked the other trailer better, where we didn’t see as much.

This Is Us (Season 4)

Excuse me!? Is that Jennifer Morrison!?

Jack Whitehall: Travels with my Father (Season 3)

I am probably going to watch this again.

Disenchantment (Part 2)

Elfooooo!

Did you see anything you liked? Are you going to watch any of the titles mentioned? Let’s talk!
