As quickly as I devoured Dear Evan Hansen, I returned to mostly watching TV shows just as fast. I am sure another book will come along and grab my attention, but first, here are the things I’ve been watching lately!
This show was super cute but also emotional in many ways. I like the way they went about this, as it didn’t feel like your typical superhero origin story and showed how difficult it is if you have a young kid with powers. I also loved how this wasn’t just about his powers, but also very much about family. The twists at the end of the season just were the cherry on top.
I’d 100% watch another season! The only thing I’d have to criticize is that the kid who played Dion was super cute to watch, but definitely struggled with imagining what his powers ultimately did. I, in absolutely no way, want to imply that it’s easy to act (especially at that age) with something invisible, but sometimes the movements and animation were just majorly … off? They could have at least tried to match him more, even if it would have been more erratic, in post-production.
For fans of: original superhero tales, kid-focused stories with adult themes, representation
Baby (Season 2)
If I could have a Netflix crossover with Elite, I would want that show to be Baby. In my head it’s definitely the same kind of format, just switching the murder mystery with underage girls acting as hookers (and it’s obviously Italian and not Spanish – but they did a Youtube video together and it was hilarious). I am pretty sure this isn’t a show everyone can see themselves in, but it still has a binge-worthy quality to it. You just need to give it an episode or two.
I honestly couldn’t tell you too much about the first season anymore at this point, but to me, the second season felt a lot more focused and compact. Maybe these characters are growing and learning to some extent, but it sure doesn’t feel like for most of them. There’s honestly some truly disturbing individuals here and especially the homophobic bullying that’s going on is hard to stomach. Beware of that!
For fans of: female empowerment through sex, high school drama multiplied
The Man in the High Castle (Season 1)
Not sure how many of you remember this from my time in Vancouver, but I was actually on set of this show once or twice. It hit me quite hard seeing swastikas on people in real life and I felt very down after that set visit. It’s not that I thought it was a bad show, but I didn’t want to feel sad all the time, so I didn’t really feel like watching it back then.
Now the show is coming to an end and I am into it all deep. I am a couple episodes into season 2 already, but like the slow build up and the mystery of it all. I don’t want to spoiler anything, but I just want to say that my love Frank Frink deserves so much better than Juliana and I will stand by that!
For fans of: alternate history shows, sci-fi twists
The Hook Up Plan/Plan Coeur (Season 2)
If you ever need a silly show that probably focuses on the importance of romance in ones life a little bit too much, but you don’t really want to think about it and just watch something fun – this show is perfect! Last season sort of ended on a cliffhanger, but I believe that season 2 ended perfectly. I don’t say this very often, but I hope it’s not getting another season. I wouldn’t know what they would want to tell us, because everything important has happened or has been resolved and another season would just mean unnecessary drama.
For fans of: silly over the top romance, crazy but strong friendships
Charmed (Season 1-2)
I already talked about my issues with the reboot of Charmed in my monthly wrap-up. However, I am absolutely and positively obsessed with this show! The second season got an overhaul with new showrunners and a much more edgy and cinematic look. I was worried when I first heard they wanted to focus more on the supernatural aspect and less on the family, but two episodes into the new season and it looks like whatever they changed was the best decision they could have made!
They stepped away from trying to reinvent the OG Charmed and now really make it feel like they are doing their own spin on things. In a way, and I am not going to spoil what happens, it’s a reboot within the reboot and I am 100% here for it. Also, my ship is thriving and that’s really all a girl like myself could ask for (aside from a job at the show, but let’s not get greedy).
For fans of: witches!!!
I did the total fangirl thing and ignored all my responsibilities to do a video edit of my ship. Please ignore my lack of storyline or editing skills and enjoy my random acts of trying to be creative for no good reason:
