Something about time is just not consistent this year. Whereas the first couple months felt like years, April was gone in the blink of an eye. I guess we all got used to our current situations and that way it didn’t feel so endless? I don’t know … it’s just a working theory. Either way, April still gave me plenty of time to get back into my reading groove and I’m now halfway through my Goodreads challenge, which makes me super happy!
- Again, but Better by Christine Riccio (3 stars)
- Aphrodite Made Me Do It by Trista Mateer (5 stars)
This is a beautiful and very personal poetry collection, where the poet talks to the Goddess Aphrodite about trauma and love and societal expectations and I adored it. It felt very intimate and I marked so many passages, but I don’t know how to review poetry really other than saying “THIS MADE ME FEEL SOMETHING”, so that’s why you didn’t hear much about it from me. - Deadpool Issue #20 (5 stars)
You can read this issue for free here. Trigger warning for suicide! - Only Human by Sylvain Neuvel (3 stars)
As per usual, click on the covers to get re-directed to Goodreads, where you are always welcome to add me as a reading buddy! My own reviews you’re able to find by clicking on the titles in the list above.
I went into this month thinking I could do … a lot? I soon realised that even if I was motivated, there were definite limitations. The more I wanted to do, the less I actually did and so I focused on a couple things. I started working out on the daily and have missed maybe one or two days this last month. I don’t do hours upon hours of workout, but I do feel better exercising a little bit and am starting (if very slowly so) to see some changes in my body.
Another thing I focused on was getting back into writing. I initially wanted to continue working on the #witchyWIP for Camp NaNoWriMo, but ended up not feeling it anymore. Instead, I started a completely new project where I have recently hit 12K words. It’s a YA contemporary story with a slight focus on Football, but also family drama and just all sorts of relationships (go friendships!). There is no pitchable blurb yet and I feel different about this project. You know me, I usually blab about my projects all day long, but somehow I feel like keeping this one close to my chest … at least for now.
Having been more into writing taught me that I cannot consume a lot of other media (books and TV and movies) or it will hinder my own creativity. I tend to get lost in all those fictional worlds and when that happens, it’s really hard to pull myself out of it and work on my own stuff. Which is what I want to do! So, I think all things considered, I did fairly well with posts and reviews, even though I felt I couldn’t read/watch as much as I sometimes wanted to.
However, something I tried to do more again to not get out of practice entirely is draw. When I have to pick my own reference pic, I will spend hours without getting anywhere, because I am super indecisive. Instead, I turned to my friends on Twitter and asked for characters they wanted to have drawn. If you have Twitter as well, feel free to comment with a pic of your fave. I won’t promise to draw anything, but I am trying to make it a more regular occasion and will turn to this pinned tweet for inspo!
The drawing I most enjoyed doing so far was of Melonie Diaz as Mel Vera from the Charmed Reboot!
But I am slowly but surely running out of watercolor paper (it’s ordered, but will take some time. I only have THREE pieces of paper left), which made me turn to practicing pencil drawings as well. Here is a grumpy Nick Miller from New Girl.
MY FAVOURITE THINGS
In turns of media consumption my two favourite things are very easy to identify as Friday Night Lights and the movie The Half of It! However, I talked about FNL at length in a separate post and do intend to talk about The Half of It in an upcoming one. So, instead, let’s check out some awesome content around the blogosphere:
- Sophie @Me and Ink talked about some deliciously morally grey characters and I was all here for it!
- Marie @Drizzle and Hurricane Books gave us an insight as to how to deal with a blogging slump. Let’s face it, it has happened to all of us at some point …
- I really loved this look at Season 3 of Elite and what’s ahead over @MettelRay
- The Orang-Utan Librarian had some quarrels with the adaptation of The Noughts and Crosses book series to screen (despite my dear Josh Dylan being in it).
- My good friend Lois @My Midnight Musings does not just have a new layout on her blog, she was also completely smitten by The Kiss Quotient last month and did a great review on it.
- Sophie Li and Jai Lynn both took it upon them to take part in my newly created Quarantine Write Tag! Check out their posts and stories – they are awesome!

This is it from me! I hope you had a good start into the month of May! I also hope you are staying safe and healthy. Take care of yourselves and be responsible <3!
12K words!!! Get you. Football and lovable darlings has really got your creative juices flowing. I love it.
I so get you about not being able to consume other media when being focused on something specific. It’s why I’m continuously struggling between needing to finish one thing and wanting to start another haha. Now, I didn’t know Deadpool #20 was available to read for free.
Thank you so much for sharing my review and your constant support in all my ramblings and ranting. You are a star. ❤

I know that there are way faster writers than me, but I am really happy with my progress! There’s still so far to go though haha
I hear you … I juggle my time between far too many things and it’s not always working.
Someone shared the Deadpool issue on Facebook and I thought why not share it here too? It’s a special issue, so I thought it would make sense.
Of course!! You are my head cheerleader, and I am just returning the favor sometimes ❤

Glad to hear your writing project is going well. BTW, when you say football, you don’t mean the American version, right? You mean what we call soccer because we’re weird here, right?
LikeLike
Thanks, but nope. I mean American Football, which I also call Football, because we don’t have a German word for it. So we have Football and Fußball (your soccer).

Omg you are such a talented artist!! Your drawings are amazing ❤ Congrats on hitting the 12K mark as well for your writing project, keep going strong!! Writing is so hard, but you got a nice streak going. Your Quarantine Tag was fun to do, and thanks for linking back to my blog. It helped me to get into my characters heads' better for my own WIP. Sending good vibes your way 😀

Thank you so much! I have had a bit more time to practice during lockdown, but I’ve generally been very pleased with my progress as an artist this past year 🙂
Also, I am so happy to hear that the Quarantine Tag helped you with your own WIP! I fully intend to check out and comment on your post in detail, because I only skimmed it, but the Spongebob gifs were already really promising haha
Have a great May!

I have seen Aphrodite Made Me Do It on Goodreads and I must admit that cover was that first got my attention. Once I saw it was poetry I was hesitant, because I’m not a big poetry reader (though I would love to be) and after some failures for me with some modern populars (like Milk and Honey which didn’t work for me) I was doubting even more. After seeing that you liked it I’m less afraid to read it haha!

Aphrodite Made Me Do It is definitely a very intimate look at the poet’s life more than anything else, but I loved it. I haven’t read Milk and Honey, but I could tell you some poetry books I have enjoyed? Maybe that way you could determine if poetry stuff just isn’t for you or if maybe one of those spoke to you as well? I really loved Love Her Wild by Atticus, The Princess Saves Herself in This One is on my shelf too, but I very much like Edgar Allen Poe and e.e. cummings.

Hi Kat! That’s awesome that you are exercising everyday! It sure takes a lot of motivation and determination to keep up with the routine.
Great job hitting 12K on your new WIP! Looking forward to hearing more about it 🙂 When I’m focused on writing, I also find it hard to get into other media like books. I feel like my brain is filled with my own story and characters and that it’s hard to emotionally invest in another story. On the other hand, I’ve also experienced the reverse where I’m hooked on a book series and I don’t feel like working on my own novel haha :’)
Thanks for linking my post! I had a great time doing your tag. Have a great month of May!

I am really “only” doing 10-20 minute workouts, so i know there is much more challenging stuff out there, but I feel changes coming, so it does what it’s supposed to haha
I think my problem with other books while writing is that I don’t see the appeal as much in comparison to my own world, whereas with TV shows, I get sucked in completely and forget all about my own creation haha
Have a great May, Sophie!

That’s great that you feel changes with your workout routine! 10-20min a day still takes a lot of dedication.
Haha I agree that TV shows can be addictive 🙂

Time is honestly being so weird right now 😱 I’m happy to hear that you were reading and writing so much! I’m definitely curious about your new WIP and I hope that everything is going well with it! 🥰 I really have to brainstorm a new idea as well, once my revision is somewhat finished 😄

Thanks so much, Caro! I don’t feel like sharing yet, but I will eventually … at least I think so haha
do you already have an idea which genre you’d like to write in next?

I’m definitely looking forward to it 🥰 It will be a high fantasy story, as it’s my fave genre 😊

Cool! I like contemporary fantasy best, but somehow I only seem capable of writing non-fantasy books haha

Time is certainly being strange this year !! And you saying I wanted to do everything which made me do less is a mood. I’m always determined to be productive but then it doesn’t work and I just want to curl up in a ball. Focusing on only a couple of things is much better !!
I’m glad to hear you have some writing motivation and I wish you the best of luck. I always struggle to balance writing with everything and I’ve never do it well. I pick writing intently for a week then get into something else . 😅
Your art is awesome !! So good and I love the Nick one, the expression and everything 😍
Thank you so much for sharing my post. I’m so glad you enjoyed it 💛💛 I hope you have an awesome May !!

I always plan too much and that procrastinate the day away by doing none of the above haha
I wish my writing spirits were just a tiiiiny bit more consistent as well, but I am really proud of the progress so far. Fingers crossed that I will see it through to the end.
I am really happy to hear you like my drawings ❤ thanks a lot!

I’m so happy that your reading grove is back, that’s so good and I am even more excited about your writing project and your excitment about this story, too. I really can’t wait to see it grow and for you to fall even more in love with it as you write 🙂
That Nick Miller drawing is PERFECT. I love it so, so much ❤
I hope May will be kind and wonderful to you, Kat, always. ❤
