It’s Thursday and I’m back with a new Thursday Movie Picks feature post. This series is hosted by Wandering through the Shelves and offers you a weekly prompt to post some movie recommendations/talking points according to the theme. Usually, you are supposed to post about 3-5 examples, which I find a very manageable amount.
This week, as we’re nearing Christmas at an unstoppable pace, it’s all about Holiday Parties! Of course, a holiday party doesn’t necessarily have to be about Christmas though, because there’s many more celebrations out there. Let’s see what I can come up with!
Holidate
This movie is literally about two people forming an arrangement to be each other’s +1 to various holiday parties, because they’re tired of the pressure of bringing people or dating during the holidays in general. It’s not the best movie out there, but it’s enjoyable enough.
Happiest Season
This might be my favorite queer Christmas movie (and I’m saying that, not having watched Single All the Way yet). Kristen Stewart didn’t feel as misplaced or awkward here and I really liked the movie. The parents are throwing a rather huge Christmas party, so I figured it would fit the theme.
Last Christmas
I don’t want to spoil this movie for anyone, but I have fond memories of it, because I got to go to a special advanced screening with Emilia Clarke and the director, got a branded advent calendar and a green Santa hat. I had a great time. In the movie, they’re also doing a huge event for charity, which isn’t exactly the same as a party, but I’ll just use it as such anyway.
We match on Happiest Season! The trailer for Last Christmas essentially spoiled everything. I wish it was a better movie, but I loved the two leads so much. Clarke is such a joy.

Really? A lot of people I know who watched the trailer and then the full movie Last Christmas had no idea that the things that were going to happen would happen. I was like “they’re going to take the song literally, aren’t they?” and guessed it. But I still knew a lot of clueless people haha

I didn’t see the trailer so I wasn’t spoiled. I also didn’t guess it from the title. I just thought they chose it because since they were using a bunch of George Michaels songs in the movie and that is his most famous Christmas song.

Happiest Season was such a fun movie to watch, I was actually shipping Aubrey Plaza and Kristen Stewart’s characters by the end hahaha. Happy holidays! 😊

I love these pics. I was a bit let down by Holidate but I enjoyed Happiest Season and Last Christmas (despite it being quite predictable). Happy holidays!

I can understand that! Holidate was not Netflix’ best effort.

My pick is also the best Christmas movie ever made: Die Hard. And my God, I can’t wait to watch it tomorrow night with some sushi on the side.

Some others picked it as well haha I swear to you, I’ve lived more than a decade of my life not considering this a Christmas movie whatsoever haha but I’m not trying to debate. It just never felt that prominently festive haha you can literally watch it at any time during the year.

You can technically say that about any movie associated with a holiday though, can’t you?

You can, but Die Hard doesn’t feel out of place. If I were to watch Klaus, my favorite and the absolute best Christmas movie in existence, outside of December, it would just feel WRONG!

I’ll take your word for it. Anyway, happy holidays! Hope things are fun on your end despite the pandemic.
