My Top 10 New TV Shows of 2021

My endless lists and rankings are coming to a close for 2021 with the topic I usually leave for the final day – new TV shows! Other than with the books and movies, the show actually has to be released in 2021 for the first time to qualify. I didn’t struggle with my picks as much as I thought I would though? Usually, I have a hard time narrowing it down to 20, but here we are … let’s check out my picks!

10. Panic

I needed one of my silly teen book adaptation shows to be on here and I remembered liking this so much more than the book. I just sat there, watching it all in a day and calling every single character an idiot. Yet, I also heavily shipped Ray and Heather. Sometimes my shipping brain just wins out.

9. Invincible

Albeit this is far more violent than I like, Invincible was a great take on the whole superhero genre. I still haven’t read the comics myself, but I hear there’s still plenty of amazing material they’ll be able to capture with future seasons and I’d be here for it.

8. Midnight Mass

Not my favorite Flanagan show, but he just knows how to do horror in a way that I don’t want to hide under my blanket afraid of what’s being shown on screen or being scared of going to bed afterwards. I’m a massive scaredy cat, but Flanagan chooses his cast so well, they all embody their characters perfectly and keep me wanting more.

7. Only Murders in the Building

I was surprised by how much I loved this, because I’m neither into podcasts nor true crime stories, but this worked so well for me. It was hilarious and full of twists and turns. I adored it.

6. Shadow & Bone

Look, I wrote a whole freaking breakdown of this show, which you can read here, but I enjoyed myself a lot. The casting is amazing and has me out there liking characters more than I did in the books. Not all aspects mash well together and I already know there’s going to be Darkling drama in the fandom, but as a reader of all the books, I was pleased. Now give me my Nikolai and Wylan casting announcement!

5. WandaVision

As I mentioned in the post about my top movies, I gave myself permission to mention *ONE* (1) Marvel property and I went with WandaVision. It was the first Disney+ show and it was aesthetically pleasing, engaging in terms of story and actually gave characters a lot of depth that many did not care about before. I always loved Wanda and even really liked Age of Ultron, but people are just discovering it now.

If you are curious about my ranking of all the MCU content from 2021, you can find a separate ranking here.

4. Starstruck

This show flew under so many people’s radar, but it deserves so much more attention. Not just is it hilarious, it’s like someone brought to life a work of self-insert fan fiction about wanting to hook up with an actor. I love it. I absolutely cannot wait for what they’ll do next season, because this one was too short and I rewatched it several times.

3. The Sex Lives of College Girls

I was caught off guard by just how much I liked this show. I thought the humor was going to be hit or miss with me and I was going to cringe my way through some interactions (which still happened), but I actually rooted for so many characters and was invested in their stories. I’m really glad to know there’ll be another season, because I need to know how they’re all doing (also, I need Bela and Eric to be a thing).

2. The Big Leap

THIS SHOW! I laughed, I cried, I was hopeful, I was sad. There’s no news on whether the show will be continued or not and I have a bad feeling about it, but let me tell you, I loved it with every fiber of my being. There’s just so much heart in it!

1. The Wheel of Time

The Wheel of Time deviated quite a bit from the books, but … let’s be real, I do not care. I ADORE this show and the characters. I watched the first episode and I was just in. They had me body and soul. I do, however, very much suggest that the producers and the studio listen to Rafe. He said he wanted 10 episodes plus a 2-hour-pilot and he should have gotten it. There were a lot of rushed elements that could have been easily remedied if he didn’t get 8 episodes in total. Still, I am really optimistic for Season 2.

(Although, part of me will forever have to wonder what happened with Barney Harris and why he left the show so suddenly … it’s plaguing my mind.)

Honorable Mentions

I do have a couple honorable mentions, although some of them are really trashy. I don’t actually care though as long as I was entertained:

  • An Astrological Guide for Broken Hearts
  • Schmigadoon
  • Pretty Smart
  • Fate
  • Superman & Lois
  • Ginny & Georgia
  • Jupiter’s Legacy (already cancelled)
  • Sweet Tooth
  • The White Lotus

That’s it! We’re all done with my rankings! Do you agree or disagree with any of my picks? Did you watch some of the shows? Let’s chat!

  2. I watched the first episode of invincible and I definitely liked the approach but then my amazon prime trial ended 😅
I have watched Starstuck, I really enjoyed it!! Fun but with an emotional depth!
I need to watch Shadow & Bone (I’m actually surprised I haven’t, maybe I am just waited for the Wylan announcement because I’m still not over him not being in s1 😂) and only murders in the building. I will have to check that out!!
My favourite new show was probably We Are LadyParts!!

    • Ahaha I get it! The free trial running out can be a pain. I do think the show is really good and I can also really recommend The Wheel of Time on Amazon Prime as well, but I understand that it might not always be in the budget.
Hahaha it totally made sense though that Wylan wasn’t in S1! It was very much a prequel to Six of Crows and it wouldn’t have made sense for him to be there 😉
Thanks for sharing your fave and commenting, Sophie!! ❤

      • I will have to get Prime again at some point and continue with it. The Wheel of Time does look good and fantasy shows can be hard to find at times so I’ll have to watch it.
haha yeah it make sense I guess 🤣 and I do love new characters as seasons go on so I look forward to that!!

  3. I’m glad Pretty Smart is getting an honorable mention, I had so much fun watching this one and hopes it will come back soon. I can’t believe I didn’t watch Panic ahaha I loved the book and completely forgot there was a show, I need to watch it eventually!

    • Pretty Smart was awesome, but also a bit silly haha I couldn’t put it in the top 10, but I enjoyed it a lot still! Unfortunately, the show’s still in the bubble, meaning it’s neither renewed nor cancelled. Fingers crossed!
Panic, on the other hand, was cancelled. I do love my trash ship though. That was great to watch, made me completely fall in love with Ray Nicholson somehow (who is the son of Jack Nicholson btw).
