Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #22

Sorry for being a day late! I was in the midst of watching things and the post would have been completely empty without me finishing those first. However, I’m now ready to talk about all the things I watched. Let’s go!

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

First Kill (Season 1)

Whichever outlet called that show a “tired take” clearly doesn’t understand the meaning of it. How much sapphic vampire/vampire hunter content did we have in the past couple of years? I’d love for someone to enlighten me.

And yes, vampires come and go in terms of being in, but who cares? I for one love stories about vampires, especially those that aren’t so much in the horror genre, but more lighthearted with a little exploration of what it means to be human/a monster. While there was some corny stuff, I thought the show was really easy to binge and I’d definitely want to know how it continues. So many loose threads.

Love, Victor (Season 3)

Kind of can’t believe that this was truly the final season, but they sure wanted to pack a lot of things into it. Every single character was in some kind of relationship drama to the point where I just thought the show was doing entirely too much. Without wanting to spoil anything, I didn’t think it was necessary to put so many of the relationships in peril, just to make stuff work out in the final episode. I would have actually loved to see some couples (if we have to follow the incessant need to pair everyone up like it’s the end of the world to be single) just have a solid relationship without hiccups.

But please don’t get me wrong! I had a lot of fun with the last season and thought that it ended on a good note for most characters. I especially enjoyed the various friendships and the parent-kid-conversations made me tear up on multiple occasions. On top of that, Rahim was once again a standout for me. I’m so glad they added the character.

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

Ms. Marvel (Season 1)

You can find a full review of the second episode here.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Season 1)

Spock and his siblings – it never it gets boring!

Roswell, New Mexico (Season 4)

I know I’m like a broken record on this, but there just wasn’t enough Maria for me. They’re letting me down when it comes to my girl.

MOVIES

As always, don’t forget to add me on Letterboxd if you want to be up to date on all my movie experiences!

The Bad Guys

No idea what it is as of late, but all the animation movies that I watch are great. Maybe this isn’t exactly on par with Encanto and Turning Red, which I’ve seriously watched way too many times at this point, but I had a really good time. It had great comedic dynamics and a nice emotional hook as well, without actually making me cry though. It reminded me a little of Zootopia meets Ocean’s Eleven or something, so that was really neat.

Did you watch any of the things I mentioned or do you plan to? Let’s talk about that!

  1. I have yet to watch Star Trek Strange New Worlds… my mum is actually watching it now 😂 but you always intrigue me to watch it when I see you talk about it. Like Spock has more siblings… I need to watch this! I’m still making my way through the Original series 😄

    • I have very surface level knowledge of the Original series, so I can’t tell how much of it has been lore from the OG stuff. I know they changed Pike and Spock a bit for these new shows and I love them, but I somehow don’t remember Spock having several siblings haha

      • From what I’ve seen, Spock has no siblings, so I definitely think, for Discovery especially since it’s all I’ve seen from the new stuff, that was lore they made up… but I loved it! I can’t wait to see what else they have created. The Original we do meet his parents though so they kept that. I’m super excited to watch everything Star Trek at some point! 😄

  2. I have always been a bit skeptical about love, victor. I think the first trailer put me off for some reason but I have heard good reviews within the book community. I should give it a go one day, maybe when I’m in the mood for a teen rom com show to binge. Glad you had fun with this last show, although a shame there wasn’t more stable couples in the plot. I truly think stable couples are too rare in media!
I am excited to check out first kill, glad you enjoyed it!

    • Hmmm, what put you off about it? Do you remember? I always thought it was a nice expansion on the universe and showing how different coming out stories can be, especially if you involve a different culture/religion.

      • I think it was a trailer where he was staring at a guy behind the coffee bar and it was like a cheesy advert. I think it was the humour they were going for but I didn’t gel. Saying that I appreciate rom-com series a lot more now and I actually have access to the show now which makes a difference.
I like how it seems to be further celebration of “everyone deserves a great love story” though. And that was one of my favourite love, Simon quotes!

    • I could see you enjoying First Kill. I didn’t that it was the best show ever, but I had a good time.
And YES! The visuals on Ms. Marvel are top notch. It’s so much fun.
