Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #37

I know it’s the last day of the month, but I’m afraid the actual September wrap-up will have to wait until Monday, which is also when I’ll go into a bit more depth on why I’ve been so busy and unable to blog. For now, let’s talk about some shows and movies I watched!

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

Heartbreak High (Season 1)

Heartbreak High on Netflix is the reboot of a very popular Australian show from the 90s and I’m here for it. I can’t speak to the original at all, as that’s not something that was airing where I lived, but I’m head over heels into this one and think it’s actually a good show for Gen Z. Someone said it’s like if Euphoria and Grand Army had a baby and it grew up in Australia, and I can totally see that?

First of all, the cast is racially diverse, not all characters/actors are neurotypical and there’s some good representation of different gender and sexual identities. Yay for non-binary main characters and an ace character as well, because we know that the latter mostly only appear in animated shows for some weird reason.
Secondly, while all the characters are deeply flawed in their own ways, they are (mostly) easy to root for and relate to. You don’t have to agree with their actions, but I found it so easy to get invested in their drama. I 100% hope that the show generates some buzz, because I NEED another season.
Lastly, the trailer doesn’t do it justice. Like … at all.

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (Season 1)

I liked this week better than the last one, just because the group session with some of Marvel’s most obscure characters was so much fun. Also, we knew Josh was shady, right?

Vampire Academy (Season 1)

I continue to be utterly in love with this show. I know it’s not perfect, but I like the cast and story a lot. It’s currently the show I’m most looking forward to each and every week and I’m going to be so sad that the first season will be over in only a couple of weeks. At least we got so much packed into the episodes already. I mean, we just met Adrian!

Tell Me Lies (Season 1)

These people continue to be highly problematic. Stephen is worse for sure, but Lucy is no angel.

Abbott Elementary (Season 2)

That cold open was everything!

Star Trek: Lower Decks (Season 3)

I weirdly don’t feel as invested this season, but it might just take a couple more episodes. I saw a clip for episode 8 or 9 and really want to know what that was about.

Call Me Kat (Season 3)

I had no idea this show was back, but I hope it’s going to be another fun season.

9-1-1 (Season 6)

They always have to traumatize someone on these shows, don’t they? I just hope Hen is going to be alright. Also, Buck, get an actual couch.

Meet Cute

I’m not the biggest fan of Pete Davidson or Kaley Cuoco, but I was looking forward to this movie. I like romcoms, I like time travel, I like a good twist – now, imagine my disappointment when I didn’t vibe with Meet Cute at all. I think some subtlety in the beginning would have gone a long way, but it started out whacky and got even more so over time. It also turned out to be rather heavy, without letting those heavy moments work or letting the viewer sit with it really.

In the end, I didn’t feel like I enjoyed myself at all. Yes, there were one or two actually cute moments, but overall, this felt rather unhealthy and I wasn’t rooting for that ending in any way. It’s a shame when a movie is a miss like that.

Did you watch anything I’ve watched? Are there some movies/shows I should check out? Let’s talk about that!

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Sep 19-25/2022)

I had so many plans for the blog this month, but none of them came to fruition. So, you’re mostly just getting your regular fill on TV, movie and trailer content. This week, we were especially blessed with teaser etc. because of Netflix’ TUDUM presentation. Let’s dive in! (As a heads up, I won’t be including clips or date announcement without any show/movie content though. I’ll just make sure to feature the proper teasers and trailers for those things once they are available.)

Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #36

There’s so much I want to do, but definitely not enough hours in the day to do it all. I’ve been on a rigorous workout schedule, I’ve been writing my Fantasy novel and just had a ton of work in general – blogging, unfortunately, took a backseat through all of this. Finding the balance is always hard, but at least I have my two posts a week that I can (hopefully) still entertain you with. Let’s check out what shows and movies I’ve been watching.

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

I haven’t finished anything, but the number of shows that are airing on a weekly basis has increased a lot.

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (Season 1)

Jen wasn’t wrong when she said that the wedding episode came at a really inopportune time during the season. That’s all I’m going to say about it.

Vampire Academy (Season 1)

Episode 5 of Vampire Academy was so freaking intense and had me on the edge of my seat. I’m truly in love with the show and I don’t know if it’s the formidable cast or me always craving vampire content, but I’m happy. If only I could binge it in one go.

Monarch (Season 1)

Very interesting choice to market Monarch with Susan Sarandon and then do … that. It’s a mix between Nashville, Empire and Dynasty, which can be entertaining, but I haven’t been completely hooked by the mystery yet. I could have done without any deaths and just the interpersonal drama.

Tell Me Lies (Season 1)

Is anyone out there rooting for Stephen and Lucy to actually be together? Because I sure as heck am not and think they’re both better off without the other one.

Abbott Elementary (Season 2)

It’s BACK and it had such a great season opener. I weirdly don’t watch that many sitcoms anymore, but Abbott Elementary has my heart and I’m rooting for this show to keep going strong.

The Cleaning Lady (Season 2)

I really enjoyed season 1 of the show, but I might possibly be in a bit of a slump with crime stuff, because I’m not as enthusiastic about it now. I’ll give it more time to get back into it though.

Star Trek: Lower Decks (Season 3)

The Rutherford storyline was the more interesting one to me, but it’s always great to see Boimler snap.

Stargirl (Season 3)

It’s so frustrating to see how slowly the ships on this progress. If this is potentially the final season, I need way more Beth and Rick interactions. Just sayin’ … We all remember this era on my insta, right?

9-1-1 (Season 6)

Me and firefighter content. The fact that the return of Station 19 is also nigh, I’m content.

MOVIES

As always, don’t forget to add me on Letterboxd if you want to be up to date on all my movie experiences!

Where the Crawdads Sing

So … I loved the book (review can be found here), but then I learned some stuff about the author and was really turned off by the whole thing. I also didn’t necessarily feel like giving the movie a platform, but I kind of adore Daisy Edgar-Jones? Long story short, I ended up watching the movie and am not too sad about the fact that it’s on the mediocre side. I think the actors all did a great job with the material they were given, but the adaptation just doesn’t work as well as the book because of pacing and story issues. The final twist barely has any impact, because it comes out of nowhere. The more linear storytelling makes it feel predictable and cheesy. I think this could have been done in a more thrilling way.

Did you watch anything I’ve watched? Are there some movies/shows I should check out? Let’s talk about that!

Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #35

I’m still in shock over the things that happened on Critical Role these past weeks and I was swamped with work and other stuff, but I did manage to write a little bit for my Fantasy novel – I call that a win! Anyway, I also distracted myself with some good old TV shows and movies, let’s check them out!

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

Bee and PuppyCat (Season 1 or 2??)

Okay, so … this Netflix show is a sequel and/or reboot of an existing show. I was very confused while watching it, because this was my first experience with the Bee and PuppyCat, but at the same time, I couldn’t stop watching. I didn’t understand half of what was going on in all its ridiculousness, but I enjoyed myself and genuinely hope there will be more.

Fate: The Winx Saga (Season 2)

Fate is one of my guilty pleasures, it’s as simple as that. The new season released yesterday and I flew through it. I’m glad we finally got Flora, because what were they thinking when they didn’t include her in the first season, but I feel like they want to get closer to the source material now in general. I mean … there were hints at characters and relationships that I definitely remember from way back when …

There’s just something about the look of the show or the acting where I can’t fully take it serious, while they seem to take themselves super seriously. But I still binged it, so who am I to talk.

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (Season 1)

I’m glad the lawsuit was as easily resolved as I thought it would, but I vastly devastated at the lack of post-credit scene. I’ve gotten so used to it in this show and the episodes are so short. But we all know which cameo is coming soon and I CANNOT WAIT!

Vampire Academy (Season 1)

The first four episodes dropped and I enjoyed them so much. I’ve originally wanted to check out the show because of Kieron Moore as Dimitri, but I’ve quickly fallen for most of the cast. I haven’t read the books, only watched the movie, but I’m having a great time with this vampire renaissance.

Tell Me Lies (Season 1)

It’s just getting worse … why are they so toxic in their relationships?

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (Season 3)

Usually, I’d put the finale of a show in the above section, but I don’t have that much to say. I thought it was the best decision ever to focus more on Gina. She’s a star.

Star Trek: Lower Decks (Season 3)

The engineers not being able to relax and working even in their downtime is peak me.

Stargirl (Season 3)

I can’t wait to see where we go with Icicle Jr. this season. Him and Rick are gonna clash for sure.

MOVIES

As always, don’t forget to add me on Letterboxd if you want to be up to date on all my movie experiences!

Do Revenge

I’m so in love with Do Revenge! The pastel colors, the over the top characters, the soundtrack – all impeccable. And while the story seems like something you’ve seen before and where you feel like you can predict the outcome, there’s some really good mini-twists in there that make it all the more fun. It was a near perfect movie and it had a cast from like every show I’ve ever watched. I’m serious, there was someone from Stranger Things, Riverdale, Euphoria, Outer Banks, Love Victor, Ms. Marvel, 13 Reasons Why, Katie & Alexa, Game of Thrones … they really went hard when they assembled this cast.

Overall verdict – this movie is just a lot of fun! Also, I love Oscar Winner Olivia Colman. (You’ll get the reference once you watch the movie.)

Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #34

I’m so tired right now, I’m honestly not sure any of this will actually make sense, but we’re gonna do it anyway. Let’s talk about what I’ve been watching this past week!

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

I haven’t finished any new shows yet, although I started to binge Bee and PuppyCat, which is such a random show. I know it existed before this 2022 Netflix version/sequel, but I just went in knowing nothing and it’s fun.

Roswell, New Mexico (Finale)

It’s over! This new run of Roswell truly had its ups and downs. I was so in love with some of the characters, but the final season was disappointing to say the least. Except for the main ship, a lot of other relationships were sidelined or rushed. You all know that I adore Maria more than anything, she’s my favorite on the show, and it seems they weren’t able to get the actor for Gregory to return for the final season. So, she was just thrown into the arms of Dallas, which was cool, because they have chemistry and he’s great too, but it was rushed and THEY DIDN’T EVEN END UP TOGETHER. This is me complaining about someone who never got a steady relationship on the show anyway. I don’t even want to imagine how Malex and Echo fans are doing, because either their ship wasn’t there for 80% of the season or it is now left in space limbo indefinitely.

I know they had planned to do several time jumps for a final season, which they didn’t get, but I wish they just had at least a bit of a look ahead to give us more closure.

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (Season 1)

While I adored the comedic duo that was Madisynn and Wong, I didn’t love this episode as much as some of the ones before … I think Jen’s story didn’t get to shine as much and the way they kept bringing up that interview about how she got her name, I just have a feeling that’s obviously going to play into Titania’s lawsuit.

Tell Me Lies (Season 1)

WHAT DID I WATCH!? This show is just full of terribly unhealthy relationships, but I couldn’t stop watching and I will continue to tune in. I’m the worst.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (Season 3)

Glad I was wrong about Ricky and that he put Gina first. That would have been so disappointing.

Star Trek: Lower Decks (Season 3)

The fact that they thought they weren’t the cool ship. RIDICULOUS!

Stargirl (Season 3)

I want the Shade back! He’s one of my favorites and I’m gonna miss him. Sylvester just becomes increasingly more unhinged …

MOVIES

As always, don’t forget to add me on Letterboxd if you want to be up to date on all my movie experiences!

Thor: Love & Thunder

I FINALLY watched Thor: Love & Thunder. I enjoyed the movie a lot, although Ragnarok is still my favorite Thor movie. While some running gags got a bit tired, it was funny, but also had a lot of touching moments – not always an easy balance to handle. Having Jane Foster back was a bright spot in the movie for me, but at the same time, it didn’t catch me as much. I don’t know if this is part of my superhero fatigue or if there really was an element missing that would have made it more special.

If you know me, you know that I adored the ending. The fact that Love & Thunder was about something so completely different than what I had thought was perfect and I love these kind of stories, these unlikely but eternal bonds. I can’t wait for the next Thor movie to be honest.

AND I can definitely get used to Marvel films ending more or less in Ted Lasso cast member cameos. That’s lovely!

Did you watch anything I’ve watched? Are there some movies I should check out? Let’s talk about that!

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Aug 29-Sep 4/2022)

I meant to post this earlier today, but I was too wrapped up in reading the first book in the Murderbot Diaries series to tear myself away. Those novella style series always get me hooked and then I’m too broke to continue because the rest of the books are much more expensive. ANYWAY, that’s a topic for a whole other day, let’s take a look at the latest movie and TV show trailers and promos!

Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #33

I’m pretty late with my wrap-up on what I’ve been watching this week, but I hope you don’t mind. Let’s talk about some shows! (No movies, I’m afraid. I haven’t watched one in a while …) However, I’m going to preface this by saying that I refuse to watch House of the Dragon. I might change my mind once the full season is out, but I was so angry at what they did with Game of Thrones that I have no trust in them. I’m petty like that.
Secondly, I haven’t started The Rings of Power YET, but that one I’m very excited for. I have a feeling I might want to binge it though …

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

Partner Track (Season 1)

Like a lot of my friends, I was excited to see Arden Cho get a leading role in Partner Track. It’s really more of a romance, which is 100% the plot that takes center stage, rather than a legal drama, but I knew that going in. Based on a book series, they’d definitely have more material for future seasons, but I hope that they make it their own. I’m kind of crackshipping Ingrid and Z and don’t think he’s in the books or at least not who she would eventually end up with. I’m ready to play the long game with them on the show though!

It’s a nice show, sometimes has some frustrating moments, but was easy to binge!

Good Trouble (Season 4)

It only took FOUR SEASONS for Denvia to happen and it was the most frustrating journey ever. I know there are so many other characters on this show and season 4 held a lot of storylines, but those two were the ones I cared about the most and that I was most invested in getting together. Now, they better not mess it up, since Good Trouble has already been confirmed for a Season 5.

A lot of viewers were dismayed at the actress who play Callie leaving, but I don’t think it really changed much for the show overall. The endless love triangle went to Marianna instead, even though most of the characters have had multiple love interests throughout. I enjoyed them tackling the housing crisis in the US, especially LA. I also love the addition of Luca and hope he gets to shine some more. I’m not really too on board with the cult storyline though … I hope that ends in the first episode of Season 5 …

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (Season 1)

Not people complaining on the internet about She-Hulk twerking!? What is wrong with everyone? Deadpool does silly sh*t like that all the time and it doesn’t matter, but no, not Jen …

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (Season 3)

That duet between Gina and Corbin was AMAZING! I have a bad feeling about what Ricky is going to do next though. If he’s going to sabotage Gina’s relationship, I have a feeling it might backfire on him.

Star Trek: Lower Decks (Season 3)

Bold Boimler was really something! Saying “yes” to everything definitely isn’t the answer though.

Stargirl (Season 3)

This season is called “Frenemies”, which makes sense considering that all the former villains are now the nice neighbors of our heroes. Starting it off with a murder mystery was a choice! I’m looking forward to what the season will bring, haven’t been able to garner the same excitement as I did with season 1 though.

Roswell, New Mexico (Season 4)

Next week is the finale … not just of the season but the whole show and I found this to be a very lackluster ending, which makes me sad.

MOVIES

As always, don’t forget to add me on Letterboxd if you want to be up to date on all my movie experiences!

I rewatched Top Gun: Maverick again. Don’t ask why … I have zero explanation. I’ve just been chilling out to this ambiance video where you get to hang out with the new recruits at the Hard Deck (check it out here) to write and work and that’s probably prompted the rewatches.

Did you watch anything I’ve watched? Are there some movies I should check out? Let’s talk about that!
