I know it’s the last day of the month, but I’m afraid the actual September wrap-up will have to wait until Monday, which is also when I’ll go into a bit more depth on why I’ve been so busy and unable to blog. For now, let’s talk about some shows and movies I watched!
FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS
Heartbreak High (Season 1)
Heartbreak High on Netflix is the reboot of a very popular Australian show from the 90s and I’m here for it. I can’t speak to the original at all, as that’s not something that was airing where I lived, but I’m head over heels into this one and think it’s actually a good show for Gen Z. Someone said it’s like if Euphoria and Grand Army had a baby and it grew up in Australia, and I can totally see that?
First of all, the cast is racially diverse, not all characters/actors are neurotypical and there’s some good representation of different gender and sexual identities. Yay for non-binary main characters and an ace character as well, because we know that the latter mostly only appear in animated shows for some weird reason.
Secondly, while all the characters are deeply flawed in their own ways, they are (mostly) easy to root for and relate to. You don’t have to agree with their actions, but I found it so easy to get invested in their drama. I 100% hope that the show generates some buzz, because I NEED another season.
Lastly, the trailer doesn’t do it justice. Like … at all.
WEEKLY TV SHOWS
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (Season 1)
I liked this week better than the last one, just because the group session with some of Marvel’s most obscure characters was so much fun. Also, we knew Josh was shady, right?
Vampire Academy (Season 1)
I continue to be utterly in love with this show. I know it’s not perfect, but I like the cast and story a lot. It’s currently the show I’m most looking forward to each and every week and I’m going to be so sad that the first season will be over in only a couple of weeks. At least we got so much packed into the episodes already. I mean, we just met Adrian!
Tell Me Lies (Season 1)
These people continue to be highly problematic. Stephen is worse for sure, but Lucy is no angel.
Abbott Elementary (Season 2)
That cold open was everything!
Star Trek: Lower Decks (Season 3)
I weirdly don’t feel as invested this season, but it might just take a couple more episodes. I saw a clip for episode 8 or 9 and really want to know what that was about.
Call Me Kat (Season 3)
I had no idea this show was back, but I hope it’s going to be another fun season.
9-1-1 (Season 6)
They always have to traumatize someone on these shows, don’t they? I just hope Hen is going to be alright. Also, Buck, get an actual couch.
MOVIES
As always, don’t forget to add me on Letterboxd if you want to be up to date on all my movie experiences!
Meet Cute
I’m not the biggest fan of Pete Davidson or Kaley Cuoco, but I was looking forward to this movie. I like romcoms, I like time travel, I like a good twist – now, imagine my disappointment when I didn’t vibe with Meet Cute at all. I think some subtlety in the beginning would have gone a long way, but it started out whacky and got even more so over time. It also turned out to be rather heavy, without letting those heavy moments work or letting the viewer sit with it really.
In the end, I didn’t feel like I enjoyed myself at all. Yes, there were one or two actually cute moments, but overall, this felt rather unhealthy and I wasn’t rooting for that ending in any way. It’s a shame when a movie is a miss like that.
It is a shame about Meet Cute. I was looking forward to it a bit, but you and others have reported in on its problems. It sounds like a mess and I’m gonna steer clear, even though I’m a huge Kaley fan. She-Hulk’s episode – I thought it was great fun, and it was nice to see a bit more “world-building” for the Abomination character. No, I did not see Josh being a bad dude, but I guess the instant ghosting might have been a red flag huh?

Yeah, I really hoped Meet Cute would be better. The concept was such a fun idea, but the execution … did not love it.
I think I’ve just lost faith in a lot of men lately …

Bummer you didn’t love Meet Cute. I had high hopes for that one. Maybe I’ll still watch it. I’m a fan of Kaley’s shows/movies, though. I am still making my way through Cobra Kai and watching Resident Alien episodes as they release.

I really was bummed. I was annoyed at myself for not liking Meet Cute, but I just really didn’t love the execution. It had such potential!

I actually didn’t like this week’s episode. I mean, I get why they wrote it, but at the same time, I thought that they should be doing a lot more to develop the plot rather than Jenn’s character. And I’m starting to get the idea that they plan to leave a lot of room for loose threads that can be wrapped up in a second season. Not that I mind that, but I feel like the last two episodes won’t be satisfying because they’re leaving so much for a second season.
Also, I watched some horror movies, one of which was good and one of which was really dumb and dated, and I’m looking forward to watching Hocus Pocus 2 tonight or tomorrow.

I feel like sometimes we really aren’t on the same page with She-Hulk. I thought it furthered Jen and the main storyline in an interesting way.
I still haven’t watched Hocus Pocus and before you say it, I have enough people pestering me to get to it already. I’m just not in the mood.

Well, a lot of the love for it comes from nostalgia, so maybe you wouldn’t enjoy it even if you were in the mood. That being said, I do enjoy the original, and I liked the new one too.
Also, can I pester you into watching the new Hellraiser as well as the old one? xD

Oh wow … Hellraiser too? I think that one might be too scary for me to watch alone 😅

Yeah, I could see either version traumatizing you. Still, you could tell people you really went outside your comfort zone with it.

Let me know if you do. I want to know if your hair turned white from terror. 😂

You’re not exactly making a good case for me to actually go and check it out.

That’s because I know you so well, and I know now that no matter how much I pester, you won’t be a huge horror fan like I am. I can see you checking out Killer Klowns from Outer Space, though. That seems more your jam.
Still, I would be interested in n your thoughts on either version of Hellraiser. Always good to have an outsider’s perspective.

Clowns? Really? I was a clown as a kid for Halloween once, but honestly, the older I get, the more they creep me out haha

I think that’s true for all of us.

I liked this week’s episode of She-Hulk better than last as well. The therapy session was funny. I still need to start Abbott Elementary.

Well, Abbott is always there whenever you feel like it 🙂
