Seven Years of Blogging – I’M STILL HERE! (+Giveaway!)

SEVEN YEARS! It never ceases to amaze me for just how long I’ve been doing this. When I started Life and Other Disasters, I was still in uni and even had a previous blog from High School on my track record that barely lasted a couple weeks. In my mind, there was no way I would keep going for so long. I won’t lie to you, the seven-year-itch has caught me too, and there were times I wondered if I should maintain it at all or maybe let it slide into oblivion with shinier platforms like Twitter, Instagram and YouTube (don’t even get me started on TikTok, I’m too old for that one) out there to take over.

But this isn’t about how things have moved on a bit or how I feel like a lot of people forget about the work bloggers put into their posts. There were definite ups and downs, sometimes entire months without any posts other than trailers. I am guilty of not always bringing my A-game myself. However, I found, no matter what life threw at me, I never regretted having this blog to come back to. But most of all, I cherish the people I have met on here that have become some of my dearest friends. I would never ever want to miss you!! (I hope you know who you are)

So, basically, I’m saying I am still here! And even though I have no clue what the future holds and for how long I will stay here, I think seven years is a mighty fine reason to celebrate. I haven’t done this in a while, but I really wanted to give back to everyone who takes the time to visit Life and Other Disasters, like and comment on a regular basis. It really means so much to me, whether you’ve been sticking around for years or have just recently discovered the blog! Long story short: I’m doing a giveaway!! You lot have been the greatest at doing Q&As and other alternatives I have tried these past years, I thought it was about time I did one of these once more. And nothing seemed more fitting than to take a look at some of my favourite reads from the past years and let the winner choose one of the books I am suggesting.

6-Year-Blogiversary: I AM STILL DOING THIS!?

I know I keep saying this every year, but I truly can’t believe that it has been 6 years already. On the one hand, blogging has been such a constant part of my life, that I don’t really remember what it was like without it. However, at the same time, I never truly thought that I would stick with this for such a long time. I mean, it’s been literal years, and by now I don’t feel like I will ever really quit doing this, even if there are months that I don’t post a whole lot.

Usually, I try to do something special for these kind of milestones, because I want to give back to the people who made all of this possible – YOU! Even if I keep repeating myself, I insist that it’s necessary to really say this – blogging would be dull without the people. If there had been zero interactions, this would have all ended a long time ago, but instead (even during the tough times) this community has become a refuge and place of friendship. I love talking about all day every day kind of situations, the latest binge-watch or more personal, in depth subjects with some of you. It brings me joy to know that there is someone on the other side of this screen who reads this and maybe agrees with what I had to say or even if they don’t, try to talk to me and have a friendly discussion. It makes this already pretty small world a little smaller and therefore make me feel closer to all of you.

Back to my original point, I am currently not exactly at my most inspired or swimming in money. Last year (check out the post here), I did a giveaway of my own art work in return for Q&A material from you. As I said, I am not at my most creative at the moment and therefore I was wondering if you would be interested in a repeat of that?

Basically, here is how it works:

  • You ask me questions you always wanted to know the answer to in the comments or on Twitter – nothing is off limits!
  • You additionally state that you want to enter the giveaway – the artwork will be a surprise! (ONE winner will be chosen at random)
  • All of this should be done by June 14th, 2019
  • If you are not yet 18+, please have the permission of your parents to enter. I will need personal information should you win the giveaway

If this flops, we will just pretend this never happened and I only did a low-key blogiversary celebration. If it is a success though, then I will post the answers to your questions next weekend and inform the winner separately. Lastly, once again a big fat THANK YOU from me to all of you!

Blogiversary Q&A (Part 2)

So, just yesterday you got a little insight into the blogging and reading questions I got asked (which you can check out here if you missed it). This is part 2 of the Blogiversary Q&A I announced last week. Have fun reading this once again ridiculously long post!

TV AND FILM

First TV show you remember watching? (Savannah @The Book Prophet)

That’s a tough one. It was definitely something animated. Maybe “Der kleine Maulwurf”, which is just translated to The Mole and is a Czech TV program from the 80s and 90s?

List your favourite and least favourite characters from your Top 3 TV shows! (Savannah @The Book Prophet)

Narrowing it down to three shows feels like torture already, so I am going to give you some of my favourite shows, but the top 5-10 are always changing … so this isn’t fair at all.

Sense8 – my favourite is probably our drama queen Lito and my least favourite is Whispers (who can go straight to hell)

Wynonna Earp – my favourite is the badass title character Wynonna herself (although Waverly was SUCH a close call for that spot) and my least favourite is probably … Willa?

Timeless – Lucy is my favourite on the time team and my least favourite is Nicholas Keynes because that entitled prick thinks he can change the world to his bigoted and outdated image.

What TV moment left you the most disappointed? (The Orang-utan Librarian)

The How I Met Your Mother finale … let’s just forget that ever happened.

What was the best TV finale you’ve ever seen? (The Orang-utan Librarian)

Wow, that’s a really tough one. I like things that are neatly tied up but still with an option for possible comebacks, if that makes any sense? I quite liked the ending of Charmed and Dawson’s Creek. That’s not to say that those were the absolute best TV has to offer, but it’s my kind of finale.

You often talk about TV shows you love (and that’s incredible), but… is there any TV show you really can’t stand? (Marie @Drizzle and Hurricane Book)

This is a little difficult to answer, just because I don’t even think about shows that I might not like? If I think it’s not for me, I basically erase its existence from my brain. Sometimes friends can convince me to give something a try, other times I just ignore everyone and don’t watch it. It doesn’t mean the show is bad or that I can’t stand it. I personally didn’t enjoy Breaking Bad, so I didn’t even finish the first season and probably won’t return to it. That doesn’t mean it’s not a massive success that many people love or even that it isn’t good TV.

Kat, as the Queen of TV, recommend us some amazing shows! (Cátia @The Girl Who Read Too Much)

Easy: Sense8, Timeless, The Royals, Imposters, Wynonna Earp, The Good Place, Dynasty, Doctor Who, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, One Day at a Time … it’s probably best if you just browse through my #CurrentlyWatching posts haha

What TV show would you recommend to everyone? (Michelle @The Writing Hufflepuff)

I don’t believe that there is one show that fits all audiences, but if we are talking the readers on my blog, I’d say Younger! It’s about a 40-something woman who has to pretend to be in her twenties to make it in the publishing industry after she took off work for her family for too long. It’s so freaking brilliant and has already been confirmed for its 6th season. So, you get to binge quite a bit too!

If you HAD to choose one TV show to watch for the rest of your life, which one would you watch? (Michelle @The Writing Hufflepuff)

I know that back in the day I was so sure I’d say Doctor Who, but now … I don’t know. I don’t click with the newer episodes as much as I used to. I think I might go with Sense8 instead, just because it would always make me feel connected, emotional and still offer a ton of action.

A BIT OF EVERYTHING

If you could learn any three skills, and become a master at them in a month without much difficulty, which ones would you pick? (Rami @Rami Ungar the Writer)

Well, I’d love to be able to do EVERYTHING, but since I have to choose I want to be able to play the cello, learn how to surf and I’d like to design and tailor my own clothing.

When was the first moment you actually decided you wanted to become an artist? (Swinging on a Star)

Hmm … I don’t think it was an active decision. It’s always been a part of my life and I’ve been told that I was already very creative in kindergarten. So, I just indulge into that side of my personality more some times than others.

What is your opinion of a Korean band (namely BTS) becoming big in America? (Swinging on a Star)

I think it’s great! It broadens everyone’s horizon and gives an insight into Korean culture, as I tend to see people really digging deep into the background and lifestyle of the bands. I hope that the bands are also having fun while they are at it and just hope that the people who complain about their (poor) English understand that not everyone HAS to speak that language.

What is your favourite study subject? (Michael K)

Back in school I used to love English, Art and History, while at uni my favourite subject was usually Dramaturgy.

Do you have any other hobbies beside books & series/movies? (Michael K)

I’ve only just started showing some of my artwork on my blog, but drawing and painting has always been a hobby of mine. I also like to do yoga, but it’s been months since I’ve managed to go to class.

Favourite desserts? (Michael K) | What’s your favourite type of cake? (Marta @The Cursed Books)

My grandma’s red wine cake!

Which piece of artwork (that you created) are you the most proud of? (Sophie @Sophie’s Corner)

I really don’t mean to put my work down by the next statement, but I am not necessarily proud about any of the things I drew. I like them, in some cases I like them a lot, but there was nothing too extraordinary among it yet that would make me proud. However, I do love the way I captured Nico Mirallegro’s facial impression in this one:

What’s the most fun trip you’ve ever been on? (The Orang-utan Librarian)

ALL OF VANCOUVER!!! I cannot get over the amount of stars I met and sets I visited.

Would you do bookstagram? Why or why not? (Marie @Drizzle and Hurricane Book)

I don’t think so? I am just really not that great at taking pictures, light is always an issue and the quality of my photos is meh. Also, I like expressing myself more in words and I don’t like having to do everything on my phone.

One country you’d DREAM of visiting? One city in particular? (Marie @Drizzle and Hurricane Book)

I’ve always, always wanted to see Tibet.

You’re doing amazing art on your instagram, would you ever think about posting it/talking about it more on your blog as well? (Marie @Drizzle and Hurricane Book)

Sure. I don’t mind sharing my art on the blog as well, but counter question: how do you think I should incorporate it more? The only thing I can think of is a round up of what I drew for the monthly wrap up.

If you one day woke up and discovered you had superpowers what powers would you want and do you think you’d be a hero or a villain? (Beth @Reading Every Night)

I love this question so much! Many people have very intricate powers when they can wish for whatever they want, but all I will ever need as a superpower is teleportation (without restricting it to places that I have been to or seen before). And … I think I would be neither? I would keep it very much on the DL, but if I ever saw a kid hanging onto a balcony and in danger of falling, I’d obviously help. I just can’t see myself seeking out the dangerous situations and going out of my way to do heroic things .. maybe that is what makes me a villain though?

If your house were on fire and you could only save three things what would they be? (Beth @Reading Every Night)

I am guessing this is supposed to be answered in terms of sentimentality and not practicality? (cause then it’d be easy – wallet, phone and laptop) I think I’d save my High School yearbook from my exchange semester in the US. I have this wooden carved cassette that my grandpa made in which I store post cards and letters from friends, so that would obviously be saved. And lastly, the picture of my grandpa with me and my cousins.

Which fictional character would be the most boring to meet in real life? (can be from a movie, book, TV show, anything) (Andie @Andrea’s Nirvana)

It’s very hard to remember boring characters and I want to answer this question, but I honestly cannot even think of someone.

Do you have a dream art project? So something you’ve wanted to work on for a really long time now? (Michelle @The Writing Hufflepuff)

I would really, really love to draw the entire cast of Arcadia, but I don’t even know where to begin. And I’d also like for it to not just be separate portraits but one, huge image and I am afraid of ruining something if I keep adding to one paper. Hope that made sense.

Who’s your favourite Hogwarts Mystery character? (Michelle @The Writing Hufflepuff)

This is one of the best questions. I know it might sound silly, but I love Barnaby Lee. The boy really isn’t the brightest bulb in the bunch, but he is TOO PURE AND THE MOST PRECIOUS BEAN EVER! I also quite like Bill and Penny though.

What are your hopes for Arcadia? (Marta @The Cursed Books)

My biggest hope is that I get to finish it. That would already be a huge accomplishment and I would very much like for it to maybe get traditionally published one day. That’s really a long shot though. I’d just be happy if a ton of people read it on wattpad and talked to me about it.

This is the end of Part 2 and I really hoped you enjoyed to get to know me better over the past days. Again, if you have any more questions, please don’t hesitate to drop them in the comments section!!

Blogiversary Q&A (Part 1)

As part of my 5-year-blogiversary celebration, I gave you the chance to send in questions for me in return for being entered in my art giveaway. I’ll announce the winner at the end of the post and will send them a separate email to confirm their win! Here are now a couple of questions I received. I decided to split the post into two parts, just because I saw how long this one was getting. Enjoy!

BLOGGING

What first drew you to blogging? (Sophie @Sophie’s Corner)

I think it was that need to share my passion with other people in a way that I maybe felt like I couldn’t do with anyone in real life. You know that feeling when you just can’t stop talking about a certain topic, but no one is actually listening? Well, I figured someone on the internet maybe would …

Do you have a blogging routine? (Sophie @Sophie’s Corner)

I wish I could say yes, but except for my Sunday trailer posts (which I have proudly kept up for more than 2 years now and never missed once), I don’t schedule or work on particular days. That might also explain why my posting schedule is pure chaos and constantly keeps changing!

If you could spotlight ONE blog post for everyone to see which would it be and why? (Lois @Midnight Musings)

I said this just yesterday, but I really am glad to have the “Let’s Talk About Arcadia!” post on the blog now. It might not be the most representative of my writing and I should update it more often, but I selfishly want this one to get a lot of traffic and lead people to my story on wattpad. I just love hearing what people think about it and to get their reaction on the characters and events that unfold.

Do you talk about your blog with people in real life? (Marie @Drizzle and Hurricane Book)

I do! At the very beginning, I had a period of time where I kept it secret from just about everyone (except maybe my parents), but as it grew and got followers, I got less hesitant to share. I even put the link for it on my CV and talk about it in job interviews these days.

Did you ever think you’d stick with blogging all these years? What makes you stick with it, even now? (Marie @Drizzle and Hurricane Book)

Honestly, no. It’s not that I particularly thought I would get bored, but something always suspected that life would get in the way and that I’d quit before the end of the first year. All the more reason to be happy now that I stuck with it, I suppose. And there is no real reason I still do. Blogging is just part of my life now and I wouldn’t even know how to disengage from doing it.

What piece of advice would you give to Kat from five years ago just starting out on her blogging journey? (Beth @Reading Every Night)

This is a good one! I think I might just tell her to be more active and post more regularly. Don’t quote me on that, but I believe I posted maybe 3-4 times a month and there is nothing wrong with that per se, but if you are just starting out and you WANT the traffic and engagement on your blog, then you have to also do the work.

Also if you could travel back to any time throughout the past five years of your blogging experience is there anything you’d change/do over again? (Beth @Reading Every Night)

Okay, so this might be a little bit of a weird one, but bare with me. Shortly after I hit my first year anniversary, I started watching this show called “Finding Carter” on TV. It featured an actor by the name of Caleb Ruminer and because there was very little to find about him on the internet, I decided to do a little post on him with the information I did find. Over night, my views EXPLODED, as in they went from 300 views a month to 4000 instead. I still have the post up now, but I feel a little embarrassed about having done such a poor portrait on a guy I neither know personally nor know much about in general. I don’t even know if the stuff I found is accurate. While it did get me a strange kind of exposure, I might not have written it as the person I am today. I just don’t think I could bring myself to do it now.

What is the best thing blogging has led you to discover? (Beth @Reading Every Night)

PEOPLE! FRIENDS! I love everyone I have met on here so much and talk to some of them not just on a regular but daily basis. I wouldn’t want to miss that for the life of me.

What do you think you’d be doing now if you weren’t blogging? (Beth @Reading Every Night)

As in right now? This second? Maybe watch a TV show or read a book? I’d probably still find some reason to browse the internet.

READING

What is your favourite book of all time? (Sophie @Sophie’s Corner)

What a cruel, cruel question! Tell you what, I will give you a book that has come to me and enamored me immediately – Call Me By Your Name. It has flaws for sure, but it was written in a way I have not seen many stories told and will forever hold a special place in my heart.

What book/series would you want to be adapted into a TV series or a movie? (Sophie @Sophie’s Corner) | If you could adapt any book into a TV show or movie, which one would you choose and why? (Michelle @The Writing Hufflepuff)

There’s a lot of books I can imagine seeing on the big or small screen in the future. The one I am still baffled about not having happened yet though is the Night Circus. It would be perfect as a magical movie that just takes you to that whole other place. We have developed the technology to really bring that story to life and I just don’t understand why the people who optioned it a couple years back let that option expire.

What was your favorite book as a child? (Marie @Drizzle and Hurricane Book)

I had different books in different stages that I loved. I always adored Inkheart and Momo though!

One author you’d never read a book from? (or read again, if you tried it out and hated it?) (Marie @Drizzle and Hurricane Book)

Hmmm … probably James Dashner. I didn’t really like the Maze Runner books to begin with and then the sexual harassment allegations surfaced and now he’s just even less interesting than before. I don’t think I will miss his books on my shelf.

You have the chance to go for a cup of tea (so British) with your favourite author/actor/director. Who would your dream guest be and what would you ask them? (Lois @Midnight Musings)

Author – Pierce Brown and I would ask him to describe the process of the TV adaptation for Red Rising in as much detail as possible, since I know he is involved.

Actress – Bryce Dallas Howard! I just love the woman and I would ask her on her advice for getting taken seriously in the industry and how she battled all those people constantly asking her about her weight and work out regiment. She’s been very outspoken about how superficial this world is and I actually love that she isn’t the typical Hollywood size but gets to star in action movies like Jurassic World nonetheless.

Director – Taika Waititi or Ava DuVernay. I can’t choose! I’d just ask them about their work process.

I know my answers were probably boring, but I don’t think I would even be able to get a simple sentence out should I actually meet them.

What upcoming book/movie/TV show release are you the most excited for? (Beth @Reading Every Night)

Book – Odd One Out by Nic Stone. I have been promised an actually amazing love triangle!

Movie – Set It Up, because Zoey Deutch and Lucy Liu!!! Also, I adore cute RomComs!

TV Show – I know it just released, but Cloak and Dagger is amazing and I need for Freeform to not mess this up (especially since they also will release New Warriors, another Marvel show soon)

Don’t worry if your question didn’t show up today, there is a lot more to come! Lastly, I put all the names on tiny sheets of paper, threw them in a bowl and let my mum draw a name. I am very happy to announce that my friend Marie is the winner!!

If you missed out on winning this time around, you can be sure I will do another similar giveaway in the future. And if you want to ask some more questions, please don’t hesitate to do so in the comments!!

5-Year-Blogiversary: Am I a Blogosaurus yet?

5 YEARS!?!?!?! I feel old … and proud! Which makes me an old and proud blogosaurus I suppose? (This was a running gag among some bloggers and myself about how people in the community, who stick around for so long, are basically dinosaurs.) Looking back, I cannot even imagine life without blogging anymore. What did I do in my spare time? Why was I even at my laptop? (school work and TV shows still existed, but that doesn’t seem as compelling of a reason …) What would I do without the many, many amazing people that have come into my life through blogging alone? Gosh, this is getting me emotional already.

It definitely hasn’t always been easy. There have been good and bad times – getting my first eARC, stats envy, reading slumps and very necessary weeks of me disappearing on binge-watches. I think we all have those moments where we doubt ourselves or what we are doing, but it’s only important how we come out the other side. This blog and the community that comes with it has been through it all with me – uni, graduating, fun and terrible jobs alike, my lengthy “vacations” and now this stretch of me trying to find my way as an adult. Some days I am just in awe to still have you all visit this little corner of the interwebs and I appreciate it so much.

As many of you know, I really wanted to do a giveaway for this milestone. It’s a special one to me, because I am turning 25 this summer and that means this blog was with me for more than a fifth of all my life. That is just crazy intense! Unfortunately, I am still on a job search, so a book giveaway just isn’t possible right now. I wish it were different, but things will change and I will be able to hopefully do one in the future again (maybe for my birthday in August? No promises, but here’s to hoping!).

However, to make this milestone a little fun for all of us, I was thinking we could do a little Q&A with a bonus! I would love it if you sent me some questions, that I will then answer in a separate post, via email and I will randomly choose one person from all those people who send in questions who will receive some of my new art work. For those of you unfamiliar with what I do, here is a little taste from my art insta page:

So, please send those questions to impossiblegirlblog@gmail.com and also include 5 of your favourite TV show/movie characters. To enter in this giveaway, you have to be 18+ years or have permission from your parents to share personal information, such as your name and full address with me should you win. None of the information you give me will be shared! Please, also be aware that I can only take people into consideration for the giveaway who send me an email, however, you are free to send me questions for the Q&A in the comments as well. The deadline to enter in the giveaway is June 12th 2018.

Lastly, THANK YOU for being here, for commenting, liking and following this blog! Thank you for being the amazing person that you are and for letting me be part of your life! I probably wouldn’t still be here blogging and celebrating if it weren’t for you all!

It’s a 4-Year-Blogiversary!!!

Looking back at 4 years of blogging, I am astounded that there was never really a time where I wanted to quit. Sure, I had some lows and went on (un)planned hiatus ever now and then, but never once did I think about stopping altogether. I appreciate this little community way too much to truly step away for good. I’ve made some amazing friends who I wouldn’t want to miss for the world and I even got to meet some people in real offline life who’ve mostly been pictures and words on my screen before. My appreciation goes out to all of you who visit this blog, not just those who I’ve become close friends with, but all of you who comment, share, like or simply read the things I write about.

So often blogging has felt like me simply shouting into the void. I know that I don’t talk about life-changing subjects. There are people out there who do incredible work, blogging about important topics such as diversity and equality in conjunction with TV and books. Every day I find myself learning from them and seeing all the ways my discussion are still lacking substance. I am a simple girl. I am mostly content with mainstream media and sometimes that means I still make mistakes, but just sharing a common passion can connect people so much. I have received so many deeply personal responses to posts that might seem trivial to others, but spoke to a couple readers and that makes it all so worth it.

I hope to continue this journey for many more years to come. Even if the amount and topics of my posts vary over time, I can’t see a future where Life and Other Disasters isn’t part of my life anymore.

I want to thank you all, but due to a tight travel budget, I can’t really do a proper giveaway at the moment. However, if you would like to receive a post card while I am still away on my “little vacation”, you can send me an email with your full name and address to:

impossiblegirlblog@gmail.com

Please make sure you are allowed to send me your info if you are not yet 18+ years old and please also refrain from posting your address in the comments or I will have to delete said response. To make things easier for me to organise, put “I want a post card” in your subject line. Depending on how many requests I get, I might not be able to do them all or I might have to space them out over time. I’m still in Canada for a couple more months, so it shouldn’t be too much of an issue. If for some reason I am not able to send you a card, I will still let you know.

Again, thank you so much for your continued support! TIME TO CELEBRATE!

2 Years of Blogging! Happy Anniversary!

IT’S BEEN 2 YEARS! I’m so happy about this, I can’t even find the proper words. Thank you to everyone who’s visited/commented/liked/followed this blog, whether you came here on purpose or stumbled upon it somewhere in the depths of the interwebs! A lot has changed since last year (which you can check out in detail here) and I want to share those accomplishments with you!

blogVery much like last year, here is the blog in numbers and facts (not just the past year but ever since it started – sorry, I was too lazy to do the math):

  • The total views of the blog amounted up to 32,702.
  • 1,510 comments were made.
  • We’re up to more than 115 followers on the blog itself, 63 people on Twitter and 126 people on Facebook. You go people!
  • This will be post #193!
  • 770 posts were shared. (Thank you for following that specific request from last year)
  • Again, I had visitors from all continents! Yay! (I’m going to take over the world someday muhahaha)
  • The Top Comments are no longer exclusively on Doctor Who posts, but all sorts of topics such as Teen Wolf, Finding Carter, Lust for Love and many more.

If you want to know anything else, please don’t hesitate to ask! I’m concluding this with another THANK YOU! Keep reading the blog, keep commenting and liking to make it many more great years to come!
