The Fall Book Tag

I was tagged for this, brace yourselves, back in 2017. That is the shelf-life a lot of my tags have to endure until I get to them and I am so incredibly sorry for that. I’m not sure if Beth @Reading Every Night will even see this post now (I miss her on the blogosphere), but I’m doing the Fall Book Tag anyway. The weather is slowly getting colder, I can wear layers again … I just like the transition to this new season and wanted to celebrate that by doing a tag (and I haven’t posted anything else yet this week).

RULES

  • Please link back to Bionic Book Worm, as the creator of this tag. She wants to see your answers.
  • Use her graphics—if you want to.
  • Have fun!

*click on the covers to get redirected to the Goodreads pages of the books. If I have reviews up, they will be linked in the titles in the text bits!*

CRISP FALL AIR – a book that felt fresh and new

Charming as a VerbI’m like 11 pages into this, so maybe not the best judge, but I just get exactly that fresh and crisp vibe from Charming as a Verb. If you’ve followed me for a bit, you will have noticed my utter enthusiasm for Ben Philippe’s first book, The Field Guide to the North American Teenager, and his style of writing that I really enjoy. Everything flows so easy and feels natural.

HOWLING WINDS – an ending that blew you away

A Deadly Education (Scholomance, #1)This award 100% goes to A Deadly Education, because it was a really fun book to read for me. I liked it a lot, but also felt like it could just be a standalone and then THE FINAL LINE HIT ME! It made me question everything I had just read and I love it when that happens. Seriously cannot wait for you all to be able to read that book too!

COMFY SWEATERS – a book that gave you the warm and fuzzy’s

Tweet Cute*me going through my pile of books filled with sadness and misery* – Ah, yes, here we have something!

Tweet Cute was one of those books that just made you smile. The banter is fun and the grilled cheese references WILL make you hungry. But that’s just what you’ll have to endure for a lovely contemporary romcom sometimes.

BRIGHT COLORS – a cover with either red, yellow or orange in it

Burn Our Bodies DownI’m sure there’s plenty of people who already love and adore Burn Our Bodies Down, but I will never be one of them. Something about that book just rubs me the wrong way and I did not enjoy it. However, it fits the category like a glove!

LEAF FIGHT – a book with non stop action

The Black VeinsAnother book I am currently reading (and please don’t ask me why I can’t focus on just one book, cause I don’t know) is The Black Veins. There’s magic and road trips and monsters and people getting kidnapped. I’m not even at the halfway mark and so much has happened!

PUMPKIN SPICE – your most anticipated read

This is a bit tricky for me, because I’m at a point in my book blogging life where I just don’t keep very much up to date with new releases. Sometimes something catches my eye, but I have so much backlisted that I would be completely helpless without some of my blogging buddies and blogger blast mails from publishers to keep me up to date.

Something that releases soon though (October 6, 2020) is Spoiler Alert and it sounds so much up my alley:

Spoiler Alert

Marcus Caster-Rupp has a secret. While the world knows him as Aeneas, the star of the biggest show on TV, Gods of the Gates, he’s known to fanfiction readers as Book!AeneasWouldNever, an anonymous and popular poster.  Marcus is able to get out his own frustrations with his character through his stories, especially the ones that feature the internet’s favorite couple to ship, Aeneas and Lavinia. But if anyone ever found out about his online persona, he’d be fired. Immediately.

April Whittier has secrets of her own. A hardcore Lavinia fan, she’s hidden her fanfiction and cosplay hobby from her “real life” for years—but not anymore. When she decides to post her latest Lavinia creation on Twitter, her photo goes viral. Trolls and supporters alike are commenting on her plus-size take, but when Marcus, one half of her OTP, sees her pic and asks her out on a date to spite her critics, she realizes life is really stranger than fanfiction.

Even though their first date is a disaster, Marcus quickly realizes that he wants much more from April than a one-time publicity stunt. And when he discovers she’s actually Unapologetic Lavinia Stan, his closest fandom friend, he has one more huge secret to hide from her.

With love and Marcus’s career on the line, can the two of them stop hiding once and for all, or will a match made in fandom end up prematurely cancelled?

I TAG THEE

Since it took me, hold up … checking again, 3 years to do this tag, I just kind of want to leave it open for anyone who wants to join in no the fun. IF YOU READ THIS (and you want to do it) CONSIDER YOURSELF TAGGED!

What did you think of my answers? Let’s talk!

Never Have I Ever – Writing Tag!

One of my favourite blogger buddies, The Orang-utan Librarian, has tagged me for the Never Have I Ever Writing Tag. I read their answers and it was great to read and I implore you to check out the post yourself, that is, after you read mine, because this is going to be fun!

The original was created by the Long Voyage – so definitely check out that here!

NEVER HAVE I EVER …

. . . started a novel that I did not finish.

Ha! That’s a good one!! I started about 15 different stories and finished one of them. My track record in that department is abysmal.

. . . written a story completely by hand.

I … don’t think so? I think I started stories and maybe I’ve written a short story here or there by hand, but definitely not a full one. I already get annoyed with regular editing, I can’t imagine having to transfer everything to my laptop first.

. . . changed tenses midway through a story.

Not on purpose. I think, sometimes, when I return to a story after a long time, I have to get back into the tense maybe and mess it up a bit. But never on purpose.

. . . not researched anything before starting a story.

What is research? No, in all honesty, I probably should do research sometimes, but I love winging it and then despairing in the middle of the story because I have no clue what I am doing. I really do the bare minimum sometimes …

. . . changed my protagonist’s name halfway through a draft.

Nope, not the protagonist’s name, but definitely some side characters.

. . . written a story in a month or less.

YES! The one and only story I ever finished writing – Break Up Buddy – was one I did during NaNoWriMo. I was so proud to have finished it in a month and I still am. I admire people that just throw out stories in days or weeks (and there are more than you might think).

. . . fallen asleep while writing.

I don’t think so?

. . . corrected someone’s grammar irl / online.

Guilty as charged. I’m not running around correcting everyone all the time, but sometimes I just couldn’t not say anything? Most of the time I just keep it to myself, especially since I make plenty of mistakes myself.

. . . yelled in all caps at myself in the middle of a novel.

Like … “started writing in all caps unrelated to the story, because I was frustrated with myself”-all caps? That’s not really something I do?

. . . used “I’m writing” as an excuse.

I just don’t think that people leave me alone or listen to me when I say that I am writing. At least I know a certain someone who will interrupt me like a thousand times, even if I have made it clear that I was trying to focus on writing. Guess that excuse doesn’t fly with people in my life?

. . . killed a character who was based on someone I know in real life.

I’m not even sure I’ve killed a character on page yet, so that’s a no? But also, no one is based on someone I personally know. On actors? That’s a whole different story … but not actual real life friends and/or enemies.

. . . used pop culture references in a story.

These questions should be so easy to answer, but I really have to think hard about them. I am pretty sure there must have been some kind of reference, right? Something to indicate a time period? I just literally can’t think of a single example …

. . . written between the hours of 1am and 6am.

100% YES!

. . . drank an entire pot of coffee while writing.

I don’t drink coffee ever, so that’s a clear no from my side. (Tea all the way!)

. . . written down dreams to use in potential novels.

I actually have a designated journal for my dreams. They are wild sometimes, people! I still like the timey-wimey one where Adam Driver turns out to be my son, but I am technically younger than him? We shall, however, never mention the dolphin story again. That was borderline body horror and that’s not my genre …

. . . published an unedited story on the internet / Wattpad / blog.

Yes, yes and yes? There used to be this website called figment, where I posted a lot of my really, really old stuff. But also recently, totally!

Arcadia is on wattpad. Click here to read it!
Dreamer was on wattpad, but is not published there anymore …
The witchy WIP is published on a private blog that’s password protected. However, friends can request the password and I’m pretty easygoing in sharing it.

. . . procrastinated homework because I wanted to write.

Absolutely! I have to agree with the Orang-utan Librarian here, I sometimes even spaced out in class to write my story. And honestly, even at work from time to time (imagine me doing retail work and there being zero customers for over an hour).

. . . typed so long that my wrists hurt.

That happens so easily, but also, I just don’t have the best set up for writing.

. . . spilled a drink on my laptop while writing.

Thank the heavens that never happened!!! THE HORROR!

. . . forgotten to save my work / draft.

No? I think I forgot to save something for school a couple times, but never the really important stuff aka my stuff.

. . . finished a novel.

As in, written a beginning, middle and end to a story? Yes. As in, edited the story to make it presentable and potentially marketable? No. no no no.

. . . laughed like an evil villain while writing a scene.

I WISH!

. . . cried while writing a scene.

I was close, but I don’t think so?

. . . created maps of my fictional worlds.

YES! But funny enough, not for a fantasy world, but rather a contemporary novel instead. I just printed out maps from Google maps from places that I’ve been to and liked/lived at. It was hilarious in hindsight.

. . . researched something shady for a novel.

I think I researched some illnesses and symptoms. Or “what to do when someone has a seizure”, but that’s not really all that shady, is it?

I TAG THEE

I would love for the sister-writer-duo Nyx and Marie to do this tag and also Caro!

I hope you enjoyed this tag and if you feel like doing it yourself, GO FOR IT! I’d love to chat some more in the comments and also feel free to ask me anything, if you want to know more!

The “I Should Have Read That” Book Tag

I wasn’t very consequent with my Friday is tag day proclamation, but the lovely Kirstie Ellen @Upside-Down Books tagged me for the “I Should Have Read That” Book Tag and it seemed deliciously fun. I feel like I’ll have to expose myself with some of those answers, so, I want to thank her for the opportunity and hope you all enjoy it!

RULES

  • Thank the person who tagged you and link back to their post
  • Link to the creator’s blog (booksnest.co.uk) in your post
  • Answer the questions below
  • Tag 10 others to take part (I’ll just leave this up to whoever wants to do it)
  • ENJOY THE TAG!

A book that a certain friend is always telling you to read

Beartown (Beartown, #1)Alright, so, Lois never specifically urged me to read Beartown in any way, but she knows me so well and every time I see her talk about it, I just want to pick it up right away … I just haven’t even bought it yet …

For real though, it’s a small town sports drama with deep human emotions and I just know I’d be so here for it!

A book that’s been on your TBR forever and yet you still haven’t picked it up

Testament of YouthI actually have briefly picked it up, because I adore the movie with all my heart, but I never made it all the way through Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain. It’s quite heavy and since they are her diaries, it’s all real life stuff and I just couldn’t … I think I’d rather rewatch the movie.

A book in a series you’ve started,  but haven’t gotten around to finishing yet

Dark Age by Pierce Brown is still chilling on my shelf. That book scares me SO much! I don’t know why, but it’s just MASSIVE and I haven’t really read any big books like that for a long time and I know it’s likely going to wreck me emotionally on top of it all too.

Just look at it compared to some other books on my TBR …

A classic you’ve always liked the sound of, but never actually read

War and Peace? I don’t know … it’s just that I know quite firmly that I don’t enjoy very many classics, but I quite like movie adaptations of Russian materials, so that’s one of the few I could think of.

A popular book that it seems everyone but you has read

HA! I know that one! Harry Potter, and I truly mean the entire series. Sometimes (looking at you Percy Jackson), I start a series and then life gets in the way and I forget to continue, but I’ve literally never picked up the Harry Potter books and at this point, I just don’t see it happening.

A book that inspired a film/TV adaptation that you really love, but you just haven’t read it yet

The GoldfinchLet’s not go overboard by saying I really loved loved The Goldfinch, but I loved the trailer? I enjoyed the movie, I just thought it would have been a better fit for a limited series or some other longer format. Anyway, haven’t read it, but can definitely see the appeal.

A book you see all over Instagram but haven’t picked up yet

The Priory of the Orange TreeHmmm … a confession that wasn’t even prompted her but that is coming regardless is that I’m not really in the bookstagram realm. A book I kept seeing everywhere, especially on Twitter too was The Priory of the Orange Tree and it’s another very daunting size.

I TAG THEE

I haven’t really been up my blogging game, so I’d like to leave it up to anyone who sees this tag and wants to do it. CONSIDER YOURSELF TAGGED!

What did you think of this post? Can you relate? Are you shocked? Let’s talk!

The Brooklyn Nine-Nine Book Tag

I’ve been looking through my 75+ drafted posts and I am trying to get to some that have been in there for literal years. Back in early 2018 Fadwa @Word Wonders tagged everyone who loves the show for the Brooklyn Nine-Nine Book Tag. (I would like to link to the original creator, but Em doesn’t have a blog anymore?) I don’t know why I didn’t do it back then, because I sure seemed to have saved it? I really love Brooklyn Nine-Nine, so it would be a natural fit. But that doesn’t stop me from simply doing it now, especially since I am trying to get a kind of blogging routine back (Fridays for tags maybe?). Let’s go!

Jake Peralta

Starts off goofy and kind of a sh*thead and then becomes a lovable goofball.

I am picking Jack from Tweet Cute! (and not just because his name is so close to Jake …) In general, I feel like the Pepper-Jack-dynamic is very similar to the Amy-Jake-one (if I wasn’t trying to pick a different book for every prompt, I’d definitely also say Pepper was Amy). Jack isn’t that much of a sh*thead, but he is a bit of a prankster and snarky and bitter.

Raymond Holt

Starts off as intimidating robot, then becomes the dad figure you secretly (not so secretly) wanted in life.

Okay, hear me out! I know that Mr. K from Anna K is NOT the perfect father. The way he treats Steven and then does a 180 in how he treats Anna is … less than ideal? However, he seems strict and intimidating, but still loves his children and wants the best for them. Even when it takes him some time to come around, he definitely comes through for Anna in the end.

Amy Santiago

Type A who’s in control but geeks out over nerdy things like stationary and tries to be cool (and fails).

Okay, so Maddison from The Field Guide to the North American Teenager actually IS cool, but she is Type A if I have ever seen one. The way she coordinates everyone’s life is a miracle and I definitely think she has a nerdy side to herself for sure.

Gina Linetti

Lovable narcissist who everyone is lowkey afraid of, extremely smart yet uses their power for evil.

I am sure there are loads of characters like that in more recent fiction, but somehow the only one I could think of was Jay Gatsby from The Great Gatsby? I don’t think I need to explain the narcissistic qualities of him, how his plans couldn’t exactly have been called “good” and how everyone was a little intimidated, yet enthralled by him?

Charles Boyle

The most loyal of friends, would memorize everything about you to make sure you’re always happy, also a foodie.

When I think about good literary friendships, somehow Morgan Matson always comes to mind. My favourite of hers is still Since You’ve Been Gone and Emily definitely has the loyal best friend thing down (Sloane not so much?). She also works in an ice cream shop during the summer, if memory serves me right, and that totally fulfills the foodie component.

Terry Jeffords

Always trying to have a self-care day but failing miserably because they need to take care of their rowdy children.

Apparently I like to throw in a childhood favourite for all these tags nowadays. It was a hard tie between Prosper and Scipio from The Thief Lord, because both have to act like the parents of the group in a way, even if they are all just trying to survive and live their lives.

Rosa Diaz

The less you know about their past … the better. Would kill to see them smile though.

Malachiasz? Malachiasz! (Wicked Saints remains a fave!)

Norm Skully

Loves food so much, they’d probably kill you for a donut. Would fake a heart attack for anything.

A little bit of a cop out, but the only character so obsessed with food that they’d do anything and that I could think of right now was Jughead. I mean, the only time he thought he might have romantic feelings for someone was when the other person was dressed as a hamburger?

Michael Hitchcock

Surprisingly a very good friend, though he seems like he’d sell you out for anything.

I am pretty sure that NO ONE believed in Sevro‘s loyalty when they first started this odyssey of Red Rising, but he has proven himself to be a formidable friend despite his shadiness.

CONSIDER YOURSELF TAGGED!!! Especially if you like the show!

What did you think of my answers for the prompts? Did they make sense? Let’s talk!

Kiss, Marry, Kill: TV Edition 2020

As in our usual Valentine’s Day tradition, I have prepared a game of Kiss, Marry, Kill for you! I stuck to TV shows again, just because it’s the easiest because I consume so much of it. As a little fresh up, here’s what it’s all about: with KMK you are pitting three people against each other and have to decide who, in this specific scenario, you would rather kiss, marry or kill. (Just to clarify, I never want to kill anyone, but I am going to try my best to justify the answers anyway.)

**All characters were chosen randomly from a much bigger pool than the end result could include**

ROUND 1

Kiss: TK Strand (9-1-1: Lone Star) – Look, I KNOW I am not his type, but it would only be a kiss. Let me have this!

Marry: Sally Malik (Being Human) – Sally was my favourite character on the US version of Being Human and a life with her would never get boring. Also, my girl is funny af!

Kill: Justin Davis (Spinning Out) – Justin is a bit of a player and I don’t know what to do with that. He is handsome as well, but TK is more so?

ROUND 2

Kiss: Yennefer von Vengerberg (The Witcher) – Yennefer is oozing sexual chemistry with basically everyone on screen. So, what’s one kiss?

Marry: Don West (Lost in Space) – What’s the best thing about the Robinsons? Their choice in mechanic! Terrible joke, but Don West really is the best and deserves all the appreciation. I see him as a family person, which I’d like in a partner.

Kill: Beth Cassidy (Dar Me) – Look, I just don’t like Beth? I get her complicated feelings and all, she sure doesn’t have it easy, but she scares me … in a not good way.

ROUND 3

Kiss: Josie Saltzman (Legacies) – Josie is just so cute!!

Marry: Duffy (Four Weddings and a Funeral) – I have the biggest crush on this dork. He is sweet and kind and nerdy and geeky and lovely. I was so sad on his behalf when his feelings didn’t get returned by [redacted], but he deserved better anyway.

Kill: Jane Sloan (The Bold Type) – Jane is alright, but out of the main trio, she IS actually my least favourite?

ROUND 4

Kiss: Grizz (The Society) – Grizz must be protected at all costs. I don’t think he’d fancy me, but someone has to be kissed …

Marry: Patrick Brewer (Schitt’s Creek) – When he serenaded Patrick, he captured my heart forevermore. Who wouldn’t want a partner like that??

Kill: Klaus (The Umbrella Academy) – WHYYYY? I did not want to do this. I would have married all of them if I could have. But with Klaus … maybe his abilities will make dying different and … maybe non-permanent?

ROUND 5

Kiss: Lenny Bruce (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) – My crush on Luke Kirby as Lenny Bruce intensifies with every season and while I highly doubt our lifestyles would be anything other than incompatible, I would go in for that kiss and then allow that man to disappear, no questions asked.

Marry: William (Another Life) – Soooo, I guess I am marrying an AI without a body? This is the future folks, everything is possible!

Kill: Leigh Shaw (Sorry for Your Loss) – Now, if this was about Elizabeth Olsen, I’d marry her in a heartbeat. But … it’s not? And Leigh is not an easy person. She lashes out at everyone all the time and she is selfish in her grief. Which she is allowed to be! Everyone grieves in their own way, but woman, you need to allow others to do the same then.

ROUND 6

Kiss: Lucifer Morningstar (Lucifer) – a kiss with the devil? Maybe a little tango to go with it? Why not?

Marry: Dennis Cooper (Good Trouble) – out of the three, he is the most normal and as much as I like watching all sorts of crazy stuff, I think non-supernatural/paranormal drama is already drama enough. And it’s not like Dennis doesn’t have some baggage of his own.

Kill: Viv Allen (October Faction) – Poor Viv! I really have no reason to put her in this category whatsoever. It’s just that I have spent much less time with her (as in number of episodes) and just don’t feel that close to her.

ROUND 7

Kiss: Fjor Jutul (Ragnarok) – I mean, can you blame me? Basically every girl in Edda is lusting after him.

Marry: Gestalt (The Rook) – I’d get a spouse with four different bodies, I feel like that’s such an advantage. They can do whatever independently, but at least one of them is likely to have time for me, right? And it doesn’t even matter who I tell something, the others would know automatically as well.

Kill: Matty (Reprisal) – The River Phoenixes, which Matty is a part of, were my absolute faves on Reprisal. But boy has issues. I mean, he’s part of a gang and CONSTANTLY on the road and would I have had to join the gang as well if I wanted to be with him? That’s just too much to handle.

ROUND 8

Kiss: Forty Quinn (YOU) – I love Forty, even if I don’t think I could actually handle him for a longer amount of time in real life.

Marry: Maggie Vera (Charmed) – Maggie is a badass and lovely person. She’s so in tune with her feelings and picks up on other people’s as well. Also, being with a witch would just be very on brand for me (despite what I have said a couple rounds earlier).

Kill: Payton Hobart (The Politician) – Payton is ruthless in his ambition and I just don’t have it in me. Also, who would want to be with a politician, briefly or long-term, anyway?

ROUND 9

Kiss: Caliban, Prince of Hell (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) – I mean, I already kissed the devil, so I might as well.

Marry: Jack Sheridan (Virgin River) – Jack seems like a genuinely good guy.

Kill: Tyler Locke (Locke & Key) – Tyler has just been an idiot one too many times to tolerate. (I am exaggerating, but boy made some mistakes for sure)

ROUND 10

Kiss: Veronica Mars (Veronica Mars) – She has been my idol ever since I was 12 or something, so yes, please!

Marry: Robin Buckley (Stranger Things) – Robin was one of the best additions of the new season and I love her snark and team up with Steve. I did not buy her uniform as a Halloween costume for nothing, folks!

Kill: Guzmán Nunier Osuna (Elite) – I actually like Guzman, out of all the people here though, I like him the least. *shrugs*

What did you think of my choices? In case none of your favourites, characters or shows, were mentioned, check out last year’s post and try your luck there!

Kiss, Marry, Kill: TV Edition

You all know, we’ve done this before! There was the book edition, the TV & book edition and this beautiful Valentine’s Day we are focusing on TV alone. I was even too lazy to make a new graphic, but that’s the beauty of this tag and this tradition … it still doesn’t get old. (At least I hope so!?!?!)

As always, this is also your yearly reminder that Valentine’s Day should not make you feel bad about yourself if you are single. I’ve never spent that day with anyone in particular and I am just fine! This day is just as much as about self love, if you choose it to be, so – be a little kinder to that face in the mirror today!

**all names and shows were randomly drawn**

ROUND 1

Kiss: Sutton (The Bold Type) – I don’t really have an explanation for this? Out of these three characters I feel the most neutral about Sutton??

Marry: Gert (Marvel’s Runaways) – Everyone who knows me, knows that I love Gert. I think marriage could be kind of exhausting with her, but she is fierce and not to be messed with and doing the best she can in a tough spot and I love her for that.

Kill: Manfred (Midnight, Texas) – Given how often he has been possessed by ghosts now … maybe he should just join them?

ROUND 2

Kiss: Marcy (Travelers) – Marcy is so pretty and cool, but also from the future with a very high intellect and I am not sure how I’d feel being with her for longer? So a kiss it is.

Marry: Michael (Roswell, New Mexico) – Michael is a broken boy, but I love him. He brings out the silly “I want to save THIS particular bad boy and love him forevermore”-feels in me.

Kill: Otis (Sex Education) – I am so sorry! Otis is like a precious bean, but he’s also so young and I can’t imagine dating him either??

ROUND 3

Kiss: Nick (The Handmaid’s Tale) – he is one handsome devil. Nick isn’t a bad man, but he is also not a good one. I credit that to the world he lives in, but I’d rather just have a brief encounter with him.

Marry: Jules (Imposters) – that woman has been through some heartbreak, but I am sure I could be the stable environment she needs. I am super trustworthy. Also, I always wanted to make a con artist fall in love with me. It’s a whole thing.

Kill: Elsa (Plan Coeur) – I never know how to explain the “kill” decisions, because Elsa is such an awkward mess that I super relate to her, but together we’d be terrible.

ROUND 4

Kiss: Matthew (A Discovery of Witches) – I am sort of over vampires, but … Matthew intrigues me. I’d like to know what a kiss feels like.

Marry: Alan (Russian Doll) – he was one of my favourite parts of the brilliance that was Russian Doll. He has his issues, just like everyone else (maybe a couple more), but he has a golden heart. I couldn’t imagine anyone nicer by my side.

Kill: Cameron (Halt & Catch Fire) – She is badass, but she also always believes she is right, holds a grudge forever … wow, dang … that all sounded way too familiar to myself. But my issue is that she lets her friends down and believes she is superior to them.

ROUND 5

Kiss: Eleanor (The Good Place) – Girl is a snack, as she constantly likes to point out herself!

Marry: Fallon (Dynasty) – would I like to have the comfort and security that comes with being a Carrington? Heck, yeah! I just don’t want all the drama and backstabbing.

Kill: Lisa (Friends from College) – Lisa is in enough love drama without me. I actually really like her on the show, unlike a lot of other viewers apparently, but out of the three here, she just wouldn’t be my top pick.

ROUND 6

Kiss: Tandy (Cloak and Dagger) – Tandy is a mess, but a cute one?

Marry: Buck (9-1-1) – not gonna lie, I am just majorly crushing on this dude. The way he was into Abby, I mean, that’s a girl’s dream! I want that for myself!!

Kill: Joe (You) – Easiest choice ever!!! One less creep out and about.

ROUND 7

Kiss: Amanda (Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency) – she’s cool. I’ve got nothing more.

Marry: Wynonna (Wynonna Earp) – She’s even cooler. I have even less to say.

Kill: David (Schitt’s Creek) – I AM SO SORRY! I adore David, but he’s a lot. Like a lot a lot.

ROUND 8

Kiss: Hope (Legacies) – I didn’t always like Hope, but she has grown on me. And she does have vibes with Josie, so I think she’d kiss a girl.

Marry: Schneider (One Day at a Time) – He’s such a lovable dork. I think him being in a loving environment, surrounded by family, that would really do him good. Just look at how he blossoms when he is with the fam on the show.

Kill: Alyssa (The End of the F***ing World) – Nah, I just couldn’t see myself with her.

ROUND 9

Kiss: Jasper (The Royals) – my beloved bodyguardian angel. I’d steal a kiss, but he’ll be forever with Len in my mind.

Marry: Dylan (Tidelands) – I just … uhm … think he’s hot? And he’s half siren! That’s my jam.

Kill: Carmen (Siempre Bruja) – I keep wanting to apologize to the characters, even though someone always has to die …

ROUND 10

Kiss: Tommy (Peaky Blinders) – that man is in pieces and I would never dare suggest I could somehow make him whole again.

Marry: Sansa (Game of Thrones) – my one and only true Queen!

Kill: Star (Star) – I envy her for her voice and tenacity, but that girl is so selfish and mean and sometimes straight violent.

So, that concludes this year’s Kiss, Marry, Kill. I know my taste in shows is pretty out there, so I hope there weren’t too many shows that no one knows in the mix. Feel free to ask about any you want to know more about though! As always, I’d love to chat! What do you think of my choices?

Happy Galentine’s Day: A Web Series About a Group of Girls

I’ve long thought about what I would post this week. Obviously, I am going to do my yearly rendition of Kiss, Marry, Kill on Valentine’s itself, but it didn’t feel right to just do that alone. So, instead I also want to celebrate Galentine’s Day this year … because I can! All my fabulous friends who are always there for me when I am in need are simply too amazing not to be celebrated on their own day every year.

So, I was trying to come up with something creative when I realised, I could perfectly combine this with something I wanted to talk about for a while now – web series! The thing is, I mainly watch German language web series and very few of them are available internationally or with subtitles, so I don’t want to post about it and get your hopes up about cool new content when you can’t even understand a thing. Not so with this one though, so let me dive in about DRUCK!

A while back, I could not log onto Twitter without the word SKAM floating around somewhere. It took me a while to realise that it was a Norwegian web series, but back then I didn’t have the time or interest to really dig into the matter. However, that show became so widely popular that a bunch of countries adapted it and I am watching SKAM Germany aka DRUCK religiously (I also started watching SKAM France, but that’s a whole other matter).

But why did I think this was a good fit for today’s post? Well, even with the trailer showing a lot about the love life of the girls, it’s mostly about their friendship group and dynamic. Each of the two seasons (so far) has a focus on a different girl from the group. It’s about how they met, how they supported each other but also how they fought, had differences, overcame prejudices and grew. It’s not all black and white, these are teen girls that make mistakes and sometimes really bad ones! But that’s part of what makes the show feel so real.

Another part of why I enjoy this show so much is that it operates on multiple platforms. On the one hand, you have the regular content on Youtube (click here if you want to watch the episodes in German, click here if you want to watch them with English subtitles). But even that is special, because throughout the week they release clips in what feels like “real time”. Say the scene plays on a Monday around 8AM, well, then the clip will be on uploaded to Youtube on Monday at 8AM. However, every Friday they post an entire episode which includes the clips from the week as well as new material.
Then in addition to this already pretty dope schedule, all the actors and actresses put their real life Instagram accounts on private and have public profiles as their character. That way they can post additional content in the shape of pictures or stories that won’t be featured in the actual episodes, but will add a certain touch of realness as well. And lastly, there’s the option of adding the show on Whatsapp, where they send you screenshots or voice messages the characters leave each other. (As well as updates about the show and new episodes) All of that makes the show incredibly interactive, even if you aren’t really interacting with them at all.

I know this was a super random post, but I hope you could still enjoy it to some extent. Feel free to ask me questions about the show, because I do realise it was rather short on the actual content of it, but it’s basically just teens in high school and the drama of their lives. I enjoy that sort of stuff!

Get to Know Ya – Book Tag!

I was initially planning on doing another book review before the end of the month, but … then I got busy and didn’t finish the book (what a week it has been!). So, instead of a review, I thought I’d do this tag that the lovely Marie and Nyx @Drizzle and Hurricane Books tagged me for! Without further ado, here we go:

Favorite Book of All Time

We just dive right in, don’t we? What a cruel question and how does one even choose? However, the purpose of this tag is to give an answer and I won’t be able to evade all of them, so I like to think of a book that comes to mind first or most often. Inkheart by Cornelia Funke is really a book that shaped me! I feel like that definitely is a contender for all time fave!

Favorite Book Five Years Ago

I … I didn’t have Goodreads 5 years ago, so how would I know!?!? Thinking about it, I DID have my blog five years ago though and one of the first posts I wrote was about The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. I’ve been going on about that book ever since, so seems fair enough.

Favorite Duology/Trilogy/Series

I am kind of known for throwing the Red Rising saga at everyone, but I am very torn … I also have STRONG feelings for the Monsters of Verity duology and a classic – Six of Crows. Sorry, but I am going to be that kind of that person that evades a straight out answer on this one.

Last Book You Read

Since this is something I can actually look up – easy peasy – it was Juliet, Naked by Nick Hornby and it was quite the disappointing read. I still want to watch the movie though, so … yeah, that is typical me fashion. Read my full review on it here.

Last Book of Poetry I’ve Read

I am pretty certain that I haven’t read a poetry book this year, but the last one I did get my hands on was Love Her Wild by Atticus and I really, really enjoyed that one! I am not super big on those kinds of books, but I do enjoy them every now and then. Just please don’t ask me to review them, because I do not know how to do that.

What Book Most Influenced Your Life

I believe that Quiet by Susan Cain really opened up my world to non-fiction books as well as to a better understanding of my personal needs as an introvert. It wasn’t an attack on extroverts, but it simply showcased how different the groups function from each other. It really explained how traits like shyness and social awkwardness aren’t necessarily part of being an introvert (although they obviously can be), but it’s much more about where you get your energy from and that introverts need to recharge by themselves after social events.

Book That Made You Ugly Cry

Pff … I don’t know? I just lately revisted some of my favourite quotes of Call Me By Your Name and that always makes me cry. But it wasn’t really “ugly crying with a scrunched up face” but rather “beautiful silent tears rolling down your face” instead. So, here’s Elio doing the real crying instead:

Book That Made You Laugh

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before FOR SURE! I giggled my way through a lot of this book. (Also, YAY for the recent news that the movie is getting a sequel!!! I can’t wait to settle in for another cuteness overload.)

Character You’d Like to Be For a Day

I’d quite like to trade places with Juliet Ashton from The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. That woman is living the dream to be honest. She is an author, has found love in all the ways that count most and gets to live on a beautiful British island. What a life!

Book So Good You Dreamt About It

I dream A LOT! Many of you can confirm that whenever I share the weird stories my brain comes up with, but … I can’t recall a book being part of it.

Book You DNFed

I’d like to think that I don’t DNF books but rather just take a break from them. Does that count as an answer? It kind of has to …

What Book Are You Excited to Read

ALL the books! But I have especially kept an eye on Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan. It sounds right up my alley:

A girl who can speak to gods must save her people without destroying herself.

A prince in danger must decide who to trust.

A boy with a monstrous secret waits in the wings.

Together, they must assassinate the king and stop the war.

In a centuries-long war where beauty and brutality meet, their three paths entwine in a shadowy world of spilled blood and mysterious saints, where a forbidden romance threatens to tip the scales between dark and light

I TAG THEE

I tag whoever wants to take part in this tag! It’s a lot of fun, although it lets you face some really tough questions.

So, what did you think of my answers? Have you read any of the books I mentioned? Could you relate to the struggle to find an answer sometimes? Let me know in the comments below!

The Rising Author Tag

I wasn’t actually tagged for this, but I saw The Rising Author Tag over at Beth @Reading Every Night and thought it would be really fun to take part. There are some definite rules to this, which I am not sure I will 100% comply to, but I still want to try my best.

RULES

  • No tagging back
  • Tag four people
  • Thank the person who tagged you
  • Come up with 10 new questions

QUESTIONS FROM BETH’S TAG

What is your current WIP about, and what’s its status? (ie. plotting, writing, editing, etc.)

This is already starting out more difficult than I thought, because I am working on several WIPs at the same time. Well, I guess I have neglected Arcadia a bit these past couple of months, but you all already know quite a lot about it anyway. So for the sake of making this post easier (and also to talk about something new), I am going to stick to the infamous #witchyWIP for this one.
It’s in the very early stages of writing, somewhere in the middle of chapter 12 to be exact, and about a family of witches who take in a girl who’s coven was eradicated for yet unknown reasons. The girl’s family was very powerful, so they are all cautious and scared about what she might be capable of and things get even trickier when she and the youngest son of the family perform a (forbidden) binding spell that ties them together forever. It starts from her childhood on and is told from other people’s POV but is meant to ultimately turn into her own POV as soon as she’s an adult. (I am working on a pitch that will make it sound more interesting – promise!)

Do you plot things out and/or outline, or just figure it out as you write?

I am someone who very much enjoys figuring out things as I go along, but for this one I have to plan ahead a little bit, because I am terrible with timelines and WILL mess them up if given the chance (Arcadia is living testimony of that).

What are some book ideas you want to write in the future?

FUTURE!? I have three unfinished WIPs and one finished one that needs desperate editing. I am going to try my best to stick to the current things before getting new ideas. However … one day I would like to write a contemporary YA book about a girl from Europe who goes on an exchange semester in the US (write about what you know and whatnot).

Out of the characters you’ve written so far, who are your favourites?

This is like asking a parent to pick a favourite child – HOW DARE YOU! But … if I must … I love my little confused but rational wolf girl aka Kasia from Arcadia.

What’s your writing routine, if any? (ie. snacks, music, time of day, location, etc.)

No real routine comes to mind when I think about me writing. I do prefer to have music on, sometimes even putting certain songs on repeat for certain chapters, but I have also had days where I needed complete silence. I’d say it all depends

Show your WIP’s aesthetic in images or words (or both)!

I think this might just be the project I have the least visual idea of, but here you go:

Bonus aesthetics for the other WIPs:

Arcadia
Dreamer
Break Up Buddy

What (or who) motivates you to write?

Honestly, it’s just everyone who ever read a snippet (or more) of my work and told me they liked it. Every single person who got invested in the fate of my characters. By now, that group of people I trust to share my projects with has grown far bigger than I initially thought possible and I hope you all know who you are because you are the best!!!

What do you find is the easiest part about writing? The hardest?

Easiest – having that scene in your head that needs to get written down no matter what. It’s okay if it doesn’t turn out right, but you just need to let the words out. I adore those moments because I have such a clear mental image of what I want to say.

Hardest – just generally sticking with a project, seeing it through when the going gets tough and you might get stuck at certain parts of the story.

What genre will you never try, and why?

It’s very unlikely that I will ever write historical fiction, because I hate research and doing those kind of stories without research is just … strange.

Share a tiny (or large) snippet/excerpt of your writing, if you’re comfortable!

This is the entire opening chapter if you like a real glimpse:

And here are two very random bits:

I hope you enjoyed those snippets! Definitely let me know what you think!

MY QUESTIONS

So, I am not sure I got this right, but I am also supposed to create 10 questions? Am I supposed to answer them myself as well? Does the next person only answer mine? Since I am confusion and I really like the questions I found on Beth’s tag, I am going to pass those on to the people I’ll tag.

I TAG THEE

Marie | Caro | The Orang-utan Librarian | Rami | WHOEVER WANTS TO DO THIS TAG

What are your thoughts on this? Did you enjoy another sneak peek into my writing life? Let’s chat about it in the comments!

What’s On My Bookshelf Tag

I don’t remember the last time I spent this much time on my own laptop, but it’s been really tough to find my work-life-balance so far (probably because I love work but whatever). Still, I don’t want there to only be trailer posts on the blog, so I was really happy that Kelly @Just Another Book in the Wall tagged me for the What’s On My Bookshelf Tag (originally created by Emily @Wicked Good Reads)! It’s a little hard to do without my physical bookshelf, but I will try my best!

A Library Book

S.: S. Hardcover in slipcase : [S.]: By Doug Dorst: S. : J. J. Abrams (Ship of Theseus)I don’t have any library books, however, I DO have a book in library optic and that’s S. by J.J. Abrams and Doug Dorst. That book is something else, which always makes it hard to explain why I still haven’t finished reading it.

A Book You Got As a Gift

Probably a couple throughout my days, but somehow the first one I thought of was Landline by Rainbow Rowell, which my very good friend Cristina sent me all the way from Portugal. I love her so much and not just because she up and decided to send me one of her books to keep.

A Childhood Book

Today, I am really just going with the first book that pops into my mind, which in this case is Momo by Michael Ende. I am pretty sure I did a book report on it and confused my entire class about what it’s about.

A Magical Book

Devils & Thieves (Devils & Thieves, #1)All books are magical in itself, because words are magic, but for the purpose of this tag I will go with Devils & Thieves. Despite the book having quite a few shortcomings, the magical system is really interesting!

A Romantic Book

Nicholas Sparks books are pretty much synonymous with romance, right? One of the ones I really, really liked was The Longest Ride. I guess I appreciate a good dual time line if done well.

A Steamy Book

I don’t really read all that many steamy books? But the first chapter of Save the Date by Morgan Matson was surprisingly steamy in comparison to the lack of romance (which I very much appreciated) during the rest of the book.

An Old Book

Persuasion? Persuasion! (Cause it’s my favourite Austen book.)

A Book That Makes You Happy and/or Laugh

I recently read Parsnips, Buttered by Joe Lycett, which is basically just a compilation of mails Joe wrote or received. Some of those stories are truly hilarious. He is one of my favourite British comedians, so I definitely laughed, while I simultaneously very much doubt it’s for everyone.

A Book That Makes You Emotional

We all know I cannot stop mentioning this book, but The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was really great and made me feel so many different things.

A Book Whose Ending You Disliked

Allegiant (Divergent, #3)? I just always pretend that book doesn’t even exist in the series.

A Book You Wish Had Illustrations

I am not sure if maybe there were a couple tiny illustrations in The Night Circus, but I would want a proper graphic novel for the magic that is this book!

A Book or Genre You Like to Read on a Rainy Day

I think I am a pretty simple girl and can read whatever comes my way on a rainy day. Lately it has been more contemporary and adult fiction admittedly though.

I TAG THEE

Anyone and everyone who wants to do this tag! I am unfortunately really not able to be super active in the community right now, so I have no idea who has done the tag or who would enjoy it. Link me up if you decide to give it a try though, so I can see your answers!

Did you like this tag? Could you relate to my answers? Let’s talk a little bit in the comments and I’ll try not to need a week to respond to them!
