The End of the Year Book Tag – 2021

I don’t do this tag every year, but whenever the fancy strikes me, I try to include it in the final month. If you want to check out my End of the Year Book Tag from 2020, just click here. It always feels a bit surreal that it’s already so late in the year that it makes sense to wrap things up and look ahead. Let’s get started!

Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?

YES! I’m currently in the midst of reading One Hundred Years of Solitude and I cannot wait to be done with it, because that means I can finally post my reading compatibility post with Pedro Pascal! I love the feature and intend to do more reading experiments in the next year as well, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t struggle at times, especially when books aren’t exactly in my wheelhouse.

One Hundred Years of Solitude

Do you have an autumnal (Spring) book to transition into the end of the year?

I stand by my answer from last year, meaning I don’t really plan my reads according to seasonal themes and topics. I could at least provide some sort of answer the last time, but I genuinely can’t think of anything that fits the prompt this time around.

Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?

I neither think I will get around to it, nor do I even want to attempt it, but I think The Coldest Touch by Isabel Sterling has probably gotten my attention most from the December releases. The official release date is December 9, 2021.

The Coldest Touch

Death drew them together. Life could tear them apart.
Elise is cursed. Every time she touches someone, she experiences how they will die. And when she predicts, but is unable to prevent, her brother’s death, Elise is desperate to escape her terrible gift.
Then she meets Claire, a vampire tasked with helping Elise master her rare powers – and recruiting her to the Veil, a secret organisation determined to protect the paranormal world at all cost.
At first, Elise is reluctant to work with a vampire, but when she predicts a teacher’s imminent murder, she’s determined to stop the violent death.
As Elise and Claire grow closer, Elise begins to wonder – can she really trust someone tasked with securing her loyalty? Someone who could so easily kill her? Someone who might hold the key to unravelling her brother’s mysterious death?

What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?

I’ve not been a particularly fast reader these past months, so I have no idea what’s realistically possible in this final month, but aside from the aforementioned One Hundred Years of Solitude, there’s definitely three books I own that I’d like to get to! Those books are: Where the Crawdads Sing, Take Me Home Tonight and Seven Days in June

Where the Crawdads Sing Take Me Home Tonight Seven Days in June

Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favorite of the year?

I’ve actually forgotten to mention If We Were Villains in this post so far, but I have a copy at home and I don’t know why I keep putting off reading it. All my friends love it, dark academia is my jam and it sounds so very promising. Maybe that’s exactly it though, I have high expectations for it and I don’t want to see them being crushed.

If We Were Villains

Have you already started making reading plans for 2022?

I notoriously do not really keep up with new releases but there are a few books I’m beyond excited for!

Portrait of a Thief

Ocean’s Eleven meets The Farewell in Portrait of a Thief, a lush, lyrical heist novel inspired by the true story of Chinese art vanishing from Western museums, about diaspora, the colonization of art, and the complexity of the Chinese American identity.
History is told by the conquerors. Across the Western world, museums display the spoils of war, of conquest, of colonialism: priceless pieces of art looted from other countries, kept even now.
Will Chen plans to steal them back.
A senior at Harvard, Will fits comfortably in his carefully curated roles: a perfect student, an art history major and sometimes artist, the eldest son that has always been his parents’ American Dream. But when a shadowy Chinese corporation reaches out with an impossible—and illegal—job offer, Will finds himself something else as well: the leader of a heist to steal back five priceless Chinese sculptures, looted from Beijing centuries ago.
His crew is every heist archetype one can imagine—or at least, the closest he can get. A conman: Irene Chen, Will’s sister and a public policy major at Duke, who can talk her way out of anything. A thief: Daniel Liang, a premed student with steady hands just as capable of lockpicking as suturing. A getaway driver: Lily Wu, an engineering student who races cars in her free time. A hacker: Alex Huang, an MIT dropout turned Silicon Valley software engineer. Each member of his crew has their own complicated relationship with China and the identity they’ve cultivated as Chinese Americans, but when Will asks, none of them can turn him down.
Because if they succeed? They earn fifty million dollars—and a chance to make history. But if they fail, it will mean not just the loss of everything they’ve dreamed for themselves but yet another thwarted attempt to take back what colonialism has stolen.

Heist stories are always fun and I can really see myself loving Portrait of a Thief! The fact that they take back stolen art from Western museums just makes it all the better. Also, please, look at that cover!

The Dead Romantics

Ghost meets The Bold Type in this sparkling adult debut about a disillusioned millennial ghostwriter who, quite literally, has some ghosts of her own, from national bestselling author Ashley Poston.
Florence Day is the ghostwriter for one of the most prolific romance authors in the industry, and she has a problem—after a terrible breakup, she no longer believes in love. It’s as good as dead.
When her new editor, a too-handsome mountain of a man, won’t give her an extension on her book deadline, Florence prepares to kiss her career goodbye. But then she gets a phone call she never wanted to receive, and she must return home for the first time in a decade to help her family bury her beloved father. For ten years, she’s run from the town that never understood her, and even though she misses the sound of a warm Southern night and her eccentric, loving family and their funeral parlor, she can’t bring herself to stay. Even with her father gone, it feels like nothing in this town has changed. And she hates it.
Until she finds a ghost standing at the funeral parlor’s front door, just as broad and infuriatingly handsome as ever, and he’s just as confused about why he’s there as she is.
Romance is most certainly dead . . . but so is her new editor, and his unfinished business will have her second-guessing everything she’s ever known about love stories.

I’ve been dying to get my hands on a copy of Dead Romantics! (no pun intended!) The book is technically available for request on NetGalley, but in case you haven’t heard yet, they started geo-blocking some titles. So, when I go on the site, it won’t even show up in the search results, robbing me even of the option to simply wish for it. But I suppose, I just have to remain patient.

Lastly, as I continue to be obsessed with The Wheel of Time show on Amazon, I’m getting more and more tempted to read the books. I’m just so enamored by the characters, but I’m also afraid that I’d be terribly bored by the books. They seem to have a rocky start … I’d still recommend watching the series though, even without prior knowledge of the 14 books with 700+ pages each!

That’s it from me! What are your year-end-reading-plans? Are you excited for 2022? Let’s chat!

Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag 2021

I do these tags really irregularly, but I took the time to put something up last year and had a lot of fun with it. So, this is my attempt at bringing the Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag back on a more regular basis. As in yearly. Hopefully.

*By clicking on the covers, you’ll be re-directed to the Goodreads pages of the books!*

BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ YET IN 2021

SoulswiftI’ve only given 5 stars to ONE (fiction) book this year, so I feel like that has to be the one I mention for this prompt? I’m talking about Soulswift, a breathtaking and soul-crushing standalone fantasy novel here. I’m honestly still shocked that not more people have discovered this book yet.

BEST SEQUEL YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2021

King of Scars (King of Scars, #1)The only books that were part of a series that I read this year were the Grishaverse books. I don’t feel super happy giving King of Scars this spot on the post, because I wasn’t actually as happy with it as I would have liked to be, but it’s the only one that makes sense. I should read more series again maybe …

NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET BUT WANT TO

For the Wolf (Wilderwood, #1)For the Wolf by Hannah F. Whitten is 100% up there! The book just sounds like it would be right up my alley and I’m really excited to dive into it once I can get my hands on a copy!

The first daughter is for the Throne.
The second daughter is for the Wolf.

MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR

The Taking of Jake LivingstonI don’t know when this happened or why it really even happened, but I found myself drawn to more horror-esque books these past years. It’s such a weird change for me, because I literally hate being terrified, but apparently I don’t hate being just a little freaked out? I don’t know, but I’m super hyped to read The Taking of Jake Livingston.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

My Year AbroadI was so very sad to not have connected with My Year Abroad. I felt like there should have been enough basis from my real life experiences to make this book an outstanding read for me, but somehow, I just wasn’t the right reader for it. I saw a lot of people enjoy the style of writing, while I found it a bit dragging and difficult to get through.

BIGGEST SURPRISE

Any Human HeartHonestly, before I started reading Any Human Heart, I really didn’t believe I was going to like it. I had read (or at least attempted to read) another book by the same author and I was incredibly bored. With this one though, despite me not really liking the main character, I felt it had so much emotion. In the end, I really enjoyed the journey we had together.

FAVOURITE NEW AUTHOR

You all know how much I adore Morgan Matson and how I will devour anything she writes? Well, I found an author with a similar style of writing, who evokes the same feelings in me. Through The Summer of Broken Rules, K.L. Walther managed to capture my heart and I would love to read future books by the author. This one transported me right to a summery vacation destination, so I’m here for more.

NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH

The Summer of Broken RulesTo further elaborate the previous answer, I really, really enjoyed The Summer of Broken Rules because it introduced me to Wit. He’s such a lovely love interest and I don’t know how else to put it. I like caring, at times dorky guys with a healthy dose of humor and he provides all that!

NEWEST FAVOURITE CHARACTER

Malibu RisingHmmm … that’s a tough one. I met some great characters throughout the year so far, but I think I might have to give this one to Nina Riva from Malibu Rising. I don’t know how to explain it, but I found a lot of myself in her, which made me feel uncomfortable at times. But I also loved it?

BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY

Ugh, I hate repeating answers so much, but Malibu Rising it is again. That book lost me a little bit in parts of the second half, but I felt a really big emotional connection to it and it definitely had me well up a couple times. Something about the setting and the family theme just got to me more than I expected.

BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY

Hana Khan Carries OnWhile Hana Khan Carries On definitely has some more serious elements to it that weren’t always easy to handle, Hana’s passion for her podcast and a career in the world of radio had be so excited and happy to keep reading this book. The fact that she also has a “You’ve Got Mail”-style romance was just the cherry on top.

FAVOURITE BOOK TO SCREEN ADAPTATION

Okay, this just HAS to be Shadow and Bone! Despite some flaws, the casting of this show was impeccable and gave us so much fun and heartwarming new content for the Grishaverse. I mean, that show made me utterly fall in love with Mal and while I liked him in the books (contrary to most of the fandom, I think), I ADORED the boy on the show. Cannot wait for season 2!

You can read more of my thoughts on the show here!

FAVOURITE POST YOU HAVE DONE THIS YEAR

This is also super easy to answer for me, which is rare to be honest. I’m not trying to say that I’m not usually proud of my own content, but I was especially happy to publish my “Are Tom Hiddleston and I compatible (readers)?” post a few weeks back. It is now developing into a full blown series, where I read the favorite books of celebs and see if we would be a match or not. I think it’s such a fun feature that combines my love for reading with my admiration of all things TV and film. I hope you enjoy reading it just a fraction of how much I loved creating this post/future series.

MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU’VE BOUGHT THIS YEAR

Where Hope Comes From: Poems of Resilience, Healing and LightLast year, I mentioned a poetry collection for this special prompt and I’m going to stick with that again this year. I think Where Hope Comes From is such a gorgeous book inside and out! It was written during the times of Covid, so I understand if not everyone is up for that emotional exploration, but I think it was really beautiful.

WHAT BOOKS DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR

If We Were Villains

Dark Age (Red Rising Saga, #5)

SO. VERY. MANY. But just because I’m a terrible person and haven’t read the books I mentioned in 2020 yet. I’m going to put those exact same ones here again.

If We Were Villains and Dark Age. are still on my shelf and I have no excuse as to why I haven’t picked them up. Literally none. (Other than the fact that the size of Dark Age scares me.)

I TAG THEE

I tag whoever wants to do this as well! If that’s you, then I tag YOU!!!

What did you think of my answers for the prompts of the tag? How is your reading year going so far? Let’s talk!!

The Wine Book Tag

I was tagged for this such a long time ago, I won’t even comment on the specific year. Let’s just say it has been an embarrassing time period, but Flo @FlowlessBooks asked me to do the Wine Book Tag and I think it is fun and … better late than never?

Box Wine – a book that people will judge you for liking but you like it anyway!

Let me think about all the embarrassing things I could have read and liked. I know that the author of Call Me By Your Name has some questionable views (did he sexualize underage girls or did I imagine that interview?) and that puts the age difference in the book in an even worse light. I know all that and I know the book is far from perfect, but I really loved it when I read it. I can’t just forget some of those beautiful quotes between the mess.

Read my review HERE.

Organic Wine – a book that doesn’t have any added crap in it and is just written perfectly

SoulswiftYou better not get tired of me mentioning Soulswift, but to me that book was perfect. As a standalone fantasy novel, it’s a rare bird anyway and it’s hard to get the pacing and content just right, but this book managed to do it all. I didn’t feel like I was overwhelmed with information or missing anything crucial. I was just heartbroken in the end, but that was to be expected …

Read my review HERE.

Gluehwein – a really spicy, wintry read

Don't Tell a SoulNot sure this really qualifies as spicy, but Don’t Tell a Soul definitely takes place during winter. I still remember the descriptions of mountains of snow and wading through snow storms to get to the manor. This story is not a ghost story, but is sure brings some along on the ride, which might work for the second part of the prompt? I hope so.

Read my review HERE.

Sauvignon Blanc – a really sharp and aggressive read that you couldn’t put down!

My mind immediately went to the Red Rising saga! I don’t usually get angry, but woah, I was shaking because I was so furious in parts of those books. They are also violent and brutal, but so well written and they keep you hooked. I still have Dark Age (the most recent book in the series) staring at me accusingly from my shelf, because I still haven’t picked it up. It’s so intimidating though!

Sevro will forever be one of my all time favourite characters and I cannot wait to see who they cast should they move forward with the TV show. My fingers are forever crossed for it to be Richard Harmon.

Read my review of the first book in the series HERE.

Pinot Noir – a book you didn’t expect much from but ended up getting blown away!

I try to not go into books with too high expectations to begin with. Hype is scary and can quickly drain joy once you read something. I’m, however, always a bit wary when it comes to World War II related content, be it alternate history or authentic, so I did not expect too much from the Wolf by Wolf duology, but it is now one of my favourite duologies out there. I wish more people had read it!

Read my review of the first book in the duology HERE.

Chardonnay – a good summer read that was super-zesty?

The Unexpected EverythingWhat constitutes a super-zesty read? Anyway, I might just ignore that bit, but summer is something I associate with Morgan Matson books. I could probably choose any of her stories and would be able to fulfill that part of the prompt, but I’m going with The Unexpected Everything, just because I thought of it first. As always, it has a cute love interest, dogs and some lovely self-exploration.

Read my review HERE.

Rose – a book that has a little bit of everything in it

Maybe Beartown? When I tried to write my review of the book, it was hard to find an aspect the story did not cover. It’s about community, family, culpability, love, friendship, responsibility and so much more. Really, no clue how to summarize it other than it wrecked my feels. There’s an HBO series coming out for it soon and I cannot wait to feel devastated again.

Read my review of the book HERE.

Shiraz – A full-bodied book that is dark and juicy

Ninth House (Alex Stern, #1)I’ve delved more and more into darker stories, but I kind of thought of Ninth House first. It has so much death and mystery, which qualifies for the dark part, but I also think the relationships could be categorized as juicy. The full-bodied aspect is probably the fact that it has a very complex secret society and includes a lot of information, which bordered on overload for me at times.

Read my review HERE.

Merlot – a smooth easy read with a soft finish

Tweet CuteTweet Cute! Everything about reading that book was easy and fun and soft and warm. It was like a modern day Young Adult version of You’ve Got Mail, just with a foodie aspect instead of bookstores. What’s softer than that?

Read my review HERE.

Champagne – Your Favourite Book

AS IF I HAD JUST ONE!?!?!?

I don’t know how anyone else does it, so I’m going to cheat a little bit. I’m just going to pick a random book that I gave a high rating to recently and haven’t mentioned in the post already.

We ended on The Light Between Worlds! It’s heartbreaking with a touch of Narnia, just more heavily focused on the returning part  and mental health rather than the one about being in a magical kingdom. I mentioned several trigger warnings in my review, because I think that’s really necessary with this read, but I loved it.

The Light Between Worlds

We’ve seen how bad I’m with sticking to tags, so I’ll just do the same I’ve been doing these past months: if you think you’d have fun with this yourself, CONSIDER YOURSELF TAGGED!!

What did you think of my picks for the different topics? Let’s talk!

Evermore Book Tag!

I wasn’t actually tagged for the Evermore Book Tag, but I saw it over at my friend Stephanie’s blog Adventures of a Bibliophile and felt like it would be fun to do. In all honesty, I always vibed more with evermore than with folklore, so, coming up with books to fit song titles should be fun!

RULES!

  • Link back to the original creator’s post: Ahaana’s at Windows to Worlds
  • Tag at least 5 people
  • Thank the person who tagged you and link back to their post!!
  • Feel free to use the graphics from Ahaana’s original post/or mine, but please credit back because they took a lot of time and effort to make (:

The SIMS Book Tag

Okay, so, how do I say this? I have been tagged for the Sims Book Tag all the way back in 2016/2017 by the lovely Cristina @My Tiny Obsessions and Loreva @La Book Dreamer and it really took me 4-5 years to actually post it. Why? I don’t know, but be aware that my shame is endless.

It’s just that I have recently gotten more into the Sims again, owning way too many expansion packs and add ons for that game than necessary and then I saw this still lingering in my drafts. I gathered, if I don’t do it now, I might never get to it. So, in the spirit of better late than never, I hope you do enjoy the following post!

**click on the covers to get re-directed to Goodreads**

THE ORIGINAL SIMS – THE BEST AUTHOR DEBUT

The Field Guide to the North American TeenagerI’ve mentioned this book so many times, but I just had so much fun with it? The Field Guide to the North American Teenager isn’t one of those stories with a finite end, but you still feel very satisfied with the outcome. It’s self-aware and funny and snarky – just immediately endeared me to check out all future releases by Ben Philippe.

Read my review here.

THE GRIM REAPER – THE SADDEST CHARACTER DEATH (SPOILER!!!)

I have mourned so many characters at this point, it is very hard to describe the absolute worst and saddest character death to me. However, I still very clearly remember the first (and therefore utterly devastating one), which was Dustfinger from the Inkworld trilogy. In case you haven’t read it, I am not going to talk about his fate in detail, but he will forever remain one of my all time favourite characters. He deserves the world!

SIMS GETTING STUCK – A CHARACTER THAT JUST GOT IN THE WAY

Don't Tell a SoulI’d like to think that most characters serve a purpose in a story, so, I am having a hard time coming up with someone who was really in the way. However, I feel like Maisie from Don’t Tell a Soul was someone who definitely complicated things in several situations. If she didn’t feel the need to constantly intervene, I think some events might have run smoother.

Read my review here.

SIMLISH – A BOOK WITH AMAZING WRITING

Beartown (Beartown, #1)Beartown just had absolutely amazing writing. There is a kind of omniscient narrator type voice and yet you always know which character you are currently dealing with. Ensemble casts, especially of that size, are never easy to handle, because it’s tricky to keep it all balanced, but Backman knew what he was doing. I’ve literally marked so many sentences in that book, it was a thing of beauty.

Read my review here.

EXPANSION PACKS – A SERIES WHERE THE BOOKS KEEP GETTING BETTER

I don’t know why this was the first book series that came to mind, but I am just going with my gut here – I think the Magicians books actually got better over time. It’s been a while, but I believe the second book was my favourite, but the third was still better than the first one, so it totally counts.

Read my reviews for The Magicians, The Magician’s Land and the Magician King.

SIM ROMANCE – THE WORST CASE OF INSTA-LOVE

A Pocketful of CrowsPhew, I tend to avoid books that insinuate insta love, so again, not easy to answer. (Yes, apparently I am going to say that about every single prompt.)

Okay, so, I didn’t review this book on the blog, because I really didn’t enjoy it, but A Pocketful of Crows was a very fairytale-esque story and had the main character and the love interest fall for each other in the most cliché of ways. It was immediate, it was founded on neither one of their qualities and just annoying, but thankfully that romance didn’t last. The real downfall of the book was the overall message for me though, because it suggested that you were right in exacting revenge upon people who wronged you.

CHEATS – A BOOK THAT WAS ENTIRELY UNREALISTIC

Famous in Love (Famous in Love, #1)Sometimes I think I can’t play the Sims without cheats anymore. Am I the only one?

Anyway, let’s talk books again. As someone who works in film and TV, I just didn’t find Famous in Love very realistic. Does that mean it’s not a fun and entertaining book? Of course not, but it’s just not how things would likely play out. And I will forever prefer the too-soon-cancelled TV version of this tale (which also wasn’t 100% authentic, but closer?).

Read my review here.

NEEDS FULFILLMENT – A CHARACTER THAT MADE ALL THE WRONG DECISIONS

AdmissionALL the wrong decisions is quite the heavy accusation. I think that Chloe from Admission made a lot of mistakes by not making very many decisions on her own. There’s no way she didn’t know that something was off, but by going along with what she was told to do (deciding not to speak up), she made all the wrong moves. I did enjoy that they didn’t glorify or redeem her actions entirely, but just explained how they came to be.

Read my review here.

ERROR CODE 12 – A SERIES THAT STARTED OFF WELL BUT WENT DOWNHILL FROM THERE

Divergent (Divergent, #1)Uhm, I don’t know? Divergent?

I thought the premise and concept was cool and I really enjoyed it in the beginning, but Allegiant? No, thank you. That book set itself up to fail in my opinion and it just felt kind of lost overall. Would have much rather prefered a different path for the series.

THE SIMS VORTEX – A SERIES THAT COMPLETELY ENGROSSED YOU

I’ve not spoken about this series in a long time, but RED RISING IS RIGHT THERE!! I feel bad for just staring at the brick of a book that is Dark Age on my shelf, but I am scared. These characters mean so much to me and they are in constant peril. I don’t know what kind of spell Pierce Brown put on me, but he has me heart and soul invested in this series. (check out a post I made about why the original trilogy is so great here)

Read my review of Red Rising, Golden Son, Morning Star and Iron Gold.

I TAG THEE

Since it took me so long to do this post, I don’t want to put anyone else on the spot. And I also genuinely think that a lot of people have already done the Sims Book Tag at this point, but if you think “hey, this is for me!”, then CONSIDER YOURSELF TAGGED!

Do you play the Sims? Do you have a favourite expansion pack? Let’s chat!

Naughty or Nice Tag

Was I tagged for this two years ago? Yes, I totally was. Since this is the Naughty or Nice Tag, I figured I should come clean right away … you know, as a precaution. However, I really want to thank the orang-utan librarian regardless, because I love getting tagged (even if I am perpetually late) and their blog is absolutely top notch!

The Rules

  • Tag & link the person who tagged you.
  • Tag and link Jenniely’s post, for she’s love to read everyone’s answers!
  • Tick/cross off the ones you’ve done
  • Tag another 10 people. (I am going to skip this step and just invite anyone who wants to do this to go ahead and consider themselves tagged!)

Received an ARC and not reviewed it

To start out, I want to say that I have never actually received a physical ARC. If we are taking eARCs into consideration as well though, there may have been 2-3 I didn’t end up reviewing. Look, I am not proud of it, but I didn’t enjoy them and didn’t even finish the books, which made me feel like I shouldn’t review them.

Have a less than 60% feedback rating on Netgalley

100% BABY!!!! I never thought it would happen, but I have been super diligent since I barely get approved anyway.

Rated a book on Goodreads and promised a full review was to come on your blog (and never did)

I don’t think so? Correct me if you remember that differently, but I can’t recall doing that.

Folded down a page of a book

I don’t like having my books dogeared or bent, folded, otherwise altered … but I guess I have done it at some point. No denying it unfortunately.

Accidentally spilled on a book

School books … yeah. (They were my own and not ones returned to the school after the term or anything like that). I hated it so much though.

DNF a book this year

Nope.

Bought a book purely because it was pretty with no intention of reading it

Sometimes they’re just so pretty. I want them. And then … I never read them. Maybe I intend to read them, but just don’t end up doing it …

Read whilst you were meant to be doing something else (like e.g. homework)

Oh, I have definitely done that. So sure.

Skim read a book

Again … school books … cause I could not care.

Completely missed your Goodreads goal

I once adjusted a goal … but like a month before the end of the year and not because I was missing it by  A LOT. So, I’d say that doesn’t count.

Borrowed a book and not returned it to the library

Aside from the fact that libraries aren’t my biggest friends in my country because they have none of the books I want, I think the last time I borrowed something was in elementary school. They would not have let it slide if I hadn’t returned that.

Broke a book buying ban

Probably?

Started a review, left it for ages then forgot what the book was about

I don’t remember what book exactly that would have been about, but I am so sure it happened at some point. Although … I probably never started the review to begin with, I just put off writing it in general until I forgot.

Wrote in a book you were reading

I have books where you’re SUPPOSED to write in them. So … I have! AND I was meant to do that!

Finished a book and not added it to your Goodreads

If so, not on purpose and not that I can remember.

Borrowed a book and not returned it to a friend

Since I would never want anyone to do that to me, I would never not return a book. NEVER.

Dodged someone asking if they could borrow a book

I know that I like my books way more pristine looking than the majority and if you want to have your book look well-read, that’s totally cool. But I want mine looking like they’re fresh off the press. And since a friend once had the contents of basically an entire pool dumped on a book she was borrowing from me and then tried to give it back to me like it was no big deal … I tend to avoid that stuff.

Broke the spine of someone else’s book

I would NEVER!

Took the jacket off a book to protect it and ended up making it more damaged

No?

Sat on a book accidentally

Definitely. But nothing happened. No books were harmed in the process.

As mentioned above, if YOU want to do this tag – consider yourself tagged!!! What did you think of my answers? Could you relate?

Spooky Scary Writing Tag

I meant to do something else today, but this seemed oddly more fitting for today. You know that I enjoy doing Write Tags every now and then and with NaNoWriMo RIGHT THERE and it being Halloween and all, it just works? The Spooky Scary Write Tag was created by Emma @Emma T. Fink but I saw it over at Caro’s blog. Therefore, this is once again not a creation of my own, but I am so, so looking forward to doing this anyway!

A lot of the questions are general ones about writing, however, a couple are about a specific WIP. In those cases, I will be answering for the Football WIP! I haven’t talked about it a whole lot, but most recently mentioned it in the All Hallows Write Tag.  I haven’t changed the blurb since, but I have worked on it mentally … you’ll still have to contend with this one though:

After a devastating loss, teenager Ivy moves to her estranged family in a small town in Texas. All she wants is to get through school as fast as possible and start over away from everything and everyone she knows, but this town has other plans. She never intended to get mixed up in the lives of the local Football team, who are worshiped like heroes in the community, but soon their drama becomes hers. If she can face her grief and guilt, she might just be able to find a new family in them.

Haven’t shared this aesthetic with anyone yet, so … it’s a premiere!! One that will likely only make sense to those that know more about the story and the main character.

1.Ghost // Have you ever originally put a character/scene/theme in the book and then later taken it out?

Character – no
Scene – yes
Theme – yes

I usually tend to stick with characters, although I will not hesitate to alter their personality/appearance/general role in the story. But when it comes to scenes and themes, I am often less attached.

2. Bat // Most misunderstood character in your WIP?

I feel like that has to be Taylor. He has this carefree attitude and seems like nothing in the world fazes him, but it does. His bad boy/charmer image is just a way to hide what’s happening on the inside for him. In his heart, he’s a good guy. He’s just really hesitant to attach to anyone.

3. Jack-O-Lantern // What’s your most common source of inspiration to write?

I can find inspiration in almost anything and everything! Sometimes it’s a song, sometimes it’s a theme in a TV show that I would like to explore on my own. Very often it’s just daydreams that get stuck in my head and need further development or I will never ever get rid of them again.

4. Zombie // Preferred form of writerly fuel? Coffee, tea, etc.

Tea. Always.

5. Vampire // Cheesiest trope that made it into your novel?

Okay, this is actually from the only novel I finished, as I don’t want to talk about WIPs in that much detail, but … Break Up Buddy literally ended with a proposal on live television. It was Hallmark-level-cheese perfection!

6. Spider // What’s a character in your WIP that’s fine from afar, but you would NOT want to interact with if they ever got close?

I … don’t know? Especially in the Football WIP, I don’t have any “villains” per se. There’s definitely conflict, but the characters are all just humans with flaws and mistakes. I don’t think I would really mind being close-ish to any of them. I might imagine Laurie stressing me out … let’s go with that if I have to answer.

7. Frankenstein’s Monster // Ever combined two characters into one/split one character into two?

Dang, my answers are so boring, but … no. I don’t think that option ever even crossed my mind.

8.Skeleton // Best tips for adding in character baggage without info-dumping?

Ha! I didn’t know I was supposed to offer actual helpful insight. Uhm, I would be lying if I said I didn’t struggle with that every now and then. I like to hint at past trauma/baggage in dialogue and actions until a certain reveal becomes inevitable. That way you prepare the reader that something is coming, even if they don’t yet have the full picture and/or understand it all. I’m not saying that always works and very much depends on the baggage you intend to include, but I definitely prefer behavioral clues rather than just lengthy explanations myself.

9. Cat // What’s a polarizing writing/bookish opinion that you have?

I don’t believe that you HAVE to or SHOULD write every day. There’s definitely people who it’s helpful for to write on a regular basis, but if you are not feeling it one bit and hate what you create because you forced yourself to write, what’s the point? I’d rather take a break and clear my head, maybe find new inspiration and then get back to it with all the more motivation. Obviously, that’s tied with a bit of self discipline and making sure a short break doesn’t turn into weeks and months of inactivity. But to each their own!

10. Demon // Most frequent writing distraction?

TV shows! I think I can handle not checking social media all the time, but when I get enamored with a TV show, I forget all other standing responsibilities and live in that world in my head. Especially my own stories take a back seat then, even if they shouldn’t.

What did you think of this tag? Could you relate to my answers? Let’s chat!

The Fall Book Tag

I was tagged for this, brace yourselves, back in 2017. That is the shelf-life a lot of my tags have to endure until I get to them and I am so incredibly sorry for that. I’m not sure if Beth @Reading Every Night will even see this post now (I miss her on the blogosphere), but I’m doing the Fall Book Tag anyway. The weather is slowly getting colder, I can wear layers again … I just like the transition to this new season and wanted to celebrate that by doing a tag (and I haven’t posted anything else yet this week).

RULES

  • Please link back to Bionic Book Worm, as the creator of this tag. She wants to see your answers.
  • Use her graphics—if you want to.
  • Have fun!

*click on the covers to get redirected to the Goodreads pages of the books. If I have reviews up, they will be linked in the titles in the text bits!*

CRISP FALL AIR – a book that felt fresh and new

Charming as a VerbI’m like 11 pages into this, so maybe not the best judge, but I just get exactly that fresh and crisp vibe from Charming as a Verb. If you’ve followed me for a bit, you will have noticed my utter enthusiasm for Ben Philippe’s first book, The Field Guide to the North American Teenager, and his style of writing that I really enjoy. Everything flows so easy and feels natural.

HOWLING WINDS – an ending that blew you away

A Deadly Education (Scholomance, #1)This award 100% goes to A Deadly Education, because it was a really fun book to read for me. I liked it a lot, but also felt like it could just be a standalone and then THE FINAL LINE HIT ME! It made me question everything I had just read and I love it when that happens. Seriously cannot wait for you all to be able to read that book too!

COMFY SWEATERS – a book that gave you the warm and fuzzy’s

Tweet Cute*me going through my pile of books filled with sadness and misery* – Ah, yes, here we have something!

Tweet Cute was one of those books that just made you smile. The banter is fun and the grilled cheese references WILL make you hungry. But that’s just what you’ll have to endure for a lovely contemporary romcom sometimes.

BRIGHT COLORS – a cover with either red, yellow or orange in it

Burn Our Bodies DownI’m sure there’s plenty of people who already love and adore Burn Our Bodies Down, but I will never be one of them. Something about that book just rubs me the wrong way and I did not enjoy it. However, it fits the category like a glove!

LEAF FIGHT – a book with non stop action

The Black VeinsAnother book I am currently reading (and please don’t ask me why I can’t focus on just one book, cause I don’t know) is The Black Veins. There’s magic and road trips and monsters and people getting kidnapped. I’m not even at the halfway mark and so much has happened!

PUMPKIN SPICE – your most anticipated read

This is a bit tricky for me, because I’m at a point in my book blogging life where I just don’t keep very much up to date with new releases. Sometimes something catches my eye, but I have so much backlisted that I would be completely helpless without some of my blogging buddies and blogger blast mails from publishers to keep me up to date.

Something that releases soon though (October 6, 2020) is Spoiler Alert and it sounds so much up my alley:

Spoiler Alert

Marcus Caster-Rupp has a secret. While the world knows him as Aeneas, the star of the biggest show on TV, Gods of the Gates, he’s known to fanfiction readers as Book!AeneasWouldNever, an anonymous and popular poster.  Marcus is able to get out his own frustrations with his character through his stories, especially the ones that feature the internet’s favorite couple to ship, Aeneas and Lavinia. But if anyone ever found out about his online persona, he’d be fired. Immediately.

April Whittier has secrets of her own. A hardcore Lavinia fan, she’s hidden her fanfiction and cosplay hobby from her “real life” for years—but not anymore. When she decides to post her latest Lavinia creation on Twitter, her photo goes viral. Trolls and supporters alike are commenting on her plus-size take, but when Marcus, one half of her OTP, sees her pic and asks her out on a date to spite her critics, she realizes life is really stranger than fanfiction.

Even though their first date is a disaster, Marcus quickly realizes that he wants much more from April than a one-time publicity stunt. And when he discovers she’s actually Unapologetic Lavinia Stan, his closest fandom friend, he has one more huge secret to hide from her.

With love and Marcus’s career on the line, can the two of them stop hiding once and for all, or will a match made in fandom end up prematurely cancelled?

I TAG THEE

Since it took me, hold up … checking again, 3 years to do this tag, I just kind of want to leave it open for anyone who wants to join in no the fun. IF YOU READ THIS (and you want to do it) CONSIDER YOURSELF TAGGED!

What did you think of my answers? Let’s talk!

Never Have I Ever – Writing Tag!

One of my favourite blogger buddies, The Orang-utan Librarian, has tagged me for the Never Have I Ever Writing Tag. I read their answers and it was great to read and I implore you to check out the post yourself, that is, after you read mine, because this is going to be fun!

The original was created by the Long Voyage – so definitely check out that here!

NEVER HAVE I EVER …

. . . started a novel that I did not finish.

Ha! That’s a good one!! I started about 15 different stories and finished one of them. My track record in that department is abysmal.

. . . written a story completely by hand.

I … don’t think so? I think I started stories and maybe I’ve written a short story here or there by hand, but definitely not a full one. I already get annoyed with regular editing, I can’t imagine having to transfer everything to my laptop first.

. . . changed tenses midway through a story.

Not on purpose. I think, sometimes, when I return to a story after a long time, I have to get back into the tense maybe and mess it up a bit. But never on purpose.

. . . not researched anything before starting a story.

What is research? No, in all honesty, I probably should do research sometimes, but I love winging it and then despairing in the middle of the story because I have no clue what I am doing. I really do the bare minimum sometimes …

. . . changed my protagonist’s name halfway through a draft.

Nope, not the protagonist’s name, but definitely some side characters.

. . . written a story in a month or less.

YES! The one and only story I ever finished writing – Break Up Buddy – was one I did during NaNoWriMo. I was so proud to have finished it in a month and I still am. I admire people that just throw out stories in days or weeks (and there are more than you might think).

. . . fallen asleep while writing.

I don’t think so?

. . . corrected someone’s grammar irl / online.

Guilty as charged. I’m not running around correcting everyone all the time, but sometimes I just couldn’t not say anything? Most of the time I just keep it to myself, especially since I make plenty of mistakes myself.

. . . yelled in all caps at myself in the middle of a novel.

Like … “started writing in all caps unrelated to the story, because I was frustrated with myself”-all caps? That’s not really something I do?

. . . used “I’m writing” as an excuse.

I just don’t think that people leave me alone or listen to me when I say that I am writing. At least I know a certain someone who will interrupt me like a thousand times, even if I have made it clear that I was trying to focus on writing. Guess that excuse doesn’t fly with people in my life?

. . . killed a character who was based on someone I know in real life.

I’m not even sure I’ve killed a character on page yet, so that’s a no? But also, no one is based on someone I personally know. On actors? That’s a whole different story … but not actual real life friends and/or enemies.

. . . used pop culture references in a story.

These questions should be so easy to answer, but I really have to think hard about them. I am pretty sure there must have been some kind of reference, right? Something to indicate a time period? I just literally can’t think of a single example …

. . . written between the hours of 1am and 6am.

100% YES!

. . . drank an entire pot of coffee while writing.

I don’t drink coffee ever, so that’s a clear no from my side. (Tea all the way!)

. . . written down dreams to use in potential novels.

I actually have a designated journal for my dreams. They are wild sometimes, people! I still like the timey-wimey one where Adam Driver turns out to be my son, but I am technically younger than him? We shall, however, never mention the dolphin story again. That was borderline body horror and that’s not my genre …

. . . published an unedited story on the internet / Wattpad / blog.

Yes, yes and yes? There used to be this website called figment, where I posted a lot of my really, really old stuff. But also recently, totally!

Arcadia is on wattpad. Click here to read it!
Dreamer was on wattpad, but is not published there anymore …
The witchy WIP is published on a private blog that’s password protected. However, friends can request the password and I’m pretty easygoing in sharing it.

. . . procrastinated homework because I wanted to write.

Absolutely! I have to agree with the Orang-utan Librarian here, I sometimes even spaced out in class to write my story. And honestly, even at work from time to time (imagine me doing retail work and there being zero customers for over an hour).

. . . typed so long that my wrists hurt.

That happens so easily, but also, I just don’t have the best set up for writing.

. . . spilled a drink on my laptop while writing.

Thank the heavens that never happened!!! THE HORROR!

. . . forgotten to save my work / draft.

No? I think I forgot to save something for school a couple times, but never the really important stuff aka my stuff.

. . . finished a novel.

As in, written a beginning, middle and end to a story? Yes. As in, edited the story to make it presentable and potentially marketable? No. no no no.

. . . laughed like an evil villain while writing a scene.

I WISH!

. . . cried while writing a scene.

I was close, but I don’t think so?

. . . created maps of my fictional worlds.

YES! But funny enough, not for a fantasy world, but rather a contemporary novel instead. I just printed out maps from Google maps from places that I’ve been to and liked/lived at. It was hilarious in hindsight.

. . . researched something shady for a novel.

I think I researched some illnesses and symptoms. Or “what to do when someone has a seizure”, but that’s not really all that shady, is it?

I TAG THEE

I would love for the sister-writer-duo Nyx and Marie to do this tag and also Caro!

I hope you enjoyed this tag and if you feel like doing it yourself, GO FOR IT! I’d love to chat some more in the comments and also feel free to ask me anything, if you want to know more!

The “I Should Have Read That” Book Tag

I wasn’t very consequent with my Friday is tag day proclamation, but the lovely Kirstie Ellen @Upside-Down Books tagged me for the “I Should Have Read That” Book Tag and it seemed deliciously fun. I feel like I’ll have to expose myself with some of those answers, so, I want to thank her for the opportunity and hope you all enjoy it!

RULES

  • Thank the person who tagged you and link back to their post
  • Link to the creator’s blog (booksnest.co.uk) in your post
  • Answer the questions below
  • Tag 10 others to take part (I’ll just leave this up to whoever wants to do it)
  • ENJOY THE TAG!

A book that a certain friend is always telling you to read

Beartown (Beartown, #1)Alright, so, Lois never specifically urged me to read Beartown in any way, but she knows me so well and every time I see her talk about it, I just want to pick it up right away … I just haven’t even bought it yet …

For real though, it’s a small town sports drama with deep human emotions and I just know I’d be so here for it!

A book that’s been on your TBR forever and yet you still haven’t picked it up

Testament of YouthI actually have briefly picked it up, because I adore the movie with all my heart, but I never made it all the way through Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain. It’s quite heavy and since they are her diaries, it’s all real life stuff and I just couldn’t … I think I’d rather rewatch the movie.

A book in a series you’ve started,  but haven’t gotten around to finishing yet

Dark Age by Pierce Brown is still chilling on my shelf. That book scares me SO much! I don’t know why, but it’s just MASSIVE and I haven’t really read any big books like that for a long time and I know it’s likely going to wreck me emotionally on top of it all too.

Just look at it compared to some other books on my TBR …

A classic you’ve always liked the sound of, but never actually read

War and Peace? I don’t know … it’s just that I know quite firmly that I don’t enjoy very many classics, but I quite like movie adaptations of Russian materials, so that’s one of the few I could think of.

A popular book that it seems everyone but you has read

HA! I know that one! Harry Potter, and I truly mean the entire series. Sometimes (looking at you Percy Jackson), I start a series and then life gets in the way and I forget to continue, but I’ve literally never picked up the Harry Potter books and at this point, I just don’t see it happening.

A book that inspired a film/TV adaptation that you really love, but you just haven’t read it yet

The GoldfinchLet’s not go overboard by saying I really loved loved The Goldfinch, but I loved the trailer? I enjoyed the movie, I just thought it would have been a better fit for a limited series or some other longer format. Anyway, haven’t read it, but can definitely see the appeal.

A book you see all over Instagram but haven’t picked up yet

The Priory of the Orange TreeHmmm … a confession that wasn’t even prompted her but that is coming regardless is that I’m not really in the bookstagram realm. A book I kept seeing everywhere, especially on Twitter too was The Priory of the Orange Tree and it’s another very daunting size.
