Seven Years of Blogging – I’M STILL HERE! (+Giveaway!)

SEVEN YEARS! It never ceases to amaze me for just how long I’ve been doing this. When I started Life and Other Disasters, I was still in uni and even had a previous blog from High School on my track record that barely lasted a couple weeks. In my mind, there was no way I would keep going for so long. I won’t lie to you, the seven-year-itch has caught me too, and there were times I wondered if I should maintain it at all or maybe let it slide into oblivion with shinier platforms like Twitter, Instagram and YouTube (don’t even get me started on TikTok, I’m too old for that one) out there to take over.

But this isn’t about how things have moved on a bit or how I feel like a lot of people forget about the work bloggers put into their posts. There were definite ups and downs, sometimes entire months without any posts other than trailers. I am guilty of not always bringing my A-game myself. However, I found, no matter what life threw at me, I never regretted having this blog to come back to. But most of all, I cherish the people I have met on here that have become some of my dearest friends. I would never ever want to miss you!! (I hope you know who you are)

So, basically, I’m saying I am still here! And even though I have no clue what the future holds and for how long I will stay here, I think seven years is a mighty fine reason to celebrate. I haven’t done this in a while, but I really wanted to give back to everyone who takes the time to visit Life and Other Disasters, like and comment on a regular basis. It really means so much to me, whether you’ve been sticking around for years or have just recently discovered the blog! Long story short: I’m doing a giveaway!! You lot have been the greatest at doing Q&As and other alternatives I have tried these past years, I thought it was about time I did one of these once more. And nothing seemed more fitting than to take a look at some of my favourite reads from the past years and let the winner choose one of the books I am suggesting.

6-Year-Blogiversary: I AM STILL DOING THIS!?

I know I keep saying this every year, but I truly can’t believe that it has been 6 years already. On the one hand, blogging has been such a constant part of my life, that I don’t really remember what it was like without it. However, at the same time, I never truly thought that I would stick with this for such a long time. I mean, it’s been literal years, and by now I don’t feel like I will ever really quit doing this, even if there are months that I don’t post a whole lot.

Usually, I try to do something special for these kind of milestones, because I want to give back to the people who made all of this possible – YOU! Even if I keep repeating myself, I insist that it’s necessary to really say this – blogging would be dull without the people. If there had been zero interactions, this would have all ended a long time ago, but instead (even during the tough times) this community has become a refuge and place of friendship. I love talking about all day every day kind of situations, the latest binge-watch or more personal, in depth subjects with some of you. It brings me joy to know that there is someone on the other side of this screen who reads this and maybe agrees with what I had to say or even if they don’t, try to talk to me and have a friendly discussion. It makes this already pretty small world a little smaller and therefore make me feel closer to all of you.

Back to my original point, I am currently not exactly at my most inspired or swimming in money. Last year (check out the post here), I did a giveaway of my own art work in return for Q&A material from you. As I said, I am not at my most creative at the moment and therefore I was wondering if you would be interested in a repeat of that?

Basically, here is how it works:

  • You ask me questions you always wanted to know the answer to in the comments or on Twitter – nothing is off limits!
  • You additionally state that you want to enter the giveaway – the artwork will be a surprise! (ONE winner will be chosen at random)
  • All of this should be done by June 14th, 2019
  • If you are not yet 18+, please have the permission of your parents to enter. I will need personal information should you win the giveaway

If this flops, we will just pretend this never happened and I only did a low-key blogiversary celebration. If it is a success though, then I will post the answers to your questions next weekend and inform the winner separately. Lastly, once again a big fat THANK YOU from me to all of you!

5-Year-Blogiversary: Am I a Blogosaurus yet?

5 YEARS!?!?!?! I feel old … and proud! Which makes me an old and proud blogosaurus I suppose? (This was a running gag among some bloggers and myself about how people in the community, who stick around for so long, are basically dinosaurs.) Looking back, I cannot even imagine life without blogging anymore. What did I do in my spare time? Why was I even at my laptop? (school work and TV shows still existed, but that doesn’t seem as compelling of a reason …) What would I do without the many, many amazing people that have come into my life through blogging alone? Gosh, this is getting me emotional already.

It definitely hasn’t always been easy. There have been good and bad times – getting my first eARC, stats envy, reading slumps and very necessary weeks of me disappearing on binge-watches. I think we all have those moments where we doubt ourselves or what we are doing, but it’s only important how we come out the other side. This blog and the community that comes with it has been through it all with me – uni, graduating, fun and terrible jobs alike, my lengthy “vacations” and now this stretch of me trying to find my way as an adult. Some days I am just in awe to still have you all visit this little corner of the interwebs and I appreciate it so much.

As many of you know, I really wanted to do a giveaway for this milestone. It’s a special one to me, because I am turning 25 this summer and that means this blog was with me for more than a fifth of all my life. That is just crazy intense! Unfortunately, I am still on a job search, so a book giveaway just isn’t possible right now. I wish it were different, but things will change and I will be able to hopefully do one in the future again (maybe for my birthday in August? No promises, but here’s to hoping!).

However, to make this milestone a little fun for all of us, I was thinking we could do a little Q&A with a bonus! I would love it if you sent me some questions, that I will then answer in a separate post, via email and I will randomly choose one person from all those people who send in questions who will receive some of my new art work. For those of you unfamiliar with what I do, here is a little taste from my art insta page:

So, please send those questions to impossiblegirlblog@gmail.com and also include 5 of your favourite TV show/movie characters. To enter in this giveaway, you have to be 18+ years or have permission from your parents to share personal information, such as your name and full address with me should you win. None of the information you give me will be shared! Please, also be aware that I can only take people into consideration for the giveaway who send me an email, however, you are free to send me questions for the Q&A in the comments as well. The deadline to enter in the giveaway is June 12th 2018.

Lastly, THANK YOU for being here, for commenting, liking and following this blog! Thank you for being the amazing person that you are and for letting me be part of your life! I probably wouldn’t still be here blogging and celebrating if it weren’t for you all!

Surprise 1,000 Follower Giveaway!

1000f

Something really, really exciting happened before the end of 2016 – Life and Other Disasters made it to more than 1000 followers on WordPress and I couldn’t believe my eyes. However, I was so busy and distracted with my last weeks at work, that I simply couldn’t find the time to tell you all how much I appreciate the continued support and engagement on the blog! Now that I have time again, I plan to be way more active not only on here, but also on your blogs as well (believe me, I feel terrible for being so bad at bloghopping in the past months)! Here’s a list of what you can except this year:

  • A new feature called #CurrentlyWatching: I am going to highlight one of the TV shows I am currently obsessed with on a weekly basis. Let me warn you, not all shows will be suitable for all people, but if you are ever unsure, I got you! I am the Queen of TV after all 😉 my recommendations rarely disappoint. I am running a poll on Twitter right now to see which day would be best for the feature, if you have a preference for that, you can vote here.
  • Arcadia/writing updates: yes, yes, I have been terrible with those, but I want to jog it down to having so little time and being tired all the time. I have no intention of abandoning this project. Quite the contrary.
  • Catching up on reviews/tags: We shall never mention how many tags I have backlogged, however, it is very unlike me to have reviews waiting to be written. I decided for myself that I won’t review EVERY book that I read, because I don’t want to expose myself to the unnecessary stress of staring at the empty file because I don’t know what to say. I still intend to review about 80-90% though.

Now on to the part you probably have been waiting for – the giveaway! There are no words to express how much gratitude I feel for having you all and being able to share my thoughts and ramblings on this blog. THANK YOU doesn’t even begin to cover it. It’s an outlet that has become so very important to me and such a big part of my life, that I could not and don’t want to imagine my future without it. I’ve met the best of people who have become dear friends through blogging and I see myself, the blog and this community changing as time passes too. Again, I can only say thank you for being along on the ride with me, with all of us, and I hope you’ll stay a little longer!
So, I’ve thought about this for a long time. It would have made sense to give away another book or something bookish at least, but I wanted it to be more personal. First I thought I’d make Life and Other Disasters bookmarks, but that was a tad too pricey, so in the end, I came up with the idea of making a surprise package inspired by my hometown Vienna. If picked out a couple of trinkets (but no food, because peoples, that is a nightmare to send in the mail) that I won’t go into detail about because it’s supposed to be a surprise (duh!). It will also include a handwritten letter, because I just love to do that, not because I actually know what to say.

Here are some guidelines up front:

  • I am giving away ONE (maybe two if enough people take part) Surprise Vienna-inspired package. The giveaway is international!
  • You have to be 18+ or have the permission of your parents to give me details such as your full name and address. None of the information will be shared!
  • The giveaway starts today (January 14, 2017) and ends on February 1, 2017 (12 AM)
  • The winner will be chosen randomly and contacted via email. They will have to answer within 48 hours or I will choose someone else.
  • My theme won’t display the Rafflecopter widget properly, so please either click on the image or link below.
  • Have fun!

Birthday Haul & 700 Follower Giveaway

bday

Hello lovely people out there! As you may have noticed, IT’S MY BIRTHDAY! And I simply have to share the excitement.

Look at all the amazing things I received today and that’s not even all. I finally have the Raven Cycle and The Girl from Everywhere, but there is still a mystery book on it’s way to me! Also, HAMILTON! Now I can just listen to it all day, every day, even in the car. Furthermore, I received tickets for Luke Mockridge, one of my favourite comedians out there. Have any of you ever heard from him? All of it was wrapped in flamingo wrapping paper (as can be seen in the background). My parents know me so well and they are some of the best people out there (and crazy too, because that was all way more than I deserved!).

Thanks to the amazing help of some of you people (I hope you know who you are! I love you for all your support) we have managed to get 700 Followers even before my birthday today. I want to keep this really short and simple. I believe that birthdays are there to not only celebrate yourself, but also to celebrate the people in your life and the blogging community is a huge part of mine. Therefore I want to do at least a little something and host a giveaway.

Here’s how it goes:

  • I am giving away ONE book up to 15 Euros. The giveaway is international, as long as Book Depository ships to you!
  • You have to be 18+ or have the permission of your parents to give me details such as your full name and address. None of the information will be shared publicly!
  • The giveaway starts today (3rd of August) and ends on 3rd of September (12 AM)
  • The winner will be chosen randomly and will be contacted via mail and has to answer within 48 hours or I will choose someone else.
  • Have fun!

March 2016 Wrap-Up

MarchWU

I had a VERY ambitious TBR last month and I think I didn’t do all that bad to be honest! Despite work, despite me wanting to catch up on TV shows, despite everything that has happened – I read 7 books! That’s quite neat, right? Let’s check out what I originally planned and what I actually read.

  • Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard (3.5 stars)
  • A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab (4 stars)
  • Firewalker by Josephine Angelini (4 stars)
  • Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare
Okay, that book has been sitting on my shelf and taunting me for almost the entire month, but I really do want to read it with Cristina and Cátia and somehow the mail service messed up because Cátia still doesn’t have her copy … It’s torture!
  • Kindred Spirits by Rainbow Rowell (4 stars)
  • Splintered, Unhinged and Ensnared by A.G. Howard
For this one there simply wasn’t time. That happens! Also, I may or may not buddy read the first book in the series with Marie. That would be so much fun! Our buddy reads are always hilarious with us just freaking out over Twitter.
  • The Shannara Chronicles: The Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks
Honestly, I am just not over what happened on the show and I am really scared of what’s in the book now. I am not sure I can relive a certain thing twice within a short time span.

Other books that weren’t on the list:

Glass Sword (Red Queen, #2)   A Gathering of Shadows (Shades of Magic, #2)   Firewalker (Worldwalker, #2)   Kindred Spirits   Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda   The Siren   Ghetto

As always, click on the titles above to get to the reviews (or on the name of the people I read the books with, to get to their reviews) and on the covers to be redirected to Goodreads!

InOtherNews

In a very rare event, I got to meet Nicholas Sparks for the briefest of moments. I have read more than 10 books written by him and I know that he is famous worldwide, so I didn’t really expect to encounter him in Vienna one day, but it happened. It was brief and there was no chance of asking or saying anything to him, but it was still such a cool experience. Read my post about it here!

I got my first book swag!!! It was so cool to actually get something relevant in the mail and I just took the letter with me to work.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
It was a really neat letter by Katie McGarry, a bookmark and ribbons with quotes from the Thunder Road books. I loved it! And speaking of that particular series, you can now win a copy of the first book – Nowhere But Here! Because you crazy people whom I adore like no one else have made it to 500 Followers here on WordPress! As a little Thank You, I have organised a Giveaway, which you can check out here!
