The Book Love Tag

booklove

We are getting closer and closer to Valentine’s Day, so I thought it was about time that I did the Book Love Tag that Anette @Anette Reads created and tagged me for! It has some tough questions in there, but I am excited to spread some bookish love!

Your favorite book couple.

I have an undying love for MALEC and even though I don’t need to write it in capital letters all the time, I do. Because I am just that excited whenever I think about them! Yet the thing is, I am not sure they are my OTP … I have so many OTPs, but because they are currently on my mind, Alec and Magnus from the Mortal Instruments are the answer for this one.

Your top 3 book boy/girlfriends.

Hmm … another tough one … those are the most recent additions to my bookish harem I guess.

  • Darrow (Red Rising) – If I still need to explain this, I have not done my fangirling right.
  • Mark Watney (The Martian) – He is one of my all time favourite characters. Maybe a tad too old right now, but whatever.
  • Wil (The Shannara Chronicles) – I still need to read the book, but from his TV show version I’d say I’ll like him … a lot.

Imagine your favorite book couple. Who would propose, and how? (If there’s already been a proposal: who would be more into organizing the wedding?)

But … if I tell you here if they get married or not then that will be a Spoiler … or does everyone already know? Either way, if it were about the organizing, Magnus would so be in charge! He throws the best parties already, so he’d surely do a great job with his own wedding.

Unpopular opinions time! Name a popular pairing you can’t stand.

FourTris? I don’t even know …  I really liked them in the beginning but by the time Allegiant rolled around, those two did not work for me anymore. Sorry?

What’s your favorite and least favorite romance trope?

Favorite: Pretend relationships that turn into something real! I love, love, love that sort of stuff!

Least Favorite: Insta-love – just no! I want to see the “falling in love”-part, the development of feelings. THAT IS THE BEST BIT OF THE STORY!

Do you ship non-canon couples often? Name some if you do.

I can’t say Zach and Maggie from Saving Hope or Gabby and Severide from Chicago Fire, right? Barely anyone even knows who they are … and they’re not from a book.

Hmmm … Quentin and Eliot from the Magicians trilogy works though!!! Eliot was always into Q, I am sure of that … maybe if Q had been into men, he’d have had a much easier life. I doubt it, but who knows, right?

Your opinion on love triangles. Go!

I actually like them. If they are done poorly it’s a shame and if it’s more of a love hectagon, it’s silly too. But a well done love triangle, I can totally roll with that.

Favorite and least favorite love triangle?

Favorite: Tessa-Will-Jem! Always and forever those three. I swear I’ve never seen a love triangle handled better than in the Infernal Devices.

Least Favorite: Peeta-Katniss-Gale! This simply wasn’t a love triangle. In the book Gale never stood a chance. There was NO Team Gale!

Sometimes romance just isn’t the way to go. Favorite friendship?

Again, Jem and Will from the Infernal Devices have the best bromance. What am I saying? Their relationship transcends bromance. There is no mallice or envy between them, just unconditional and eternal love, respect and trust. They are some of the best characters out there.

What’s your favorite scene with your bookish OTP?

There are so many and my memory is the WORST when it comes to details. But here’s a little snippet from City of Heavenly Fire.

“Magnus raised his head and looked up and over at Alec; it was a look that made Clary flush and glance away. There was so much love in it, mixed with exasperation and pride and despair. It was an unguarded look, and it felt wrong to see it.”

Then there was this other scene where they portaled themselves to go to the opera in Vienna and since that’s where I live, I sort of cherished that moment, however short it was.

Imagine your favorite book couple again. Who’s most excited about Valentine’s Day (either ironically or genuinely)?

Alec ironically and Magnus genuinely or maybe Alec would genuinely be excited because it is with Magnus. He’s difficult to read on this sometimes.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books That Would Be On My Syllabus If I Taught Buddy Stories 101

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the BookishThis week’s topic is Top Ten books you would put on your syllabus if you thought a literature class and I chose the friendship theme, so thanks for enrolling to Buddy Stories 101. Class is about to start!

(Whenever I do these lists, I am never sure if the ranking is actually from 1 to 10 or just numbered to give an overview. I have a hard time picking favourites, so see it as more of way to count rather than rate. The books I picked all have great friendships and some of them even evolve or are sprinkled with a bit of romance. I tried to avoid the romantic parts mostly, but then I thought that being best friends with your partner is pretty amazing, so who cares?)

1. The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare

Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1)NOTHING and I mean absolutely NOTHING is more powerful than a parabatai bond. It’s so much more than just friendship, it is even more than family or romantic love. It’s everything really. While I did enjoy Alec’s and Jace’s bond from TMI, I was even more fascinated with Will and Jem. Bring Tessa Gray into the mix and you’ve got ultimate friendship goals for me! So, the Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare it is!

2. Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson

Since You've Been Gone

This is one of my favourite books portraying female friendship. Emily and Sloane are just complete opposites of each other and that makes them work so well together. I’m so happy this book wasn’t just about romance! Also, it wasn’t just a fun read, but really funny as well!

3. How to Be Bad by Lockhart, Myracle & Mlynowski

23629114Three girls on a road trip? There is no way it’s not going to be great. They all have their own problems, but they can only get through it with each other. Sometimes they may explode and fight, but in the end, they are happy to have each other and I am happy to have read about their friendship.

4. Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan

23230I’ve talked about Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List a lot and while I do find the characters a bit annoying sometimes, they also have something special with each other. Their friendship changes a lot over the course of the book and is quite different in the end to what it was when you started reading. When one person develops romantic feelings, I think it is necessary to address this and deal with it instead of throwing the friendship away altogether.

5. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

893136This is a sad book. There is no way around that, but it’s a book that’s really dear to my heart. Liesel and Rudi already have a really special relationship, but I am even more a fan of Liesel and Max. Some wanted them to end up together, but that’s not the point at all. Their bond over books is amazing and I am so glad that they had each other.

6. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews

12700353Greg can call Earl his co-worker a gazillion more times, but it doesn’t change the fact that they are best friends and awesome together. ‘Nough said!

7. Love, Rosie/Where Rainbows End by Cecelia Ahern

20706297Over how many years does this book span? A lifetime pretty much and while Rosie’s and Alex’ relationship certainly has it’s ups and downs their friendship survived somehow. This may be more on the romantic side than I’d like to admit, but they were friends first and that ever since they were really little. It has to count for something!

8. The DUFF by Kody Keplinger

23153016Bianca has her best friends Casey and Jessica and they are a good group of friends, but not the one I want to focus on. Only with Wesley Bianca can be herself and they have a sort of friends with benefits thing going on, even though Bianca would probably never admit to being friends with Wes. Still, I think they never were as open and trusting with anyone than they were with each other. Being able to be yourself, that’s what I think is important in a friendship.

9. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

18741152I like all the friendships in this book (and the sequels as well). Anna and Etienne are great, Etienne and Josh, the whole gang pretty much is just amazeballs. I would have loved to go to school with this group!!!

10. Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson

2836Jess and Leslie are pretty much inseparable. They create their own fantasy world and really just have the best of times. But I think that Jess’ friendship with Leslie opened his world to so much more than just that. This book is really tragic in so many ways, but I don’t think Jess ever regretted befriending Leslie.

I hope you’ve learned something and take away some good stories from this class 😉 As always, click on the covers if you want to know more about the books! What are some of you favourite literary friendships?

The Infernal Devices Book Review

I know I am pretty late to the party when it comes to the Infernal Devices, but I have reasons for that … not any good ones, but still reasons … I’ve read the City of Bones trilogy (at least that’s what I believed it to be at the time) years ago – so many years, I don’t even remember. I read them in the German translation, so clearly the phase where I read everything in it’s original language hadn’t started yet. So, I was reluctant to buy anything associated with the series in English and I simply couldn’t get myself to continue reading it in German. But at some point I just couldn’t resist any longer. They look so pretty and they are about Shadowhunters – I mean that’s just cool!

Bildschirmfoto 2015-05-19 um 14.59.43

I’ve thought about this for a long time and I find it extremely difficult to do this without Spoilers, therefore there will be two parts to this review: one for everyone and one for the people who’ve read the book as well!

Spoiler-free section coming up!

The Infernal Devices is about the journey of Tessa Gray – about her encountering a world beyond what she thought was possible and of her realising what a special place she has in exactly that world. It’s a story about love, family, loyalty, honor and duty.

I like the universe Cassandra Clare has created. Opinions tend to differ on this one; some people just never really get into it and that’s okay too. But I wasn’t one of those people, I got sucked in and loved it. Not many authors manage to develop a story with so many side characters, you barely know who you want to keep track of most.

There was literally no one I didn’t like (except for the villains, who you still understood to some extant)! That doesn’t mean the characters are perfect, because as she states in the book “perfect is dull”, but they all have their quirks and habits that make them really lovable. Another plus: my all-time-favourite from City of Bones/Glass/Ashes Magnus Bane is in the books!

The pace of the story felt exactly right for the time period it played in and all the references to “A Tale of Two Cities” were great! Overall I enjoyed it very much and could’ve spent decades more with the characters.

Now Spoilers ahead!

All in all I liked all three books quite equally, although the ending was most superb. Clockwork Princess bothered me sometimes because the actual Mortmain-storyline was so minimal, but then again it was the best of the three books in terms of showing where all the characters will end up, who they truly love and what they are capable of becoming. But as always, I am just going to divide this part into the characters/pairings in order to get some structure into this whole thing:

  • Whoever said “You can’t have it all!” has clearly never read the Infernal Devices, because besides the immortality issue, Tessa Gray has about one of the best lives on the planet and she gets to live a whole and fulfilled life with both her true loves. I mean who gets to do that? Normal people have to choose!
  • I understand that everyone loves troubled Will Herondale and it’s not like I don’t like him, but I don’t seem to have been as affected by him as others. The only scene I absolutely adored and that shattered my heart was when he thought Jem was dead and his parabatai-rune faded. Other than that I think he’s fun and funny, has great taste in books and apparently looks quite handsome.
  • James Carstairs aka Jem is my second favourite character in the Shadowhunter world (next to the infamous Magnus Bane). I kind of preferred him to Will and hope people can live with that. When I thought he was dead I felt devastated and like a part of my heart was missing as well. Never would I have thought he would die, which essentially he didn’t, but I didn’t know that at the time. Very well played Ms Clare!
I’m so glad he got to be with his Tessa in the end as well and I’ve read about a little sequel called “After the Bridge” which tells us more about what happened after the Epilogue of Clockwork Princess. I have to get my hands on that somehow!!
  • Sophie, dear stubborn Sophie, I was so happy to see her become a Shadowhunter herself and find her love in Gideon Lightwood. He was smitten by her from the first second and that was just so lovely.
  • Henry and Charlotte have to be the most adorable people ever! I love how strong of a person Charlotte is and even though I felt sorry for Henry getting injured, it doesn’t seem like a big issue and that’s great. Also, Charlotte is the perfect example of female empowerment for the time period.
  • I still think it’s a little weird that Gabriel fell in love with Cecily because of his past with Will and her resemblance to him. Still, she made him a better man for sure.
  • I have never heard Bridget sing, but her songs sound fascinating. I can imagine though that they would get on my nerves after a while.
  • I feel sorry for Jessamine (although I’ve never particularly liked her) and hope she will find peace, even as a ghost.

Oh my stars, this has become a looong post. What do you say? Any thoughts on the Infernal Devices from your side?

Side note: I would like to see THAT becoming a movie or TV show!!! Until someone makes that happen, I will contend myself with the Shadowhunter show.
