Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #57

Where I ramble about all the TV shows and movies I’ve watched in the past week ….

I’m vibing with March so far and I hope you are too! Let’s not waste any time and jump right into what I’ve been watching this past week.

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

Walker: Independence (Season 1)

I’m full on in my cowboy era and I have no regrets. Originally I tried to watch Walker, but didn’t make it until the end of season 1, I was much more invested in Walker: Independence from the start. It’s obviously a CW show, so we have to deduct points for realism and unnecessary drama, but I still had a lot of fun. I know Justin Johnson Cortez was very hesitant to take on the role of Callian, not wanting it to be a harmful stereotype, but the cast and crew were very open to working with him and making sure he felt the role was authentic. There was a language coach on set, teaching the indigenous language and dialect to the cast. They did put care into it and I think it showed.

You can also feel about the romance however you like, but they’re kind of doing an enemies to lovers thing here and people are eating it up.

While a lot of other shows already got renewed, it’s not looking too great for Walker:Independence, which makes me sad. I think it deserves more time!

1923 (Season 1)

Alrighty, so … where do I start? If you’ve been following me on Twitter since the release of this show, you will have seen me absolutely spamming the timeline with Spencer and Alexandra content. I shipped them so hard and they definitely turned into the heart of the story for me. But … I kept quiet about a lot of other parts of the show and that’s because I believe – despite the absolutely brilliant cast that was assembled – this is Taylor Sheridan’s weakest entry into the Yellowstone universe.

The three main storylines (the ranch, Spalex in Africa, the residential school) all felt very disconnected for large parts of the season. Sheridan has once again shown that he has a penchant for gruesome on screen trauma and sometimes he’s just taking it a bit too far or adding it unnecessarily. I think, to this day, some people don’t understand or want to comprehend the atrocities that happened at residential schools and I’m glad we’re not glossing over that part of history, but it’s a lot. He also added torture porn with sex workers in the final two episodes for … no good reason? We had already established that the bad guy was a ruthless bad guy after all.

By the finale, it was very clear that this story was never meant for just one season. The pacing was off and it didn’t feel like a finale at all, just another episode coming to a close. I really hope that season 2 will end in a better fashion (with closure to some extent? Like, I wasn’t complaining about the ending of 1883 and that was devastating).

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

Daisy Jones and The Six (Season 1)

I’m not apologizing for making this show my whole personality for the foreseeable future! I mean, come on, it’s basically Fleetwood Mac fan fic.

I didn’t even love the book the way so many people do, it was very much a mid read for me, but dang, am I here for the show. Prime Video has figured out the perfect streaming release schedule (which is three episodes per week) and they’re applying it for Daisy Jones and the Six as well. The cast, which is portraying a fictional band, has released a whole formidable album that I’m listening to on repeat. The first two episodes are likely the weakest of the season, but bear with it. It’s going to be EPIC!

The Way Home (Season 1)

Genuinely so surprised by how much I’m in love with this show! Hallmark is known for its corny romances, but The Way Home is a lovely time travel show with family drama and a built in mystery. I can only recommend it, especially since it has just been renewed for another season!

Also, it has one of my new TV show crushes:

The Company You Keep (Season 1)

Having so much fun with this one? The secret agent/criminal dynamic is always divine, especially when they don’t know about it yet. Can’t wait for the calamity that will ensue when they find out.

The Last of Us (Season 1

Man, this show is just forever sad, eh?

Will Trent (Season 1)

I love every bit of new information we learn about Will. I don’t think Angie is really his soulmate, but I’m always intrigued to learn more about their past.

Fire Country (Season 1)

They did really with the “we’ve lost her” in the beginning and then putting THREE female characters in mortal danger. That’s what I call a misdirect.

Wolf Pack (Season 1)

OKAY! I still wonder if that blond dude could be Sarah Michelle Gellar’s son somehow? I don’t know why I’m stuck on that theory. But are the twins triplets in reality with their current assumption? I’m digging the build up, although the body count is super high right now and I never expected that.

How I Met Your Father (Season 2)

A lot of my friends are saying that they’re enjoying season 2 more, but I think I vibed with season 1 more? Weird times.

Abbott Elementary (Season 2)

Why is this show so funny? Not a dull episode in sight!

The Mandalorian (Season 3)

Daddy Din is back and while the first episode of the season didn’t blow me away, I’m looking forward to what’s ahead.

9-1-1: Lone Star (Season 4)

When are we finally done with the Owen show? This season has not been it so far with everyone but the Strands getting sidelined.

Station 19 (Season 6)

I’m glad Maya is getting help, but I was most heartbroken about the fact that Vic got put through trauma again. Although I’m really glad they addressed what loosing Ruiz and Montgomery would have meant for her.

Grey’s Anatomy (Season 19)

We’re echoing so many storylines from season 1 and I’m here for it. The soft reboot was a really good decision for this show, because it has finally become watchable again.

MOVIES

As always, don’t forget to add me on Letterboxd if you want to be up to date on all my movie experiences!

Knock at the Cabin

Knock at the Cabin was one of my most anticipated movies of 2023, but I found it kind of lackluster. Some elements worked really well and I like that we were never shown the most gruesome things. Your imagination will always come up with worse things than what’s actually on the screen (and I personally don’t like gore). But I can’t quite put my finger on why this still didn’t work for me. There was no twist to it? It was exactly what was set up at the beginning of the movie and I felt like it was missing something? However, I love seeing Dave Bautista explore his range and I’m so rooting for this man to get a leading role in a romcom.

Did you watch anything I’ve watched? Are there some movies/shows I should check out? Let’s talk about that!

Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #56

Where I ramble about all the TV shows and movies I’ve watched in the past week ….

I’m really pleased with most things I’ve watched, although not all. Let’s dive right in, I’ve just gotten back from work and I’m doing this to clear my thoughts.

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

Mayfair Witches (Season 1)

After the massive success that was Interview with the Vampire (a show that made it into my top TV shows of 2022 – check them out here) and AMC announcing that they’d expand on the Immortals Universe, I was really excited for Mayfair Wichtes. I had no previous knowledge from the books and wasn’t invested in any sort of faithful adaptation, I just knew I loved witches and stories about them, but dang … this season was a real drag.

While you get shown several timelines, nothing felt really connected and I thought it might have been more impacting if they hadn’t shown tiny bits of the past all the time, but rather made a dedicated flashback episode. Rowan, as a character, wasn’t someone I cared about much and the stakes rarely ever felt high or important. The final two episodes finally got me a bit more engaged, but let’s be honest, that was a tad too late. I’m just really disappointed that this show couldn’t live up to my (probably too high) expectations.

Outer Banks (Season 3)

I LOVED season 1 of Outer Banks. It was a mix between The Goonies and the OC and just had a blast watching it. With season 2, I adored the addition of Cleo, but felt a bit more lackluster about other characters. So, while I was still interested in this new season, I didn’t think I’d manage to still be super invested. I was wrong. This season totally won me back – probably due to my adjusted expectations of what we would be dealing with.

I have to say, the treasure hunt getting bigger and bigger is my least favorite part of the show. I personally just loved to see the Kook/Pogue divide and the characters interact. I’ve been waiting for Kiara and JJ to happen since episode 1 of the show and am so glad for every scene we’ve got between them in season 3. They really delivered. John B and Sarah on the other hand … what a mess that turned into! I’m glad the real life break up of the actors didn’t affect the chemistry of the characters at all, but I didn’t love their storylines. What I did love was Cleo and Pope! Aside from Pope’s parents being the only parents on the show with any rights, I just adored how Cleo fit into the family and lived for her moments and blossoming friendship with and feelings for Pope.

Without spoiling anything, there was a time jump in the final episode and I thought that would have been a really neat ending for the show, but it got renewed for another season even before this one got released. I’m SO confused by Netflix’ strategy, because they’ll renew something like this, which might get ruined in future seasons, but they won’t give others a chance (YES, I’m bitter cause there are still no renewal news on Lockwood & Co and many of my faves have been cancelled too soon in the past).

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

The Company You Keep (Season 1)

Shows like this, with a familiar storyline of a criminal and agent falling in love, need great casting to still feel fresh and exciting. The Company You Keep definitely delivered on that in the first episode and while I’m cautious in thinking it will get renewed, I’m definitely tuning in.

The Last of Us (Season 1

Each. week. is. just. so. good. My friends, who know I haven’t played the game, warned me that I’m not ready for the final two episodes.

Will Trent (Season 1)

Turns out that I don’t necessarily care as much about Angie being in Will’s life, but I did like the flashbacks. The actors were chosen well and had the mannerisms down.

Walker: Independence (Season 1)

I can’t believe Tom knew who Abby was all along?! Next week is going to be wild and I’m just in denial about Gus, okay?

1923 (Season 1)

Very little Alex and Spencer, but this upcoming episode is the finale for this season and I’m dreading it already. They better hurry up and film some more soon.

Wolf Pack (Season 1)

Theory time! Do we think that the werewolf that is killing everyone is maybe Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character’s son? I can’t read that lady at all, but I still think that the voice on the phone sounds like Ian Bohen.

How I Met Your Father (Season 2)

Again, another great episode showcasing individual friendship-duos. I just want scenes with all of them together though.

Abbott Elementary (Season 2)

AAAAAAH! IT HAPPENED! EVERYONE STAY CALM! MY SHIP IS SAILING!!!

9-1-1: Lone Star (Season 4)

This season feels so off to me. I mean … we’ve lost Marjan now or what is happening?

Station 19 (Season 6)

This episode was ALL OVER THE PLACE. We had Bishop’s storyline, which was really unethical doctor behavior, we had the elderly ladies and their scavenger hunt, which was fun but random, we had the police brutality arc continued, which was just nerve-wrecking and then we also had the potential Crisis One backlash, because Montgomery was running his mouth and potentially abusing information he learned on a call. So much heavy and weird “funny” bits.

Grey’s Anatomy (Season 19)

Strangely, not as emotional as I thought it would be. Turns out, I didn’t care as much about Mer as the others, but I do love that half the interns are living at the old Grey house now. They’re really leaning into those season 1 vibes.

MOVIES

As always, don’t forget to add me on Letterboxd if you want to be up to date on all my movie experiences!

Why Can’t My Life be a Rom-Com?

Look, I just saw two actors from Reginald the Vampire being in this and thought I’d check it out. It did not impress.

While it tried to be modern, it felt like it belonged in the long line of movies that released a while ago and didn’t seem timely then either. Some characters were straight up annoying and contradictory. It wasn’t the worst, but also not the best. A certain spark was missing for a lot of it though, even though I liked the main couple in the end.

Did you watch anything I’ve watched? Are there some movies/shows I should check out? Let’s talk about that!

Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #55

Where I ramble about all the TV shows and movies I’ve watched in the past week ….

Another week is coming to a close and I’m tired af, but have no idea what from. Some days will just be like that, so I took a nap in the middle of the day and delayed the post. Let’s talk about shows and movies though!

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

I didn’t finish any shows this week, but watched a bunch of movies, so stay tuned for those!

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

Mayfair Witches (Season 1)

I’ve finished episode 7 and we’re finally getting somewhere, but dang that’s far too late in a season to make me change my mind about the show.

Will Trent (Season 1)

Betty is the moment. Need I say more? Well, yeah. It was fun to learn more about Faith’s home life and I’m just glad we have Will Trent back after the break last week.

Walker: Independence (Season 1)

I’m so confused about what to believe. Obviously, I kinda sorta somewhat know that Tom is a terrible person, but I still thought he was one of the best characters of the season aside from Calian.

1923 (Season 1)

My darlings are alright and getting married and … aaaah! I just know this season is going to end with Spencer arriving at the ranch and the wait for the new season will be torture.

Wolf Pack (Season 1)

The CGI of the animals remains absolutely abysmal, but I keep wanting to learn more about the pack dynamics. I don’t buy Luna pining after Austin though. I’m so sorry.

How I Met Your Father (Season 2)

Sid remains a top tier character and I like how we’re fleshing out the friendship dynamics, although I wish they would include the whole crew and not just duos.

Abbott Elementary (Season 2)

Never seen Barbara this flustered before, but the real twist were Jacob’s cookies.

9-1-1: Lone Star (Season 4)

Everything about the TK/Carlos storyline was peak content, the Owen stuff stays very mid.

MOVIES

As always, don’t forget to add me on Letterboxd if you want to be up to date on all my movie experiences!

At Midnight

I continued my “Valentine’s Day” binge of new RomComs and this one was probably my favorite of the bunch I watched. It has Notting Hill and America’s Sweetheart vibes and is utterly corny. I know that parts of it will be too ridiculous for some people, but I like movies that are unabashedly romantic, not scared of not taking themselves too seriously and have that retro flair. Diego Boneta and Monica Barbaro had great chemistry and I had a really great time watching the movie! Also, almost all of it was shot on location in Mexico, which is cool!

Somebody I Used to Know

What a waste to never having used the song during the entire movie, but what can you do? Directed by Dave Franco and co-written by him and Alison Brie, I thought that the movie was marketed in the wrong way. It’s not a RomCom, but it’s a very good film regardless. Aside from a Community reunion between Alison Brie and Danny Pudi, I enjoyed the themes of regret, change and trusting yourself. I will always watch anything Alison Brie stars in regardless, but I’d love to see more of this husband-wife-duo, because they seem to work really well together.

Sharper

I so wish I hadn’t watched the trailer and while I will post it below, I don’t recommend you actually watch it. The cast was really enticing and it was an okay movie, but none of the twists hit me, because I saw them all from a mile away (possibly because of having watched the trailer). I enjoyed how every “chapter” more or less ended on some kind of betrayal, that was thematically smart, but the rest was unforatuntely a tad underwhelming for me.

Did you watch anything I’ve watched? Are there some movies/shows I should check out? Let’s talk about that!

Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #54

Where I ramble about all the TV shows and movies I’ve watched in the past week ….

Let me tell you, I surprised myself with the amount of shows I watched/finished this past week. Let’s talk about that!

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

National Treasure: Edge of History (Season 1)

I know a lot of people were skeptical, because the show didn’t feature Nic Cage and focused on a much younger age bracket, but you know what? For what it was, it was a lot of fun. Everyone is insanely smart, so they figure out clues and puzzles super fast, but it was also just great to have a really healthy and nice friendship group dynamic to watch. There’s loads of ships if you’re interested in that and the final episodes did hold some twists I didn’t necessarily expect.

I haven’t yet heard any news on a potential renewal for the show, but it works as a one-off limited series just as much as a continued show. They definitely set up a storyline should they get another season order, but there was no dreadful cliffhanger.

The Legend of Vox Machina (Season 2)

I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH! I think Prime also really cracked the perfect formula of how to release episode on a streaming platform. They posted three episodes per week, which was (to me) the ideal mix of being able to binge and immerse myself in the story while also having the excitement of a weekly release and getting to talk to people about specific episodes.

As far as the animation goes, I feel like they really stepped it up in season 2, because there were some gorgeous shots that I still think about a lot. Especially all things concerning the Raven Queen was SO WELL DONE. I just adored seeing the campaign come to life on the screen and this show hyping up adult animation content, because it can be so dope!

I’m very glad to inform you that season 3 has already been greenlit.

YOU (Season 4, Part 1)

Somehow, YOU manages to reinvent itself a little bit every season. I have to admit that I don’t really get why we split the season in two other than Netflix trying to generate buzz for their property over a longer amount of time, but as a viewer, not really feeling it.

This season starts out as a kind of murder mystery, where I surprised myself by guessing the murderer before I had even met the character – a new record for me! I feel very torn in the way they try to give Joe more and more redeemable qualities, because he is an absolute psycho and people are bound to forget that, because they find him hot …

Still, long story short, I had fun and binged it in one evening. Looking forward to part 2 now and will judge the season as a whole afterwards.

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

The Last of Us (Season 1)

We got TWO episodes this week and I’m so glad about that. Henry and Sam’s story deserved to be told and was so freaking heartbreaking. I thought it was kind of fitting that those were the two episodes that aired closer to each other.

Mayfair Witches (Season 1)

I’ve watched episode 6, because I think for some it wasn’t obvious that I’ve continued to be one episode ahead of the TV release. I’m just not a fan I suppose. I would have structured the show so differently.

Fire Country (Season 1)

If I get tired of Bode and Gabriella now … that does not bode well (see what I did there?) for upcoming seasons.

Wolf Pack (Season 1)

Loving this show! I don’t yet know what it means to be in a pack in this particular universe, but I can’t wait to find out.

How I Met Your Father (Season 2)

Sooo … Sophie admitted she kissed all of her friends at some point on the show. That means my Sid endgame is still an option.

Abbott Elementary (Season 2)

The Valentine’s episode was fun! They know how to do themed stuff on Abbott.

9-1-1: Lone Star (Season 4)

Ugh, again with the FBI storyline that I do not care about … the Iris thing on the other hand? Carlos cannot blame TK for it. I just won’t allow my babies to fight over something that was done by an unhinged person.

MOVIES

As always, don’t forget to add me on Letterboxd if you want to be up to date on all my movie experiences!

Your Place or Mine

I announced that we would get a resurgence of RomComs this year and Your Place or Mine was one of the first ones on my list. Not sure if all of you have seen the red carpet pictures of Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher, but those two did not look comfortable next to each other at all. It was super awkward to watch, but it sort of makes sense now that I’ve watched the movie and the leads don’t share the screen for 90% of the time.

In theory, this should have been a home run. We have friends to lovers, immature adult bonding with a kid, a LOT of bookish references and talk about plants, Zoe Chao was featured. Those are legit all things I enjoy, but I felt a bit lackluster about the outcome of it all. It was nice, but not the best RomCom I’ve seen of late. I think we are allowed to want the genre to thrive, but for it to also do … more?

Did you watch anything I’ve watched? Are there some movies/shows I should check out? Let’s talk about that!

Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #53

Where I ramble about all the TV shows and movies I’ve watched in the past week ….

It’s been a week, but it seems that February will pass by much quicker than January did. Here’s what I watched this past week!

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

Lockwood & Co (Season 1)

I’m going to start off by being real honest with you – if Netflix doesn’t renew this show, I will be SO upset! Their promotion team is setting them up to fail, but they deserve so much better.

I haven’t read the books and cannot speak to any possible changes, but what I can talk about is the phenomenal chemistry between the characters. While the world is definitely interesting and had me intrigued from the get-go, it was the various character interactions, the longing looks, the tension that really carried the show. Lockwood & Co might seem like it would skewer fairly young, but I think this works for adults just fine. There’s so much you can still do in this setting and I 100% want to explore the relationships some more. I might even start reading the books, because they certainly do have my attention right now.

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

The Last of Us (Season 1)

Episode 3 – Long Long Time – was EVERYTHING! Every week, this show just keeps getting better and better. I never expected to be so freaking invested (and concerned about the real life fungi news we’re getting).

Mayfair Witches (Season 1)

Ugh, what can I say. I wanted to love this show so bad, but I just don’t? There’s an element missing, something that could truly grip me.

Will Trent (Season 1)

The way this man looks at and cares for Betty is everything. It’s a healthier relationship than the one he has with Angie, but that’s gonna take some more unpacking.

National Treasure (Season 1)

WHAT A TWIST!!! I mean, did you see that coming? I, first of all, thought that was an absolute minion character, but not the boss man. And secondly, do we think the death is permanent or will there be some saving involved? I’m kind of in denial at the moment, just because I think that the agent and morgue guy are the cutest.

Fire Country (Season 1)

If the drama starts getting repetitive in season 1 already, we might be in trouble.

Wolf Pack (Season 1)

Still enjoying it, but I keep wondering if that is Ian Bohen’s voice when it comes to the anonymous caller, which in turn makes me think of Teen Wolf.

How I Met Your Father (Season 2)

Meghan Trainor was a random cameo, but my boy Sid did amazing this episode. He’s one of my top characters on the show.

The Legend of Vox Machina (Season 2)

THEY GAVE ME SOME OF MY FAVORITE PERCY/VEX MOMENTS ON SCREEN! I still always want more, because I’m a greedy, greedy person when it comes to my ships. But truly, they are doing such an amazing job adapting the campaign and I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone, but that one cameo from an important C2 character – let me tell you, I screamed.

9-1-1: Lone Star (Season 4)

As expected, I care very little for the FBI plot. Also, what kind of amateur undertaking is this. They aren’t protecting Owen at all.

MOVIES

As always, don’t forget to add me on Letterboxd if you want to be up to date on all my movie experiences!

Teen Wolf

I watched the Teen Wolf movie so you wouldn’t have to. Saying it’s a mess is the understatement of the century, because this movie was just disrespectful. If you ever had love for this story and/or the characters in it, spare yourself! I’m still fuming and it’s been almost a week since I’ve watched it.

Granted, I should have known and I kind of did know that it was going to be terrible. So many of the cast members didn’t return (for good reason! They did Arden Cho so dirty!!) and the more I think about it, the better for them! Now they won’t be associated with whatever … *that* was. I mean, we didn’t have Stiles, Kira, Isaac, the twins or so many others. Out of my personal top 5 Teen Wolf characters, there were only two present in the movie and one of them was eventually killed off. The other got a different love interest, which was the only bright spot in the whole thing.

This entire movie catered to what Scott needed and railroaded all other characters in order to give him what he desired in life. Honestly, it felt gross. I’m just ranting now, so I better stop. My disappointment is boundless.

If any of you want to talk spoilers about the movie, feel free to do so in the comments. I will gladly dive into it more deeply there.

Did you watch anything I’ve watched? Are there some movies/shows I should check out? Let’s talk about that!

Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #52

Where I ramble about all the TV shows and movies I’ve watched in the past week ….

I’m spending so much of my free time trying to either read or watch things, I should probably go out more instead and get some fresh air. But at least, this way, I have some stuff to talk to you about with.

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

Extraordinary (Season 1)

I remember seeing a trailer for this show and then it popped up in my feed on release day and I started watching it and binged it all the way through until 2AM. That should tell you all you need to know, right? Maybe it’s the British humor, maybe it’s the interesting world-building with people having really random powers or just the quirky characters in general, but I had the best of times. These people were messy and sometimes selfish and that made them feel relatable. The dynamics were super interesting, I just wanted to take care of the cat … MORE PLEASE!

Gossip Girl (Season 2)

So, I’ve already announced this before, but Gossip Girl was cancelled – which means this wasn’t just a season finale but also a series finale. While I do believe that the show found its stride a bit more in season 2, they still weren’t utilizing Luna and Monet to their full potential. There were hints of interesting storylines there, especially since I could tell what they were trying to set up, had they been renewed for a season 3, but it was a decent enough ending for the time they were given. I think most people will be sad about the incomplete polyamory storyline, because the showrunners definitely meant to reunite them and not make the messaging be like “polyamory never works out”.

I liked that they sort of roasted themselves in the final act about the Gossip Girl reveal. People truly did not care about those teachers.

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

The Last of Us (Season 1)

The cold opens are SO GOOD each time. They make everything a 100 times more creepy and realistic and I just know that people hated what the Stalker did at the end of the episode. Poor Tess, that was really gross.

Mayfair Witches (Season 1)

I’ve seen episode 4 already and things are happening. I can’t quite put my finger on why I still feel like the show is missing something.

Will Trent (Season 1)

Will Trent, as a show, is a lot darker than promos might have led you to believe, but I’m relishing that we get to know these characters better each week.

National Treasure (Season 1)

They were so extra in this episode. I mean the slow motion run through the courtyard. Really?

Walker: Independence (Season 1)

So … it happened and I’m not mad at it. We all know I have a soft spot for Tom, which is terrible, because he literally has a torture shed, but oh well, I saw this coming and, again, I’m not mad.

Wolf Pack (Season 1)

Funny how this show released more or less at the same time as the Teen Wolf movie, isn’t it? I will never watch that TW movie, just because they are going to retcon so much, they didn’t bother bringing certain actors back or to pay them accordingly. I will, however, enjoy having Sarah Michelle Gellar with supernatural beings on my screen again. I liked the intro to this world!

How I Met Your Father (Season 2)

I know many of you weren’t convinced with season 1, but I liked it and I really enjoyed the start to the new season was well.

The Legend of Vox Machina (Season 2)

Thank the gods that this show releases episodes in batches of three. As much as I adore all of it and the way we get to see all the really cool action unfold, I sometimes miss the quieter and slower moments between characters. It’s not just that I have to live off of crumbs in regards to Vex and Percy at the moment, but I just want more backstories, more bonding, more scenes at the fireplace. I know they’re there, they were in the campaign after all. But this is truly complaining on a high level, because the show is FANTASTIC!

9-1-1: Lone Star (Season 4)

You know me and my firehouse shows are a done deal, so I was obviously going to tune in, but I don’t want that FBI storyline. Is this some weird backdoor pilot for a new show? So sorry, but I don’t want even more Owen. Last season already was about him so much.

MOVIES

As always, don’t forget to add me on Letterboxd if you want to be up to date on all my movie experiences!

Of Hearts and Castles

Of Hearts and Castles isn’t a full length movie, but a short film starring Philemon Chambers (Walker: Independence) and Luis Carazo (ExU: Calamity). With that cast, I just couldn’t resist! I mean, those boys are fantastic and I didn’t expect a collab, but I’m here for it. Hugging has truly never felt more intimate on screen and I love that.

If you want to check out the full short film, you can do so in the video below:

Now I’m back to binging Lockwood & Co! Did you watch anything I’ve watched? Are there some movies/shows I should check out? Let’s talk about that!

Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #51

Where I ramble about all the TV shows and movies I’ve watched in the past week ….

Do you ever have these weeks, where you wonder what you did all week long? Because time has evidently passed, but I couldn’t tell you what I did aside from working. Anyway, here’s a few things I watched.

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

That ’90s Show (Season 1)

I love That ’70s Show when I was younger, even if a lot of the jokes went over my head, but if you are a fan as well, That ’90s Show is a fairly decent reboot. Not going to lie, there are a couple really cringey things and the teen aspect won’t work for everyone anymore, but that’s why it’s so great that Kitty and Red are still among the main cast. We get cameos from almost everyone from the OG show and still have the original sets. It’s super nostalgic and works in that sometimes over the top sitcom kind of way. I’d genuinely like to watch more seasons and not just because I want to see where Nate and Leia could potentially go.

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

The Last of Us (Season 1)

FANTASTIC! Legit just SO GOOD! I didn’t expect it to be so accurate to the game in certain scenes, but wow. This is what I call a good game adaptation.

Mayfair Witches (Season 1)

So, I have watched episode 3 already, which means there’s early access to episodes online now. I don’t have all that much to say though, I feel like not enough is happening for some reason.

Will Trent (Season 1)

I’m genuinely enjoying this show so much, I really didn’t expect that. If you haven’t started it yet, PLEASE WATCH!

National Treasure (Season 1)

Yes, a lot of stuff just works out super conveniently for our crew, but I like the show. It’s really just a tween version of the movies.

Walker: Independence (Season 1)

Y’all, I need my weekly fill of cowboys on my screen, so I’m super glad the show is back. And I’m also glad I can now like Tom’s character with a bit less of a guilty conscience it seems.

Gossip Girl (Season 2)

The show got cancelled, so that tells you how the season is going …

Abbott Elementary (Season 2)

Just about everyone knows that Gregory likes Janine now and I’m living for it.

The Legend of Vox Machina (Season 2)

MY BABIES ARE BACK! They released the first three episodes of the season and they were all fantastic. The Sunken Tomb destroyed me despite me fully well knowing how this is going to end, which is another sign of excellence.

MOVIES

As always, don’t forget to add me on Letterboxd if you want to be up to date on all my movie experiences!

Apparently, I didn’t watch any movies this past week.

I may have forgotten something again, my brain feels foggy! Did you watch anything I’ve watched? Are there some movies/shows I should check out? Let’s talk about that!

Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #50

Where I ramble about all the TV shows and movies I’ve watched in the past week ….

We skipped a week, because I had to do all my wrap-ups and rankings (check out a summary HERE), so you’d think there was loads to talk about, but my brain is mostly blanking right now. I also restarted Yellowstone, so I’m unwell, thank you very much.

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

Ginny & Georgia (Season 2)

Ginny & Georgia caught a lot of flack when it first premiered. From people ridiculing the teen drama to the Swifties and BTS armies coming for the show for disrespecting their faves. All in all, it had a fair share of cringey moments, but I still enjoyed watching said first season and I was looking forward to more. Boy, did they deliver! SEASON 2 IS SO MUCH BETTER!

I’m not even joking a little bit. There’s still annoying characters and subplots I’m not fully invested in, but they seemed to really have listened to the audience and stepped up their game tenfold. The performances were award-worthy and I can say that, because they literally made me cry in the first episode of the season. There was a heavy focus on mental health and they handled that topic well in my opinion. I can’t speak to all experiences and their representation on the show, but I found some aspects I’m definitely familiar with. I genuinely hope that they can get another season even without a mountain of controversy getting people to hate-watch. They’d deserve it, but I don’t trust Netflix one bit.

Mythic Quest (Season 3)

I’m sad to say that this was my least favorite season of the show so far. I can’t put my finger on the “why?” of it all exactly, but they switched up the character dynamics and paired people differently, which I guess I didn’t fully vibe with? This is the worst and most vague review ever, but it’s really just a gut feeling. I very much liked the last couple of episodes though, because Mythic Quest does the 1.) the standalone episodes and 2.) the episodes with a serious undertone SO WELL. They’re even getting a spin-off show focusing on those standalone stories. I can’t wait for that!

Anyway, I’m glad there’s more, but this was a lengthy filler in a way. I’m also just maybe possibly only here for Poppy and Ian to have a complicated but wonderful relationship and whatever it is that Danny Pudi is doing.

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

Mayfair Witches (Season 1)

I’m glad I haven’t read the books, because I enjoyed myself very much in that first episode. I only saw that changes were made, characters combined and readers were not happy. I’m hopeful that this show will deliver with full force as the season progresses. I mean, Mayfair Witches is a tale that takes some time to get set up properly.

Will Trent (Season 1)

Another literary adaptation and the promos were so lying! This is not a show with a comedic undertone at all and it’s all the more brilliant for it. I’m very much invested. But also, Betty is the real scene-stealer.

National Treasure (Season 1)

I’m having a great time with the show. Every time that I get frustrated with a character, they prove me wrong and I love that.

1923 (Season 1)

I’m in shambles. The fact that they finally revealed the “twist” with the time difference – brilliant – but to leave us on that note – cruel!

Gossip Girl (Season 2)

At this point, I don’t even know if I still have characters I root for? Aki? Maybe??

Abbott Elementary (Season 2)

Please, this is the only sitcom I love to watch and it’s so good! The outro from last week with the podcast still has me in stitches.

Call Me Kat (Season 3)

The tribute episode for Leslie Jordan was heartbreaking, I don’t know how the cast went through that.

The People We Hate at the Wedding

There’s a lot of book adaptations in today’s post and I’m exposing myself in that I have read none of them. I was excited to watch The People We Hate at the Wedding, because usually romantic/family comedies with Kristen Bell have worked well for me in the past (think You Again or When in Rome), but I was a bit underwhelmed by this one. It’s not a terrible movie, but sometimes you get the intricacies of certain relationships across the screen and sometimes you don’t. I don’t know if it was just the fact that too many characters were involved or if it was similar in the source material, but my gut tells me that it was better explored in a longer format.

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse

I’ve wanted the book for this one for a while, but haven’t gotten around to it. Since I didn’t know when I’d be able to read it (or just get the book in general), I just figured I’d watch the “movie” instead. It was so precious and cute, but it didn’t really have a full fledged-story narrative. It was more like little scenes of wisdom and vulnerable moments smushed together in a certain sequence. If you want to get in your feels, this seems like the right thing, but it’s not going to blow you away with it’s story.

I may have forgotten something, but, oh well! Did you watch anything I’ve watched? Are there some movies/shows I should check out? Let’s talk about that!

Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #49

Where I ramble about all the TV shows and movies I’ve watched in the past week ….

With work and me trying to reach my reading goal before the end of the year, I definitely haven’t watched as much as last week. Regardless, lets talk about it!

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

1883 (limited series)

Yes, I did spend another week watching more Yellowstone related content and I HAVE NO REGRETS. Elsa Dutton is a freaking icon, because she was just a teen if we’re being honest and some of her decisions were real immature, but she was still one of the best this family has ever had. I knew what was going to happen because of the literal first episode and I was still rooting for some kind of story change the entire series.

Anyway, Dutton women are cursed, the family should give back the land to the indigenous people, because James literally said they could have it back after 7 generations and Tate Dutton is the 7th generation. Alrighty, Taylor Sheridan may have a real freaky side in the way he makes his characters suffer and tries to show the ugly truth of history, but dang … he got me hooked with his shows. The Yellowstone cinematic universe is my everything.

The Witcher: Blood Origin (limited series)

I don’t have that much to say. I thought it was a fun show and I sometimes just wished I could spend more time with the characters. I genuinely just wanted more of all of them, more of what tied them together, more of their backstory, more of their feelings for each other. I felt those bonds, despite the short run time, but I really would have loved to get a chance to explore that even more on the screen itself.

No clue if this is based on the actual backstory in the books, but I thought it was interesting. I’m really interested in Season 3 of the regular Witcher show now.

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

National Treasure (Season 1)

I swear to you, if Jake Austin Walker is playing a traitorous douche-canoe, we’re going to have a problem!

1923 (Season 1)

Spencer Dutton and Alexandra are going to be THE ship for me on the show. But I already know this isn’t going to end well.

Gossip Girl (Season 2)

Everyone is excited that Georgina Sparks is back, but I’ve never liked her, so this is actual not good for me at all.

Mythic Quest (Season 3)

I think there’s one more episode? Unfortunately, not my favorite season so far.

A Quiet Place

This was actually a rewatch, because I still haven’t watched the second part, which just dropped in my Netflix region. So, I wanted to refresh my memory on the plot of the first one and I still think the movie was brilliant. Silence can be such an efficient tool in filmmaking and they utilized it and sound in return to perfection. Can’t wait to finally watch the sequel soon!

Did you watch anything I’ve watched? Are there some movies/shows I should check out? Let’s talk about that!

Kat’s Weekly TV & Movie Recap #48

Where I ramble about all the TV shows and movies I’ve watched in the past week ….

I’m sorry for my absence this week. I’ve been sick and well … still am (not sure if it’s the flu or just a very persistent cold, I just know it’s not the rona …) and was quite preoccupied with pre-holiday stuff. I couldn’t let it slide to not post a weekly wrap-up of what I’ve been watching though. So, let’s check out some movies and shows and let me wish you a happy festive season!

FINISHED TV SHOWS/SEASONS

Yellowstone (Season 3-the latest ep. of Season 5)

I’m not actually going to rattle on too long about the show. I always have to be in the right mood for Yellowstone, but when I am, oh boy … I just binge the heck out of it. There will be a 5-minute-sequence of these people just cowboying and doing work on the ranch and I’ll happily watch them? I don’t know what has happened to me, but I probably just miss horseback-riding again.

Anyway, the season 3 finale was wild and the show has seriously mellowed out since then. With season 5 being 16 episodes long, I expect a serious showdown between Beth and Jamie by the end of it. The thing is though … I couldn’t possibly care less about Jamie if I tried. I don’t want him to succeed, I just want him to move to another state and follow his ambitions there, so I don’t have to deal with it anymore. I’d rather watch a spin-off show set on the 6666 ranch.

Emily in Paris (Season 3)

I’ll admit it without shame that I was a person who used to hate-watch Emily in Paris. The characters always used to be insufferable and the people from France were portrayed as their worst stereotypes. I was always like “this is slander and ridiculous!”, but then this season really surprised me. Emily stayed out of business that wasn’t her own, most people made fairly decent decisions and the French people actually spoke in French with each other. Did … did the showrunners listen to peoples complaints?

Genuinely, this was the least annoying season so far and I’m actually excited for what comes next! I still don’t like everyone or support all decisions, but Season 3 worked. And well at that.

Also, Luc is the best character. It’s not up for debate.

WEEKLY TV SHOWS

National Treasure (Season 1)

I continue to enjoy this show, despite it not being like the movies. You just have to adjust your expectations, I think. I’m also praying to the TV gods that I will get to love Jake Austin Walker’s character throughout the entire run of the show. He’s usually prone to be cast as a douche.

1923 (Season 1)

This is another Yellowstone prequel show. I hadn’t seen the previous one, but Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford are strong arguments.

Gossip Girl (Season 2)

I’m sad they went there with Audrey. It feels like it’s the beginning of the end of the triad.
Also, why make Obie’s family German, when none of these actors speak the language? It’s painful to listen to, considering that they’re supposedly fluent/it’s their mother tongue.

Mythic Quest (Season 3)

Love me sitcoms that can do heavy moments well. It’s what makes Mythic Quest so good.

MOVIES

As always, don’t forget to add me on Letterboxd if you want to be up to date on all my movie experiences!

Catherine Called Birdy

100% not a fan of Lena Dunham. In fact, she was the reason I pondered whether I should watch this movie at all, but then I saw the trailer again and couldn’t resist. I’m so glad I watched Catherine Called Birdy. It’s a beautifully funny yet touching coming-of-age tale and acted so well on all parts. I have a soft spot for Joe Alwyn (his voice is so freaking soothing), so his involvement was a major plus for me, but Bella Ramsey was the clear standout. I haven’t read the book, but I kind of want to now and can definitely see why people would love this story so much.

Boxing Day

I’ve made it my mission to watch new-to-me Christmas movies this season that weren’t ridiculously Hallmark-y and Boxing Day delivered for that prompt. It still had flaws, because the main guy was not worth all that trouble and I will side with Lisa forever, but I had a good time. That’s what we want from a movie, right?

The Thing About Harry

Disregarding the stupid bi/pan stereotypes, this was such a cute movie. The chemistry worked and I was really rooting for them. Due to the cast being who they are, I now also see the latest season of Grey’s Anatomy in a whole new light. I’m having ideas, if you know what I mean?

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Knives Out is one of those movies that I’ve watched more times than I can actually count. Because of the high profile cast and the subversion of expectations, it was one of my few joys of 2020 and has been fun to rewatch ever since. Now, I knew I shouldn’t go into Glass Onion with expectations that were too high, because how could you possibly recreate that? Rian Johnson did it again though. While Knives Out has a special place in my heart, I had the best of times watching (and rewatching) Glass Onion. I just love the structure of these films so much and that they get big names actors for even the smallest cameos. I hope we get hundreds more of these movies and Benoit Blanc helping the right kind of people.

Klaus

Klaus is my #1 Christmas movie and I insist on watching it every single year. There’s never a dry eye in the house when I watch it, no matter how often I’ve already seen it. The animation is perfection, the characters and their development amazing and it just has SO. MUCH. HEART! It’s my biggest recommendation of the season.

Again, I’m wishing you happy holidays! Did you watch anything I’ve watched? Are there some movies/shows I should check out? Let’s talk about that!
