March 2021 Wrap-Up

So, March was another month? I don’t even really know what to say about it, but let’s just start with what I always start with – the books! I actually read quite a lot considering what my usual monthly average was the past years and I also think I picked some great books! Let’s see what we’ve got:

  • Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo (3 stars)
I was on a roll when it came to the Grisha books and mostly read them in one day. Siege and Storm was not my favourite though. While I was never against Mal in the first book, the bad communication in this one drove me nuts. Still, the slow corruption of Alina Starkov had its draws and I generally enjoyed myself.
  • Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo (4 stars)
What a satisfying ending! There really wasn’t many ways this could have gone and I personally liked it a lot. The book really had no right making me as emotional as it did in those final pages.
  • Any Place But Here by Sarah Van Name (4 stars)
  • King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo (3.5 stars)
  • The Summer of Broken Rules by K.L. Walther (4 stars)

Siege and Storm (Shadow and Bone, #2) Ruin and Rising (Shadow and Bone, #3) Any Place But Here King of Scars (King of Scars, #1) The Summer of Broken Rules

As per usual, click on the covers to get re-directed to Goodreads, where you are always welcome to add me as a reading buddy! My own reviews (where there is one) you’re able to find by clicking on the titles in the list above if there are posts for them.

I’ve been contemplating how to best tackle my life this past month. After some personal struggles as well as a lengthy recovery from dental surgery (still healing, but all good), I knew I couldn’t put off the Canada topic any longer – I had to act! Most of you know that there is little I want more than to go back to my beloved Vancouver. The only issue is – this pandemic! It has messed up literally all my plans, I have zero desire to travel anywhere in this climate, vaccine roll outs are slow where I live and my once so very open work permit now hinges on me finding a job offer before I actually get to enter the country anyway. I’ve been writing dozens of cold applications as well as trying to apply for jobs I saw online, even if they aren’t all in the industry I used to work for. It’s been a very frustrating process. Please, for those of you who care, keep your fingers crossed for me, because at this point, my dream coming true really is just a matter of ridiculous luck …

Should I not be able to secure a job offer before the end of June (and not get another extension for the visa), this is it. I can never apply for that work permit again (as you can only do so once and getting approved is seen as taking part, even if you never enter the country), which means I literally have to rethink my entire life plan, where I want to live and what I want to do. To say I’m panicking inwardly is the understatement of the century, because I really don’t want to give up on this, but I might have to come to terms with the fact that I have to (especially since I can’t keep doing nothing in Vienna … I need to work! I LOVE work!). Sorry for this very rambly and personal outburst …

As much as I’ve tried my best at *all of that*, I still haven’t gotten back any kind of motivation to keep doing anything creatively. I have posted a couple things on my art instagram, but I wasn’t really happy with any of it. I keep not enjoying the end result and it’s really demotivating. I hope I will get some inspiration/motivation back soon, because I’m tired of being tired.

MY FAVOURITE THINGS

Many of you have probably seen me freak out on Twitter about Shadow and Bone on the regular and I apologize in advance about the person I will become on April 23. However, to not just rehash my gushing from last month, I want to talk about my massive dilemma, because speaking of April 23 … that day is also the day of the final episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. (Links for the reviews to the first two episodes below!!!) I always, always enjoy Marvel content, but I didn’t expect to fall that hard for this particular show. Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan just have an incredible dynamic and the character work they’re doing is beautiful! I may also have gone on a slight binge of their interviews together …

Another thing I would like to highlight is Sofii @A Book. A Thought. and the incredible work she has done to compile a really extensive list of book bloggers. Especially with the blow bloggers received after finding out how willing publishing is to throw money at tiktokers (no shade to tiktokers!!! Go get that coin!), but still pay regular bloggers nothing but dust, I love to go on lists like that and support other bloggers with likes and comments whenever I can. It’s super handy. May 2019 Wrap-Up

I don’t know what to tell you, folks, but not much has changed since we had the last monthly wrap-up. I still haven’t read a whole book (although I dnf-ed the bad one and started a new one) and my blogging game is anything but at its best. In a way this annoys me like crazy, because I’ve been in the game for so long and I WANT to give you better content, but alas, this is all I am capable of providing at the moment. I am so grateful for all the people who keep reassuring me that they are happy to check out my weekly trailer posts or the ramblings about what I’ve been currently watching, but I still hope to get a more varied content that’s not just TV back soon.

As you probably noticed, or don’t – I am not your boss, I also haven’t started working on my YouTube reaction channel just yet. Aside from the fact that I really don’t know if I have all the technical necessities to do this thing, I just honestly didn’t have the time. I honestly don’t even know how I got through this month, thinking back at all the stuff that happened … anyways, I still have a question for you.

THINGS I LIKED THIS MONTH

As I said, I mostly did some watching rather than reading, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I will list a series and a movie for this section of the post. I just wish that Netflix sponsored me, because I am hyping their content all the time for zero money. That’s how you know my love for their content is real! I really do believe that platform was basically made for people like me. Anyway, my faves though!

So, first of all, I fell in love with The Society. I am not going to run around and act like this is best show that was ever made, but it’s one that has stayed with me for weeks and that means something. Basically it’s just a bunch of teens who are very bad at survival tactics trying to form a government after they find out they are all by their lonesome selves. I adored how there was just constant mystery as to what happened (I STILL have no freaking clue) and even though it had a quite big cast, you get to know the characters pretty equally. I obviously adore Grizz like everyone else. He is the most wholesome bean and needs to be protected when Season 2 rolls around, which it will. Netflix did so much promo and additional online content for the show, I’d be shocked if they didn’t have more plans for it.

And the other thing I liked this month was Always Be My Maybe. I just am so blissfully happy when Netflix chooses to do right by people and makes good content with amazing creators. I just talked about it yesterday, so I don’t want to get into too much detail again, but that movie is so sweet and funny – just watch it! And if you need some more reasons to enjoy it, here’s a clip of Ali Wong just SWOONING over her co-stars.

TRAILER POSTS

So, this was my month! Here’s to hoping that June will be more productive on a personal level.

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Oct 1-7)

As of late, I always plan to do these posts earlier and then get completely sidetracked by something else on YouTube. I don’t even know why, but I got completely caught up into Shane’s series “The Mind of Jake Paul“, I just need the next part to release right away. That’s not why you are here though, so here’s the trailers I found:

Movies

Been So Long

I am not the person who is usually head over heels for musicals, but I NEED BEEN SO LONG IN MY LIFE! Michaela Coel is an actual acting goddess and I spotted George MacKay very briefly and he is so underrated.

Rocketman

Taron Egerton as Elton John was just bound to happen one day, their paths kept crossing. I think it’s interesting that they said this is going to be more like a fantasy musical?

Aquaman (Extended Look)

I usually have a tough time getting excited for DC and I am still hesitant now, but this looks fun. Still, it worries me that they feel the need to release such an extended video.

The Upside

NO! Why did they remake the Intouchables??

Vice

Wow, Christian Bale’s transformations never disappoint.

Robin Hood

I know some of you are worried about this movie after the whole King Arthur thing, but I have watched the movie and it’s not that bad. I may not be 100% impartial on the matter, but as soon as you get used to the modern look, this was overall a quite refreshing version of the tale.

Mary Queen of Scots

I am just glad they don’t use Margot-who-definitely-looks-like-the-Queen-of-Hearts in the thumbnail anymore.

The Mule

I am not the biggest Eastwood fan, but the man is 88 years old and still making movies. That’s impressive!

Welcome Home

This got creepier than I thought it would.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

I just keep being so in love with the animation of this!

TV Shows

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

It is like a complete 180 from the show I used to watch in my teens, but I am SO here for it! The show looks absolutely fantastic. I am still worried about a potential crossover, despite the Sabrina-Jughead-dynamic being my absolute favourite in the comics … but ugh … not with the other show. (Anyway, witches forever!)

Daredevil (Season 3)

I am not going to be able to contain myself! I am just going to ignore the fact that I haven’t watched S2 of Luke Cage and Iron Fist, because I need this much more. (Also, YAY for my beloved Karen Page to be back. Now I also need some news on Punisher S2 pretty please)

The Runaways (Season 2)

Honestly just so excited to see where they will go in this new season and if they will follow the comics or not, because if the answer is yes … I am worried for some of my faves.

American Gods (Season 2)

Season 1 was a wild ride, but that Mad Sweeney episode will forever be my favourite. Season 2 is looking mighty good as well.

Good Omens

I am so behind on reading Neil Gaiman books, but I can find plenty of reasons to still be super excited about this!

The Boys

Not sure what to think just yet.

There She Goes

Don’t we all just love David Tennant? So here’s some more of him.

Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat

I am always up for food shows.

Hopefully next week I’ll have some more trailers from the NYC Comic Con! What are you watching? How have you all been? Let me know in the comments below!

September 2018 Wrap-Up

My first month in Berlin is over and we will see if this is going to be a super short or very rambly post about all the things that have happened since I got here. First off, let’s start with the books I’ve read. Even if it’s only two, that is a 200% improvement from last month, so I am quite happy with that accomplishment. I still might lower my Goodreads goal, just because I’d like for it to actually be achievable, but here’s what I read in September for now:

Parsnips, Buttered: How to win at modern life, one email at a time  The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds, #1)

As always, click on the title to get to the review on the blog and on the cover to get re-directed to Goodreads!

Where do I even start to tell you what all happened this month? My new job started in a sort of frenzy as we were preparing for the world premiere of Michael Bully Herbig’s new movie “Ballon” (watch the trailer here – it’s in German though). His name might not mean much to you, but the German speaking folks will know that he is one of the most successful directors and actors in the country. His movies are ranked among the top 10 highest grossing movies of all time in Germany, just that he usually does comedies and this is his first thriller based on real events none the less. You can see how that is all mighty exciting!

Seeing all of this unfold, getting to meet the actors and being part of publicity stunts and ultimately watching the movie in a theater with all kinds of celebrities (Tokio Hotel of all people was there!?) was so much fun! And I was really impressed by it, because you could basically cut the tension in the room – the suspense was real! It’s not that I haven’t done these kind of things before, but just like Germany has about ten times as many people as Austria, it also has events and premieres on a much bigger scale.

My boss was also kind enough to take me with her to the First Steps Awards, which felt like a really exclusive and great event. It celebrated new talents in the film industry, and not just actors and actresses, but everything from camera, writers and directors to producers. Shopping for it was a tiny bit of a nightmare, because I at least wanted to look semi-fancy and my size seems to be not-available in most stores, but in the end I saw so many people I have admired for a long time. I don’t feel like I could have experienced anything like it back in Vienna.

Overall, my mind is quite occupied with work. I am one of those people who eats, breaths and dreams about work (the latter leading to some really weird stuff as some of my close friends will know). Deep inside, I know that I need a healthier work-life-balance. That my life shouldn’t be all about the job, but meeting new people and making new friends. I like Berlin and I feel like the streets I am walking on are slowly becoming a part of me, but I haven’t really found my people yet. It takes time and maybe I am not taking the necessary measures (aside from that one time I totally got friend-rejected) to really be pro-active and be in the world. But I am not going to lie, I really enjoy just sleeping the days away on the weekend.

FAVOURITE THING OF THE MONTH

My favourite thing this month was to just watch a whole lot of German movies. In my mind, I always thought that I was meant to work in more of an English-language kind of industry, but being where I am right now, I can honestly say that I like German movies. I know a lot of the names and faces. There is a real difference to Austrian ones in tone and vibe and, as mentioned before, scale. I don’t know how interested you’d be in reading a post about that one day, but I could talk about all the good and bad ones I’ve watched lately? I just have no clue how many of them would be available with subtitles or such …

ELSEWHERE ON THE BLOGOSPHERE

I am ashamed to say that I haven’t read any posts, except for the ones I was tagged in. I haven’t been on the laptop much and the first couple of weeks, I didn’t even have internet in my own room, but I am really trying to get back into it and engage more again. So, to help me with that, leave the link to one (or more) of your favourite posts by yourself and bloggers you like in the comments! I will try my best to check them all out! I also promise to check my spam comments more often, just to make sure none of you accidentally end up there.

That’s all from me for now! I hope you enjoyed this very rambly summary of my month. What have you been up to? Let’s chat in the comments below!

Trailers You Might Have Missed … (Sept 3-9)

I didn’t really get around to posting anything this week, because it was my first week at work. Everything was all new and came with a lot of information and faces and names to remember, but at the same time it was a lot of fun. I love to work and especially in this line of business. So much so that I went to a work related event on Saturday. All of that makes me think I really made the right call with coming to Berlin. Anyway, it’s Sunday and that means trailers and not wrap ups!

Movies

Instant Family

I so want to foster or adopt kids one day!! I am excited for this movie.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

It looks different in each trailer, but I really want to watch it.

Descendants 3: Under the Sea

How did I never realise that Kitty (TOATBILB) was in the previous Descendants movies!?!?

At Eternity’s Gate

My favourite depiction of Van Gogh will forever be the one episode of Doctor Who.

At First Light

I don’t know why exactly this is giving me Chronicle vibes, but I am intrigued.

Rosie

This is going to be brutal.

Wildlife

Again, critics are raving about it. This should get some attention during the award cycle.

The Favourite

It looks … crazy?

Kursk

I saw Colin and I clicked, but submarine movies aren’t really my thing.

The Beach Bum

But … what is it about?

22 July

I don’t think that this is a movie that I’d usually go for because of the topic, but I like that Netflix is telling stories from all kinds of countries.

Chef Flynn

I like cooking shows, so this is my documentary of the week.

TV Shows

BoJack Horseman (Season 5)

It never ceases to amaze me how great of a show this is, because I never expected it.

Elite

I have no idea what’s happening, but this looks really cool?

Van Helsing (Season 3)

I tweeted about this show and did not exactly praise it, but the creators still liked my tweets and that will forever confuse me.

Camping

I don’t exactly see this being a commercial success, but I can see people really enjoying it.

Narcos: Mexico

What are you watching? How are you doing? Let’s chat!
