It’s Thursday and I’m back with a new Thursday Movie Picks feature post. This series is hosted by Wandering through the Shelves and offers you a weekly prompt to post some movie recommendations/talking points according to the theme. Usually, you are supposed to post about 3-5 examples, which I find a very manageable amount.
This week’s special theme is Natural Disasters! I can’t with good conscience say that I love watching those, simply because they stress me out a lot. They’re literally natural phenomena and could happen (or have happened in some cases), which is sad and devastating and … does not exempt them from making good movies, I suppose. Here are my examples! (which definitely won’t *all* be realistic ones)
Twister (1996)
My dad had this movie in a box set with disaster films, I suppose, and I don’t know why, but I fell in love with it. I was completely fascinated by these storms, would never ever become a stormchaser myself, but wanted to know all about them. I’ve now seen it several times and really still enjoy it.
Armageddon (1998)
When I was little, I was obsessed with this movie for no good reason at all. I think it might have been the soundtrack by Aerosmith (I know it was the soundtrack), but I have some good memories about this one.
The Core (2003)
There’s just SO many big actors in this and I thought it was an interesting concept. Mainly thought of it, because I’ve seen it on TV several times now, I suppose, but always am happy to see Stanley Tucci on my screen.
An Inconvenient Truth (2006)
This documentary was one of the first to really rattle me. I was starting that age where I realized there was a world beyond my little bubble and I was just devastated to learn that we had screwed up our planet so much. There a lot of new and different information we have at this point, but I’m still glad that watching this was one of those eye-opening-moments for me.
Only the Brave (2017)
We all know I have a thing for firefighter content, so here we are. Need I really say more?
What did you think of my picks for the week? (Just as a side note, they were all classified as natural disaster movies on imdb.) What are disaster movies you enjoy? Let’s talk about it!

Last week was all about period dramas and this week we are moving on to cyberpunk! That’s quite the different aesthetic, but I’m going to try and not name the most obvious movies from the past years … although I will probably fail. We shall see!
Tron: Legacy
I’ve seen this movie in theaters a minimum of five times. I don’t know what it was (the Daft Punk soundtrack. It was the soundtrack for sure), but I just couldn’t get enough of it. I liked the actors and story and wasn’t too put off by the weird face capturing technology that just felt off. I’d watch this again over and over to be honest.
Treasure Planet
Why not add an animated movie, right? I don’t mention animation projects a lot, neither in this feature nor on the blog in general, but Treasure Planet was my everything when I was little. I had a huge robot figure and just wanted to go be a space pirate.
Divergent
They mucked up that adaptation series SO BAD. I think it had a lot of potential and it surely wasn’t perfect, because neither was the source material, but it could have been really great. Now it didn’t even get an end …
There’s so many other examples, like Blade Runner, Terminator, the Matrix series, Alita, etc. but I just felt like mentioning the movies above more. What are your favorite cyberpunk movies? Let’s chat!

As it so happens once per month though, we focus our attention on television content instead, making this the TV Edition about themes and scores! Some of you might remember how I could barely contain myself last month, when we talked about intro sequences (click here to check it out), but today I find it harder. Music and sound is an integral part of any production, but I would be lying if I said I played extra attention to it. However, as per usual, I’m going to do my very best to give you examples of scores I enjoyed!
Doctor Who
Murray Gold is a genius and has brought that extra bit of magic to Doctor Who. There were several episodes where I remember that his score elevated scenes and brought characters to life. I am personally partial to anything to do with our impossible girl, Clara, which is why I used her theme as an example, but anything would have been a great pick! I mean, the episode with Vincent van Gogh is still one of my favorites and “With Love Vincent” remains a classic example of Gold’s beautiful work.
Bridgerton
Bridgerton did something I enjoy a lot in general and that is remix modern day music into classical pieces performed by string quartets and whatnot they had back in the day. It offers a great connection to our time while not entirely disregarding the time period it is supposed to play in. I personally enjoyed the ball scenes all the more because of it.
Game of Thrones
There are people who would go to a concert just made up of Game of Thrones music, so, I could not not include it. We all know that the intro is iconic, but they also had an amazing score and themes throughout the show as a whole. Ramin Djawadi really understood the assignment here.
The Handmaid’s Tale
The Handmaid’s Tale is a very impacting story either way, but the music manages to elevate the atmosphere on several occasions. Here I wouldn’t claim to know the name of many titles, but I know that some of those notes vibrated through my body during certain scenes and that in itself was memorable.
The Queen’s Gambit
The Queen’s Gambit surprised me in so many ways I cannot even describe. I didn’t think I could find a show revolving around chess as exciting as I did, but I was fully invested. The score was masterfully done and I don’t know how else to describe it except for outstanding!
What are some of your favorite scores? If this was a post on soundtracks, I may have decided differently, but with just the score … I had to think hard!

The theme for this week is amateur sleuths, and I’m not going to lie to you, I was completely blanking on what that even means. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s basically … amateur detectives, who don’t do this professionally? Either way, that’s what I’m going with.
Scooby-Doo (2002)
I know that these movies were kind of corny, but I really loved them and had a lot of fun watching. I think at this point, with the amount of memes that go around, it has reached some kind of cult status though, because those outfits – they were something!
TKKG (2019)
*please use auto-translated subtitles for the trailer, they’re not perfect but the only way for non-Germans I’m afraid*
If you grew up in an English speaking country, the teen detectives you probably knew most were Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys and their likes. But in German speaking countries, we had Fünf Freunde and TKKG instead. I couldn’t find an English trailer, but there was one movie in 2006 that I adored and a remake of the entire franchise just in 2019. To be honest, it was not a hit in cinemas, but I watched it and enjoyed it quite a bit, because for the first time you found out how the gang met each other.
Enola Holmes
As much as I liked Sherlock Holmes, I was really surprised by how much I adored whip-smart and fun Enola. I hope they’ll continue to adapt the books for Netflix, because I can see it being a great franchise.
Veronica Mars
This movie was nothing but fan service, which is alright, because it was also financed by fans through crowdsourcing. I had a good time with it anyway, although I’m not sure you can call it sleuthing when I’m pretty sure Veronica has a PI license … Anyway, I think this movie showed how invested Marshmallows still were and paved the way for another season … although I refuse to acknowledge the last couple minutes of that last season.
What are some amateur sleuth movies you enjoy? What did you think of my picks? Let’s talk!

As it so happens once per month though, today offers us another look at television shows by making it a TV Edition focusing on Opening Title Sequences! Now, what makes a compelling opening title sequence? For me, it often is more about the song than the visuals, but sometimes those are just so brilliant too that I don’t even want to skip them. I’m going to have such a hard time picking just a few!
Dark
Dark is one of my all time favorite shows and the title sequence was done so well. It basically oozes that ominous aura it thrives upon and if you look closely, the intros give different hints for every season.
The Politician
It’s a recent addition, but ever since I heard and saw it, I fell in love with the intro for the Politician. Not only is it a smart way to show the main character’s inner workings, but it’s also Sufjan Stevens – you cannot go wrong with Sufjan Stevens!
Black Sails
The amount of incredible detail that went into this intro is incredible. It’s definitely on the longer side, but I rarely skipped it when I watched the show, I just enjoyed it that much.
Veronica Mars
Could not resist adding this one here. When “We Used to Be Friends” starts playing, I’m immediately back to my 12-year-old self wanting to be a badass private detective. This show shaped me and the song belongs to that experience.
Rectify
Rectify is such an underrated show in general and the intro was always just beautiful. It is so calming, reflecting that slow storytelling perfectly.
Honorable Mentions
There’s a lot of shows from my childhood and early teens that will just always be dear to me, even if possibly wasn’t the most original intros ever. And there’s just also shows from my adult days that didn’t all fit in above. As I said at the beginning of the post, the song choice is really essential for a good intro and these shows had a great song:
Friday Night Lights
One Piece
Gilmore Girls
Dawson’s Creek
The O.C.
Everwood
Game of Thrones
True Blood
Smallville
Misfits
Sherlock (BBC)
Westworld
Doom Patrol
Vikings
Downton Abbey
Daredevil
Outlander
Doug
Pepper Ann
My FAVORITE Outro!
Just because I always like to mess with the themes of the week a little bit, here is my favorite outro song ever – Bojack Horseman! I’m terrible because I usually don’t watch credits, but with that show I always wanted to listen to the song some more.
What is an opening title sequence or intro you will never forget? Let’s talk about that!

The entirety of February is dedicated to a special Romance Edition, focusing on many, many typical romance tropes and themes. Since this is the third week in a row with the theme, I think you get the gist. Today is all about Forbidden Love, which isn’t my favourite trope in love stories although I understand the appeal, but let’s see what I can come up with.
What Maisie Knew
Starting out with a controversial pick, maybe? What Maisie Knew has a lot of complex adult relationships, but I also like to think of the love shown towards Maisie. She receives the most attention and warmth from those who aren’t actually her parents. Is that forbidden? No, but it should be forbidden for parents to be so negligent and self-centered.
Anyway, there’s also some intricate falling-in-love-stuff though, so … that part can be the forbidden love part if we aren’t counting the surrogate parents feelings towards the child.
Beyond the Lights
Noni, a famous but troubled and very unhappy singer almost ends her life, but gets rescued by police officer Kaz. In order to hide this truth from the media, Kaz has to lie, which he does not like. Eventually he falls for Noni though, but their worlds are so vastly different. Can. they. make. it. work??
Womb
This movie is SO messed up. Basically, this lady is so in love with her partner, that she carries out a pregnancy of his clone, essentially raising the love of her life. I will not go any further, you can see how that pans out yourself in the movie, but … it’s messy.

I am back with another theme this week and it will lead you into some “competitive environment“. I do have some more themes in store, but I think I will eventually go back to single #CurrentlyWatching posts per week, just because this is a lot of work and my schedule change and some other factors have made it more difficult to keep up with blogging. So, if there is no post on a Tuesday, you’ll know what has happened.
It should come to no one’s surprise that Greenhouse Academy is a Netflix show. However, it is based on a show from Israel that was so successful on a national level, they wanted to do an English remake (I hear that’s a foreign network’s dream!). I can’t say anything about the original show, as this post will focus only on the Netflix version, which was filmed in Israel and produced by the showrunner of the original though. There are currently two seasons available and chances are looking alright for another season, but I gave up on predicting Netflix’ decisions about their shows (still bitter about the hold up concerning One Day at a Time …).
The relationship of the Woods’ siblings is tested after their mother’s death and their enrollment at one of the country’s most elite private schools.
I am going to be upfront with you here, I did not exactly expect to love this show. As surprising as it was, I found it really engaging and quickly became very invested in the fate of various characters. I think the idea of having a school separated in Eagles and Ravens, basically the equivalent of sport-interested and smart kids, very much reminded me of Hogwarts Houses and the appeal of figuring out which one you could possibly belong in (Raven all the way here!).
As much as I liked the show, I am also not delusional. The acting is mediocre at best, the sets look nice but also have something very fake about them at times and the actual school made no sense whatsoever if you took a closer look. They claim to have brought up some of the most influential and intelligent people in the country, but they barely teach the kids anything and then expect them to ace tests. I am serious, when do these kids even have class? Also, the very prestigious and successful basketball team they have is just for the boys while the girls are cheerleaders? Like what is even happening? The way girls are treated in general seems very behind. In my head, I made up this entire secret life of all the school students that aren’t shown where they have female sports teams and actual classes, because that was the only way this would have made sense to me.
Having said all that, I think it’s a decent teen show, especially for a younger audience. It doesn’t require too much thinking and isn’t graphic or violent (like many other shows of more quality on Netflix), yet it offers elements of mystery (but please don’t expect anything unpredictable or realistic!) as well as love triangles and drama that will keep you glued to the screen eventually. Especially the season two cliffhanger had me on edge (WHO IS AT THE DOOR?) and I would definitely be up for another season. Yes, it is very cliché and cheesy, and there are loads of aspects that could do well with some improvement, but if you don’t take it serious, I am sure you can laugh about it and just be entertained by the ridiculous parts. Also, bonus for good music – that’s always something I can appreciate.
With all its faults and shortcomings, I really enjoyed the friendship, rivalry and family aspects of the show (parents are actually present *gasp*, but I am not saying they are all being good just because they are present). There is some slow-building romance here and there, girls supporting girls no matter what and long-time rivals who can’t stand each other but still have some real respect and concern for the other’s well being.
It’s not all sunshine and rainbows though, especially when it comes to Hayley and Alex – the main characters. At first I was really hoping for a supportive sibling-relationship, but was quickly disappointed by how easily Alex turned on his sister when it came to the rivalry between the two dorms. Hayley, who was very much distrusting of the entire Greenhouse Academy scheme, was by far among my favourite characters and only tried to be there for Alex, especially when he was bullied. I guess, when it really counts, they stick together, but I still wish their relationship had been laced with less betrayal (in the end, on both sides if you ask me).
My other faves of the show are nerd Max and rebel Jackie and their blossoming friendship. They couldn’t be more of polar opposites, but that is what makes them work so well. Max may be awkward and rambly, but he is kind and nice to people just because he can be and Jackie is not used to that. It takes her a moment to warm up to him, but then she realises that he is truly that sweet of a guy and becomes his wing-woman and shadow wherever they go. I swear, they couldn’t be any cuter and make a stellar duo! There was this one time he sets up a private screening of a movie for her, so she can do an assignment for class even though she felt ashamed for not having seen the movie in the first place. He never makes fun of her in those cases, but simply quietly helps her.
I think that is more than enough on the show for now. Have you watched it? Would you consider tuning in to it? Let’s chat!
