What I’ve Been (Binge-)Watching #18

As promised, I have watched even more stuff and made a post about it. Should I ever ask any of you where all my time has gone, you can just swiftly point me to these posts, cause wow … that adds up to a lot of hours.

Veronica Mars (Season 4)

I have always been a Marshmallow and that will probably never change, but I do have somewhat conflicted feelings about this season. First off, it started out super strong. The stakes were high, felt familiar in terms of what Veronica does, but didn’t feel like the same old same old either. We got to see a lot of faces we knew, but unlike the movie, it didn’t feel like plain fan service, but rather more intentional instead (no shade on the movie though, I love that we got this beauty of a reunion). However, and I am trying not to spoil anything, that ending blew me away in a not so great way.

I understand where all of this came from in terms of a storytelling POV, but from an emotional POV – I am not happy! What if they don’t get to continue with the show and this is all we get? I’d be forever sad and from what I heard, not all of the cast members are happy either. Wow, I watched some uncomfortable interviews where no one looked like they wanted to talk about that bit.

For fans of: Veronica Mars, noir crime stories with badass female detectives, sarcasm and wit

Otherhood

This was such a lovely movie! I don’t think it’s going to be anything that sticks with me forever or anything like that, but it did make me laugh, cry and want to call my mum. That’s a pretty good effect if you ask me.

For real though, the story is simple but it works and it’s super sweet. They all have to go through different stuff, it’s about growing up, letting go, being there for each other, but also letting your kids make mistakes. There really isn’t that much more to say, just that it was one of those really nice movies that is perfect for a rainy day at home.

For fans of: lighthearted Netflix movies, reminder to hug your mum and tell her you appreciate her

Derry Girls (Season 2)

FINALLY! I was waiting for what feels like forever for Netflix to add the second season and I was not disappointed once I got to watch it. I love how everyone started shipping James and Erin, because I was secretly doing that a little bit in season 1 already. However, even better was the fact that the girls really showed James how vital he is to their group. That was such a lovely sentiment, especially since I pitied him most of season 1 for being treated the way he was treated (not that that has changed much).

For fans of: Irish shenanigans, stuff not set in the here and now, comedy

GLOW (Season 3)

I can’t remember much from the previous seasons to be real with you, because it’s just been far too long. The little reminders at the beginning help, but I have forgotten a whole lot nonetheless, so it always takes me a bit to get back in. The season as a whole definitely had a lot less wresting (which could be good or bad depending on whether that’s the part you liked or not), but what struck me the most is how stuck a lot of the characters felt to me. They all tried to develop and change but the Las Vegas setting didn’t do them any favours. I needed for Ruth to break up with her boyfriend and for everyone else to be more vocal about their feelings (except for Sam. My man did well this season!). I would, however, like to commend them on trying to tackle the LGBT+ topic more this season and although I feel like there are shows who did it better, I really enjoyed their takes on it and feel like we aren’t done here just yet.

For fans of: ladies who wrestle but now actually talk more about what happens in their lives

Fast & Furious: Hobbs and Shaw

I am going to keep it short, because this is not the kind of movie you talk about in detail and analyse. All I truly want to say was that this movie was so much fun. It’s not perfect and it doesn’t need to be, but it’s brainless entertainment and sometimes we all crave that kind of fun. I don’t get the whole “Fast and Furious presents”-thing, because yes, the characters are from that world and we do have a couple car chases, but cars are not the main thing anymore … but if we are being honest, they haven’t been the main thing for a while.

Well, I really was one of the first people who said “those wouldn’t be the guys I’d have picked if I had done a F&F spin-off”, but Statham and the Rock work really well together. I also want to give a shoutout to Vanessa Kirby, who rocked her role and will hopefully be in more roles should this get sequels (which it probably will). There’s a couple surprise guests, which I won’t spoil, but I do very much want to recommend you stay until the VERY end of the credits!

For fans of: banter, action, not really cars but still a little

There is one more show I am dying to talk to you about, but I think I have a different kind of post in mind for it. Anyway, did you enjoy this one? Anything you watched or want to watch? Let’s chat!

R.I.P. It or Ship It! TV Edition (Pt. 1)

tvedit

Last week I did a bookish version of the R.I.P. It or Ship It tag (click here to check it out!) and despite a lot of very, very terrible outcomes on that one, I just couldn’t stop thinking about how much fun this would be with TV characters. As you may have noticed in the title, this is Part 1. There are 2 reasons for that. First, I could think of so many characters and this tag is already very long and I didn’t want to make it even longer. And second, this is like the “adult” version of the tag, because I thought it would just be wrong if teens got paired with savage pirates (Black Sails sort of took over …). Well, I hope you have fun and if you want to do this as well – CONSIDER YOURSELF TAGGED!

iZombie Season 2 Premiere

I never thought that I’d b into a zombie story as much as I am into iZombie. They ended with quite a bang last season and now Liv has to deal with the aftermath. Spoilers for the Season 2 Premiere ahead!

As a little reminder, here is what happened last time we saw iZombie: Liv used up the entire cure Ravi found on Blaine and Major. Since she therefore is still a zombie, she couldn’t donate blood for her injured brother – her family didn’t take that well. Also, Peyton left (Ravi broken hearted).

Now that we continue with Season 2, I’ll break it down into all the characters as always:

  • Liv’s brother really didn’t take it well that she didn’t help him. Her mother neither, but the thing is, why couldn’t she just lie to them? Tell them she had some sort of blood disease? No one said she had to go with the zombie-thing. Either way, I get why they are pissed at her and she’ll need to do a lot of fixing on that front.
  • They are not the only ones who are not talking to her though – Major is avoiding her as well. Clive thinks he has something to do with what happened at the meat shop, which he obviously did, but Liv is protecting him.
  • Blaine is far from having gone legit after being turned human, but at least he is now providing brains from already dead people for his zombie clients. I will never forgive him for what he did to Lowell, but I do like him as a character so very much. I think it’s going to be fun to see him being human again and kind of having to team up with Liv. They just really remind me of Buffy and Spike sometimes – anyone else get that vibe?
  • Ravi is a little frustrated with Liv, because he can’t replicate the cure again. They don’t know how long it will last and if it is a permanent cure at all. However, apparently the ex-zombies can now feel other zombies when they are around – they have an actual physical response to their presence.
  • The villain of the season is someone we actually know: the people at Max Rager, who were responsible for the zombie outbreak in the first place. They are truly evil – they forced Major to become a zombie killer. Yeah, I know that he actually wanted to do that last season, but he had reasons to dislike those particular zombies. I feel so sorry for him, especially because they want him to kill Liv. I wonder how long he can put it off.
And then the shocker that they’ve already infiltrated Liv’s life in form of her new roommate is so creepy! They must have bugged the entire place and her phone and who knows what else …

Now, I hope Peyton comes back soon and I hope she’s on team zombie/Liv! Also, I wouldn’t mind if it were somehow possible that Lowell came back, but I guess there are some things even a zombie can’t recover from … What were your thoughts on the iZombie Season 2 Premiere?

iZombie Series Premiere

So, I am not a huge fan of the whole zombie trend and I don’t usually go out of my way to watch zombie movies or read zombie books, but I simply couldn’t resist checking out iZombie when I heard that Rob Thomas was involved! Prepare for Spoilers ahead for the iZombie Series Premiere!

iZombie is based on a comic book series by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred which now got adapted by the CW with the help of Rob Thomas, the genius creator of Veronica Mars. I honestly couldn’t be more psyched since I never really got over the cancellation of Veronica Mars and while it may not look that way, the shows are very similar.

Olivia (Rose McIver) or, as she’s often called, Liv is an overachiever, very focused and determined to get what she wants in her life. Everything goes according to plan until she goes to a boat party with an inexplicable zombie outbreak. She survives, but in the process she got scratched by a zombie and is now one herself. After that she turns her life upside down: She doesn’t pursue a career as a heart surgeon any longer and changes to a position at the morgue instead. Also, she breaks up with her loving fiance (Robert Buckley) because she doesn’t want to burden him with her zombie fate. So, just like Veronica, she’s a strong female character with a bit of an identity crisis, but the similarities don’t stop there. You are what you eat was never more true than for Liv, because whenever she eats a brain (which she has to do in order to not turn full on zombie) she gets the memories and sometimes even skills and characteristics of that person. Working in a morgue, her “patients” haven’t all died of natural causes and eventually she finds her purpose in afterlife by helping out the local detective (Malcolm Goodwin) as his psychic sidekick. So, basically she’s a zombie Veronica Mars kind of detective and I love it!

The show is hilarious and weird, which is just the way I like my television program to be. But here are some other things I really love about iZombie:

  • Rose McIver looks great as a zombie. She’s not the brain-dead version, but a sarcastic and bad-ass kind instead. Also props to the make-up department, they did an amazing job!
  • Rahul Kohli as Liv’s confidant is just hilarious! His comments crack me up every time, I love his accent and I am so happy that she has someone to talk to who’s so cool and nonchalant about the whole thing. Also, he tries to cure her, so she really couldn’t have hoped for someone better to find out about her secret.
  • At the end of the pilot episode, we find out that Liv isn’t the only zombie, but that there is another (male) one out there, played by David Anders. I love David Anders! Just knowing that he was in it, made me want to check it out and I can’t wait to see what his part in the show he will be. I have a feeling he is not as controlled as Liv.
  • Apparently Bradley James is set to appear in the show as well! Again, cannot wait!
  • Last but not least, it takes place in Seattle and I just really, really like that city!

I kind of feel like I want to check out the comics to see what to expect from the show as it goes along, but I’m not sure I have any time (or money for the matter) to do so any time soon. Have any of you read the comics and want to share your thoughts? I’d love to hear from everyone if they are as psyched as I am to have another Rob Thomas show on TV again.

100th Post and Hope for Marshmallows

I am so happy to have reached another milestone in my blogging “career”. This is my 100th post (which for a long time, I seriously doubted that I would ever reach) and what better way to celebrate than to talk about one of my all time favourite shows: Veronica Mars!

When I was younger I adored the TV show, although no one seemed to hype it like I did. But Veronica Mars was and still is a great role model and I couldn’t have been happier about the Kickstarter feature length movie they made, because it definitely deserved to continue. Now, it’s going to take a while until they’ll make another movie – that is, if they make another movie. But don’t despair Marshmallows!

On the one hand there are the companion books for the show that creator Rob Thomas co-wrote with Jennifer Graham. The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line has been out for a while and in October you can expect the new release of Mr. Kiss and Tell. I personally haven’t read the books yet, but they take place after the movie and I will put up a review as soon as I can get my hands on some copies of them.

If you are more of a visual type and don’t just want to read about the adventures of Veronica there is another treat for us. CW Seed has agreed to produce an original digital series featuring almost all of our beloved Mars-cast-members. The show will be called Play It Again, Dick and will revolve around Ryan Hansen, who tries to create a spin-off series for his on-screen character Dick Casablancas. In the series the CW only agrees to make the show with Ryan if he can get his old cast members to reprise their roles as well. The list of actors and actresses who appear is extremely long and they will almost all play their Veronica Mars characters as well as a slightly skewed version of their real selves. Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, Enrico Colantoni, Percy Daggs III, Daran Norris, Francis Capra, Kyle Gallner, Christopher B. Duncan, Ken Marino, Chris Lowell, Amanda Noret and Lisa Thornhill will return for Hansen’s funky and weird new detective show, but there are also some new faces. Ryan Devlin (who played the rapist in the third season) will now star as the new face of Duncan Kane – talking about weird … Also Robert Buckley and Rose McIver will have a small role.

I personally can’t wait for Play It Again, Dick, because it sounds absolutely hilarious! What do you think? Do you miss the old show?
