The Playlist Shuffle Tag

So, I do love to share some of my favourite music and I’ve seen the Playlist Shuffle Tag swirl around for a bit now. I was so happy that Michelle @The Writing Hufflepuff has tagged me now! I am a little afraid of the weird mix that is going to come out of this, but I bet it will be fun.

The Rules

Put your music on shuffle and list the first 15 songs to play (no cheating) then tag 10 others to do it as well.

*I will make 2 playlists, because I haven’t updated my iPod in ages and mostly listen to songs on YouTube now. They have the “My Mix” option on there, so I am going to use that as “shuffle”*

Naomi & Ely’s No Kiss List (Movie Review)

A month or so ago I wrote about the trailer release of Naomi & Ely’s No Kiss List and I can’t believe it’s already time to talk about the movie itself. There are not really any Spoilers in the review itself, but as always, I can’t promise the same for the comments!

naomiNaomi and Ely are best friends and they are both into guys. The “No Kiss List” (a list of guys neither of them is allowed to hook up with) has been their insurance against a Naomi and Ely break-up for all their lives. Yet everything changes when Ely kisses Naomi’s boyfriend.

So let’s start with the basics:

Genre: Comedy/Drama/Romance
Length: 89  minutes
Cast: Victoria Justice, Pierson Fodé, Matthew Daddario, Monique Coleman, Ryan Ward, Danny Flaherty, …
Director: Kristin Hanggi

I think I’ve mentioned it before, but I am just going to say it again: I have read the book of the same title written by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn, but it’s been a while. I mostly remember a ton of emojis that replaced words and that confused me sometimes, but other than that I am not sure I could give the most accurate account of what happens in the book. However, I will try and mention things that were different if I noticed them.

So, now to the real review. I LOVED IT! I even liked it a whole lot more than the book. While the different POVs weren’t as balanced and more focused on Naomi, it just all felt right. I very much liked the casting (and not just because Matthew Daddario is absolutely swoon-worthy). While Naomi was never my favourite character, Victoria Justice really showed her development and there couldn’t have been a better Ely than Pierson Fodé. Bruce 2 was adorable and Ryan Ward looked exactly like the Bruce 2 in my head. I forgot everything about the Robins, and even though I would have liked to see them more, they were a great addition as well. The rest of the people from the apartment complex were just hilarious as well.

As any story written by Levithan and Cohn, it was a sort of love letter to New York City, showing off its quirks and awesomeness. The music was great and for real hardcore fans like me, take a closer look at the T-shirt of the drummer from Gabe’s band – he wears a “Where is Fluffy?”-shirt from Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. I wasn’t sure they’d connect the stories like they did in the books, but I almost shrieked when I saw it.

I think I hugged my pillow during the entire movie and really felt with the characters when their relationship seemed doomed. I don’t know why exactly, but it just touched me a whole lot more than it did in the book. It portrayed the complexity of friendships and that change is inevitable. Yet, it managed not to be heavy at all. If I could change one thing, I would want it to be longer. It would mean more time for the Naomi-Gabe-story to develop and maybe more glimpses at the adorable awkwardness of the Robins.

Fazit: I loved it! And while it may be short, it’s definitely sweet and worth a watch.

Naomi & Ely’s No Kiss List Trailer Release

I love Rachel Cohn‘s and David Levithan‘s books, especially the ones they co-write. All the books are sort of interconnected with each other and just major fun! Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares is among my all time favourite Christmas-themed books and I just love the book as well as the movie adaptation of Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist starring Michael Cera and Kat Dennings. I’m still listening to that soundtrack from time to time!

Now, they’ve made Naomi & Ely’s No Kiss List into a movie with Victoria Justice as Naomi, Pierson Fodé as Ely and the ever so dreamy Matthew Daddario (soon to be seen as Alec in Shadowhunters) as Gabriel. I think the Trailer below is pretty self-explanatory, but here’s a little summary nonetheless:

Naomi and Ely are best friends and they are both into guys. In order to avoid possible conflict they have a No Kiss List and guys on that list are taboo for both of them. When Naomi and Ely each develop feelings for someone they shouldn’t, their friendship is majorly on the brink of getting destroyed.

It’s, to be honest, been a while since I read the book, but I remember maaaany emojis and finding them confusing at times. I’m guessing I won’t have the problem this time around. Cast looks great to me and I cannot wait for the release of the film. It’s already been shown at the Outfest in Los Angeles, but it will take some time until it gets into cinemas. Until then, they have this thing called the No Kiss Club where you can join, earn points and win stuff. It’s not really necessary for the full movie experience, but I am so looking forward to this that I thought, “Why not?”. I’m not going to win because there are already people with thousands and thousands of points, but it never hurts to support a movie you genuinely care about. So, if you want to join as well, it’d be great if you just follow the link below and the rest will be explained on site.

Eye Candy Season Finale

Seriously, people who are following me on Twitter know how obsessed I was with this show, live tweeting every week (and luckily getting retweeted by cast and crew) and generally getting way too emotional about it. Now the first Season is over and I want to recap/review the Season Finale of Eye CandySpoilers ahead!

I always get mad at shows with only ten episodes, because they last for such a short time, but on the other hand they are often more precise in their story arc than longer shows. Eye Candy (or rather MTV) really surprised me with barely having any bad episodes and mostly being on point and topic-related. Just as a little summary/reminder: Lindy, a hacker, starts working with the NYC Cyber Crimes Unit after it turns out one of her online dates is a serial killer. (That’s really the short, short version – click here to read my take on the Series Premiere!)

Now let’s talk about the finale:

  • The obvious elephant in the room first: Who would have thought that Jake is the flirtual killer? Just when I was about to semi-accept Jindy as a thing … Well, better him than Tommy. After getting a glimpse of Jake as a kid (adorable but disturbing), we find out more about his motivation behind killing and his obsession with Lindy. I think the voice-over of the killer (which I actually loved) just really threw me off his tracks. So, very well done, especially kudos to Ryan Cooper for the creepy acting in the last episode!
  • I just need a second to express my appreciation for Harvey Guillen as George. That guy is hilarious!
  • Connor probably wasn’t my favourite character this season, but I do feel sorry for him. His friends just keep dying – first his date, then Tessa and then Sophia has a close call. Let’s hope for a bit of a less eventful time for both of them to recover.
  • Now, last but not least, Lindy. She finally found a clue about her sister that might actually lead somewhere. I get why she left immediately, but I hate that Tindy is apart for now (just like Bellarke on the 100 – not cool!!). That last cyber farewell with Tommy was heartbreaking, because I truly love all their scenes together and I would have liked for them to have an actual conversation face-to-face. I am glad she forgave him, but I think he would have helped her in her search for Sara. He clearly stated that he would never stop looking for her and he even “stole” equipment from the Cyber Crimes Unit in order to help her, so her leaving is a bit pointless.

With the Sara-cliffhanger (Who was she afraid of? Who did she want to protect Lindy from?) I definitely want or rather I NEED another Season. I am desperately hoping ratings were good enough. I definitely loved it either way!

UPDATE 4/18/2015:

The show has been cancelled and I am devastated!!!

Eye Candy Series Premiere

MTV is really stepping up their TV show game by introducing darker and more intense series each season. Teen Wolf was already a bold step from their usual reality shows and they really hit the right tone with Finding Carter as well, but Eye Candy is something entirely different. Beware of Spoilers for the series premiere right ahead!

Eye Candy is based on the novels by R.L. Stine and follows Lindy, a young hacker, who, after her sister Sara got abducted, uses her skills to find missing people. She’s been in trouble with the police before, but needs their help after one of her online dates turns out to be a stalker and serial killer. The pilot episode is already a fast paced mix of action, drama, suspense and romance, which seems promising for the rest of the season. Of course there are some flaws, like the desperate need to look young and cutting edge, but the show was a lot better and more exciting that I expected. Here are some of my thoughts:

  • So, the casting is certainly debatable. Victoria Justice as the lead just really wouldn’t have been my top choice. Of course, she’s grown up since Nickelodeon‘s Victorious, but still, she’s just not the one I expect in a rather serious psychological thriller. In addition to that, the acting is sometimes mediocre, but somehow I can overlook that in MTV shows. Also, as I mentioned above, the cast is very young, good-looking and of course their characters are skilled in whatever they have to do. Real life isn’t like that, but who cares, it’s entertainment after all.
  • After Game of Thrones, people just aren’t that shocked when characters get killed off anymore, but I was surprised that Lindy’s love interest was murdered right in the first episode. I quite liked her dynamic with Ben and would have loved to find out more about their history. Maybe they’ll show it in flashbacks nonetheless.
  • I find it interesting that the serial killer gets his own voice over. Usually the psychopaths don’t get to tell their point of view.
  • The abduction scene with Sara was just odd. Why didn’t anyone of the other vehicle owners, who got Lindy stuck, help her sister? That whole storyline is a bit of a mystery to me. Why her? Why in broad daylight and at a drive-through? I guess we’ll find out at some point.

So, for now I definitely think I’ll continue watching the show, just because I am curious to see how it continues. From what I’ve seen in the promo, Lindy will start working with the cyber crime unit and have other cases next to the one about her stalker. Did you check it out as well? What was your first impression?
